- It's not uncommon to find your older Ctenanthe or Stromanthe prayer plants sending out one or several long stems from their base. This may seem alarming at first, but don't worry: it's a common way that those plants propagate themselves in the wild and I'm going to show you how to do that in your home as well with my Ctenanthe lubbersiana.

Ah, perfect timing for this video. I have a huge lubbersiana, very bushy that has pushed out a few of these long stems. I’ve been torn with letting it grow crazy and wild or if I trim those off. I was going to propagate those shoots in water, but good to know I can go direct to soil. Thanks for this, and all your videos!
Water or Sphagnum will work too! It's pretty easy to root. Don't freak out if the leaves curl inwards while its rooting. It's the Prayer Plant way to curl their leaves to stop any water loss. They will begin to unfurl as roots develop. Keeping it in a more humid environment will help immensely (I have mind in a plastic bag to help).
@@summerrayneoakes Ok, good to know about the curling. I'll try not to freak out, since the mother plant is perfectly happy in 35%-40% humidity with the heater running. I have at least two off shoots I will propagate, so I will do one in soil and one in water so I can gain experience which way works best for me for future off shoots.

I just acquired a Ctenanthe Lubbersiana, and I freaking love her, and was wondering how to propagate it down the road, and as soon as she gives me more growth and I can propagate I will for sure try it, this is such a beautiful plant and such an easy grower, it has given me a half dozen new leaves since I got her a couple of weeks ago. Oh my goodness! Thank you soo much for this video! I've had such a hard time finding info on this particular plant! I currently have a huge one - it's 'sweating' a sticky sap like thick fluid- I've had the plant for a long time, and it's always done this...no insect damage or anything, and the plant seems healthy as heck...I can't find any info on this at all- is it normal for this plant? I'm assuming it is at this point, but would like some re assurance lol

Thank you Summer for telling us how to say it! (silent 'c') I was always saying it wrong. Very easy to follow video directions. Ctenanthe's are one of my favorite easy growing plants. They really take off in the summer. (no pun) :) BTW Love your print outfit with jeans! Two thumbs up!!
Very useful info Summer...I just picked up a largish Ctenanthe lubbersiana (variegata?) in a local super, and it has a couple of those long runners. At the moment it's acclimatizing so I'll let it be just now, and then follow your advice on propagation. Might also put it on a high shelf as an experiment ~ to see if any of the other runners change growth pattern/habit if they're left to trail over shelf edge (I like to put my plants through their paces!).

I tried this but the leaves of my cuttings curled into tight little tubes almost immediately. Is there a way to keep that from happening?
Update: after 3-4 days of the curled up tube leaves and keeping the soil moist, I took them out, left on the stem "tails," and put them in water. One mostly uncurled later that day. A few days later (yesterday), I took them out of the water and clipped off the stem "tails," and put them back in the water -- and now they are both fully uncurled and looking lovely. So I am now waiting to see if roots form, but I definitely won't be trying the "straight into soil" method again. I wanted to update for folks having the same issue. I'll update again as to whether/when I get roots. Your mileage may vary, but I am in NYC.
Have they since rooted in the water?
@@itslou2384 Yes they did! I have rooted 6-8 stems this way now and they transplanted nicely into soil.

I did this exactly how you did and my leaves are curling! Help what do I do to save them?? Should I take them out and prop in water?
I think she is using to much soil for a plant that doesn't have roots yet. a much smaller pot would work better, although curling leaves is kind of normal once they are suffering some stress, also, depending where you live is not time to propagate plants in soil yet, because the weather is cold. Also when I propagate in soil willing to the plant to grow roots, I create a an small green house for them, like a transparent plastic box, and keep them humid and warm inside,
I start mine in water and when the roots are a few inches I plant in soil.

I will be interested to see how fast the cuttings root. Have you ever done one by layering? Cumbersome having 2 pots 'attached' but rooting might be surer.

If only I had watched this a few months back then I wouldve had so many more ctenanthe lubbersiana. But now they died back and have gotten smaller. So disappointed with that. But this video was awesome and now I know that those super long stems can be propagated. Thanks so much for that !!!😃

Hi, mine is doing the same thing now after 2 days. Leaves are all curled up, did yours recover? It’s right next to a humidifier and I have a grow light on. Not sure if it’s helping or hurting.
Mine too. I can’t find any video that seems to help about curling after repotting. I’m not sure if is the light. I’m pretty sure it’s root was distracted.

I got this particular plants without knowing it would be so hard to keep alive if I soak into water and leave in sunlight in southern area. They all gone except on stem with a leave. I will try to make it alive at my best....😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Don't immediately cut free the tips you want to propagate off the mother plant! Just make a U shaped wire and pin the plant tips down against the soil in the second plant then wait to cut the stem until the new plant is rooted. It's a lot less stressful to the child plant and more likely to succeed than cutting it away immediately. Not all plants can be propagated that way but this was the perfect situation where the mother plant had long droopy stems that would be easy to bend down to a new pot.
It works fine doing it that way and its much easier to manage the pots. You can even just cut them up and put them in water. Its not really an issue re mother/child plant......I think maybe you are confusing another plant with this one? Anyway, don't be afraid to follow the instructions in the video, she know what she is talking about. 😊

As someone who's propagated before, even propagating a new thing is nerve wracking. Sure I know cuttings aren't bad... But I def feel like I always kill my first props of a specific species
That shirt! So glad you explained the reason for stalk formation on these. My calathea warscewiczii constantly forms stalks and I take cuttings to prop in water. Now, I know it's just as easy to prop in soil. Thanks for the tips.
Either will work. Sphagnum will work too. Just remember to keep the humidity up as well.

