Hey everyone! I just wanted to say thank you to Linus, Reece, and the rest of the LTT team for featuring me and my PC build in this video. I've been watching LTT videos for a long time so I'm super stoked to actually be in one of them! And if you're in the area and you need a PC built, feel free to reach out. I'd be happy to help!
but to be fair. 17 teen year old, actually not ripping people off and working to his best to afford college is a great thing. its cool u reached out to him
This is not so great as you make it sound, it is basically the orphan-crushing machine. A 17 year old forced to work in order to get education when he should just act as a kid. Education, no matter the level, should not cost money, I can't believe how this is a hard concept to get or even a polarizing issue. It should be a right everywhere.
@@BastardWithExtraLives Im 19 and im doing the same thing, its really not as bad as you make it sound. First of all you are gaining knowledge from building pc's this means better cable management and overall better build quality, 2nd of all you are basically making your own business which means tracking expenses and profits therefore preparing you for better budgeting skills. If you wanna call it sad, then by all means you can call it that way but I think of it as a better alternative than getting a part-time job. I agree that college in america/canada should be free (or at the minimum have a loan provided) but the business itself is not an issue in my eyes.
@@BastardWithExtraLives You still have to respect the hustle. Kid is doing something to earn money, it's building experience and skill. Clearly there's room for improvement, and if he keeps at it, not only will he have a good starter fund to make further education easier, but he also has a solid skillset to work with even if his chosen path in education doesn't pan out as well as he hopes. I agree education is more expensive than it should be, but the teachers need a salary, facilities need upkeep and materials need purchasing, and the tax dollars aren't going to cover it all. The real issue is, at least in my opinion, how student loans are the most predatory and unfavorable loans of all.
Yo Kim, I had to work at a restaurant at 15 . Grocery store from 16-18. Banker mid summer before college. If much rather have learned how to build computers and something I enjoy then be a slave to the system . But hey 20 years ago it wasn’t that amazing. I’d consider it lucky to be 17 doing a side huddle you enjoy.
😂 Ketan's facebook ad actually showed up during the WAN show that was filmed at the Langley house. While linus and luke were complaining about the state of misleading facebook marketplace ads. Linus called Ketan's ad a scam at the time. Glad he got a redemption arc, and he turned out to be a legitimately nice guy that wants to help others.
That's so funny haha. I didn't know that at all. And no, definitely not a scam at all. Funny enough, Facebook does take my ads down every once in a while because they think it's spam though so I can't blame them. There are a lot of 10+ year old PCs on there though that get prettied up for sale to unsuspecting people. It's shameful really.

