      Why would you comment that?
It indicates that you default to the assumption that a piece of content you make ends up being a waste of time for the viewer.
Why is that even an option in your world?
Don’t make the first comment an inverse negative.. make it positive through and through, and in a way that creates more engagement!
“Hope everyone found as much value in watching this as I did in making the video!”
For a person who doesn’t know anything about these machines and is on the hunt, I feel the video was a thorough comparison.

I asked a bunch of reps at the apple store whether they recommended M3 with 16gb of RAM or M2 with 24 for photo editing and every one asked the same question: "are you going to use dual monitors?" My answer was that i wasnt even going to use one external monitor, let alone two. All of them said go for M2 with more RAM over M3 with less. So, that's what I did.

M3 also supports AV1 decoding. That will also make a difference for media consumption. Sure, M2 can play it, but it will decode on the CPU and will drain the battery a lot more than native in the M3

Just FYI, i'm a pro and I prefer to use a 15" Air over anything else. Not all of us pro's are doing 4k video renders :). A 15" M3 Air with 24GB Ram is a beast when it comes to front-end dev work. The portability is very welcome too. That single-core speed is very important for the type of work that requires a lot of chopping and changing between micro tasks (like a front-end dev would). When it comes to the actual build time? We're talking 10 seconds vs. 15 seconds (big deal right). This is not a critcism of you (I think your reviews are great), but there seems to be a general bias on youtube macbook reviews towards "pro" meaning "video editor". I guess that makes sense since they probably spend most their time working with video.

I just bought an M2 MacBook Air 8 gigs of ram 512 hard drive costing me $1268 including tax and that’s a killer deal here in Sweden where Apple products are just so expensive. One week ago it would’ve been $1804 for the same machine. I’m just a normal user and don’t need the extra ram. 8 gigs is well enough for me. I have never ever ever had an issue with just 8gigs of ram. However I do need a large hard drive so I went for the larger hard drive and since the 512 version has faster SSD I went with that. I hate carrying around extra hard drives. I love the fact that you can get the old hardware so much cheaper when Apple releases new products. The M chips are so good that the difference is negligible from one generation to the other,, at least for me who isn’t a developer or a content creator or something like that - just a normal computer guy 😂

It's sad that the dual-monitor capability is talked about like it's something amazing when so many PC laptops and even Intel Macs have had this for years. The SSD thing is the same. They nuked it with the M2 only to bring it back and it's looked at like it's an advancement of some kind.

We just got my wife an M3 13" Air (16/512) on sale and it's very impressive. We have 4 14" Pro models (2 M1 Pros, an M2 Pro and my M3 Pro - traded in my M1 Pro 16" for more portable model) and except when I'm doing multiple music tracks on logic the M3 Air would be great in every other sense rather than my 14 Pro for me. Now that Apple add the 16/512 sku BB and Amazon are often offering that model for $200 off which to me is a good price for what you get as you also get the non-binned M3 chip as well.

Thanks for all your informative videos and pointing out the real differences, and this is not a criticism, but correct me if I'm wrong, to rectify the slow SSD problem, wouldn't it be better if we upgrade the 256 to the faster 512 gb on the M2 for the same price? I think the extra SSD goes a long way.
Or another option is to just upgrade the RAM to 16gb, that would solve the swapping problems entirely. I believe either scenarios (16gb RAM or 512gb SSD with M2) is still a better option than the basic M3 at the similar price.
That is if Ray Tracing or gaming is important. But IMO, I'd just save the money and get the basic M2 for work / school, and an iPad / PS5 / Nintendo Switch for games.
I don't think the average college student / employee really needs dual monitor setup. I understand "a lot" of people want that feature, but I also think it's just a few % of the entire user base.
And for those users who need gaming, graphics improvements or dual monitors? I think they already know what they want and the basic M3 Air probably wouldn't match their needs, and need to upgrade their RAM and SSD, or even to a MacBook Pro anyway. Although It's good that Apple gives us this option finally, the M3 isn't that appealing to the average user.

Originally I was thinking of getting a base M3 Air, but at the last minute I decided to get an upgraded M2 from the Apple refurbished store. 16GB of RAM and 512GB storage with an M2 for $1,189 just seems like a better way to go than a base M3 for $1,099 - even though I'm sure the base M3 is more than adequate. Hell, I had the base M1 since it's release and it's remained far beyond adequate not just for basic tasks, but even for light creative work and heavy office work while on vacation (when I didn't want to bring my work machine). That laptop was so good that it was by far the longest I've had a laptop without even an itch to get something new. I ultimately just ended up wanting the newer design more than anything.

