  • Introducing the Retrotink 5x Pro. This is an analogue to digital upscaling solution for taking analog signals and displaying them in HDMI format. most usually used for video games consoles from yesteryear, but i wanted to see how it does with video signal as well.
    --The first automatic optimal phase algorithm to produce the sharpest image with zero adjustments needed beyond selecting the base mode.
    --The first custom developed FPGA-based Motion Adaptive Deinterlacing algorithm specifically for games to make 480i titles shine without adding lag or flicker.
    --The first high resolution (1080p and above) video scaler that is capable of covering virtually all analog inputs: composite, S-video, component and RGB out of the box.
    --Fully compliant CEA-861 standard 1080p modes to maximize compatibility across displays and capture cards.
    --High quality polyphase scaling at both integer and non-integer factors for sharp pixels without shimmer.
    --Seamless handling of resolution switches for drop free gaming on titles that switch between 240p and 480i.
    0:49 settings
    2:05 8mm tape (video8)
    3:15 betamax
    4:00 VHS-c
    4:40 pre-recorded VHS (movies you'd buy at the store)
    5:11 re-recorded VHS (blank tapes you record at home)
    5:58 conclusion

    Strangely enough this is exactly what I’m most excited for. I’m patiently waiting for my 5x to come in. Tired of waiting for direct VHS capture then processing for at least an hour to deinterlace.

      i didn't mention it in the video, but it seems like it helped with stability of the beta footage at least. you'll notice on the direct capture it had some slight rolling and such, but it seems on the tink side it's much more stabile.

    The 2X was already great for VHS captures and stability, so glad to see that's maintained here!

      i don't know if it was intentionally coded, or justa biproduct of the process, but i did notice more vertical stability on tink footage vs using other methods of capture. interesting.

      yeah. i figured i'd put my game video on hold and do this first, cause i assumed everyone else was going to cover the gaming side, and usually in better detail than i can offer :P

    If I may offer a better HDMI solution for VHS - get any VHS DVD combo unit recent enough to have HDMI out. I use a Panasonic DMR-EZ48V, which can deinterlace and upscale VHS content to 720p and 1080p over HDMI. You'll need something to break the copy protection, but it makes a world of difference.

    • @khuntington

      since i'm using the elgato 4k60 pro pcie card, i'm just using elgatos capture software. there may be better software that allows you to use more codecs, but i haven't taken the time to research.

    This is the exact information I was hoping to find out. I'm limited in equipment to convert my VHS tapes to digital and the 5X looks like the perfect missing piece, especially since I can do so much more with it otherwise.
    I have a lot of gameplay recorded on video tape and this had not worked when I had tried to transfer to DVD in the past. I don't think my DVD recorder was able to differentiate 240p from 480i. If you are able to, could you test this too? I don't see why the 5X would have any issue with this, but I'm still curious.

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  3 роки тому +1

      yeah. to be honest, a lot of my let's plays on youtube were sourced from vhs. cause i'd record the game to tape while playing on the couch, then digitize later to edit. so it may take a couple days but i could run some stuff through real quick just to see....

    Hey! Thanks for sharing. There isn't much online about this sort of use-case. Do you have a Time Base Corrector in your 5x Pro pipeline or is this solely your old tapes > 5x PRo > Elgato capture card?

      just now seeing this, but we've already touched base on twit. i have no idea why, but i just now noticed that i guess about 3 weeks ago my settings were changed to no notifications channel wide. i just assumed no one was commenting on anything. hah.

    I have a canopus ADVC 110 that I've used for logging and capturing analog footage directly into Premiere. Was thinking of getting the 5X for gaming anyway, but if this could replace the ADVC 110 too then it'd be a no brainer. Any thoughts on whether or not I should keep it? Selling the ADVC 110 would definitely help lessen the pain my wallet is going to feel if I get the 5X.

    I already have a Tink-5x for gaming, just not used for recording or streaming. Do you know if there would be any impact of quality in using a cheaper HDMI capture device versus an El Gato? I'm only looking to archive my VHS collection.

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  2 роки тому +2

      that i don't know, because i only have the gato for hdmi capturing.

      @linvol20 Рік тому

      A few years ago I tried using retrotink 2x pro with one of those cheap hdmi devices and i didnt continue to do that process because I found that using dv mini camera with the s-video straight to a pc tv tuner card gave me the best results. I dont know if the elgato would have gave me good results.
      I also tried the firewire but funny enough I preferred the s-video footage. Maybe the tv tuner was doing better bc i believe it had a comb filter and de interlacer. I dont have the computer with me atm to verify.

    In my current setup I keep having video dropout issues when the tape is very old or well worn. I know it’s because the upscaler I’m using drops video when the signal is poor, but outside of buying a zillion dollar time base corrector I’m having a hard time. I wonder if the buffering and fast resolution switching on the 5x might help.

    • @samuraistrike1
      @samuraistrike1 2 роки тому +1

      The Retrotink 5x will help with that since it has a triple buffer option that is highly compatible with pretty much all consoles

      did you end up getting a 5x for this? I'm in the same boat. I have a RetroTink 2x Pro but it's dropping frames as I attempted to record from the VCR to my Elgato (internal) capture card.

    Any recommendations for capturing at 1440p and archiving VHS footage (particularly on a Mac, if possible)? I've seen a Magewell USB gen 2 external device recommended elsewhere, but don't think that'll capture as high as 1440p.

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  3 роки тому +1

      that i'm not sure of. i just tried to set the tink to 1440p60 and use the elgato 4k60 pro to capture at 1440p, but it truncates it to 1080p60. mike said the 1440p mode still has a horizontal raster of 1920, and that some devices may be confused by that. the 1440p mode is set to where you use your monitor settings to squish it to 4x3 horizontally. elgato apparently doesnt understand that. other than that, i have no idea. i've never thought about capturing standard def at 1440p, so thats never been something that i've looked into to be honest.

    why does the retrotink help console picture quality but not VHS and LaserDisc?

    • @khuntington
      @khuntington  Рік тому +2

      i think it's because it emphasized sharp pixels. tape is not sharp pixels. because like say mario, is a grid of pixels that make the shape of a man, if you just quadruple every pixel, it's still a pixelperfect render of mario... just bigger. since tape its video, it has no pixels. so the tink is working in a different manner than it was designed.
