7:39-7:40 did you know Jim Cummings did that trailer voice as well for Thomas and the Magic Railway first trailer it true Jim Cummings did and I saw the trailer from a VHS Thomas and Friends VHS tape from Spills & Chrills VHS when I was little and did you know Eric Idle the member of Monty Python team when he was from the Casper 1995 movie abd every Mighty python movies and I think Jim Cummings and Eric Idle are pretty good of the Thomas and the Magic Railroad first Trailer and they be pretty good voice actor of new characters of Thomas and Friends big world big Adventure series or specials or a first ever Thomas and Friends the Movie
You know what is sort of bitter sweet in all of this? Over the years, the actor who played PT Boomer realized that people WANTED to see his character in the film and his character sort f became like this cult-favorite despite only having ONE part in the final cut that had nothing to do with the overall story. But sadly by the time the leaks came out, he passed away. I'm glad to know that the guy lived long enough to know that there were fans of the movie who wanted to see him as well as how this ONE character he played just sort of blew up into a legend. By the time the movie came out originally I was out of the TTTE age range but as I was hearing more and more about what was going on with production I wound up being more interested in PT Boomer than the other human characters in the movie. He's a goofy bad buy but what Britt had in mind for the American side of things, it fit especially when think about what she was trying to do. She was more or less confirming the idea that Shining Time Station wasn't JUST an American placeholder but did in fact exist in the overarching Thomas Universe so, as you mentioned in the movie, Boom and Disel would represent 'evil' from both sides and them coming together would be a massive battle. It's kid's movie logic but it's so much fun. I think the movie would have been cheesy as hell but STILL a lot more enjoyable than what we got. The only problem is, again as you mentioned, is the lack of Thomas compared to the other characters. This could have been solved if Britt thought a bit smaller and made this a TV/BROADCAST special rather than a movie and wrote things in a way where it could have been viewed in PARTS but also stretched out a bit longer than 90s minuets. But as they say, who knows. Great review by the way. I love reviews of this movie that don't just trash the film, even though I know it's bad, but explain the ISSUES that happened behind the screen that lead to what we got.
Having watched the cut in full, I am very surprised at how little Boomer’s actually in it. For how much he’s been mystified over the past ten years, he really didn’t have much of a presence. Sure, characters talk about him a fair bit, but his role in the story is really just to be some guy who shows up every once in a while to act douchey and then leave. He only really _improves_ the movie by filling in a few holes in the story/dialogue that were created as a result of his removal. Honestly, I’m kind of thinking it’d be better overall if he had just been written out of the story in the scripting phase to begin with. It’s already bizarre to have two unaffiliated villains acting at the same time with the same goal, but it also just takes even _more_ screentime away from Thomas and co. I definitely don’t think Boomer was “too scary” for kids, I’m kind of baffled by that actually as I was way more terrified of D10 as a kid than I ever would’ve been of some old guy on a motorcycle. I can say for certain however that I would’ve been incredibly antsy as a kid having to wait even longer for Thomas to show up. As much as I hate to say it, the way the movie ultimately turned out might have been for the best. Sure, it may have hurt the overall storytelling quality, but I’d wager it actually improved the experience for the children who watched it. Because let’s face it, kids wanted to see Thomas. The greatest misstep in all of this was that the story wasn’t even about him to begin with.
It would’ve made more sense if PT boomer and diesel 10 had a history together like maybe Boomer was diesel 10’s driver during lady’s accident or he was the one who outfitted diesel 10 with his claw. Hell they could’ve tossed the original idea for boomer as well as most of the shining time shit and made him an inventor who came up with the idea of diesels to replace steam engines or he could’ve been a fill in for the fat controller while he was off on vacation and he could’ve run amuck of the railway by introducing diesel 10 any of those would’ve made a much more interesting narrative than what we got
I feel that there's a good chance you're right. It's part of why I have less and less of an idea who this movie was actually intended for as time goes on. It just feels like on the whole it was very poorly thought-out: -Why try to incorporate Shining Time into the plot at all? Why not simply have actors playing the inhabitants of Sodor? Shining Time Station had been off the air for years at that point, they only included three characters from that show to begin with and two of them got recast. -As you said, having two villains working independently towards the same goal, who aren't onscreen a lot but whose menace hangs over the entire thing, feels like something that'd fly well past the heads of the preschool market the franchise had been slotted into appealing almost entirely to. -As a result, Boomer feels too smart of a concept for the story: A petty bully still holding onto childhood grudges doing everything he can to make an old rival miserable even after both have become old men, doesn't really mesh with the aforementioned target demographic. And the plot going on around him just makes him seem ever-more absurd; Boomer's essentially willing to blow a big hole in the multiverse just to get even with one guy. It's such a ridiculously high-concept premise that has no real place in the franchise he's attached to. All that being said, there are other issues: The last-minute sweep of edits means now Diesel 10 is even more inexplicable of a villain; giving him Boomer's single-minded determination to destroy Lady raises a lot of questions, questions which I don't think the script could ever have hoped to answer. The whole idea of keeping the minimal-movement largely static miniatures of the TV show is an admirable but misguided attempt at keeping visual continuity. As I said above, where is everybody? I don't think even the early drafts had plans to address the absence of crews manning the engines, passengers traveling on the Sodor lines, or workmen who'd need the goods Thomas and his friends deliver. Apparently in earlier drafts of the script, Lady was merely the protector of the titular Magic Railroad, but that just begs the question of why that was changed? Did it just feel like the stakes were too low if Sodor was not also tied to her health? Apologies for rambling, but this movie does things to the brain, man.
George wasn't in the final cut because when they arranged all the models for filming they found out that someone forgot to bring George's model. Kind of a funny story if you think about it.