Its exactly what I do for my local community. I build computers for businesses during the day at my company, but when I go home, I do not mind doing personal builds for free
I think this was a lost opportunity to give the hobbyist way more than just the computer, even if it was a bunch of ltt merch. His story elevated this video, the dude loves building computers so much he does it for free on his spare time. That's pretty epic.
it's interesting to see this perspective, like Keatan is pretty cool to help people for free, but it's not such a big deal that he deserves more than a free $900 USD computer to resale that he put no money into, or a made up position at the company, when they may not be hiring, because he was a cool guy.
Not gonna lie, I'd love to see LTT do something special for Keaton. Dudes a wholesome guy building PC's for free and making sure people don't get scammed. You love to see it
Linus said you have to get super lucky to find a guy like that, there's probably a guy like that in every big city. Not to downplay Keaton, he is awesome, but there are many of us like that out there!
@@joshcryeri mean almost all of us do that for our friends & family, they give us a random use case, and a budget, and we spend a good 30mins finding the best deal for laptop/pc specs/mobile/any gadget etc. Etc. Etc. But still he did for a random on fb.😮
Honestly, I can see where the hobbyist is coming from. Any time a friend says they want to build a PC, I get excited. I love building computers and if I had the time commitment, I'd probably try to get into this type of thing myself.
@@matrixfull If everyone who says "we need more people like him" would just be like him, we would have many more people like him. "I'm a project manager and I work from home, so I have a lot of free time" That would explain a lot of project managers I've met. That aside, seems like a genuinely nice fella.
@@sportscardude I provided a parts list for the build. I don't charge a build fee so whether I buy the parts or they do, it's the same cost either way.
I literally do the same thing as the guy who won.... I make my income through the 5% cashback credit card, The UA-cam content, The Amazon Affiliate Income & the customer pays nothing other than the cost of parts, which I order with my own money to get that 5% cashback (never leave a balance) and they pay me nothing until they either come get the PC or see the content on it before shipping it. That made me really happy to see someone else doing something similar!!!
What's hilarious is that by using your credit card to get 5% cashback you are making just as good (or better for that matter) of margins on your builds than some real big businesses. Most places are happy with anything more than 5%. Here in the states Grocery stores and restaurants would kill for 5% margins. Most of them are making 3% or less. For every Apple that has 600% margins there are thousands of businesses making it on single digit margins.
I do this too but with laptops. Usually between 5 and 7 percent combined cashbacks. But i do also ask a small fee for transfering files and setting up accounts.
Mine is worse, I had no screw that could fit so I have the handle of a screwdriver resting on my NVMe, with the tip of the screwdriver taped to the bottom of the case using duct tape.
I love the guy who did it for free out of passion. not only is he so wholesome, but he also does it with genuine passion in a market where a lot of people skip, hoping price to performance would get better next gen.
@@iroccata To be a millionaire already requires not having a good heart. And of course a good heart is needed. But if everyone had those conditions (good paying job + free time), a lot more of these kind of actions would naturally happen.
@@Kleyguerth So winning the lottery makes you a bad person in your book. Money doesn't make you a bad person, and poverty doesn't make you a martir. Acts of kindness are shown regardless of economic status. In my opinion most people are selfish self centered beings, and although this is more easily seen with rich people who have something to show off, most people would be that way if they had the chance. So in the end, we should appreciate what this guy is doing, because it's not because of his money nor his free time.
@@iroccata Winning a lottery is an exception. Amassing large amounts of money requires exploiting others, i.e. a bad heart. The system we currently live in creates people who are selfish and self centered, they are rewarded with more money. This is why you see it in rich people, the system selects those to be richer. This guy is doing something awesome, and not because of his money or free time, but it's his money and free time that ALLOWS him to do it. Without those he wouldn't be doing it, not because he wouldn't want to, but because he would simply not be able to. This is what I'm pointing out. I'm not diminishing him in any way, I'm pointing out how bad is the system we live in, in which not many people are in the position to do the same. I believe there are a lot of people who would do these kind of things, but they simply lack the time and financial stability to do it.
I get Ketan. I love building PCs too. Recently built my wife's and mine as near-identical systems for work. Build my dad's as well and my leftover parts become media machines, NAS and even spare systems for less resource-intensive work. I don't do it professionally, but I'm glad I can help friends and family. Of course, my desk cable management sucks, I won't send pics, but hey building PCs IS fun :)
The "hobbyist" guy was amazing, but I also have a lot of sympathy for the TeenageEngineering guy. He builds decent systems for a decent price and at the age of 17 he created what seems like a viable business, not for profit but to pay for his education. That's quite impressive. I actually feel a little bit bad for him that he has to do that at such a young age just to get education.
I love that there's people out there like Ketan that help folks out with building a well running machine just as a hobby without upcharging. I've build two now & onto my third. My first build was because I wanted something better than an off the shelf option & didn't trust anyone and didn't like the pricing on paying retail for a custom PC. I enjoyed my first build so much, that I'm on my third. I would build them for the same reason if I could afford the endless supply of parts. Good job Ketan. Good job to the teenager too who is saving to go to college. It would have been nice to see him get some traction on his side gig of building so he can make some good headway on the college funds.
Yeah. There is a lot you can debate about system builds (AMD or Intel, AMD etc.) but this system was a really strange combination of pc parts. Especially the Mobile CPU Part is fishy as hell. You can do that on your own free time and with your own system, but not as someone who wants to sell systems on a professional level.
@@tobiaskunterding5907 I bet that he got those parts for half (maybe even less) of price he was charging it. To have profit 300-400USD on PC like this is quite possible. I'm in Pittsburgh, PA. I was turning 39 and had no career. I was almost homeless. I started watching your videos and other UA-camrs and started tinkering and learning. I then started a fake it until you make it business fixing and refurbishing tech. I worked 12 to 15 hour days in the beginning for no money or tiny money. I was Learning and growing. I now have a full hot air rework bench where I perform component level repairs. I have eprom programming equipment. Reball equipment.Thermal cameras. I have a clean room for HDD recovery. I mean, I started fixing tech sitting on my bed using contractors tools. When I made a little money I started buying proper tools. When I had some time I studied circuit design and circuit diagnosing. I am nothing special. Anyone can do it. I have to thank you Linus. I gained a 4 year degree watching your videos throughout the years. I started my tech business because of you. I appreciate your free videos and your understanding of the responsibility you have of honestly informing people here on UA-cam. I have to say, if it wasn't for your videos, I wouldn't have gotten to where I am now.

