- We leave the Bahamas and head towards Ft. Lauderdale, where we run into a bit of a problem!
00:00:00 In this section of the video, the narrator discusses their recent trip to the Bahamas and their mixed feelings about the marinas there. They explain how the prices for marina stays have significantly increased, with some locals attributing it to individuals from Miami buying up the marinas and raising the prices. They express their frustration at the inflated rates and compare them to the more reasonable prices they encountered in other areas during their trip. However, they eventually find a more affordable marina called Blue Water and express concerns about it becoming popular and booked up in the future.
00:05:00 In this section, the speaker discusses how Miami developers are rumored to be buying up marinas in the area, potentially impacting their ability to visit certain locations. They mention the possibility of skipping Bimini and heading straight to other destinations. The speaker also mentions their plans to visit Fort Lauderdale and stay for a couple of days to do provisioning and get supplies for the boat. Additionally, they talk about the changes in the clearance process for leaving the Bahamas and entering the United States. They mention using the CBP ROAM app for clearing in, which they find convenient. The section ends with the speaker recounting a dramatic incident where their boat lost control and started heading towards a mega yacht while they were drifting in neutral. They tried to contact the marina for help but were unsuccessful.
00:10:00 In this section, the narrator describes their attempt to halt their out-of-control boat by dropping the anchor. They then try to get the attention of a nearby mega yacht by hailing them and using fenders. However, their efforts are unsuccessful, and they start to panic as they realize they have lost control of their vessel. Miraculously, just before crashing into the yacht, the anchor works and they are propelled backwards. A U.S tow boat comes to their rescue after overhearing their distress call.
00:15:00 In this section, the boat's transmission fails, causing a loss of control. The crew tries to figure out the issue and realizes that the transmission cable is jammed. They manage to unjam it and regain control of the boat. However, they encounter more problems later on, including the engines completely dying. Despite the challenges, they remain optimistic and continue to work together to find solutions.
00:20:00 In this section, the video shows a tense moment on a boat where the narrator is dealing with insurance issues and trying to figure out the problem with their boat. They call their insurance company to inquire about coverage and confirm their docking location. The narrator expresses frustration at the recurring problem they thought was already resolved but remains determined to fix it once and for all. The tow boat accompanies them as they dock, but it turns out to be unnecessary.
A+++ to lynn and that towboat captain. Lynn did wonderful despite all the stress. Not fun…….kudos to the towboat captain staying by your side until docked. Glad all are safe. Bet this episode earned more than one cocktail! 😂
It sure did!
Why is it going in reverse out of the blue?
Great job Lynn and Towboat US🎉🎉🎉
Great job Lynn!!! Only thing I can add is maybe blow your horn 5 times to get the mega yachts attention.
That would have been smart.
Universal maritime distress call.
I think dropping the anchor would have been first thing,
Credit card Captain
Been on boats all my life. If you even *think* you might hit another boat you blow your horn 5 times. Glad this didn’t end up being an accident.
5 blasts on the horn would have gotten everyones attention. Great job with everything else.
I know. With everything going on I completely forgot to blow the horn. I did announce the situation on channel 16 though.
The beautiful Lyn just showed how great of a first mate she is!!! Great job Lyn!!!!!🎉
Thanks!!!😁
OMG! I was having stress just watching you take care of the problem.
Ed & Lynn good job not panicking in a stressful situation. As a professional Mariner with 30 years at sea one item we always do coming into port is to clear the anchor and have it ready to release immediately. I’m can’t say having it out earlier would have helped, but when you had trusted to the stbd side of the channel I was screaming at my phone drop the anchor.
The drinks at the end were well deserved.
Thrusted
Fortunately, I dropped it just in time to stop us from hitting that yacht. At first I was worried that dropping it too soon might put me in jeopardy of hitting the first yacht i passed. We definitely had a few drinks that night!
Lynn was a superhero! Great job!!!
Holy moly, I’d a been crappin down my leg, nice job Lynn !!!!
A master class in urgency and taking control of a situation without panic!
Thank you!
Lynn did an Amazing job! Glad there was no property damages & everything worked out fine. Nail biting episode for sure.
She did! It all worked out in the end.
I think it is great how calm you stayed. Not easy to do. You might want to consider a overhaul on your engine rooms. Old boats start having strange problems and it gets frustrating. Overhauling (trans, engine, system, exhaust, controls, electric, etc) is expensive, but you will enjoy your time on the boat with piece of mind.