I do remember seeing footage of Boomer in trailers or somewhere, specifically when Diesel 10 goes off the bridge. Since there was never any context of who he was, I thought he was Diesel's driver.
7:50 Jim Cummings voiced the US version of the trailer. Also it's funny that the voice behind Mr. Waddlesworth in 102 Dalmatians narrated this trailer in the UK. THAT'S HILARIOUS TO ME
I feel a remake is in order for this film. Use models again and live action actors, but use your original script with P.T Boomer and make Lilly Narrate it. And what the test audiences said about desesil 10s voice thats bullshit. I showed the cut seen with p.t boomer to some little kids and they said it wasnt scary.
*The things I prefer about the original cut over the final cut:* 1. *The COMPLETED voice acting:* John Bellis and Michael Angelis are clearly the superior Thomas, James, and Percy, and this workprint really shows. Michael Angelis truly gave his all as James and Percy, and John Bellis straight up IS Thomas. Before anyone says "He sounds too old!", Thomas is older than just about everyone on the steam team, say for Edward (Who sadly never appeared in the film.), and he's the same age as Toby, so it makes sense for him to sound like that. 2. *Doug Lennox as PT Boomer:* While I think his character is one dimensional, PT Boomer, just like Alec Baldwin in both cuts of the movie, really commits to his character, and really seems to be chewing up the scenery, and I LOVE IT. It's a shame he was underutilized in the original version. 3. *Better context for several scenes:* Many scenes getting cut from the film meant we had several scenes occur without any context. For example, how is the wind strong enough to push Thomas off the edge of Muffle Mountain, and why does Lily have to stay with her grandfather? The original workprint actually gives proper context to these scenes, as PT Boomer was the one who caused Thomas to fall off of the mountain due to the force of the dynamite he set off, causing an earthquake, and Lily actually had to stay with her grandfather because her mother was pregnant and her father was busy with work, so she needed to stay with someone, and it happened to be her grandfather, Burnett Stone. 4. *Actual emotion in some scenes:* There was actual emotion and character in many of the missing scenes. Such as Burnett and Lily bonding, and some actual drama between the two, as well as a scene where Mr. Conducter tells Lily that he's worried about his cousin due to the fact that their life source is being wasted by the both of them, and it's taking a toll on the two of them, and they could die if they don't get more gold dust. It's a shame those scenes were unfortunately cut from the film. 5. *Lady's reveal later on in the film:* Lady being revealed later on makes so much more sense, as it works as a major twist in the film, with Burnett Stone having to keep her secret to prevent her from being harmed by his old enemy, PT Boomer, or anyone for that matter, showcasing Burnett Stone's PTSD and lack of trust for anyone else, once putting trust in someone whom he once considered a friend, only to be taken advantage of in the end. 6. *The slightly better version of the Shining Time song:* While it is still a very generic song, the woman singing it actually puts in a lot more effort than the guy singing it in the final cut. 7. *The inclusion of other Thomas and Friends songs:* This is more due to the fan edited cut of the Director's Cut I watched, but including "Night Train" and "The Island Song" in the film is great fan service, and shows a great deal of respect for the show. Though this is the Thomas fan in me kicking in, it's still nice to listen to familiar songs I've grown up with since watching the show on VHS tapes I rented from the Library with my father, and bought on DVD. *The problems with the original workprint:* 1. *PT Boomer barely does anything of note aside from being a one-note jerk:* The problem with PT Boomer's character is ironically the complete opposite of what the test audiences complained about. He's just not that scary, and doesn't really do much except for using dynamite, and being a one-note greedy jerk we've seen many times in Hollywood. The only thing saving him is Doug Lennox's performace. 2. *Two unrelated villains make it feel like I'm watching two movies at once:* The fact that there are two unrelated villains, PT Boomer and Diesel 10, makes it feel like I'm watching two movies. One movie about trains, and another about human, which makes the film way too bloated and complex, especially for a Thomas movie. 3. *The jam sniffing gag:* That was a scene that was rightly cut. Because while it does showcase the show's British origin, it just wasn't needed in the film. I'm glad they cut it out of the film. 4. *The summer sundae scene:* Again, much like the jam sniffing scene, it didn't need to be there, and it was rightly cut. And oddly enough, it was THIS deleted scene that made it to the DVD on not actual plot related scenes that would've made a difference. 5. *Thomas appears even less in the film:* Because most of the deleted scenes involve humans, Thomas and other talking trains barely appear in the original cut, making it feel even less like a Thomas movie, and because of it, it was doomed to fail at the box office from the start, as the lack of Thomas would make people want their money back, as said by C. Junior in his introduction. *Things I would improve in the workprint if I were directing it:* 1. *Why both Diesel 10 and PT Boomer were there causing trouble:* While there's at least some context for PT Boomer, Diesel 10 is given no explanation for why he's there, or why their both after the Lost Engine depsite having no relation to each other. Instead, I would simplify it by having PT Boomer being the guy who built Diesel 10 after he found a banished Diesel from Sodor (The one from Bowled Out.) and converting him into a killing machine nicknamed "Diesel 10", and have Diesel 10 briefly explain it in one single line to Splatter and Dodge. 2. *Have a scene of PT Boomer getting apprehended by the Sodor Police:* Boomer never truly gets his commupence. He's still alive by the end of the film, and he's just humiliated, in a scene where he was supposed to be killed off, but they made him live from some bizarre reason, which defies all logic entirely, in world full of unseen magic. In my version, PT Boomer does live, but he's taken into custody by the Sodor Police for destruction of property and illegally modifying a sentient piece of machinery. 3. *NO MORE FOURTH WALL BREAKS:* That fourth wall breaking scene at the windmill was stupid and should've been reshot to instead show Mr. Conductor shocked that he managed to land at the windmill after being clauched by Diesel 10's claw. Because that fourth wall break made even less sense with Lily being the narrator instead of Mr. Conductor himself. 4. *Fix the no driver situation:* Not only are there no drivers in both version, but they're inconsistent about it as well. Since the engines in Shining Time Village do have drivers and firemen, and Burnett Stone is shown to be Lily's driver, but the drivers and firemen are nowhere to be seen. What, did they need the characters in their cabs or something? They have coaches like Annie and Clarabelle! Just use them. And if money was an issue, just use the film's crew as extras portraying the drivers and firemen, that's how I'd do it. And also, hire extras to portray humans on Sodor so it doesn't feel too desolate. 5. *Why Edward is absent:* Just have Thomas explain that Edward was taking Sir Topham Hatt and his family on vacation to the mainland to explain his absence, and why Thomas needs to be in charge while Edward is gone. Because having Edward absent with no explanation is really stupid and confusing. *Overall:* The Extended Cut is better than the Theatrical Cut, but not by much. It still has the same problems as the final version, with some more added in due to the deleted scenes. But, there is more heart to the Extended Cut, and there is better context for what happened in the film which the Theatrical Cut sadly lacks. So, if you're going to watch the film in any form, watch the Extended Cut, because it is a better viewing expirience than the Theatrical Cut.
The live action segments were largely filmed on the Isle of Man and as I grew up there and was a childhood Thomas fan I had to watch this. I was gutted... It was so Americanised. The Isle of Man Steam Railway was even used as a filming location for Shining Time Station.
I didn’t realise that there were changes that were done to this film until fairly recently. This film is honestly a guilty pleasure of mine. I know it’s bad but I just watch it anyway because I’m weird like that. I wouldn’t call myself a hardcore Thomas fan but I used to love the series when I was a kid. Anyway, I am quite miffed that so much was cut. I honestly would’ve thought that the film would’ve been better if it wasn’t cut so much. I would’ve liked to have listened to all the original voices and see P.T Boomer. That way it would’ve made the film more fascinating. I don’t understand why there were test audiences in the UK because I feel like it would’ve been better received. All in all, I really hope that a director’s cut will be released because I would love to see the film being done differently with a lot less plot holes and more of a fascinating film for kids to watch.
Downloaded the whole workprint onto my Computer to keep it for private use. 26:06 Agreed. Especially with something highly sought after such as this (or the wicked witch episode from Sesame Street as a more recent example). 27:03 Can also relate to that. One such example I've observed personally was when the full studio demos of the unreleased Rammstein Songs "Jeder lacht" and "Schwarzes Glas", both originally recorded in 1994, were leaked online in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Prior to this, all that was available of these two to the genetal public were either edited versions that'd fade out early or some low Resolution live recordings concert attendees had made. So both leaks caused one hell of a stirr in the fandom, but didn't stirr jag shit outside of it.