OK, that "professional" builder should be absolutely ashamed of his work. What a horrendous demonstration of lacking proper understanding and not caring about your final product. There is no world in which you should be ok with selling a computer with that garbage PSU, trash SSD, and you should not even entertain the idea of selling a system with an ES CPU to someone who is not a professional and specifically requested it.
I mean, he really is a professional though. He knows which weird parts he can get without anyone knowing that it's jank, like a used car salesman. He knows what he's doing.
One thing about teenage engineering: I think the worst part and what makes his build look so untidy is that he went with a "southpaw" orientation for the Peerless Assassin. As someone who owns that exact same cooler, I know that it is actually NOT symmetrical. Meaning depending on the orientation it is installed it either sticks out downwards (Southpaw) or upwards (Northpaw) as gamers Nexus called it. It is absolutely critical that the peerless assassin is installwd northpaw as it helps hiding those cables Routed on top. On top of that it looks cleaner as is while the southpaw orientation not only looks like its "hanging" but especially when wearing with ITX or some mATX boards it can sometimes blocks the topmost PCIe slot so the GPU can't be installed

Genuinely think that “The Professional” should be considered a borderline scammer. Using a bunch of no-name parts, that are only known by few people for legitimate issues, is insane…
Not sure I fully agree. 🙂 Would I buy them myself? No. Are most of them fine. Yes. The power supply seems sketchy and definitely a bad choice, but Soju motherboards can be pretty decent and the choice of slow RAM is likely due to the worse memory compatibility of the engineering sample CPU.
@@blunden2 This guy is buying AliExpress parts and charging similar prices as the others who used parts from more reputable brands. Also, who is putting engineering samples in their builds? Especially for individuals who don’t know enough about PCs to go build their own. Not that RMAs go smoothly for any brand but the lack of warranty is also concerning. The performance of the PC was also pretty bad comparatively. I’m not trying to be rude but did we watch the same video?
@@blunden2 Yeah, but you're not saving any money on all these weird parts. You're just getting a shoddier PC. Possibly even a fire hazard with that PSU.

did "the professional" really claim the cpu was the same performance as a 12900k? because in the screenshot he claims it's equivalent to a 12900hx (non-engineering sample)?
I was going to ask that as well. 🙂 Maybe he said so in some other communication that wasn't shown, but if that was the case it would be beneficial to clarify that in some way. 🙂
12900HX = 12900K. They're the same p-cores; e-cores; cache etc. Minor variance in clock speeds, but that's it (ie. 12900K will hit 5.2g by default, while the 12900HX will hit 5.0g). Identical silicon; both unlocked.
Yeah. Me too. But it's not all. Shows he's probably good at his job there see plenty of bad project managers run off their feet all day and are hopeless. A great PM will out perform bad ones and work half the time. Worth more at the end of the day.