A glass jar of Bio-tone. Do you just leave that out on a shelf like decor? Does sunlight affect it?
Good question. I actually keep it in the hallway in the dark in another container. Partially because it smells pretty ripe when you open up a bag, so keeping the remainder in a closed container is advisable!
Any update of this plant please. I have this plant but I’m afraid to do repotting or transfer to a new pot. It might curl. Can you do this on water rooting? To jut let the root come out?
I would too. I tried this method but all my cuttings have curled up and look like they are either under watered or over watered. Is this normal? Or should the leaves have all stayed nice and open?
This is exactly what happened to mine and I don’t want them to die. I am about to pull them out of the soil and prop in water. Lemme know what you did too. It’s been impossible to find much info on this, good luck!
@@kristasusi3800 hi I just did this already what I have done is to put it straight to the water or perlite with heaps of water till the roots come it then repot it and keep it well moist
@@kristasusi3800 yes just put them in the water let the roots come out if the roots are out you can transfer it it the soil keep it moist as the roots are used to the moist if not it will curl up due to luck of moisture, keep it out of detect sun. Then it will be establish then

What type of soil mixture do calathea like
I need to cut back my prayer plant (don’t know exactly the species name) last November and it’s rooting in water since then (already started to pushing out new leaves). but I’m always happy to see soil propagation because this is the option I would prefer but in the past some plants just started to mold :(

Yes; definitely need that air flow too and just make sure everything is sterilized. I did the mistake of using the same Sphagnum one too many times in propagation and that probably had mold spores on it and rotted up a new Alocasia I had.

Haha, yes, once you open that pack, you need to contain it. It's ripe! I always put mine in a closed jar afterwards since you don't need very much of it. A little goes a long way!

Thank you so much for this video Summer. I absolutely loved watching the leaf unfurl, I love all of your videos and am learning so much!! I have a Red Maranta since last Summer and I've finally learned how to care for it. I found that misting the plant, which I know sometimes it's a no-no in the plant world if at all, is what's kept it alive. I also noticed that it's getting alittle leggy but it's also growing a new stem at the base. Should I leave it as is and wait til it gets more stems at the base, I want to make it more bushy and definitely wouldn't mind an extra plant lol. I'm sorry for the long message but I really want this one to last.😁🙏🙏

Why is my ctenanthe soooo crispy? The new leaves are yellow and crispy and the older growth is yellowing but seems ok otherwise....
I tried this method, but the leaves of the cutting started curling almost immediately. And they don't seem to be uncurling and it's been two days. I hope you can give me some advice, I really don't want the cuttings to die.

Does anyone know the difference between Ctenathe Lubbersiana and Ctenathe Pilsoa? I thought I had a pilsoa but just learned of lubbersiana from this video 🤔
If I'm not mistaken, I *think* C. pilosa is now C. marantifolia and that one has longer, more pointed leaves (almost like the Stromanthe you see in the market) but markings more similar to the C. burle-marxii I showed here.

I've also heard the common name "Golden Mosaic" for mine? So I'm thinking that what I have is a C. lubbersiana then... Is there a good resource to stay up to date with species/genus changes?
Yes, it's called Golden Mosaic and Never Never plant, I've heard it called. As far as staying up to date: it's challenging. Scientific journals are the best. Next in line perhaps lining it up with Kew Botanic Gardens or Tropicos, but even those don't have the latest

oh, interesting, i have never seen such a thing with my ctenanthes. usually, when i repot them, they split into several parts all by themselves and i put them into several pots.
Hello, I took a cutting from Ctenanthe and put it in water but now leaves are turning inward and some leaves are turning yellow...Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance for your advice.

@@janineachury I tried her method but my cuttings ALMOST died. I decided to propagate my own way. Carefully cut off from where 3 stems meet (where leaves grow from a stem) and put it in water. After about a week or 10 days they root and plant it in organic rich soil. My plants are super happy now! She is wrong in her way of propagating Ctenanthe.
Would you use some Biotone when repotting all houseplants?
Sure, I don't see why not. It's very, very low in 'fertilizer' too, so it's not going to scorch plants when their roots are coming out. I met a lot of growers who will sprinkle a slow-release fertilizer into their plant pots when rooting; and this would act similarly, except it has some helpful fungus and bacteria as well.
Perfect.i too had heard other “growers” talk about using Biotone but I was hesitant about using with houseplants. I have bit the bullet and ordered some. Will try it in my next repotting marathon next month. Thank you.
My Ctenanthe lubbersiana was labled a "Never Never" plant that I found at Lowes last summer. I spray and water it with distilled water now to try to keep it from getting the brown edges & spots. How often should I feed it and what should I use? Thanks.

Just wanted to let you know that this way of propagation is wrong. I tried your method but it didn't work. My cuttings almost died and thank God I saved my beautiful plant.
So, to those who want to propagate Ctenanthe be careful of what you do. Here is how you propagate this gorgeous plant.
Carefully cut off a cutting from where 3 stems (joint) meet and put it in water. They root after about a week or 10 days and plant it in organic rich soil. Voila!
My plants are super happy now! Good luck!
I never root my plants in water. Always directly in soil and never had any problems.. maybe this method doesnt work for YoU but it doesnt mean it won't work for others.. 🙏🏼