I’m late to the party on this but I’ve been a fan of lost media for a long time and I have only just discovered this whole saga in the last few days, I was actually looking up for an unreleased musical film called “Temptation” but a blog post led me to this whole thing. Coming in at the point where lots of the media for this is already online, it’s really fascinating to see how everything evolved. I’m glad I came across this video as I had read so much about it, it’s nice to see someone put the behind the scenes storyline together. Nice work.
Diesel 10 destroying all the buffers he come across actually makes him a little more competent and a threatening .(especially if you’d hear that he’d destroyed most of them during the movie, knowing time is running out).
Great video! Loved your Missing Coach videos, and I'm glad you talked about MR. This movie's always had a special place in my heart. So when I learned there was a different version out there like 10 years ago, I was shocked. Seeing this rough cut was both informative, and weird. Some things are there, some aren't. Just weird to see a middle ground in this version of the movie. I hope the Blu-Ray release has SOMETHING related to the director's cut when it releases. Literally anything, even a screenshot of just Cranky's scene dumping fruit on Diesel 10 (If it was shot that is) would be amazing.
QUESTION Are you afraid of falling into a niche based on what does and doesn't get views? The TTTE content you've analyzed lately has garnered much more attention than the videos sandwiched in between like the Animal Crossing Anime review, even though you've put the same amount of effort into both. Does that bother you at all?
The whole problem with the movie was the fact that people were expecting Thomas to have amore prominent role in the movie, hence the title, but we barely saw Thomas so it was a failure, What they should have done is just called the movie "the magic railroad", kept the deleted scenes in, make the rating for the movie a tad higher,, and it would have been more successful since people would be less expecting the Thomas scenes.
How Thomas and the magic railroad could've gone: Thomas and Gordon have the argument they have at the beginning. At shining time, Mr conductor takes about helping out at Sodor, but he is a bit fearful about his supply almost being completely used up. Mr conductor then leaves for Sodor. Thomas then has his conversation with James and then leaves and collects Mr conductor. James is curious about the lost engine. It then cuts to Burnett Stone’s flash back of promising to his childhood friend/later wife that she could ride the engine with him one day. Edward comes to the shed, James asks if Edward knows about the lost engine that Thomas and Diesel 10 mentioned. Edward says that there once was an engine that was supposedly built and plated with gold from the goldmines of the Mid-Sodor Railway. He explains that the gold had some magical properties that allows for easy creation of gold dust which the Conductor family uses to travel from place to place using a supposed "Magic railway" that connects a bunch of places together like Shining time to Sodor. Edward also explains that Diesel 10 tried to destroy her and her builder, had her transported to and old quarry in the side of a mountain at Cregwir. Cregwir being a great place to hid her, since Diesel couldn't find her because there are no railway lines that connect to Cregwir. Edward also says that he had forgotten how to make the engine steam. Then Diesel, Splatter and Dodge have their dialog at D10 mountain. Thomas stops at Crovan’s Gate where he is meant to meet up with Mr. Conductor, but he is late. In the meantime, Thomas talks to Duke, Peter Sam and Sir Handel about Diesel 10 trying to find and destroy the engine. Duke then tells Thomas, that he knows about the supposed Gold with magical powers. He said it could reproduce gold dust and it was given to a young adult, called Burnett, after he saved a mans life by pulling him out of mine that was caving in. Duke then says that Burnett used the gold to decorate an engine that he built. He says that the engine ran on a line that connected Peel Godred, to Cregwir even though no map could prove its existence. Mr Conductor arrives and Thomas takes him to Kapford. Mr conductor tells Thomas that he is afraid that his supply of gold dust is running out and that he didn’t remember anything about where to find more. You then cut to Diesel Singing Old Mac’diesel and Burnett’s flashback of telling his girlfriend that he had to guard Lady well and then realising that he didn’t. He is also says quietly that he could not make Lady steam and that he tried different types of coal and none of them worked. The movie runs the way it did from Thomas James and Gordon’s conversation (but Duck overhears Henry and Toby’s conversation on his way to Arlesburg) to Thomas and Percy talking to Mr. conductor in the shed about him losing his gold dust. Percy overhears him talking about the buffers and then he has a dream about the windmill and his Dad telling him that if the gold dust ever ran out, he had to go there. He also says there could be serious consequences if the gold dust completely ran out. You then jump to Burnett sleeping and Lady’s whistle being heard. Next morning Mr. conductor tells James that he is going to the windmill. You then see Duck talking to Donald, Douglas, Rex, Burt and Mike about the lost engine and the small engines they tell him that sometimes if they are at Arlesdale, they can hear a mournful whistle at night coming from the direction towards Cregwir. Duck says it could be a lead, but the Scottish twins brush it off as nonsense. Mr conductor gets lost and loses his since of direction and then Seven Engines, Thomas to Toby are talking about the issue as in the movie and Thomas goes out to look for him. Mr Conductor then realises that he could call his cousin Jr. and that goes as well as it does in the movie. Mr conductor has his bad visions from the move and misses Thomas. Donald and Douglas take an evening train to the Peel Godred station of Welsh coal for the power plant up there. They then hear the mournful whistle, so they decide to head back to Knapford to tell the other engines. Thomas and Percy talk about the lost railway and Diesel overhears them. To make matters worse, Donald and Douglas talk about the mournful whistling they heard, and they all conclude that there must be a “magic” railway that connects to Cregwir. Toby tells them that Diesel 10 overheard everything. The next scenes happen the same way as the movie but Thomas gets some of the coal trucks of Welsh coal for Henry since his tubes got blocked up with sneezing powder and that only welsh coal could help him until he could get cleaned out in the evening. Thomas loses one at the buffers at the terminus at the Power stations and aluminium works of Peel Godred. Thomas gets Percy to guard buffers. Diesel 10 tries to kill Mr Conductor but end up flinging him to the windmill and then Thomas picks up Jr. and takes him to the windmill. Jr. tells Thomas that he and most of the current generation of conductors have almost ran out of gold dust. (Basically this part is the same as the movie without Lilly) After Jr. is highjacked by Diesel 10, Thomas and Mr. Conductor brainstorms and Percy sees Spatter and Dodge found the buffers. Thomas then decides to investigate with Mr conductor, and they find the buffers and the magic railway collect the coal truck and take it to the end of the magic line. They wake up Burnett in the process, and then Mr conductor remembers the line “Stoke up the magic in the mountain and the lady will smile. The magic being Special (Welsh) coal. Burnett stokes Lady up, makes plenty of steam and they head back down the line. Mr conductor collects some of the shavings in his hat because they look beautiful In the morning. Diesel tries to kill James and Jr. but Jr uses the last of his supply to transport him and James to the windmill. Thomas, Lady and Mr conductor eventually come back to the windmill and the Mr conductor tries to remember the next line of the gold dust. Diesel appears and the classic chase happens and then they reunite, and Mr conductor remembers the last line. They make the gold dust and they go home. The end.
Or better yet you could've done TATMR without STS and magic golddust. Like what if Muffle Mountain was located somewhere on the other railway, and this movie was instead more like a feature length version of "Escape"?
My favorite part of this whole video is the sketch that starts at 19:13. I’ve had a similar full-fledged story idea where this is the anti-climactic reveal!
All though this movie is bad I have to give credit to this film for making Sodor look so real, realer than it’s ever looked before. In the show, Sodor looks really charming but it’s clearly a model train set. Here Sodor looks more colorful, detailed, and kind of looks like a railway you’d see in real life.
Nice to see you make another Thomas video you are a great content creator and raise a good point about how it is not that big a deal t was leaked you covered a lot of good things about this film I think we will just have to wish for the best for the directors cut although an official realese would be interesting. One fact is, that if George was in the final cut, he was told to destroy all the buffers, so the engines would derail, and if he destroyed the magic buffers, his reward would be to turn the turntable at tidmouth sheds, into a roller rink.