Thanks. We are upgrading as time goes on. The problems have actually been very minor when you consider how many miles we have put on this boat.
Wow - what a nail biter. You all handled that well. Lynn is a rockstar!
One bit of advice: five short blasts on the horn will get everyone’s attention and let them know there’s danger. Should have done that right away when you realized you lost control.
was looking for this comment.. that is why you have to have a horn
I know. I was so preoccupied with trying to regain control I completely forgot about using the horn.
Practice using 5 blasts of the horn during man overboard drills will help remember the horn in other emergencies.@@tryingnottosink9107
Great teamwork in a stressful situation. Well done 👍🏽
Thanks 👍
When I worked in commercial maritime as soon as we passed the channel buoy, we set an anchor watch. In the event we lost steerage or power someone would drop anchor. As soon as you lost power I was saying drop "drop anchor, drop anchor". Glad you guys were able to avoid hitting anything. That drink at the end was well deserved.
I was worried that dropping it then might cause me to hit the first yacht so I placed a bet on regaining control quickly. Fortunately, I dropped the anchor just in time.
Thank you for videoing your loss of control issue so that we may see your actions real time. Both of you remained amazingly calm which likely aided in rational thinking. We have an acquaintance with a Nordhavn 55 who was backing out of his slip using his handheld remote when the battery died in the remote. He was unable to get out of reverse and backed into the boat and dock behind him. Not pretty.
Wow, that must have been scary. Never thought about those things having batteries.
Wow, the best safety gear on the boat is Lynn. You both did a great job, but Lynn remains so cool and in control under pressure. Great job guys!
Thanks. We appreciate that.
Job well done! Kept a level head the whole time! Fantastic situational awareness!
Thanks!
I know things happen fast, but 1 Long and 5 Short blast on your horn would have gotten the attention of others. Sometimes we forget the simple stuff. Happy it all worked out. The anchor was a GREAT action, Nice communication between both of you!
I know. I was so preoccupied with trying to regain control I completely forgot about using the horn.
very few know what that means lol
@ysesq LOL Well anyone on a anything that floats should and I can assure you the people on the mega Yachts do!
Great Job, Pirate Republic Bar ending is great!
One of our favorite restaurants in Ft. Lauderdale.
We have a 1981 Hatteras bought in 1993. In 2015 we overhauled the engines, transmissions, steering and electronics. Problems have gone away 100%. Put a new generator in 2021. These are solid boats specially the Detroit Diesel engines.
Drink well deserved after that! My heart was pounding for you guys as i watched! I think its crazy how the Boat US guy makes you call and deal with coverage while you're in the middle of an unstable situation, i don't understand why he didn't get you moored up against that long wall to starboard and then worry about all of that. I guess in the end it worked out but from our view at the bow it was just untimely in my opinion. Great work making a quick fix captain and even bigger kudos to Lynn as she held her cool and did everything she could in the situation as well! Gotta love boating sometimes! :)
I thought the same thing. I guess the tow boat thought he had has under control.
Lynn!!! You were a dang Rockstar! Fantastic job!
Thank you! ❤
I’d love to see you post a follow up about what went right and what you’d do differently. My heart was pounding during that event, you did a masterful job remaining g calm.
I’m also running electronic controls and this is my biggest fear on my boat. I’ve practiced this scenario in my head and my initial plan was like yours kick the anchor overboard. Now after watching this I’m adding to the plan several short blasts of the horn to get as much attention as possible focused on me. A pan pan or mayday on 16 to engage any on water help faster.
Any landing you can walk away from is a successful landing.
I know. I was so preoccupied with trying to regain control I completely forgot about using the horn. We did announce it on 16 though.
Crazy! Great job saving it from disaster! Love watching you guys!
Thanks for joining us!
We had a similar experience entering Northeast Harbor on Mount Desert Island. The seas getting there were rough and we had some sediment get stirred up in our fuel tank, blocking the fuel intake and stalling our engine. We were able to hook a mooring that passed close by, otherwise, we would have dropped anchor. The harbormaster was then able to tow us to the mooring we reserved and we were able to clear the fuel line and continue on. Good call on dropping the anchor and staying calm! One of those 1% sheer terror moments of cruising!
Fortunately, it is only 1% of time!
Damn.>.that gave ME anxiety. Capt and Crew did an amazing job!
Thanks!
If I ever had dreams of owning a boat thanks for yet another reminder of what can go wrong and nice job of staying calm.
