    Nobody is as perfect and squeaky clean as Shohei Ohtani. There had to be SOMETHING. Didn't know that something would involve the FBI!

      Ippei is more than a mere interpreter. They are best friends and more like an older big brother to Shohei. Ippei said he spends more time with Shohei than with his own wife. Ippei is there to help him train, probably runs all his errands, sets his schedule appointments, pays his bills, maybe arranges his meals and travel, and is his personal assistant. Ippei probably knows more about Shohei's life than anyone, even Shohei's wife and parents.

      I have access to all of my parents' accounts because they are elderly and asked me to take care of their finances and legal affairs. I easily set up access to their various accounts over the internet without talking to a single person. All I needed was their name, banking account numbers, their social security number and birth dates. One or two websites asked for a password, which I had, or a current transaction amount on one of their statements. It's surprisingly easy how you can give yourself access to someone's accounts with a little knowledge.

    I don't know if I lent money or if it was stolen, but one thing I can say for sure is that Ohtani absolutely does not engage in gambling. That's because playing in Major League Baseball has been his dream since childhood. He doesn't indulge in things like partying or drinking; he only focuses on baseball practice. He doesn't seek enjoyment outside of baseball; winning is the greatest joy in his life. While I'm not a die-hard fan of his, I know that much. He's been that kind of person since he was excelling in Japan. He's the kind of person who could be featured in Japanese school textbooks at such a young age. However, because he's a kind person, there's a slim possibility he might help repay debts if asked by Mizuhara, who supported him since his days in Japan. But if he knew it was a crime, Ohtani wouldn't assist. Even if Mizuhara is like a non-blood-related brother to him, I don't think he would do anything to ruin his own baseball career because he's living the dream he wished for as a child.

    The interpreter is the fall guy but even that angle is looking less credible by the hour. Leaving aside the hypocrisy of MLB being in bed with the gambling industry the sport doesn't work if players are allowed to get away with gambling. It's fatal to the integrity of the sport for one, and I don't mean old fashioned things like "honor", I mean actual important things like credibility. Sports doesn't work as sports if people think everything is rigged and that outcomes are predetermined. And sports don't work as a thing for people to wager on if they know that outcomes are rigged. It's bad for business all around.
    People need to feel confident that the thing they're watching is real. If it isn't then it dies. Why would anyone watch a sport if they knew that the outcome of the game was a foregone conclusion? And why would anyone place a bet on an event where the outcome was predetermined? Once you go down that road you're the WWE. You are just "sports entertainment" rather than actual sports.
    Ergo, and no matter how big a star/cash cow Ohtani is, if he's found to be gambling, he needs to be Pete Rose'd out of MLB forthwith and for life.

  • @omgbygollywow

    The most reasonable explanation of what happened is that Shohei tried to pay off his friend's (more like an older brother) debt. But when Shohei's attorney realized that even paying off someone's debts (Ippei was using an illegal gambling organization to place Ippei's bets) was technically a violation of United States gambling laws, even though Shohei was naive and ignorant of those gambling laws, they said Shohei didn't know anything at all in order to distance Shohei from this mess. I think at worse there was an attempted cover up, even though it was to cover up Shohei trying to help out his friend in deep trouble. Ippei failed Shohei. The spokeman who had Ippei make the original interview confessing his addiction to ESPN failed Shohei. And Shohei's attorneys failed Shohei. The ironic thing is that the most likely reality is that Shohei was trying to be a good friend to help Ippei pay off his debts, and he is actually the only good guy in this whole scenario. Everyone else around him effed up and yet Shohei is the one who will get hurt.

    Wow, each one of these idiots is talking out of their asses without knowing the whole story. They straight up went to implicating Shohei of gambling without evidence. I doubt they even read the ESPN article fully. They just hear some surface news and jump to half-assed conclusions and speculations. Terrible journalism.

      If these wire transfers came from Ohtani’s account, he 100% sent them. Wire transfers are incredibly scrutinized, and when it is for $500k… it’s basically a cavity search.

    • @omgbygollywow
      @omgbygollywow Місяць тому

      @@TheDeepShallow Maybe he did send them, but if he did, it was most likely to help his friend. But to insinuate and speculate that Shohei was gambling, that is irresponsible and borders on slanderous. People need to learn to wait for all the evidence to come in and the investigation to be completed before spouting off unfounded accusations and allegations. When I was a kid in school, they taught that, but these wannabe "journalists" are simply trying to drum up sensationalist drama for click views. Pathetic.

      @@omgbygollywow Paying off the debt is no different than being the get away driver in a bank robbery. Sure, you didn’t hold up the bank yourself but you are party to the offence and got your boys out of a jam.
      It makes no difference if he was the one gambling, if he sent the money to the bookie, he is party to the offence. Along with wire fraud for illegally labeling it a “loan”.

    All is takes is a weak link in Othani's financial team and the interpreter has access to his account (an accountant who might get a cut of the money as agreed upon by the interpreter, etc.) By the time Othani finds out its already in a federal investigation, headed to the press, etc. So naturally, a team of lawyers is going to scramble to come up with things to say and may retract what they are saying to look as good as possible.
