- In Part 2 of my Missing Coach video, I briefly touched upon the fact that Mattel still contained the original rushes for the classic series, as the remasters contain alternate takes compared to the original VHS release.
So I made this compilation video showing all the differences in the first 3 seasons.

That’s why I prefer the original unrestored versions in my opinion.

I have a 2000 CD of The Beatles’ UK number ones which has a TERRIBLE stereo remix. It’s put the music on the left and the vocals on the right. It’s awful.
Yikes, I had no idea the shots were THAT different in the remasters. I thought it was just that one shot in "coal".
It's very minor for sure and doesn't affect my enjoyment for the episodes (for the most part), but honestly if possible, I hope someone out there could do a re-remaster of the series using the vhs shots (though touched up a bit to match the colors on the restored footage), cause I think it'd be nice to have a version that's restored yet looking like the vhs original.

My theory is when it came to rescanning episodes, they couldn't get go put original shots and original editings.

Actually, those complete series remasters were released after the absorption. Mattel absorbed HiT in February 2012, whereas the Complete Series DVDs came out in October 2012.
But Mattel probably get Hit’s Restored Episodes and Original Film Reels. I am a Little Unsure.
@@BaboDex No. The model episodes from S6-12 never had restored versions becuase they look good just the way they are.
No I'm pretty sure the restored versions of the classic series are from 2004 actually.
@@HenryFan1911 those were remastered for DVD, and reissued in 2010. 2012 is when all the film reels were dug out and rescanned for the restored versions. Restored versions of episodes made it onto new home media titles from 2004 onward, such as Thomas' Halloween Adventures (US), The Early Years (US), The Best of Thomas, Percy and James (UK), prior to the release of the restored complete series releases in late 2012. The VHS titles issued onto DVD featured the VHS masters, very similar to how Series 1-3 from 2004/2010 just used VHS masters. Remastered versions were the 2004/10 complete series DVDs, 2012 was the aforementioned restored versions, and UK compilation DVDs from 2000-2003, just used tape masters but were slightly cleaned up for DVD, with some restored episodes sprinkled in.
@@dannythehipster5644frankly the fact that they just used the VHS transfers for the 2004 and 2010 Series DVDs is just lazy if you ask me, regardless of the fact that the 2012 DVDs aren't in sync or using entirely the original footage you gotta love the restoration quality it is one of the best restorations ever if Mattel did a Blu-Ray or even 4K restoration of the original series using the original versions titles and episodes this would look fantastic if the restoration was good like this one (quality wise not to mention in sync)
I've got the mid-2000s DVDs of the first two series. This was the first time Thomas had been on DVD and, as far as I can remember, I don't think I saw Henry crash into the station wall in Coal. I haven't watched them in over 10 years (I'm a bit old now), so I can't exactly remember what the picture quality is like but I think it's a big improvement on the originals.

I knew there were differences between the VHS versions & remasters but never knew there were THIS many! Great video as always Nick :)!
The sing a long songs by Mike and Junior, and stock footage in "Paint Pots and Queens" had some sort of restored/remaster footage too. They had a different quality then the restored and remaster footage.
Im glad someone else gave notice to GWR Studios. Sad to see him move to another channel and stop the Thomas content.
Great video of a side by side comparison of the original vs the restored Thomas episodes. I can clearly remember some points after watching them. I own The Early Years DVD in 2004. But either way, it was great.

To be honest with you, I never knew there changes of scences in every episode in three seasons. I really am surprised to see those differences.
What an amazing comparison. I mean, I could tell that the trucks pushing Thomas...was slower... Henry bumped into the station and then went forward, Ben didn't appear on-screen, etc, but I didn't know the eye movement was different.
And so, you upload alternate takes too? That Kakyoin's shoes won't hold me back much longer...next stream beware.

Noticeably nothing we know from The Missing Coach, so the chance of all the original footage that was shot still existing is very high. Same for the Down The Mine pilot (with the one shot we know)
With all these changes I'm just now seeing, I feel like I've been watching Thomas *wrong* my whole life...

S1-7 deserves to be on Blu-Ray.
I can happen since they where 35mm recording and can be scanned in HD or
Seasons 1-7, alongside Magic Railroad, Tugs, & Jack & the Pack can be on 4K blu-ray since 35mm can reach 4K resolutions. Seasons 8-10 plus Calling All Engines would be on SD blu-ray due to being shot on SD cameras, and season 11-onward, plus all the subsequent specials would be on blu-ray due to being filmed/animated in HD.

@@newguy186 There’s some legal problems with who actually own Tugs, so I don’t think that can come to Blu-Ray. Let alone a DVD release.

I watched the complete season 3 from the channel referenced in this video and it uses the redubbed version of th narration. I prefer the older VHS version cos the Trust Thomas & Escape tapes were what i grew up with.