When I first watched Thomas and the Magic Railroad many years ago I though that there would more characters like Edward, Duck, Donald Douglaus, Bill, Ben. Oliver and the rest of the characters but unfortunely that never happened, plus I was expect to see Gordon, Henry, James, Percy and Toby at the end of the movie with Thomas and Lady.
Did you knew that george the steam roller would have appeared in the film, cranky having a bigger role, b.t. boomer got banned, the timothy (fanmade demonical engine) face being used for thomas and edward being forgotten in the film? This video was very interesting. Its a huge shame i've missed the premier an hour ago. however i just watched it - boi - just boi - this was probbably the longest thomas documentry ive "EVER" should have seen in life. I really can imagine this video took way to much time to do. I guess you came out with a very useful content, extraly for youtube. I give this a 5/5. With how Eric Idle sounded towards the end of the trailer it was almost as if you could hear him saying away from the mic, “now where’s my bloody check!”
Honestly this movie could have been better with the right script and if Alcroft could have maintained creative control without interference. I adapted the director's cut to something that could have worked, of course there are elements of this version that could only happen in a perfect world. At first, the story jumps back and forth between the Sodor and Shining Time universes, both of which seem to be in a similar predicament. In Shining Time the simple rural town is in slow decline, the station is still open and only due to the traffic is the rest of the town surviving. Stacy Jones is still the Station Master, and FFS have Schemer there too, Brian O'Connor is still alive, they could have invited him back. Burnett Stone is not in this version but PT Boomer is, he is a shady developer looking to develop the land the tracks leading to he town are located, closing the line and effectively cutting off the town. He looks all clean cut and successful but is in hot water financially and so is determined to see his plans through (insert random evil developer scheme here) before his past exploits catch up with him. The characters of Lily and Patch are still in the movie though Lily is Stacy's Grand Niece in the story and she comes out to Shining Time due to troubles at home. She meets Patch, Billy Twofeathers, and Schemer. While out riding on horseback with Patch, Lily notices an old man out on the mountain. Patch tells her he's a hermit who's harmless but barely ever comes down from the mountain. At the station, Lily finds an old journal that belonged to her dad, Matt Jones, who passed away a couple years prior. It contained stories and illustrations (inspired by those in Rev Audrey's Railway Series books) about the island of Sodor. Meanwhile we see how things are on the island of Sodor, where the Railway has too fallen on hard times. Edward is seen on Thomas' Branch Line pulling Annie and Clarabel, the other engines are seen working the best they can but we see they are dealing with old tracks and worn down equipment. We meet Sir Charles Topham Hat (the son of the original Fat Controller) who is struggling to preserve his fathers Railway but is under pressure from BR that he was forced to merge with and they are bringing in diesels who treat the old steamers poorly. The one engine who's referenced yet never seen here is Thomas, implying that he either left or disappeared. Back in Shining Time, Lily asks Stacy about her dad's drawings and writings and about the Conductor he seems to mention often but notes that there's no conductor perminently assigned to the Station. Stacy tells her there used to be but he left just before things in Shining Time started going downhill. She seems to read to the end of her dad's journal, finding an old conductor's whistle between the last pages, but as if by magic when she looks again, the once blank pages appear to have been filled in with a map of the old tracks leading into the mountain, it mentions and old tunnel and Gold dust. She tells Patch about what she's found and they go off to the mountains to find the old tunnel, unaware that PT Boomer overheard them and he too heads up there. Boomer has with him an old contractor acquaintance who's really the only one who's willing to still work with him as he pretty much stiffed everyone else he's worked with. He's also brought along an old diesel engine equipped with a hydraulic Claw for the construction project already on the old tracks in the mountain. Lily and Patch again cross paths with the old hermit, while he seems nice he prefers to keep to himself and they continue on their own. They find PT Boomer is following them in his diesel and they try to lose him but wind up going into the tunnel and finding it's a dead end, Lily reads the last bit of the journal and notices the old whistle has a little trickle of sparkly dust coming out of it, she blows the whistle and suddenly she and Patch are sucked unto a rainbow colored portal that forms in the tunnel wall before Boomer's diesel closes in. They are then transported to the island of Sodor and Lily now realizes her dad had been coming here and the stories and drawings he made in the journal were real. They encounter Edward and he takes them to Sir Topham Hat II, shortly after they head off, Boomer and his diesel suddenly come through the portal, Boomer discovers his diesel now has a face and speaks with a personality not unlike his own. Lily and Patch meet Topham Hat II and he tells them the whistle belonged to Mr Conductor, a trusted friend of his father and of Thomas. We then see flashbacks showing Thomas and Sodor in its heyday, but then one night Thomas and Mr. Conductor vanished and with them both the magic of Sodor too seemed to start fading. Meanwhile, Boomer and his Diesel meet the other diesels and they seem to have a lot in common, ambitious but in need of someone with vision to help them lay claim to Sodor once and for all. So Boomer makes a deal with them that if they help him catch Lily and Patch (knowing they have the whistle that opened the portal) he and his diesel will help them take over Sodor. We get hijinks and a chase sequence as Lily and Patch use Edward to flee from Boomer's Diesel and the other engines work together to outfox the other diesels. Lily and Patch hide in a coal wagon while Boomer's Diesel chases after Edward but get bumped and roll down hill, out of control they find themselves barreling towards the bumpers they came from and Lily uses the last of the Whistle's magic to reopen the portal and the coal wagon emerges into the real world on the old tracks and they continue to roll though the old mountain line. When it looks like they're going to hit a tight bend along a cliffs edge, the old hermit appears again and throws the switch so they run into a siding covered in loose sand and the coal wagon slides to the stop. They follow the Hermit to another old tunnel and finally we discover that this old hermit is none other than Ringo Starr (yes I know it's unlikely they'd get him to come back and do it but hey this is my fantasy) Mr. Conductor himself, further more in the tunnel they find an old dusty blue tank engine. He tells them that years ago he and Thomas became trapped here when his fire went out and so the magic (golden dust) ran out and they couldn't get back. Stacy and Billy, who went looking for Lily and Patch, soon arrive and everyone's brought up to speed. Boomer is running rampant in Sodor and when he's done with that he'll be back to do the same to Shining Time. Mr Conductor reminds them that They can't go back to Sodor without Thomas and they can't get his fire going. Lily and Patch remember that they came in a coal wagon from Sodor meaning there's coal from there and maybe that will work. Lily, Patch, and Mr. Conductor work to light Thomas' fire while Stacy and Billy return to the Station and with Schemer's help, stall Boomers contractor before they can start tearing up the tracks (they're on the land he plans to develop and would cut off Shining Time). Thomas' fire manages to light, and the old engine steams back to life. Lily, Patch, and Mr. Conductor take Thomas into the old tunnel, with golden dust billowing from Thomas, Mr. Conductor blows his whistle and they travel through the portal back to Sodor. Thomas is restored and regains his face and voice, almost immediately the golden dust begins to effect the land around them, the overgrown tracks, the dilapidated buildings, everything seem to become restored like new. Everywhere Thomas goes the other engines manage to get the upper hand over the diesels, ultimate one by one the diesels end up in Knapford Harbor and in a spectacular crash all get piled up onto a barge on its way out to sea, leaving only Boomer and his Diesel. We then get the chase sequence and diesel goes off a bridge while Boomer survives and Mr. Conductor uses his magic to send him out of Sodor. We cut back to Shining Time and before Boomer can figure out what the heck just happened, he gets busted as the investors and employees he's swindled and stiffed have caught up with him and the project to develop the land falls through. While the day is saved, there is the question of how the town could recover and suddenly Thomas pulls into the Station with Lily, Patch, and Mr Conductor, the arrival of the little Blue engine seems to brighten things up. Mr Conductor then reveals Thomas is covered in gold dust the town can use to rebuild and recover, we then see the town thriving again with not only regular train traffic at the station but special excursion trains into the mountains, all seemed to be pulled by a different engine every week bring a boom in tourism (the sodor engines start coming to Shining Time) with Patch driving them and plenty of coal from the Sodor wagon to keep them running so none of them will get stuck again. We then jump ahead to Lily now an adult and the Station Master, she and Patch (who's and engineer) are married and have two children. It's the end of the day and she's closing up the station so they've come to pick her up, as the two kids wait, Mr. Conductor appears to them and so we come full circle as he mentions a story about Thomas and when they ask about it, he looks to see Lily and Patch smile and nod with approval in the back and he blows his whistle, cut to end credits showing Sodor footage with all the engines and everything looking amazing.. God this took me forever to write but I wanted to share what I think would have made for a better movie than what we got. Thomas was a major part of my childhood and even now as an adult I think he deserved better for a big screen debut. Would love to hear some feedback on this concept.
It was Allcroft's creative control that got this movie into the sorry state it's in in the first place. There had already been tension in her company's relationship with the Reverend Awdry, since the show had been playing faster and looser with how railways are run in season 3, and he was dead by the time she started this filmic venture, so there was no longer the one voice that could veto an idea like this. Thus, the whole world goes off the rails, so to speak. Suddenly there's magic, and dimension-hopping steam engines, and vehicles can move by themselves and do rail work for nobody in sight, and a warship diesel with a not-even-close-to-regulation crane.