Those guys on the mega yacht could have been nicer- It was an accident and nothing got damaged.. Love watching you guys, stay safe and keep living life to the fullest!
Thanks!
@@tryingnottosink9107Love to know who that mega yacht was.
Put in complaints about if crap staff
I thought the mega yacht guys were pretty reasonable. They spoke calmly and provided clear instructions.
@@bnkwupt 😆 🤣 😂 😹
Nerve racking. Lyn did a good job and you both certainly earned your cocktails that day.
I have a similar vintage Hatteras with only cables to the transmissions (no electronics). I haven't had one jam ever but please let us know what you find out and then I will double check mine.
Had a similar incident in Norfolk but a mega yacht next to us at the dock lost its bow line in a high wind and the bow decided to slide over and visit us. Lots of fenders, no damage and the captain got the bow thruster working after a few minutes and put her back on the dock.
Those seem to be the primary options in that situation- bow thruster, anchor and deploy lots of fenders.
Thanks. Yes we definitely had a few cocktails that night.
Wow Lynn, you handled that unbelievably! BRAVO
I'll bet those post-trauma cocktails never tasted so good. Hard to imagine a more helpless, stressful feeling than drifting uncontrollably into a mega-yacht. Lynn kept her cool! Glad it got sorted out without any more damage than to your nerves.
We definitely had a few cocktails that night!
Warning blasts on the horn, great way to get attention, bet the sundowners were extra strength
I know. I was so preoccupied with trying to regain control I completely forgot about using the horn. Stiff drinks were definitely in order!
You both handled that very well. I appreciate you keeping the video rolling during that experience, I think it helps all of us learn. I was thinking how I would have handled it and as always it's best to think about a problem before it's a problem for real on my own boat. Glad all turned out well. Of course it's always frustrating thinking you have a problem solved and then it surface later. But as we all know, that's boat life.
Thanks. I am glad Lyn had the video running as well. It does make us look very good, but it is educational.
That was crazy, Great job Lyn, you didn't panic and great timing for the rescue boat
Thanks!!!
That is one of my biggest fears when driving my boat.
You guys were amazing under so much stress.
Thanks!
Wow, that was a thriller. And good choice of background music for flavor.
Definitely exciting!
Lynn, what a great job. It seems like your luck has been horrible this year. I hope things go better for you and Ed
Looks worse than it was. We still had a great time this year!
Lynn, you were the MVP!! Goodness! I was so impressed how you kept it together and handled it. This is one of my nightmare scenarios. When you reached up and put your hand on that superyacht's fender, I gasped! Cannot believe it was that close. I wanna hear what happened after. Did you cry? I would have!! 😂 nice job!!
We drank heavily! We came within a foot of that yacht. Good thing Ed had me drop the anchor when he did!
Wow that dual Roger Out at 6:06 was just super! One of your best!
And what an episode, another mechanical - crazy! This one was potentially dangerous… not just inconvenient, yikes, that was nerve wracking to watch! Perfect ending scene with a cocktail after it was over - whew!
Roger that! 😁
Great save! The music in the background fit perfectly too!
Glad you think so!
Hats off to you all. I know I could never do this boating with the wife. She would fall apart immediately.
Thanks!
WOW!! Good Job working the problem!!
Thanks!
Great job on the save.
Thanks!
Oh shit, that's Gallant Lady a 65 million dollar Feadship. Being helpless sucks, but yall handled it like pros.
Thanks!
Fricken ROCK STAR Lyn! Absolutely had your wits about you!
Yes she is!
Someone might be making her coffees soon.
😂😂😂😂
Love that cup.
I loved the way you 2 came together and figured it out with out really panicking
Thanks!
Wow!, That's some scary shit. Kudos to you both for not panicking. I've heard if you get a ding on a super yacht, the size of a pimple, it'll cost you a fortune to repair. I bet you both could use a drink after that calamity. Good job.
We definitely had some drinks that night!
Omg! I was so nervous. You did an amazing job!
Thank you so much!!
Wow! Talk about scary. But you did pretty good considering the circumstances. I cannot say that I could have done any better myself as I am very new at this as well. I think the decision to go down below to look at your transmission control system was a good idea, since there was nothing you could really do topside that Lynn wasn't already doing. I too am learning that boat life is a never ending journey of learning. Today luck was on your side, nobody was hurt and no vessels were harmed in the making of this video.
Thanks. I agree. I have been getting a lot of people saying I should have been up there with her but it would have been pointless. She had things in hand.