Teenage Engineering did such an amazing job for his age. I blew up 1000$ on my pc at that time & I still regret for not researching enough on the parts
@@Miroslawkrynda6477 Just fyi cable management was fine, it only looks bad cuz you made a mix of black and white parts so white cables on black and black cables on white background are very obvious and makes it look like its not cable managed(one of the builds I made recently is similar, I called it the Oreo), but I have no idea why Linus acted like there is no cable management when there werent any cables going right through the middle of everything and etc. I've seen no cable managament builds, this definetely was cable managed even if it wasn't perfect. Excluding the not peeled plastic on the VRM the build hands down looked the best and by a lot, only thing I would change in terms of specs is 750W PSU, Nvme SSD and 5600 CPU to allow for 7700xt GPU and I would stay away from noisy GPUs as there are a lot of people who might complain about noise. That 'professional' build is such a complete sham. No wonder why people can't trust local businesses for builds like this. Big bummer, as I'd rather support a small business than big system integrator, but they pull stuff like this.
18:00 on one hand as a SDE, TPMs (technical program managers) are like some of the most roasted people, on the other hand, when you’re the tech expert between hour friends I absolutely dig the vibes of building PCs for free as a fun hobby
Hey, pro tip; find a hidden place to place a Data Matrix sticker of a number or other handle with logo beneath it, with some basic instructions; such as: _Scan if found_ or something else to that effect. Good people will disassemble higher-value items like GPUs to replace the thermal compound, and hopefully during disassembly someone finds the sticker, follows the instructions and gives it back to you from the kindness of their heart. Of course, scammers might also do this as a way of exploiting kindness to get back a GPU which _really_ isn't lost, but that's the gamble with being kind; engage and you risk losing your freedom by knowingly obtaining stolen merchandise if you think a scam, refuse to act and guilt may take hold.
16:50, I'll have to disagree about that one. Selling a product and saying its performance matches the one of a higher tier is by definition a scam. Maybe not in Canada, but I guarantee you it is in the EU. Also no professional can sell a product without warranty, so there's that too.
The CPU will legitimately get 12900K performance. It's C0 stepping silicon - which is literally identical to the retail 12900K. The only thing you need to do is overclock it yourself, as by default the clock speeds are set lower (4.4g for P-cores, 3.3g for e-cores). These are easily bumped to 5.0/3.7 with minimal tweaking... even using Intel XTU with H610/B660/B760 chipsets (ie. don't need a Z series board). Having said that, it's more for an enthusiast/tinkerer than a casual PC gamer/user... $190usd to for a 12900k is pretty decent though!
A buddy of mine also builds PCs for no profit. The only time he makes a profit is if they want used parts because he can negotiate with used parts sellers to get better deals and slowly builds a supply of extra used parts. So he doesn’t technically make a profit in cash, but his parts collection is growing. He probably only gets one customer per month. Sometimes none.
Kinda wish you'd done more for teenage engineering. Young guy making a decent go of it in a pretty hard world right now. Give him back his computer too, and offer an hour of one of your employee's time to give him some free business or computer building tips or something.
This really isn't even a side hustle though. Why would anybody do this when they could buy the parts themselves and go to a computer store, get them to build it and get some sort of guarantee the system will work without problems for a certain period of time.. Expecting people to do this and meeting up with some random person is very unrealistic in 2024

I mean, yeah. The Hobbyist was obviously extremely cool and deserved the win, but not everybody is in a situation he is in. And in the situation that "Teenage Engineering" was in I think he did a great job honestly. Don't forget, he is only 17, has obviously from what was said at the end a lot more workload (as he did way more PCs at the same time) and also needs to keep some money after the PC is done as he wants to SAVE MONEY through this. I think he should probably do a bit more work on his Software-Side of building the PC (mostly with Fan-Setup) which could improve the first impression of his system a lot (and be less complicated for people who don't know how to configure fan-curves). There is room for improvement with his system but I still hope he continues to have fun with this, get's his money together and maybe starts learning more and more and improving with every system he builds.
I think they stated multiple times that the charge was reasonable and I don't think they reduced any points for that. His build needs improvement and score just reflects that and seems fair.

