Game Review rules: - 7 or lower is a bad review - 8 and above is a great review - If you're reviewing Xenoblade, only God can save you - Never under any circumstances reveal your thoughts about Pokemon, they will find your house
Its like the general vibe of the review is influenced by it's score, and then the viewer conflates a positive vibe with a good review, and a negative vibe with a bad one
It's hard to imagine that there was a time when reviews were supposed to help inform your purchasing decision, and not validate a purchase that you've already made. Edit: Some people are misinterpreting this as "old good, new bad". That was not the intended takeaway at all; I'm merely making an observation on the changing market for game reviews. To further clarify, I think that the demographic of people who search out opinion content related to the media they're currently invested in has grown massively in the past few decades, and has mostly eclipsed the "help me decide whether I should buy this thing or not" crowd. Opinion content fills a void left by the decline in real-life friendships; validation of one's experiences must now be attained from the collective zeitgeist rather than from neighbors and colleagues. Mainstream review sites like IGN and Gamespot represent this zeitgeist to many people; to others, Twitter or Reddit does, etc. I'm not throwing shade at anyone, as I'm guilty of engaging in this behavior myself. People's reactions to game reviews reveal something about humans that's critical to understand. By default, we perceive intelligence primarily based upon how effectively someone reinforces our worldviews.
Funny enough, this is almost exactly how politics works lol Unfortunately, when Gaming and Politics mix together, it usually results in the companies outright denying any sort of bias and or personal political views because the public WILL call them out on it. Granted not everyone thinks the same way, so of course there will always be people who try to defend IGN or any other Gaming Journalist site because they feel the larger majority is “Too Harsh” on these critics. When in reality it only serves to muddy the waters for short period of time and causes no real change anyways. It’s for that reason the I prefer to keep my personal opinions to myself. I’d rather enjoy something for what it is then base my entire existence on the opinion of someone else….
As a kid in the 90s, I was reading different game magazines. I remember one that could be pretty brutal with its scores, really taking advantage of the entire spectrum. The top grades were so rare that I could afford to buy a lot of the games that got them, and they never disappointed. Really regretted spending my pocket money on a game that looked good but didnt get a top score, and I had to admit they were right after all.
There was magazines like EGM that had 4 people review the same game. It told you a little bit about the reviewer and what they currently enjoyed the most. Like the review for Turok on the N64 one reviewer gave it an 8 and another gave it a 5.5 with the other two giving it a 7. I feel that is a good way for an entity like IGN to review stuff. I cannot name any IGN reviewer and any IGN reviews are simply passed off as IGN.
Multiple gamers reviewing always helps. Especially with different tastes. I've seen KF have one where someone hated it, someone loved it and someone else was in between then they explained rationale. @@Gatorade69

The way he leaps off of barrels and flips backwards to face the camera before falling head first dive is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a Kong protagonist.
The implication that this video makes is so on-point. Bad scores usually translate to backlash unless the game is deemed to be demonstrably bad by the community already (like Gollum), whereas great scores will be lauded and people will activate their weird ass "best IGN review in a decade" fetish. This happens every single time, and I hope it doesn't stop. Admittedly, that Xenoblade review was indeed originally super bad.
I believe it's more about the confirmation of bias. These comments expose the way they really think, how they're only looking for someone with a title to confirm their bias. I don't doubt that they were excited when they found a review with a good score and exclaimed out loud "That's what I'm saying!" when it's supposed to be entirely unbiased.
"Finally a reviewer who's unbiased, and by that I mean they agree with my opinion. I also felt like _ was a masterpiece and all I could find were biased haters who have always hated games developed by _. They've literally never said anything good about _'s games ever. How could they even review a _ game when they're not even a true fan of the series?! You deserve more views for your unbiased and fair reviews."

people's obsession with game reviews is so weird. like, gamers seem to consider it an actually moral issue if a game is a point lower or higher than they'd personally rate it. it's nuts.
It’s for that reason that the public won’t ever receive a truly unbiased game review unless they watch someone on YT who seems fairly genuine (similar to Dunkey) Often times gamers feel insecure about their games because of numerous companies having problems within their workplace (Activison, Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc.) which causes them become overly cautious and at times paranoid with their decisions. All I can say is if you like something, then that’s ok. Not every opinion has to be based on someone else’s.