I'm sorry, but Britt Allcroft has every right to be upset about the workprint being leaked, since she did create the film. Also, I know you're saying you won't upload the whole workprint, but I still wouldn't use bits of it for my videos. And you do make an excellent point about teaching in school about special effects.

David Mitten wanted The Star Tugs, Zed Stacks, and possibly Izzy Gomez from TUGS were ment to appear in Thomas and the Magic Railroad, but Britt Alcroft still didn't like TUGS, so David Mitten's plan was canceled. Some props were shipped to Canada for filming, and smany were destroyed during transport, including Big Mickey.
Ah, good old Tom Kane narrating the Japanese trailer! For those unaware, Tom Kane was the voice of Yoda in various Star Wars animated media prior to his retirement in 2022.
I feel as though the movie needs a remaster, but not in the style thomas and friends is in now. Hopefully one day the old models with be repaired and we can get some old but new characters to voice act and play as those characters from 20 years ago I personally have some ideas as to what the remaster will be like
S6-7 are also in the classic series. Britt was actually still around, just as a minor executive and then script consultant, S6 and 7 are classic if Britt, David, Mike and Jr are still around - check, the episodes are 4 and a half minutes long - check, Terence, Duck, Donald, Douglas, Bill, Ben, Oliver, Toad, Stepney and the narrow gauge engines are still around - check, the stories are mostly realistic - check, no learning segments - check, doesn’t do the 3 strike formula - check. Angelis has lots of energy (in S6) - check and has the original theme song - check. All boxes ticked. Unless he didn’t grow up with S6 and 7.
I was 18 in 2000, but nostalgia value got better of me for this.... if Wilbert Awdry was not a fan of Henry’s forest, i dread to think what he would have thought about this. Being from the U.K. I knew of the USA version of the series, but never really saw it.... if I had been more clued up on that then maybe I would have enjoyed this slightly more, but just felt like sacrilegious to me
His head would probably have exploded had he lived to see this movie. This was a guy who had two illustrators dismissed and constantly disparaged a third because none of them felt like trying to meet the standards Awdry was holding them to.
There was a UA-cam channel named "Rainbow Sun Productions" who got a copy of the original script for the movie and they preformed it not with model trains but they acted it out, it was then deleted off their UA-cam channel

im one of the rare few in the fanbase who honestly blames the loss of Britt Allcroft for the downfall of the TV show in recent years... also the fact they used US test audiences instead of UK ones sealed its fate... also tbf i think the whole shining time aspect just muddies the water too much for us in the UK
And I will admit the replacement voices for Diesel 10, Thomas, Tobey, Henry, And Gordon were a little better than their original voices. But for Percy and James, they really should’ve stuck with Michael Angelis.

The "final" draft of the script does sound like a much better film than what was released in cinemas. Still, I feel a cinematic, high-budget reshoot of many of the early stories would have been great, especially with a passionate writer to turn them into a continuous 90 minute narrative.
Is the directors cut 20th anniversary film of Thomas and the magic railroad a real movie now? Or is it just a click bait thing to get people to buy it and it’s more lately being fan made? I’m just curious that all.
People need to stop hating Britt and uploading the cut illegally and going against her wishes. This film isn't bad, but it isn't good. At least it's not as bad as Calling All Engines or Misty Island Resuce. Also, Percy and James were supposed to be in the final scene with the recovered gold dust, but was cut, as well as Percy taking Junoir to the viaduct to help make Boomer and Diesel 10 vanish into boiler sludge.
26:11 I will forever stand being the original Sonic design being changed being a bad thing. We also never got a good look at the ORIGINAL original design, as the one featured in the first trailer was already a revision. Both old designs were better than making a mockery of the game's modern Sonic design for the final movie. L3aks can b3 g00d, like us getting beta versions of video games, but in this case it wasn't. Remember: just because the majority believes something, doesn't mean it is correct!
I’ve seen the work print of the original script, asides from being an unfinished form of the film, it wasn’t too bad. I felt the human interactions were a lot more genuine and the weaker sounding conductor duo was just better acting overall. I like the redubbed voices for the engines though in the released form of the film. PT Boomer is straight up an old era Disney short antagonist though and that is great.

You know what is sort of bitter sweet in all of this?
Over the years, the actor who played PT Boomer realized that people WANTED to see his character in the film and his character sort f became like this cult-favorite despite only having ONE part in the final cut that had nothing to do with the overall story. But sadly by the time the leaks came out, he passed away. I'm glad to know that the guy lived long enough to know that there were fans of the movie who wanted to see him as well as how this ONE character he played just sort of blew up into a legend.
By the time the movie came out originally I was out of the TTTE age range but as I was hearing more and more about what was going on with production I wound up being more interested in PT Boomer than the other human characters in the movie. He's a goofy bad buy but what Britt had in mind for the American side of things, it fit especially when think about what she was trying to do. She was more or less confirming the idea that Shining Time Station wasn't JUST an American placeholder but did in fact exist in the overarching Thomas Universe so, as you mentioned in the movie, Boom and Disel would represent 'evil' from both sides and them coming together would be a massive battle. It's kid's movie logic but it's so much fun. I think the movie would have been cheesy as hell but STILL a lot more enjoyable than what we got.
The only problem is, again as you mentioned, is the lack of Thomas compared to the other characters. This could have been solved if Britt thought a bit smaller and made this a TV/BROADCAST special rather than a movie and wrote things in a way where it could have been viewed in PARTS but also stretched out a bit longer than 90s minuets. But as they say, who knows.
Great review by the way. I love reviews of this movie that don't just trash the film, even though I know it's bad, but explain the ISSUES that happened behind the screen that lead to what we got.