What credit reliably gets you 5% back?
What's hilarious is that by using your credit card to get 5% cashback you are making just as good (or better for that matter) of margins on your builds than some real big businesses. Most places are happy with anything more than 5%. Here in the states Grocery stores and restaurants would kill for 5% margins. Most of them are making 3% or less. For every Apple that has 600% margins there are thousands of businesses making it on single digit margins.

@@iroccata Winning a lottery is an exception. Amassing large amounts of money requires exploiting others, i.e. a bad heart.

its a pretty common china "CxB" build pc here in brazil, but should be way cheaper than new parts

@@VerifiedNobody oh, I didn't think they represented him wrong in the video at all. I think they did a great job with that.
I just wanted to write an appreciation comment because the comments were almost all about the Hobbyist 😉
@@latech7671 your appreciation is appreciated ;)
I also build gaming computers for people for free , it is actually fun and calming
PC Bro just building computers for fun. Love those kind of people. +1 Hope for Humanity 💙
Linus is getting scammed at least once, calling it now
2:40 whooohooo
He didn't, Well...technically he did but not that scammy
Called it, sorry Linus
I got scammed once on facebook marketplace and never went back 😂 The scammers on there put as much effort into their scams as it would take to just be legit.
Some guy used some shady components in order to make more money, but other than that there wasn't any scamming like "I take your money and disappear".
The hobbyist was amazing. Would be nice to see him award more, heck offer him a part time job assisting with builds and such haha. Its rare to find kind hearted people who do it for the hobby and passion!
Love this video concept!
Man, you should reach back out to teenage engineering (or his parents depending on local laws and minors in videos) and have him on. Teach him some things, maybe give the computer back for him to sell, support his grind. Great video though.
Also other dude's parts budget was higher as he didn't need to pay himself.
Everybody in the Vancouver area is gonna try to find Ketan on marketplace now hahaha
I just got my pc done like this and it worked out amazingly for me. I even got a microcenter deal on my gpu despite not living near one because my builder's partner happened to be there at the time! It worked out amazingly.
LTT should invite the hobbyist guy for a tour and surprise him with some nice hardware to build 😉
If Ketan ends up as LTT staff, this is for sure a match made in heaven.
Very entertaining as always. Love your channel
The "Hi, is this still available?" tagline hit hard as someone that is currently trying to sell something and being let down and ghosted over and over again...
Cable management in the backside with no glass is so effin overrated
Right?! If it works it works. Some cables length, type and orientation is so hard to bend right itll never look good unless a custom length.
Hide it and call er a day
If you’re doing it for yourself, yes, especially since you’ll be able to follow your own “system” later. If you’re building a PC for someone else, that means at some point someone other than you is gonna have to work with it.
Yeah exactly, you don't see it once the panel is on anyways so what's the point?
@@CanIHasThisName And what did you find hard and incomprehensible in the back of Ketan's build? And he chose quality parts for exactly the reason that no-one will have to work with that in a long time.
I have so many cables on mine (even though it's a nzxt h710, so kinda big) that I just shoved everything there and forced the panel 😅
Oh man, what a wholesome guy. Victory well deserved.
"Got lots of free time,Do about 1 or 2 systems a month..."
Hate to tell you this but those things are about to change
How many requests he accepts is still his choice
Give the kid at least a part scholarship! It changed my life, and you can change his too!
i also got my pc done by a guy on facebook but he bought all the stuff 1st then i paid after and he did a very good job i can actully play any game i want now with no lag
The local version of building a PC in a boot in Taiwan.
I do the same thing building pcs as a side hussle, I usually charge about 120-150$ and I build the pc with the owner to show him how it’s done, it’s a lesson more than a build but it’s cool!
That was the absolute smoothest transition to a sponsor that I have ever witnessed
Man, what the "Hobbyist" is doing is something I've wanted to do for a long time and I wish I had started doing it during Covid instead of just investing in building up a server rack and costing me money to scratch that itch, lol.
