It's taken me over four years to grow a literal dream I had one night, into something that I'm willing to turn into a comic/graphic novel.
Haven't started on drawing yet because I'm a little rusty and I'm going for a more realistic art style. I'm also having trouble coming up with the filler between the more important moments.
However I day dream alot so I may have created an entire universe stemming from a magic rock and a power suit... so
Awesome video JP! For anyone reading this comment, I highly recommend the book even if you aren't making a comic, it's great and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
It's really cool to see behind the scenes process and some of the early character concepts. I like the early Maggie but definitely think the final version of her is best!
You're super cool JP, nice Parapper shirt!
I'd be super interested in a coloring for printers video.
Thank you so much!
Just bought your book as a self birthday gift. Honestly, sharing your knowledge with us is a gift in itself. Thank you good sir!
Thank you for sharing your process. Really awesome framework for someone new to comic creation!
Super inspiring. This is super helpful. And I love the wall colors in your office
Thanks JP I read your comic, it was GREAT!
Brilliant advice and a useful, realistic step-by-step process for publishing a graphic novel.
This was very helpful and inspirational. Among other items on my way-to-long list of personal projects ideas, I've recently wanted to try making a comic. It seemed very daunting at first, but this has given me a much clearer idea of how to approach it. Thank you for this excellent video!
My kids and I love this book! I didn't look into JPCooper having a UA-cam channel until now but I plan on watching his How to Draw series with my kids as well.
This book got my son super excited to making his own comics and now he wants to be an author/cartoonist/parent. Now my daughter is getting a little older she's having a lot of fun making her own drawings as well.
Thank you for this video!
I needed a simple step by step to know what path I’m going. I’m studying storyboard with my art major rn so the “layout” you talk about is actually a great idea! I’m a visual learner. Anyways I hope your safe and doing well throughout this pandemic .
This really helped my next unit in writing is graphic novels! I was so happy but I did not know how to make h Them and o guess it was my lucky day because this was all I needed! Keep up the great work JP’
I'm working on my own graphic novel, and this video helped me so much! Thank you! 💗
Thank you so much! I’ve been wanting to write SOMETHING since I was about 5 and I couldn’t find a decent video and I found this! Now I actually have a good “Castle”
I love to draw and make comics! This video really helped me out!
Great video, this was very informative. Would really love to see a video of coloring comics!
thank you so much for this video!! i'm currently working on a comic before presenting it to editors and your advices helped me a lot!! i'm definitely gonna check out your book!
also, i'm really interested in a video about colors for a printed comic!!
Awesome!!! Thank you so much for leaving this comment :D
hey, how's your comic going? i was wondering how much you had to pay an editor to look through your script or thumbnails.
I loved this video. I’ve been working on comics now for a few years and am now working on creating my graphic novel. Your video gave me inspiration. Today, I bought your book and am looking forward to reading it when it arrives in the mail. Keep smiling :)
Thank you!!! Have fun making your graphic novel!!!
This was extremely helpful, thank you!
Very inspiring
Really cool JP!
Such a helpful video! Would love to see a video for more about cmyk colours :) also about your process finding a printer? Thanks so much, have a good one!
Mate this is amazing. Great job, I'm interested in reading the novel. It's great to know that I've been doing it correctly all along, and that I'm not alone in this quite pedantic process of making a comic. Unfortunately, I've wondered many times to myself 'what the hell am I doing.' But it's worth it, thanks. :)
Thank you very much for the video! I am using it to build my graphic novel unit for fifth graders. This video is perfect!
That's amazing! Thank YOU!
Great video! Congrats on your book 🎊
Love it!
This helped a lot, thank you very much!
I would like to see a video about coloring comics in the future. I mainly ask because I dabble in drawing cartoons myself & some day I hope to write my own comic book. This video has helped me out a lot.
Looking for a creative book for my 13 year old kid, instead of seeing him spending too much time on his iPad. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your enthusiasm!
Hey JP, I love your video. I've watched it about a half dozen times. I got your book and took a bunch of notes. You mentioned doing a video of how to color the comic and do the flatting. Have you done a video about how to figure out the right color palette, how to flat, and how to shade and highlight the comics? Thanks again for all your work. Love your stuff!
Thanks so much! There are LOTS of videos out there about coloring comics. You'll have better luck searching around than waiting for me ;)
@@JPCoovert sounds good. Thanks again!
Super helpful !
Please make a video of all the tools you need ! :) thankyou
amazing video
Yes please make a video of the actual specifics coloring for comics. Thanks
great video! I'm planning to become a midwife but i plan to make graphic novels too.
I want to write a graphic memoir, a graphic novel about gypsies during the holocaust, and much more.

Hi. Is your book availible in E-book format?
hey which site did you use to make your comic
What's up. Could you guys at theshredquarters do a line where customers can choose a discontinued board graphic and you guys print it? Nice vid by the way!