Having watched the cut in full, I am very surprised at how little Boomer’s actually in it. For how much he’s been mystified over the past ten years, he really didn’t have much of a presence. Sure, characters talk about him a fair bit, but his role in the story is really just to be some guy who shows up every once in a while to act douchey and then leave. He only really _improves_ the movie by filling in a few holes in the story/dialogue that were created as a result of his removal.
Honestly, I’m kind of thinking it’d be better overall if he had just been written out of the story in the scripting phase to begin with. It’s already bizarre to have two unaffiliated villains acting at the same time with the same goal, but it also just takes even _more_ screentime away from Thomas and co.
I definitely don’t think Boomer was “too scary” for kids, I’m kind of baffled by that actually as I was way more terrified of D10 as a kid than I ever would’ve been of some old guy on a motorcycle. I can say for certain however that I would’ve been incredibly antsy as a kid having to wait even longer for Thomas to show up. As much as I hate to say it, the way the movie ultimately turned out might have been for the best. Sure, it may have hurt the overall storytelling quality, but I’d wager it actually improved the experience for the children who watched it. Because let’s face it, kids wanted to see Thomas. The greatest misstep in all of this was that the story wasn’t even about him to begin with.
It would’ve made more sense if PT boomer and diesel 10 had a history together like maybe Boomer was diesel 10’s driver during lady’s accident or he was the one who outfitted diesel 10 with his claw. Hell they could’ve tossed the original idea for boomer as well as most of the shining time shit and made him an inventor who came up with the idea of diesels to replace steam engines or he could’ve been a fill in for the fat controller while he was off on vacation and he could’ve run amuck of the railway by introducing diesel 10 any of those would’ve made a much more interesting narrative than what we got
I feel that there's a good chance you're right. It's part of why I have less and less of an idea who this movie was actually intended for as time goes on. It just feels like on the whole it was very poorly thought-out:
-Why try to incorporate Shining Time into the plot at all? Why not simply have actors playing the inhabitants of Sodor? Shining Time Station had been off the air for years at that point, they only included three characters from that show to begin with and two of them got recast.
-As you said, having two villains working independently towards the same goal, who aren't onscreen a lot but whose menace hangs over the entire thing, feels like something that'd fly well past the heads of the preschool market the franchise had been slotted into appealing almost entirely to.
-As a result, Boomer feels too smart of a concept for the story: A petty bully still holding onto childhood grudges doing everything he can to make an old rival miserable even after both have become old men, doesn't really mesh with the aforementioned target demographic. And the plot going on around him just makes him seem ever-more absurd; Boomer's essentially willing to blow a big hole in the multiverse just to get even with one guy. It's such a ridiculously high-concept premise that has no real place in the franchise he's attached to.
All that being said, there are other issues:
The last-minute sweep of edits means now Diesel 10 is even more inexplicable of a villain; giving him Boomer's single-minded determination to destroy Lady raises a lot of questions, questions which I don't think the script could ever have hoped to answer.
The whole idea of keeping the minimal-movement largely static miniatures of the TV show is an admirable but misguided attempt at keeping visual continuity.
As I said above, where is everybody? I don't think even the early drafts had plans to address the absence of crews manning the engines, passengers traveling on the Sodor lines, or workmen who'd need the goods Thomas and his friends deliver.
Apparently in earlier drafts of the script, Lady was merely the protector of the titular Magic Railroad, but that just begs the question of why that was changed? Did it just feel like the stakes were too low if Sodor was not also tied to her health?
Apologies for rambling, but this movie does things to the brain, man.

I feel a remake is in order for this film. Use models again and live action actors, but use your original script with P.T Boomer and make Lilly Narrate it.
And what the test audiences said about desesil 10s voice thats bullshit. I showed the cut seen with p.t boomer to some little kids and they said it wasnt scary.
*The things I prefer about the original cut over the final cut:*
1. *The COMPLETED voice acting:* John Bellis and Michael Angelis are clearly the superior Thomas, James, and Percy, and this workprint really shows. Michael Angelis truly gave his all as James and Percy, and John Bellis straight up IS Thomas. Before anyone says "He sounds too old!", Thomas is older than just about everyone on the steam team, say for Edward (Who sadly never appeared in the film.), and he's the same age as Toby, so it makes sense for him to sound like that.
2. *Doug Lennox as PT Boomer:* While I think his character is one dimensional, PT Boomer, just like Alec Baldwin in both cuts of the movie, really commits to his character, and really seems to be chewing up the scenery, and I LOVE IT. It's a shame he was underutilized in the original version.
3. *Better context for several scenes:* Many scenes getting cut from the film meant we had several scenes occur without any context. For example, how is the wind strong enough to push Thomas off the edge of Muffle Mountain, and why does Lily have to stay with her grandfather? The original workprint actually gives proper context to these scenes, as PT Boomer was the one who caused Thomas to fall off of the mountain due to the force of the dynamite he set off, causing an earthquake, and Lily actually had to stay with her grandfather because her mother was pregnant and her father was busy with work, so she needed to stay with someone, and it happened to be her grandfather, Burnett Stone.
4. *Actual emotion in some scenes:* There was actual emotion and character in many of the missing scenes. Such as Burnett and Lily bonding, and some actual drama between the two, as well as a scene where Mr. Conducter tells Lily that he's worried about his cousin due to the fact that their life source is being wasted by the both of them, and it's taking a toll on the two of them, and they could die if they don't get more gold dust. It's a shame those scenes were unfortunately cut from the film.
5. *Lady's reveal later on in the film:* Lady being revealed later on makes so much more sense, as it works as a major twist in the film, with Burnett Stone having to keep her secret to prevent her from being harmed by his old enemy, PT Boomer, or anyone for that matter, showcasing Burnett Stone's PTSD and lack of trust for anyone else, once putting trust in someone whom he once considered a friend, only to be taken advantage of in the end.
6. *The slightly better version of the Shining Time song:* While it is still a very generic song, the woman singing it actually puts in a lot more effort than the guy singing it in the final cut.
7. *The inclusion of other Thomas and Friends songs:* This is more due to the fan edited cut of the Director's Cut I watched, but including "Night Train" and "The Island Song" in the film is great fan service, and shows a great deal of respect for the show. Though this is the Thomas fan in me kicking in, it's still nice to listen to familiar songs I've grown up with since watching the show on VHS tapes I rented from the Library with my father, and bought on DVD.
*The problems with the original workprint:*
1. *PT Boomer barely does anything of note aside from being a one-note jerk:* The problem with PT Boomer's character is ironically the complete opposite of what the test audiences complained about. He's just not that scary, and doesn't really do much except for using dynamite, and being a one-note greedy jerk we've seen many times in Hollywood. The only thing saving him is Doug Lennox's performace.
2. *Two unrelated villains make it feel like I'm watching two movies at once:* The fact that there are two unrelated villains, PT Boomer and Diesel 10, makes it feel like I'm watching two movies. One movie about trains, and another about human, which makes the film way too bloated and complex, especially for a Thomas movie.
3. *The jam sniffing gag:* That was a scene that was rightly cut. Because while it does showcase the show's British origin, it just wasn't needed in the film. I'm glad they cut it out of the film.
4. *The summer sundae scene:* Again, much like the jam sniffing scene, it didn't need to be there, and it was rightly cut. And oddly enough, it was THIS deleted scene that made it to the DVD on not actual plot related scenes that would've made a difference.
5. *Thomas appears even less in the film:* Because most of the deleted scenes involve humans, Thomas and other talking trains barely appear in the original cut, making it feel even less like a Thomas movie, and because of it, it was doomed to fail at the box office from the start, as the lack of Thomas would make people want their money back, as said by C. Junior in his introduction.
*Things I would improve in the workprint if I were directing it:*
1. *Why both Diesel 10 and PT Boomer were there causing trouble:* While there's at least some context for PT Boomer, Diesel 10 is given no explanation for why he's there, or why their both after the Lost Engine depsite having no relation to each other. Instead, I would simplify it by having PT Boomer being the guy who built Diesel 10 after he found a banished Diesel from Sodor (The one from Bowled Out.) and converting him into a killing machine nicknamed "Diesel 10", and have Diesel 10 briefly explain it in one single line to Splatter and Dodge.
2. *Have a scene of PT Boomer getting apprehended by the Sodor Police:* Boomer never truly gets his commupence. He's still alive by the end of the film, and he's just humiliated, in a scene where he was supposed to be killed off, but they made him live from some bizarre reason, which defies all logic entirely, in world full of unseen magic. In my version, PT Boomer does live, but he's taken into custody by the Sodor Police for destruction of property and illegally modifying a sentient piece of machinery.
3. *NO MORE FOURTH WALL BREAKS:* That fourth wall breaking scene at the windmill was stupid and should've been reshot to instead show Mr. Conductor shocked that he managed to land at the windmill after being clauched by Diesel 10's claw. Because that fourth wall break made even less sense with Lily being the narrator instead of Mr. Conductor himself.
4. *Fix the no driver situation:* Not only are there no drivers in both version, but they're inconsistent about it as well. Since the engines in Shining Time Village do have drivers and firemen, and Burnett Stone is shown to be Lily's driver, but the drivers and firemen are nowhere to be seen. What, did they need the characters in their cabs or something? They have coaches like Annie and Clarabelle! Just use them. And if money was an issue, just use the film's crew as extras portraying the drivers and firemen, that's how I'd do it. And also, hire extras to portray humans on Sodor so it doesn't feel too desolate.
5. *Why Edward is absent:* Just have Thomas explain that Edward was taking Sir Topham Hatt and his family on vacation to the mainland to explain his absence, and why Thomas needs to be in charge while Edward is gone. Because having Edward absent with no explanation is really stupid and confusing.
*Overall:*
The Extended Cut is better than the Theatrical Cut, but not by much. It still has the same problems as the final version, with some more added in due to the deleted scenes. But, there is more heart to the Extended Cut, and there is better context for what happened in the film which the Theatrical Cut sadly lacks. So, if you're going to watch the film in any form, watch the Extended Cut, because it is a better viewing expirience than the Theatrical Cut.
The live action segments were largely filmed on the Isle of Man and as I grew up there and was a childhood Thomas fan I had to watch this. I was gutted... It was so Americanised. The Isle of Man Steam Railway was even used as a filming location for Shining Time Station.
Strasbourg Pennsylvania was also used
I didn’t realise that there were changes that were done to this film until fairly recently. This film is honestly a guilty pleasure of mine. I know it’s bad but I just watch it anyway because I’m weird like that. I wouldn’t call myself a hardcore Thomas fan but I used to love the series when I was a kid.
Anyway, I am quite miffed that so much was cut. I honestly would’ve thought that the film would’ve been better if it wasn’t cut so much. I would’ve liked to have listened to all the original voices and see P.T Boomer. That way it would’ve made the film more fascinating. I don’t understand why there were test audiences in the UK because I feel like it would’ve been better received. All in all, I really hope that a director’s cut will be released because I would love to see the film being done differently with a lot less plot holes and more of a fascinating film for kids to watch.

