Somehow, you managed to make your Double Bass sound like an electric!
Hey, he just said to make them sound identical
He made a new video fixing his mistake, he said he accidentally used the electric bass recording for both videos
@@Oopyirdy I thought so, I was gonna say “Dude get rid of that Bull Fiddle if it sounds like that”
This.
@@Oopyirdynot a mistake, more intentionally fucking with people to see their reaction
How to make an electric bass sound like an upright. First step, make your upright sound like an electric bass.
He died the same audio file for both
@@theolympiyn8670ohhh, the last two notes of the riff, there is a fretting sound 😱
my mentor has the Sunset Tower gig, literally the highest paying bebop gig in LA, tuxedos and all. He uses a similar pickup on his upright. ALL BEBOP players do. In fact you have to go back to studio recordings of bebop players in the 40s-60s to hear mic’d up bass. So if you’ve watched any great jazz bass legend in the last 40 years, you watched him play with an almost identical setup to Danny’s. They all use amps, they have for a while…
Nailed it imo. A good neck pickup can sound so warm
"Nailed" cause of the nail file? 😅
@@JonathanTheTrombonist how dare you 😂 🔦💃🔩⛏️🔧🛠️🔨
love the Miles Davis bassline.
I would rather say your upright sounded like an electric bass than the other way around
Oh boy, you were right b
Love the Miles Davis. Classy touch.
So What! What an awesome bass line!
Brother, you gotta check out so what by miles davis, it's gonna blow ur mind
@@UberGingahSo what?
I saw this yesterday, made the comment ;"So What" should be played on stand up only.."
thank you pissdaddy
God I love So What, played it my senior year last year for literally my only experience as of now with jazz & it’s just such a fun motif
its my dream to play So What in a bmad one day man big props to you🙌🏼
You're one of my biggest discoveries on the tube maybe ever - amazing stuff man
Bro he literally recorded electric bass over the double bass, you can hear the frets when it shows him playing double bass
Honestly, with the pickup you’re using there, the upright sounds like an electric bass. You are losing the quality from the body’s resonance.
that's the entire point. he couldn't make an ebass sound like a standup, so he "low key" did the other
@@psychwardsandSCENEnot the point, he made a mistake
@@kaspernylen1275 how is it a mistake? it was done *ON PURPOSE*, like i just said.
@@psychwardsandSCENEbetween this and him having to explain what a string tree is for, it's really players like these that give people the impression that all bassists are idiots
From what I've learned through research and experimentation on this topic:
- Pluck right up at the fretboard
- Foam mute at the bridge (carwash sponge works great), as much as you can without ruining your intonation
- Flatwound strings
- Technique. Don't go too wild with your right hand; remember, double basses are big. And, if you're going for a jazz sound, as your finger finishes plucking a string, let it thump gently against the next string up as it comes to a stop (unless you're on E, of course, where there is no next string).
- Some sort of humbucker in a way-high-up neck position seems to sound the best, if your bass has one.
- And, of course, if you can play them, fretless basses will always sound more like an upright
Pulling out the Miles Davis. Nice.
It sounded brilliant.
Sounds good! 😎
Man your videos really did justice on me practicing
As someone who is a novice bass player, wow. I hope I'm this good one day, i love how he's just happily playing over the studio track.
WTF you can hear the frets on the upright 😂
No you cant
frets...?
@@Putreixthe video is was a mistake because he used the electric bass recording twice
@@Putreixyes you can
I feel like this test would work a lot better if you used a mic instead of a pickup for the upright cause the resonance of an upright is integral to the tone
That's pretty dang close. Excellent job my man!!!
It's the same audio, or both of them were recorded on the bass guitar. You can hear the fret slides on the "double bass".
that is amazing!
Pretty damn close!! That nail file, though.😂
the same audio was used for both examples lol
Bridge pickup with precise EQ is the correct answer.
Whow! Impressive! I'm gonna get those strings!
I came close to an upright sound with my fretless Fender PJ, Acoustic 370 amp. 18" CV speaker and a 15" EV speaker, and Ernie Ball flatwound strings: 55, 75, 95, 110 gauge.
Sick dude🤘😵💫
"behs" will always get me.
Wow. Very impressive.
I actually picked up a fretless
5 string in the guitar shop the other day, and I fell in love haha. I’d be way too inconsistent with a fretless tho.
I solemnly believe that you can make any music work with any instrument, it's just a matter of how much work you put in, and in this case it doesn't have to be an incredible amount of work
I play both and this is pretty cool
Your double bass already doesn't sound like a double bass
It doesn’t help that you can hear the frets😂
I was actually blown away from how similar the electric bass sounded. Holy shit! Behs!!
The Black Nylon Tape Wound Strings did it, it sounds more like an amplified Double Bass, you can also use Omni Bass Strings. Historically the Bass Guitar was originally designed to replace the Double Bass because it's easier to Carry, easier to play in tune, plus the pickups and amp give it more punch. The extra punch from the Electric Bass is also because the Double Bass is Acoustically compromised (like the Viola) as it's scaled down from the optimal size that would be appropriate for those low notes.
Pretty rad that you chose to Miles Davis. "So what" rock on dude!!
So what, absolutely great tune
My brain reset when I heard the "So What" line
Thank you
Interesting Dude!
