We have a bad coyote problem down here, fortunately most of my camping now is in my rooftop tent on my pickup truck, so it’s pretty safe. It must have been a bit unsettling for you, but I’m glad you enjoyed your trip in spite of the noisy neighbors. Be well my friend, and Happy New Year to you.
Thanks for the inspiration. I set up my hot tent and hammock for the afternoon and decided to spend the night while watching your video. That noise in the dark sounded like a beaver dragging a branch through the woods. Too bad you needed to lose some well needed rest. Thanks for the video.
lol. It was quite the event ! The worst part was the leaves rustling. I could not believe that something was not standing there right in front of me. It was so loud. Thanks for watching and commenting and your continued support. Cheers!
Haha I can’t wait to make some. Still have a canoe trip and a fall car camp and the moccasin videos. lol. I’m so backlogged atm. Hope to get out soon for some real winter camping. Happy holidays ! Thanks for all your support this year. 🙏🙏🙏
Nerve wracking beginning, as I suffer here with my head cold. I've had a few of those threatening encounters in the past. But that hot tent with the liner is in my thoughts. I just watched Woodsy in northern Michigan using a 3-season nylon tent for winter hot tenting. She never got the heat higher than -6 Celsius. It was quite an ordeal but her spirit was indomitable. Best wishes to you for the winter season.
Nothing like a nice bowl of warm soup on a cold evenning , It is very nerve racking when you hear a sound coming toward ya in the woods happened to me once ,I wasnt able to sleep after. Could it have been a deer running from coyotes , .tree's and sky were beautiful in the am., tasty looking breakfast cant get much better than that.!. Looks like a nice area to explore in the future , Real nice adventure Thank's for taking us along always a joy to watch.👍
Thank you so much. I’m curious how you found the sound? I had a really hard time getting the sound up enough so people could actually hear what I was hearing in real life. I was honestly amazed at how loud the leaves were rustling and shocked that I didn’t see something standing right in front of me because they made so much noise. it definitely could’ve been a deer running from coyotes? It could’ve been a lot of things. I guess I will never know. Thanks so much for such a wonderful comment and for always being so supportive. I really appreciate you. Happy holidays! 😊
I will admit that haven’t been an avid watcher, but this video held my attention. I don’t have any experience with a hot tent - only cold tent to about -5C. I was intrigued by your set-up. As a solo female, it hadn’t occurred to me that I could carry a stove on my own. I imagined them to be big and bulky. I also got to wondering what the suggested protocol is for dealing with coyotes… I wonder if a whistle or airhorn would work well/better … thinking aloud. If you have thoughts, I’d love to hear them. Your live-action overnight was fantastic - I’m always narrating my own overnights (but without a camera!). I hope to run into you IRL one day (we live/work in the same region, I believe). Thanks for sharing real-life do-able adventures!
Those noises were a little freaky, I'm sure, but great to hear the coyotes, and I'm sure you caught the tree and leave rustler swimming in the morning 😂 thanks so much for sharing.
I don’t think the beaver was making the leaves rustle. I think it was the coyotes running towards my campsite and when I started banging my pan, like I did when I saw the bear, they changed course. I did not hear the beaver chewing during the time I heard the leaves rustling and the coyotes howling and yipping. I assume the beaver was hiding at that time. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you have a wonderful holiday season and a great new year. Thank you so much for all your support this year. 🙏
Hearing that sound in the night I wonder if it was a porcupine? They aren't afraid of anything, and they shuffle like that, not super fast and not slow either. I've more than once heard what I thought was a large animal and gotten out to see a porcupine nearby. I love the way you edited it though - I was waiting for a zombie to pop out or something!! very scary. Nice video though, such a pretty time of year.
What an exciting night! How much sleep did you get between the howling and 6:30 good morning video? Have you ever had an animal such as a snake or rodent get into the hot tent?
I actually slept quite well in between. And no, I have never had any type of animal in my hot tent ever. lol. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment. Cheers.
You are so brave, Christina, to go confronting noises in the night. I would have been terrified. Where all are you presenting next year, besides the Toronto OAS ?
lol. After seeing a bear for the first time in the backcountry, I guess I’ve gotten a bit braver. When I was sitting inside the tent, it sounded like something was literally running right towards my tent and it was really really close. So I had to get out. I was actually better outside of the tent because it showed me that nothing was right there. But it was so loud it sounded like it really was. I will be presenting at the shows below: Toronto OAS - Feb 21,22,23. 2025 Quiet Adventures Symposium March 1, 2025 Canoecopia - March 7,8,9, 2025
lol. Yup. Not as many. Most are only seen by tracks and not heard… except this trip. It is still fall. Winter is generally dead quiet except for many the ice cracking. lol.
I'm glad you brought up knowing the temperature of the water. It sure can help you navigate safety. I've paddled Lake Superior and Lake Michigan growing up in WI in the US. The wind and weather can change quickly on the great lakes and we've been in some hairy situations. Personally, I"ve never been a fan or reintroducing wolves back into the wild like they're doing all over the USA. Like coyotes I think it's a horrible way for any wild life to die by a pack of sharp angry teeth. Makes me sad. I also hate to hear gun shot and the hunters killing animals that time of year. That also makes me sad, but if they are a good shot, it's better than death by a pack. Ugh. I was wondering if what you heard in the leave at 3am was a deer running for it's life. But the filming felt a bit like "The Blair Witch Project". 😂I know a squirrel running in the leaves at night can sound like a bear but whatever it was, it was a larger animal for sure. I never noticed that your canoe was green and black plaid...until I noticed that it matched your shirt. 😄Great 2 part video Christina. Marry Christmas.
Thank you. Yes I was also wondering if it was a deer running for its life. It was def not a squirrel and bears are actually not very loud so could’ve been. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Merry Christmas and happy new year.
Scary nighttime drama 😱😨
lol. It was a fun trip. Always good when something interesting happens.

I was dying of suspense/nerves with you there in the middle of the night !!😮

lol. It sure would.

WOW, what an exciting night! Glad the beaver didn’t take down a tree next to or on top of your tent. 😬 Happy New Year🥳
Cheers! Happy New Year to you too.

@CamperChristina oh geez eh ya that's close. They definitely are active in the fall. Happy holidays to you also and a Happy New year. Thanks so much.

Well I saw a beaver the next morning so assuming it was that but who knows? Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers

I was going to ask if you still have visitors this time of year. Looks like the answer is yes.
lol. Yup. Not as many. Most are only seen by tracks and not heard… except this trip. It is still fall. Winter is generally dead quiet except for many the ice cracking. lol.