One such example I've observed personally was when the full studio demos of the unreleased Rammstein Songs "Jeder lacht" and "Schwarzes Glas", both originally recorded in 1994, were leaked online in 2019 and 2020 respectively. Prior to this, all that was available of these two to the genetal public were either edited versions that'd fade out early or some low Resolution live recordings concert attendees had made. So both leaks caused one hell of a stirr in the fandom, but didn't stirr jag shit outside of it.

I’m late to the party on this but I’ve been a fan of lost media for a long time and I have only just discovered this whole saga in the last few days, I was actually looking up for an unreleased musical film called “Temptation” but a blog post led me to this whole thing. Coming in at the point where lots of the media for this is already online, it’s really fascinating to see how everything evolved. I’m glad I came across this video as I had read so much about it, it’s nice to see someone put the behind the scenes storyline together. Nice work.
Diesel 10 destroying all the buffers he come across actually makes him a little more competent and a threatening .(especially if you’d hear that he’d destroyed most of them during the movie, knowing time is running out).

Great video! Loved your Missing Coach videos, and I'm glad you talked about MR. This movie's always had a special place in my heart. So when I learned there was a different version out there like 10 years ago, I was shocked. Seeing this rough cut was both informative, and weird. Some things are there, some aren't. Just weird to see a middle ground in this version of the movie.
I hope the Blu-Ray release has SOMETHING related to the director's cut when it releases. Literally anything, even a screenshot of just Cranky's scene dumping fruit on Diesel 10 (If it was shot that is) would be amazing.

Are you afraid of falling into a niche based on what does and doesn't get views? The TTTE content you've analyzed lately has garnered much more attention than the videos sandwiched in between like the Animal Crossing Anime review, even though you've put the same amount of effort into both. Does that bother you at all?
The whole problem with the movie was the fact that people were expecting Thomas to have amore prominent role in the movie, hence the title, but we barely saw Thomas so it was a failure, What they should have done is just called the movie "the magic railroad", kept the deleted scenes in, make the rating for the movie a tad higher,, and it would have been more successful since people would be less expecting the Thomas scenes.