They do a big tournament in the summer to chose a board to reprint :)
thanks you i have a class
project it was too much
Thank you so much! This video was a huge help. I’m a inspiring graphic novelist and I was frustrated at my self made process on making my comic book. My one problem is finding a good free to use licensed font for my book. If you know anything about that, that would be mega helpful. I also wanted to ask if you knew anything about getting your comic out there. I’m a inde artist that does this stuff as a hobby so i don’t know much about publishing but if you have any advice on where to get started (self publishing, etc) that’d be cool too. If you end up seeing this and don’t have time to respond no biggy. I just thought you would like to know your vid was super helpful and you are epic. 👌
Thanks! I've bought a couple of good fon'ts off of Creative Market before. You could also try making your own, which is definitely the cooler option! My biggest advice for getting your comic out there, is find a place online people are reading the type of comic you are making and put it there, for free, often, and on a schedule! Good luck and keep it up!
@@JPCoovert Thank you! 👏👍👌
i have to make one for english
kick,punch...killer shirt
Thanks for the tips, you have a very Crispin Glover kinda voice btw
Thanks so much for sharing this. Your break down and encouraging attitude is awesome. I love how you break this down and honestly it's very similar to writing novels. Just one brick at a time! Did you ever do the "how to color comics" video? Can't find it!
Thank you! No coloring comics video, but there are TONS of those already on UA-cam.
yoyoyo amazing
I have an amazing story I want to tell.
color video please!
How long was this process from idea to sending it off to the publisher? I just started my first book, got done with the script and started drawing, but I would love to know how patient I should be with the process. It's all so new!
It super depends and varies a ton depending on the artist. This book took almost 2 years, but there were large breaks in between script, thumbnail, pencil, and final art stages. My big advice would be to time out how long it takes you to do each step and calculate for yourself. Good luck!!!
@@JPCoovert Thank you so much!
Play cazy kick please
Wait!! Halt ✋🏾... where did you get that shirt?? Is that the Parappa Tha Rapper Onion guy?? 😃
Yep! I made it ;)
Can you play fgeetv's Ape chace
can we work together in a comic book store one day
I love you 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
MDC graphic novel syllabus
So. Basically:
1. Do a script
2. Draw it
3. Ink it
4. Color it
You just made your first graphic novel! Congrats!
JP Coovert I’m doing one right now! I’m really excited and commited to it. My script is half way done for chapter 1 and I’m excited to start drawing! I have a few questions:
1. What paper would I use for actually drawing the comics
2. How do I put the comics into my computer
3. What system could I use to color.
@@cancelled148 Nice! Good luck! Paper choice is totally up to you. Whatever works well with the tools you're drawing with. If you are drawing on paper you'll need to scan each page in. There should be plenty of youtube tutorials on how to scan artwork properly for print. For coloring, I use Adobe Photoshop, but there are lots of different options and TONS of tutorials on coloring comics!
JP Coovert Alright! Thank you! Also if I inked traditionally can I still color it on computer?
@@cancelled148 Yeah! you can do any of the steps on the computer or traditionally at any point!
Hey i just sub!!!!
♥️♥️❤️
I was gonna say how interesting this is, but I realized the comment bar changed and wtf
I wanna write a graphic novel/ comic book. But I'm not really good at drawing.. Got any tips?
Check out some of my other videos for drawing tips. Practice is the most important thing for improving. Would also suggest to start small, maybe an 8 page comic. Then do a 16 page story, and so on. Good luck!
If you would say you got 'no talent' in drawing, AND, you don't really have an artistic style for your characters in mind, AND, you don't read much comics and the like, yeah then go for looking for an artist. If you've got a basic idea of the visual style for your characters, and have a sense for comics, by all means improve your skills. And if you have fun drawing and making it, people will enjoy reading it. Though, this is up until finding a publisher; presumably a hurdle. Who for myself, I hope will steer me in the right direction once I'm there.
where can I get the panel templates and comic book-related templates?
They are easy to make yourself with a pencil or pen, paper, and a ruler!
@@JPCoovert thanks :)
Can you make a comic without drawing and editing on a computer
Like in a traditional scan n print way
Can u pls tell me
I want to make one
Also who is your publisher
You absolutely can! In fact, the book explains how to do everything without a computer. Draw a Comic! was published by First Second.
@@JPCoovert Thanks ! You have been very helpful. I will surely buy your book.
What app do you use to draw
Photoshop :)
PLZ I NEED HELP. I’m young, but one day I want to publish a book. So I guess I can start early…. Kinda. Well my question is…. When u go onto photoshop, how big is the page. Like, how tall or wide is it. Hope u can answer my question
The page is the same size you plan on printing it! Make sure the resolution is high too, like 300 dpi.
@@JPCoovert thx
@@JPCoovert is 350 dpi, or should it be higher
@@JPCoovert also how do I print it. Like, what app could I print it from. I’m using ibisPaint to draw but do I use a sort of photoshop to print it. Just tell me what I app or site I should print it on
How long did this take you?
Almost 2 years, but there were LOTS of breaks in between big work sessions.
Alternative title=How to make a comic of how to make a comic
Hahaha! I'm gonna use that when explaining the book in the future!
i watch youtube 16 days an hour,
*yea*
it isnt good dont do it, it took me awhile to do the comic book too
Gahh gahhhhhh what a process😆😆great job
