    After the initial oil application (when the wheel is new) do you follow up with additional applications, or just use honing oil? Thanks for the vid.

    • @GillianKnives
      @GillianKnives  5 років тому +4

      You have to constantly keep the Leather Wheel Oiled, to prevent it from drying out and cracking. Keeping the leather wheel sealed in a zip-lock plastic bag while not in use will help maintain the wheel. Just add a small amount oil before each, or monthly (which ever is sooner) and you should be fine.

      @@zackspivey2557 you can make it yourself, i think is not very complicated. Use a compass, make 8" circles, make a hole in the center with size of the axle of your grinder. you can glue them each other or maybe use some other fixation method. i would use glue and sew it across the pads.

    Turn the base of your grinder around so that the wheels turn in the opposite direction. Now you can work on the tops of the wheels instead of below. Safer and much less awkward.

    Thx great description! Also appreciated hearing your preference for the leather wheels vs paper/MDF ones. Had been curious if there was any difference. In any case this helped me decide and haven't looked back on any of my 'traditional' sharpening stones since... much appreciated!

    • @GillianKnives

      Thanks for watching. I feel that traditional water-stones give a superior edge to the leather sharpening wheels. It is the problem of lack of time, that I turn to the buffer.

    I use vegetable oil to prep the leather and the same to clean the leather. I use a 6" grinder and epoxy the leather to grinding wheels. Seams are okay,. Don't try to fit a continuous circular strip onto the wheel like a UA-camr did. Two strips and two seams work just fine and is much easier.
    Thanks for the video.

    • @GillianKnives
      @GillianKnives  3 роки тому +1

      Toby, thanks for your feedback. I hadn’t thought of vegetable oil. As for the seams, some makers use a clean file or even a diamond wheel dresser to knock them down, before using the wheels. I didn’t make my own wheel though. I appreciate you taking the time to share your knowledge, & Thanks for watching!

    I'm gonna have to get one of these, I've been using an old leather belt and it works well, but it isnt proper and isn't getting it where I want it to be. It gets the edge to clean shave levels but I want hair popping sharp

    • @GillianKnives
      @GillianKnives  4 роки тому

      A leather strop with green rogue should be adequate to remove the wire burr. I often use a piece of horse leather that i glued onto a piece of wood (old banisters actually) for the final strops.

      @@GillianKnives I'm debating ordering a leather wheel for my bench grinder, or possibly a leather belt for my belt sander. Though I'm sure anything will be better than using a leather belt I got for $3 at a thrift shop, it works and gets my blades sharp enough to shave down to bare skin but I know for a fact that I can go sharper. I especially want to get better sharpening tools to use on my straight razor, I can get it sharp enough to slice through a magazine but it just doesn't shave well enough to trust for my face.

    • @GillianKnives

      I have both the 2x72” leather belt for a grinder and the wheel. The leather wheel works better.

  • @nizarfakhoury
    @nizarfakhoury 5 років тому +1

    Nice video. Did all this sharpness come just from the leather stopping wheels? is that enough for a dull blade, or was your blade relatively sharp already?

    • @GillianKnives
      @GillianKnives  5 років тому +1

      The stropping of the knife using the leather wheel is the final process. The blade was initially sharpened using a wicked edge sharpening system. Which you can find my review of the WE system here.

    If you open the housing of your grinder and flip it around, the wheels will spin in the opposite direction, allowing you to work from the top without risk of anything flying at you.

      I've actually opened the KBAC Variable Frequency Drive before and switched two of the wires to make the motor run in reverse to sharpen knives with in the past. I'm looking for a switch that will work with the VFD so I won't have to take a screw driver and open it every time I need to sharpen a knife. If anyone has a part number please send it my way.

    • @GillianKnives
      @GillianKnives  2 роки тому +1

      Grazie per la visione e la risposta. L'olio protegge la mola in pelle, dalle screpolature e la rende morbida per l'affilatura. La pasta abrasiva taglia e affila l’acciaio. Hope Its correct answer as I don’t actually know the italian language. Chow. :)

      I do not use silic *on carbide* powders on the leather strop wheel, only with the cardboard wheels.
      Here is the video where I do use the Silicon Carbide Powders on a wheel.

      Three important rules for shop grinder safety:
      1) Use the grinder wheel guards.
      2) If you must take the guards off (most knife sharpening set ups are this way), orient the grinder BACKWARDS so that the rotation of the wheels are spinning AWAY from you. This set up is so much safer and gives you much more working room.
      3) Use a router speed control. 3500 rpm is the rate of spin for most grinders. Too fast IMO. I use a router speed control to get the rpm down to about 1500 rpm. STAND TO THE SIDE AND AWAY FROM THE MACHINE UNTIL FULL SPEED IS REACHED AT START UP.
      Good luck.