Can you talk about another lost Thomas media - the Valeriy Nikitenko Russian dub? All I found was Alexei Borzunov's dub.

What about the sides of the screen often being cropped out in the restored version, while the original shows more of it? Like in The Flying Kipper?
Hi Nick, I have been analyzing the outros to the series for differences and it turns out, there are many differences in the outros as for the intros, it's the same story as I analyzed the intros too!
Interesting there some changes I never seen in the VHS version for example shot of that fat controller is missing another shot of putting his top hat in his head

The Coal scene was so bad in a remastered version. How the heck did they not refilm so Henry stayed in the siding and Edward going as in the original VHS?
I have the DVD for season one (Ringo Starr) version, the 2004 remaster edition and it featured the same error that Henry left to soon and Edward didn't move until the next camera angle focus at Henry's place!
I grew up with Thomas and friends I used to watch it all the time and I kind of like it to this day

I’ve only just noticed there is another difference in Thomas & Gordon between the original and restored version. The first of Henry pulling off, Gordon is stationary in the original, but in the restored version, Gordon reverses slightly. I’m not sure if this is a different shot or an earlier portion of the same shot which was cut differently.

I Prefer Watching The Original Version Instead Of The Restored Version Of The Thomas & Friends Seasons 1-3 Episodes Because It Had Some Parts Missing That Disappoints Me Such As The Shot Of Percy Looking Sad Is Edited Out In The Season 2 Episode Percy And The Signal. It's Worse Than Those RHINO Home Video Transformers G1 Remastered DVDs!
Now here is the thing some or one of them are fast then the other and one is slow and i see different like the nameplate (i think how u say it) is gone but the other one does so cool
The remasters do suffer from a crushed blacks problem. Same thing happened to the 2004 dvd master of Star Wars and Rock & Rule (The ladder DVD being released in 2005) which was also the Blu-ray master.
The amount of goofs in the the supposed "restored" versions is truly embarrassing. I still remember seeing the restored version of Henry's Special Coal for the first time and being utterly confused when Henry backed down into the siding, only to immediately lunge forward. And then suddenly he teleports BACK into the siding, while Edward teleports OUT of the yard. (Like seriously how did nobody notice it?).
This was pretty good seeing the difference between original release and remastered. Any chance for the same sort of thing for seasons 4-7 (or whichever was the last season to have a VHS release)?
I have a feeling this is a comparison of the UK versions. Ringo Starr does narrate the US releases of the first season that were Thomas gets tricked and James learns a lesson, while George carlin I grew up with many of the rest including this. There was a time when I thought George carlin and Alec Baldwin were the primary narrators until the Michael Brandon era. Until a few years ago; I embraced every new episode as they were released until I got bored with the CGI episodes. The movies kept my attention, and I haven’t seen much since then.
No matter what, I will agree the original series from season one to season six was where it all started.
I have a question what was your reaction when they leaked the actual missing coach, and other photos from the episode.

Oh my gosh I haven’t notice that well I might of have a couple times but some of those senses were like completely different clips like for example the one were Bertie had A happy expression in unrestored one but a sad expression in The restored one but anyways nice video

The interesting thing is on the American version of this which was never released on DVD to my knowledge I can't find them sometimes the UK narration randomly appears in the US dub

Yes, they are. I'm not sure which but they are on DVD.
Yes. They were featured on the Series 1 to 5 DVDs released in the UK between 2005 and 2007.
They were often shown on the Anchor Bay DVDs

None I'm afraid
I never knew they rerecorded everything for better quality. Makes no sense. They could have just recaptured everything off of the higher quality versions for VHS.
In some behind the scenes images, apparently they used a film camera to record the show, so they could also just get the original films scanned in HD for even better quality.

I actually own the DVD releases of unrestored Series 1 and 2 and the DVD release of restored series 3.

I am confused, I thought you specifically said the nameplates being edited out wouldn't be i cluded, but thoes clips were still in the season 2 section?
I said they wouldn't be included in my allowances as it's post production

@@Matthew-oi6kz my allowances included transitions and goofs as that's not an alternate take, but because sped up shots and censoring out nameplates is put in afterwards, it is classed as an alternative if they use the unedited clips. Hence why its there.
@@starwindzone I think we are both confusing each other. You specifically said you would NOT be including edited shots, citing the one with the nameplate being censored in Break Van. However, from 8:36 to 8:44, those exact clips appear. That is why I am confused. Is there another difference between the clips, like the shots being so slightly different, that I didn't notice?
@@Matthew-oi6kz two other examples I can remember where editing was done to a clip afterwards are Season 3 with James on the turntable and Oliver crossing a bridge, same clips but the vhs ones were sped up