PLEASE don't take this the wrong way just wondering why not just blow tthe Horn to get the attention of the mega? At the same time the "gentlemen " on the mega SURE COULD OF BEEN A LITTLE MORE POLITE!!!! Overall great job no one was hurt and you guys got it taken care of. Staying calm during a emergency makes things so much easier and a better outcome! LYNN AND ED YOU GUYS ARE A SOLID TEAM !!! 1000%
I'm glad you said this, so I didn't have to. Ed needs to learn to be proactive rather than reactive. 5 horn blows indicating a collision is eminent gets a lot of attention quick.
Lynn did an awesome job on deck. Saved the situation.
@@MarketingStrategies28engin was running. The battery for the electronic control was believed to be dead. The alarm circuit was sounding on the lower pilot station. They definitely had power to sound the horn.
I know. I was so preoccupied with trying to regain control I completely forgot about using the horn. There are definitely things I could have done differently, but in the moment, that is what we did and I show it unvarnished. In the end, it never mattered. The anchor stopped us before we hit the mega yacht. Sometimes you get lucky.
I realize month(s) ago. But damnit Lynn have a Xanax on me! 😂. Glad all turned out well! Looking forward to more adventures, at your expense of course,😂 Thanks so much for sharing guys. Roger out!
Thanks for joining us! It was exciting. A Xanax would have been nice! Roger out!
Man oh man. Get that cable fixed for good. We need you guys safe!!!
Wow, great job guys. Lots of Monday night quarter backs in the comments. At the end no one got hurt and no boat damages just bruised egos and another experience. It doesn’t matter whether new or older they all have problems, it’s a boat and a choice. Love the level headedness. ❤👍 Back ground music was spot on. 😂
Thanks. We appreciate that.
Many years ago I survived a hurricane on Euluthra at The Duck Inn with JJ. The Inn is probably the safest structure on the Island. The locals are very Awesome people. My favorite getaway.
WOAH….That was a close call….woo wee! Lynn stayed pretty darn calm. Great job.
Thanks!
The myth that boating is all about motoring along enjoying the water is exploded once again. Had sailboats for years, but although I often feel the pull of the water and boating, I don’t miss the additional set of responsibilities. My friends enjoyed the beer and pizza bribes on workdays though😎
Great Job Lynn and Ed. 😁🛫
Thanks. We appreciate that!
Perfect scenario why you should have your anchor ready to drop. Great Job to the crew, you didn't sink
Our lanyard releases very quickly, so we were fortunate.
What a bummer. All went well in the end. Hope you find what's wrong.
Great info. Thanks
You bet!
Lyn is a number one first mate and then some, cool under pressure!
I am so happy it all worked out and I have
no doubt you'll get that problem fixed for good but yikes...
Time for a good strong drink, eh?
Cheers,
Rik Spector
She certainly is! And yes, we definitely had a few drinks that night!
wow that was a high stress
You handled that so well!! I was panicking watching 😂😂. Glad you made it!!
Thanks!
Wow, that's a stressful situation nobody wants to find themselves in. Fortunately you didn't panic and stayed cool which is the proper way to handle situations like that hope you get that cable replaced or whatever you got to do in order to make sure that doesn't ever happen again..🍸🍸
Thanks. It was definitely stressful!
what a scary moment that must have been,. almost hitting the mega yacht. not having control of your boat. I am glad everything went well. Love your music and your video.
It was definitely exciting! Glad you like the videos!
I watched the incident a second time In case I missed something. However, it was not there. The reliance on purely electronic communication means was obviously not working. YET, I never heard the ship's horn sound to signal an emergency that would have been heard throughout the Marina....including the Superyacht in your path!!!!!
I know. I was so preoccupied with trying to regain control I completely forgot about using the horn. We did hail out on channel 16 though. That is why the tow boat showed up.
Wow! Now that was good timing have a TowBoat on site. I would have been sweating bullets!
Sometimes you get lucky!
Got a little excitement there! No harm no fowl.
It certainly was exciting!
You too are awesome, it’s like slow motion stress
Lynn is amazing
Thanks!
Great driving Captain 👍
Thanks!
Lynn is cool under pressure
Wow! Intense to say the least. Great job Lynn!! As far as the marinas being bought up, it’s not surprising, ever since Covid there has been a large amount of consolidation in the boating world. One just has to look at MarineMax’s balance sheet.
So true!