Is it just me, or is there a fretted sliding sound on the upright?
There is, dunno what's up with that
@@cormacbohren3175 he accidentally put the bass guitar audio over the footage of both the guitar and the upright. He fixed it in another video
Nailed it
Closest I've ever heard personally was a Godin A5 fretless with flatwounds(obvs)
Miles Davis mentioned 🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🎺🎹🎷
I can remember at a band rehearsal I got a pretty good double bass-ish sound by using my shitty 15W practice amp (all I had) as a DI into our PA. Sounded really cool
Thomastic infelds on a fretless hollow body and picking just at the end of the neck sound surprisingly double bassy
Makes me want to light a candle and put sunglasses on.
not bad at all !
The piece was a small part of the bass line by Paul Chambers on So What by Miles Davis & John Coltrane
My God! Its the Keymaster!
you just put the electric bass sound while playing the upright. They have the exact same sound.
loving some miles davis so what at the start as a jazz bassist
Jaco pastorius is def like that, he got a double bass when he was a kid and one day he wokeup the double bass got destroyed and he bought a jazz bass took the frets off
It happened several times due to weather changes. Seriously must have been a pain in the butt lol
The closest ive gotten to the standup bass sound is on a squier fender Jbass on the low B string. Get some real good quality, deep booming bass strings
Strangely enough my MA production research project was on how close you could make the bass sound like a double bass. After many sleepless nights & days in time the studio & library researching, I would summarise the result of my findings to ‘sort of but not really’. This sounded pretty close though. Depends also if you want to do it acoustically using similar components such as similar type of strings & hollow body or through using effects.
I got the sound with neck pickup, tone off, palm mute, and a felt pick
Short answer: No. I've been trying for decades. Now I just drag the doghouse around when that's what I need.
I used those things on a fretless jazz bass and had people ask if I recorded my bass tracks on a double bass all the time. Being a horror punk band, it just sort of fit the sound.
So what feat. John Coltrane by Miles Davis mentioned!!! RAHHHH
I’ve never encountered an acoustic BEHS pickup/preamp like that one.
Try moving your plucking hand to around the 18th fret and play there, it sorta gets the sound of an upright
I need to hear “around the world” on a double bass now, just a double bass overdriven in general
There is an error he used the same sound of the electrical behs for the double behs
Recently got a free double bass the sound post had fallen the side was separating at the c shaped cutaway it was missing the bridge the tuners the tailpiece and the end pin also it had a huge crack in the top (sorry for butchering the terminology I’m aspiring guitar builder not as knowledgeable in viols )all the required parts total to around $400 US dollars and I’m not sure I want to pay that for a free instrument but I’m going to start a change jar and put some of my allowance in every day until I can get what I need
Dude never get rid of free instruments if they can be saved, it's so much more rewarding to play an instrument you fixed than a new one imo
@@The_Guy_Who_Asked72 I don’t plan on getting rid of it I have trouble getting rid of instruments so no worries
There's a better way to create a doublebass-esque tone. Get yourself a Höfner, mount a piezo onto it, and split it 50/50 (or whatever sounds best) with the neck pickup. Sounds really awesome
Honestly, I think you might get even closer with those strings and a Hofner 500/1 violin bass.
I LOVE SO WHAT
Double BEHS
I've always loved the bass tone on Oye Como Va. It sounds acoustic but it's not!
Neck pickup, tone rolled off, flats and fretless. If it's a hollow body, even better
It passes
Sounds the same but it might be because of that awesome nail pluckin pickup
Sounds pretty good. But it seems like slide wouldn't sound right
Sounds close, but you can still tell. In a mix of instruments, it would be harder to tell.
Definitely needs renaming 'how to make a double bass sound like an electric bass.'
Kind of blue - miles davis. Excelent bass line
The double bass sounded like an electric with that pickup setup mate, you should have just used a microphone lol
That double bass is still bright because of the wood. Is it carved or laminate?
DAY ∞ OF I'VE GIVEN UP ALL HOPE OF YOU DOING A VIDEO ON G.C. GREENE'S BEHS TONE
Can’t go wrong with some good behs 😂
Accurate
What’s going on with that nail file? 😮
I need context for that nail file
Much thinner, but still sounds good!
@grapemanbanjie8875 my ears are garbage 😆
Pretty close but . . . try it without any electronic aids and play on the lowest strings.
Good, time to play Edgecrusher or maybe buy a double bass bow to play Mr Krinkle
The lick
No
Shove a kitchen sponge under the strings on the electric... Down by the bridge.
That's an ancient trick.
So What! Great bass line
Double B E H S
ummmm...correct me if I'm wrong. Those sound like exactly the same recordings
Am I the crazy one or is that fret buzzing I hear on the upright
the strings are thicker than i thought
In my experience, using a wooden material to pickup the sound is much more accurate to how the upright bass actually sounds. Ive played this instrument for about 2 and a half years, and id say you did a 7/10 job.
Good try.
I got the idea of putting fishing strings on a bass idk why
'the licc'
No
Dead on
its not the exact same but I like it
✨Bæs✨
how do pickups pick nylon strings up?
Sounds close but there is no way you can get a rockabilly slap bass sound from a bass guitar.
What bass pickup is that?
Is the nail file optional? 😁