Did you see the heat test and throttling on the M3 MacBook Air? When doing a prolonged intensive task, it gets very warm and the OS throttles it. The M2 is not throttled as much as the M3 for the same tasks. So, for some intense, prolonged tasks, the M3 may not turn out to be vastly superior to the M2 when used in the MacBook Air. Since the MacBook Pro has fans to do with the heat, it doesn't require as much throttling.

Air M3 is a powerhouse, just match amount of the ram as you have now on intel. I also had Intel MBP 16" 2019 (fastest upgraded i9-9980HK and 32GB ram). And went with 16GB ram on M1.
MBA M3 16/512 will be blazing fast for the next 4-5 years for sure... M1 still is, after 4 years and M3 is 25-50% faster than M1. Also form factor is much better on MBA 13", 16" is painful to use anywhere other than on desk. Also zero noise, Intel 16" is too noisy and hot. But even 15" Air is much lighter if you prefer bigger screen for media.
I think in your case ram amount is more important than getting M3 pro. You could go with 24GB ram, but not sure if you need it.
Just for comparison, generally speaking, base MBA M3 is 100-150% faster than Intel MBP 16" 2019 (i9-9980HK), using less power, and having much more battery life. Photo processing is 100%+ faster on M3, and GPU is 900% more powerful :-).

I’m looking to buy my first MacBook since high school (my school lent us the MacBook Air 11”) and I’ve been struggling to make a decision! I was originally looking to buy a 13” M3 MacBook air with 16 GB of unified memory and 512 SSD storage. I multitask A LOT when on the computer (20+ tabs on google, 3 word documents, notes, etc), hence the 16 GB. I’ve been told 512 is way better for long term use. I’m in college so i can get apple’s education discount thankfully. But because of this review and other reviews I was thinking of just going with a m2 with the same specs. With the overall discount and the education discount it comes down to $1279 compared to the M3 $1399z. I don’t think I’ll be doing any presentations where i need to connect my laptop to a monitor (considering most of my professors so far have just had us email them our power points). I currently have an iPad Pro which has been my main device for school but I also have a computer at home for personal use (gaming, writing, etc). I plan to keep the laptop I buy for as long as i possibly can (probably until apple stops updating it). Thoughts?

Are you planning on looking in ML/AI? If so, my guess is that in the 2 year and beyond a lot of you heavy lifting is going to be done on a server level system. Often this online with something the school has or commercial services like AWS, MS Azure, or similar service with GPUs. So, your laptop will be used for a lot of smaller tests, but you will do the heavy lifting on a cloud-based system.

Dynamic caching has nothing at to do with RAM. It is all about how the GPU cores can dynamically relocate how much on die cach is used for registers, tile memory and cache. Sys memory capacity has no impact on this it is all about better GPU utilization in particular for branching GPU tasks were it is different to forecast the registers and local-memory needs pre flight as you don’t know the branching.

I just moved from the 2017 MacBook pro like yours and I had the same dilemma. I took a 14" M2 pro and a 13" M2 air home to compare them and the 14" is heavier and bulkier than the old 2017 13" pro, which I didn't like because I travel a lot. Then, I compared the screens (everyone said the pro blows away the air) and found them to be almost identical. Then I did some editing and rendering of photos in Lightroom and Photoshop and both were blazing fast. The air is the same thickness as the old 2017 pro and also has the same number of ports (2 thunderbolt) but you also get the magsafe so it frees up both ports. I didn't need the extra ports of the pro. I returned the MacBook pro and kept the air, for the weight savings and the (very small) cost savings.

If anyone study accounting or finance, you might understand what is depreciation mean.
We need to figure out the depreciation and useful life in order to value the MacBook.
For example, if a MacBook with 9 Useful life, the MacBook M2 today is $1400, and the MacBook M3 is 1800 today, then getting the M2 is better than the M3 MacBook.
However, if next year, M2 is still $1400, and M3 is $1600, both are same value, then people are picking the M3 more is better than the M2.
For tech lovers who often replace the MacBook every year, it is recommended buying the latest MacBook because you will replace it next year.

What most people buying Apple must know is to buy following your need because those machines are really expensive.