Your 1st mate was on point. Great job holding it together and getting the job done. Can't get much worse than that. I lost both engines pulling it years ago. Luckly I only hit the dock (softly).
Yes she was!
Capt Ed and Firstmate Lynn ( sp) it's a love hate relationship with computer controllers.... glad you all are safe and Thank you To the Tow Captain awesome job all the way around....
Scott and FuzzyNugget from the Northwoods of Wisconsin
Despite the problems, I still love the controllers. Cheers!
Good job on the anchor. I didn't even think of that before you did.
Thanks. It saved us!
nice save captain you and the boss lady
Thanks!
Wow. I am glad it all end well.
Us too!
Lynn you handled that potential disaster like a pro! Well done! As serious as that situation was, I was laughing at the tone in your voice and your comments... I know you had to be thinking my God if we hit that super yacht, it's going to be expensive! Glad things worked out in the end...!😊
Thanks. It was an interesting experience to say the least!
In the moment that will get your heart beating ! You have to do the best you can and try not to panic . You guys remained as calm as you can be in that situation 👏👏
Staying calm is the most important thing. We agree.
I was sweating in my seat with/for ya. Good job!
Thanks!
Before entering any marina while I have room to maneuver I bring the engine to neutral and then check reverse and also check both my bow and stern thrusters. Transmission linkages can come loose after hours of running while the boat is in forward. Sometimes it may seem to be inconvenient to come to a stop and do this but it’ll save you one day. Great job dropping the anchor.
That's the thing. I had just traveled a mile from the inlet to the marina, shifting in and out of gear all along the way. In fact, it actually happened when I was coming to a stop outside the marina so I could hail them. But my momentum and the river current pushed me in.
@@tryingnottosink9107 you guys handled well. Thx for sharing the experience, it helps to see these “emergencies “ so we can develop our own plan when it (not if) it happens to us. Jim MV Cetus.
Interesting as I used to watch a yacht show years ago I believe a 170 ft, and captain always had both anchors deployed just above the water line whether coming or going just for this exact reason? I think it’s a good thing! Great job guys!
Thanks!
I’ve been on that mega yacht. It’s the Galant Lady owned by Jim Moran Family (Southeast Toyota)
Great job staying calm! Could have been much much worse
Thanks!
Lynn, you rock ❤
❤❤❤
The whole world is screwed up since CoVid. The prices of so many things have more then doubled. It’s absolutely crazy snymore
Great job lynn
Thank you!
That’s exactly what everyone’s saying, so we should say screw Bimini and go to the keys!
Love the Keys! Next video.
Calm heads prevailed and those ZF commanders are horrible….
That's scary! Nice job remembering the past fix though! Fast thinking! Next purchase, megaphone! So here's an odd one for you? Who performs the opening music sequence? Nice relaxing music...
It is by Jessie Villa. We use a lot of her music.
I don't mind paying if they have all the amenities like showers, laundry, free pump out, but if it's just water and electric hook ups, you better charge less than all the other marinas Ed you said it right there man I totally agree
It is going to hurt Bimini, we think.
@tryingnottosink9107 I'm in Albany tonight on Hudson River 2.50 a foot, nice place Albany yacht club....on our way to Florida...
Deck Hand Lyn needs a promotion
Admiral?!
lots of respect to the captain in this stressful situation !!!! great job. that cable would have me paranoid tho, is there a fix for that? new cable?I purchased a 2006 silverton 34c 4 years ago and have been in a couple really stressful spots, I've learned that keeping your cool is way better than freaking out lol great video thanks for sharing. SUBSCRIBED👍👍👍👍
Not sure. We hope we solved it. The cables seemed fine so we lubricated them, the shifter and the servo gears. I guess we'll find out.
scary situation great job dealing with it. both of you@@tryingnottosink9107
waving like you've spotted a friend in church ! Should be waving with both arms at full stretch !
What a day to end the holiday. Good to see all is good
Same thing happened to me
Stuck outboard steering tube
After I cleaned it out a few months earlier
Completely disassembled and cleaned thoroughly
Seized at the boat ramp
I hate intermittent problems. You just never know for sure.
Nice job guys for diverting catastrophe. Don't ya just live how things quit working at the most convenient time.
I know. We had been traveling over a mile from the inlet at idle speed and it chose that moment, after 1000 miles, to fail!
Yeah, there comes a point where you need to change what you’re doing with your propulsion system. No more kludgy fixes.
I bet y'all had to change your Yogis after that! Glad it all turned out fine.