I really loved this review of game reviews! I can tell that dunkey really is a very big fan of ign reviews and a man who truly understands the genre! I am glad they got him to review it, I doubt anyone else could have done as good a job as he.
I think a side note that adds to how people react to the more positive reviews is that it’s much easier for a writer to come off as passionate (especially in a relatively short form review) when discussing something they love. As a result, the nines and tens come of as more “human” than the middling and even negative ones
What would be the purpose of watching a review just to hear something praised? Isn't the ENTIRE purpose of a review to save you the time and money of buying a game and not enjoying it? People are imbeciles. If you want something to tell you the game is good, just go watch the trailer.
I wrote music reviews for a website a long time ago, and I hated writing about stuff that I found bland. At least really negative reviews about something I hated can be fun to write.
I like remembering Anton Ego's speech from the movie Ratatouille: "I don't _like_ food, I _love_ it. If I don't love it, I don't swallow." Meaning, critics can also be negative about something _because_ of their passion and knowledge on a subject, not _despite_ it.
This Reviewer review was top notch, definitely comes from a place of experience. I just wish you would have reviewed the exact games only I have played and said the exact things that I like to hear and nothing else. Overall, 50 zoinks out of 23 Thunderbolts
I don't get it, if people already like and love the game why even bother looking for review and complain about the reviewer's opinion in first place tho. Isn't the point of review to give more insights for people who have no idea or haven't played the game? Instead they went into a rabid mode just because they don't hear what they want to hear despite knowing opinion is subjective for each person in first place 😅
@@irvancrocs1753 It's just a bunch of people looking for buyers validation or they're feeling buyers remorse so they either look up the review to see if they made a great choice with the game they just bought or in the other case, they don't like the game, see the reviewer liked it and think the reviewer at IGN doesn't know what he's talking about.

@@malaria6171not everytime though. His opinion really sucks when it comes to plot heavy RPGs (regular ones, I can't stand JRPGs too, even though he gives them unfair criticism in certain situations). He has short attention span and needs instant gratification for his actions with rare exceptions otherwise the game is instadoodoo according to him. Also he values mechanical gameplay too much over everything else. If there is no gameplay that keeps you on your toes, he is lost. Yeah or a carrot or something
People's reactions to game reviews reveal something about humans that's critical to understand.
By default, we perceive intelligence primarily based upon how effectively someone reinforces our worldviews.
Funny enough, this is almost exactly how politics works lol
Unfortunately, when Gaming and Politics mix together, it usually results in the companies outright denying any sort of bias and or personal political views because the public WILL call them out on it.
@@johnnysalery7383 BTW what are you thoughts on the steam deck?
As a kid in the 90s, I was reading different game magazines. I remember one that could be pretty brutal with its scores, really taking advantage of the entire spectrum. The top grades were so rare that I could afford to buy a lot of the games that got them, and they never disappointed. Really regretted spending my pocket money on a game that looked good but didnt get a top score, and I had to admit they were right after all.
og psm was the best
There was magazines like EGM that had 4 people review the same game. It told you a little bit about the reviewer and what they currently enjoyed the most. Like the review for Turok on the N64 one reviewer gave it an 8 and another gave it a 5.5 with the other two giving it a 7. I feel that is a good way for an entity like IGN to review stuff. I cannot name any IGN reviewer and any IGN reviews are simply passed off as IGN.

It's super obnoxious.

people's obsession with game reviews is so weird. like, gamers seem to consider it an actually moral issue if a game is a point lower or higher than they'd personally rate it. it's nuts.
It’s for that reason that the public won’t ever receive a truly unbiased game review unless they watch someone on YT who seems fairly genuine (similar to Dunkey)
Often times gamers feel insecure about their games because of numerous companies having problems within their workplace (Activison, Blizzard, Ubisoft, etc.) which causes them become overly cautious and at times paranoid with their decisions.

Well, unless you're Roger Ebert.
We miss you, Rog.
And then there's Zero Punctuation. Now Yahtzee knows how to passionately tear a game a new one.

On a serious note, im so glad Dunkey makes these videos. People really do be goofy when they comment about IGN
