  • For this trip I made my way over to Edale, where I met up with Dave Goodman (@DaveGoodman1959) and Simon Frampton. After a brew and a buttie in the local café, we made our way up onto Kinder Scout and setup camp at Crookstone Knoll for the night.
    Day 2 saw us make our way towards Hope then up Lose Hill and along the Great Ridge, passing Mam Tor and the Lord's Seat, then onto Brown Knoll where we setup camp for our second night.
    Day 3 saw us crossing Brown Knoll, passing the Trig point and continuing in the direction of Swine's Back. From here, we picked up the path that leads to the top of Jacobs Ladder and back into Edale. Once we arrived at Edale, we enjoyed a nice bit of grub washed down with a pint of ale in the Nag's Head pub.
    This was a great end to the camping year of 2024, and I'm looking forward to what 2025 has in store for me. Happy New Year everybody.👍🙂

      Cheers Stuart. Yes mate, those cloud inversions were great to see. I'm glad that I filmed them or otherwise I would have thought that I'd imagined them.

      Cheers mate. I don't think that I've seen cloud inversions being so intense. I'm glad that I got it on film, or I'd be doubting myself now that they were so cool.

    What a wonderful group camp to see an amazing, campful, adventureful, Kinderful year out mate. 🏕️ And them views on the first night, being above the cloud inversion.. impressive that day wasn't it.. we were very lucky to get up high and witness it that day. We only discovered the beehive shelter near the airshaft the week before, so it was lovely to see you all sitting in there! Some hike that second day!! These trips don't half inspire us to get out for days at a time, which we've done a few times now and it is magical, so thanks for that buddy. Brilliant. 👍

      Thanks Mats & Donna. Those cloud conversions were magical and I felt privileged to see them. Although lugging a weight on your back up a hill takes a bit of effort, the reward that you get when you see sights like that makes it totally worthwhile. You're right about the second day and the milage we covered. It was just over 10 miles, which doesn't sound a lot for a full day's walk, but with the elevation covered combined with chasing the daylight, it forces you to press on. I'm more of a rambler than a hiker, and subsequently, I'd prefer to do a walk like that in the lighter months where I can loiter and take my time.🙂
      Cheers for watching and I hope you both have a fantastic time out on t'hills in 2025.👍

      We felt privileged to see an inversion on that scale too.. will be lucky to ever see a sight like that again! And 10 miles is actually a heck of a lot with the ups and downs with a winter kit on your back! We're just ambling ramblers rather than marching hikers too Steve.. gotta take it all in haven't ya, and not do yourself a mischief. 🥴 All the very best buddy. 😉👍

    What a blessed camp! Pretty much perfect weather on the first day, then a brutal day heading over to Brown Knoll - again, you probably had perfect weather, can you imagine doing that in bright sun, or pouring rain? I really dont know how you manage a day like that on an empty stomach Steve, your dedication to McEwans over food is legend! Thanks for sharing, and have a happy, peaceful healthy and wealthy new year!
    PS... I heard that the beehive cairn on Jacob's Ladder was damaged by some idiots climbing on it. Its such a shame, people dont realise that cairns, especially this one are very old features of our landscape - its probably older than the hillfort at Mam Tor.

    • @Hengists_Wild_Camps

      Cheers Phil. If I sit around the house doing nowt then I get hungry. However, after doing anything which involves exercise, for some reason, my appetite seems to disappear. It's weird mate, I can start the day off feeling hungry, but after lugging a bag up a few hills the hunger goes away. That coupled with the fact that I'm lazy and bone-idle gives me an excuse not to cook owt lol.
      Thanks for watching and Happy New Year Phil.👍🙂

    Why hengist?

    • @Hengists_Wild_Camps
      @Hengists_Wild_Camps  Місяць тому +1

      Great question John. Hengist (or Hengest depending on the spelling), is a character from early English history. History has been a life long passion of mine and when I setup the channel, I didn't really want to use my real name for the channel but do something a little different. So I picked an obscure weird name lol. If you go to the 'Community' section of this channel, you'll find a short video in there explaining in more detail who Hengist was.
      Thanks for watching and Happy New Year.👍🙂

    • @johnd8538
      @johnd8538 Місяць тому +1

      Yeah, I did a bit of research about Hengist last night and found out a bit about him and his brother Horsa!

    • @Hengists_Wild_Camps
      @Hengists_Wild_Camps  Місяць тому +1

      @johnd8538 In old English John, Hengist translates as Stallion (this is still used in Dutch, I believe) and Horsa as Mare. The English language still uses a version of Horsa in the modern word Horse.👍