How Thomas and the magic railroad could've gone:
Thomas and Gordon have the argument they have at the beginning.
At shining time, Mr conductor takes about helping out at Sodor, but he is a bit
fearful about his supply almost being completely used up. Mr conductor then
leaves for Sodor.
Thomas then has his conversation with James and then leaves and collects Mr conductor.
James is curious about the lost engine.
It then cuts to Burnett Stone’s flash back of promising to his childhood friend/later
wife that she could ride the engine with him one day.
Edward comes to the shed, James asks if Edward knows about the lost engine that Thomas
and Diesel 10 mentioned.
Edward says that there once was an engine that was supposedly built and plated with
gold from the goldmines of the Mid-Sodor Railway. He explains that the gold had
some magical properties that allows for easy creation of gold dust which the
Conductor family uses to travel from place to place using a supposed
"Magic railway" that connects a bunch of places together like Shining
time to Sodor. Edward also explains that Diesel 10 tried to destroy her and her
builder, had her transported to and old quarry in the side of a mountain at Cregwir.
Cregwir being a great place to hid her, since Diesel couldn't find her because
there are no railway lines that connect to Cregwir. Edward also says that he
had forgotten how to make the engine steam.
Then Diesel, Splatter and Dodge have their dialog at D10 mountain.
Thomas stops at Crovan’s Gate where he is meant to meet up with Mr. Conductor, but he
is late. In the meantime, Thomas talks to Duke, Peter Sam and Sir Handel about
Diesel 10 trying to find and destroy the engine. Duke then tells Thomas, that
he knows about the supposed Gold with magical powers. He said it could
reproduce gold dust and it was given to a young adult, called Burnett, after he
saved a mans life by pulling him out of mine that was caving in. Duke then says
that Burnett used the gold to decorate an engine that he built. He says that the
engine ran on a line that connected Peel Godred, to Cregwir even though no map
could prove its existence.
Mr Conductor arrives and Thomas takes him to Kapford. Mr conductor tells Thomas
that he is afraid that his supply of gold dust is running out and that he
didn’t remember anything about where to find more.
You then cut to Diesel Singing Old Mac’diesel and Burnett’s flashback of telling his
girlfriend that he had to guard Lady well and then realising that he didn’t. He
is also says quietly that he could not make Lady steam and that he tried different
types of coal and none of them worked.
The movie runs the way it did from Thomas James and Gordon’s conversation (but Duck
overhears Henry and Toby’s conversation on his way to Arlesburg) to Thomas and
Percy talking to Mr. conductor in the shed about him losing his gold dust.
Percy overhears him talking about the buffers and then he has a dream about the
windmill and his Dad telling him that if the gold dust ever ran out, he had to
go there. He also says there could be serious consequences if the gold dust
completely ran out. You then jump to Burnett sleeping and Lady’s whistle being
heard.
Next morning Mr. conductor tells James that he is going to the windmill.
You then see Duck talking to Donald, Douglas, Rex, Burt and Mike about the lost engine
and the small engines they tell him that sometimes if they are at Arlesdale,
they can hear a mournful whistle at night coming from the direction towards
Cregwir. Duck says it could be a lead, but the Scottish twins brush it off as nonsense.
Mr conductor gets lost and loses his since of direction and then Seven Engines,
Thomas to Toby are talking about the issue as in the movie and Thomas goes out
to look for him. Mr Conductor then realises that he could call his cousin Jr.
and that goes as well as it does in the movie. Mr conductor has his bad visions
from the move and misses Thomas.
Donald and Douglas take an evening train to the Peel Godred station of Welsh coal for
the power plant up there. They then hear the mournful whistle, so they decide
to head back to Knapford to tell the other engines.
Thomas and Percy talk about the lost railway and Diesel overhears them. To make
matters worse, Donald and Douglas talk about the mournful whistling they heard,
and they all conclude that there must be a “magic” railway that connects to
Cregwir.
Toby tells them that Diesel 10 overheard everything.
The next scenes happen the same way as the movie but Thomas gets some of the coal trucks
of Welsh coal for Henry since his tubes got blocked up with sneezing powder and
that only welsh coal could help him until he could get cleaned out in the
evening. Thomas loses one at the buffers at the terminus at the Power stations
and aluminium works of Peel Godred. Thomas gets Percy to guard buffers.
Diesel 10 tries to kill Mr Conductor but end up flinging him to the windmill and then
Thomas picks up Jr. and takes him to the windmill. Jr. tells Thomas that he and
most of the current generation of conductors have almost ran out of gold dust.
(Basically this part is the same as the movie without Lilly)
After Jr. is highjacked by Diesel 10, Thomas and Mr. Conductor brainstorms and Percy sees
Spatter and Dodge found the buffers. Thomas then decides to investigate with Mr
conductor, and they find the buffers and the magic railway collect the coal
truck and take it to the end of the magic line.
They wake up Burnett in the process, and then Mr conductor remembers the line “Stoke up
the magic in the mountain and the lady will smile. The magic being Special
(Welsh) coal. Burnett stokes Lady up, makes plenty of steam and they head back
down the line.
Mr conductor collects some of the shavings in his hat because they look beautiful
In the morning. Diesel tries to kill James and Jr. but Jr uses the last of his supply
to transport him and James to the windmill. Thomas, Lady and Mr conductor
eventually come back to the windmill and the Mr conductor tries to remember the
next line of the gold dust.
Diesel appears and the classic chase happens and then they reunite, and Mr conductor
remembers the last line. They make the gold dust and they go home.
The end.
I like the official version of the movie but this is a great version.

My favorite part of this whole video is the sketch that starts at 19:13. I’ve had a similar full-fledged story idea where this is the anti-climactic reveal!
All though this movie is bad I have to give credit to this film for making Sodor look so real, realer than it’s ever looked before. In the show, Sodor looks really charming but it’s clearly a model train set. Here Sodor looks more colorful, detailed, and kind of looks like a railway you’d see in real life.

When I first watched Thomas and the Magic Railroad many years ago I though that there would more characters like Edward, Duck, Donald Douglaus, Bill, Ben. Oliver and the rest of the characters but unfortunely that never happened, plus I was expect to see Gordon, Henry, James, Percy and Toby at the end of the movie with Thomas and Lady.
This is why I don't want that train at my local amusement park

Its a huge shame i've missed the premier an hour ago. however i just watched it - boi - just boi - this was probbably the longest thomas documentry ive "EVER" should have seen in life. With how Eric Idle sounded towards the end of the trailer it was almost as if you could hear him saying away from the mic, “now where’s my bloody check!”

Honestly this movie could have been better with the right script and if Alcroft could have maintained creative control without interference. I adapted the director's cut to something that could have worked, of course there are elements of this version that could only happen in a perfect world.
At first, the story jumps back and forth between the Sodor and Shining Time universes, both of which seem to be in a similar predicament. In Shining Time the simple rural town is in slow decline, the station is still open and only due to the traffic is the rest of the town surviving. Stacy Jones is still the Station Master, and FFS have Schemer there too, Brian O'Connor is still alive, they could have invited him back. Burnett Stone is not in this version but PT Boomer is, he is a shady developer looking to develop the land the tracks leading to he town are located, closing the line and effectively cutting off the town. He looks all clean cut and successful but is in hot water financially and so is determined to see his plans through (insert random evil developer scheme here) before his past exploits catch up with him.
The characters of Lily and Patch are still in the movie though Lily is Stacy's Grand Niece in the story and she comes out to Shining Time due to troubles at home. She meets Patch, Billy Twofeathers, and Schemer. While out riding on horseback with Patch, Lily notices an old man out on the mountain. Patch tells her he's a hermit who's harmless but barely ever comes down from the mountain. At the station, Lily finds an old journal that belonged to her dad, Matt Jones, who passed away a couple years prior. It contained stories and illustrations (inspired by those in Rev Audrey's Railway Series books) about the island of Sodor.
Meanwhile we see how things are on the island of Sodor, where the Railway has too fallen on hard times. Edward is seen on Thomas' Branch Line pulling Annie and Clarabel, the other engines are seen working the best they can but we see they are dealing with old tracks and worn down equipment. We meet Sir Charles Topham Hat (the son of the original Fat Controller) who is struggling to preserve his fathers Railway but is under pressure from BR that he was forced to merge with and they are bringing in diesels who treat the old steamers poorly. The one engine who's referenced yet never seen here is Thomas, implying that he either left or disappeared.
Back in Shining Time, Lily asks Stacy about her dad's drawings and writings and about the Conductor he seems to mention often but notes that there's no conductor perminently assigned to the Station. Stacy tells her there used to be but he left just before things in Shining Time started going downhill. She seems to read to the end of her dad's journal, finding an old conductor's whistle between the last pages, but as if by magic when she looks again, the once blank pages appear to have been filled in with a map of the old tracks leading into the mountain, it mentions and old tunnel and Gold dust.
She tells Patch about what she's found and they go off to the mountains to find the old tunnel, unaware that PT Boomer overheard them and he too heads up there. Boomer has with him an old contractor acquaintance who's really the only one who's willing to still work with him as he pretty much stiffed everyone else he's worked with. He's also brought along an old diesel engine equipped with a hydraulic Claw for the construction project already on the old tracks in the mountain.
Lily and Patch again cross paths with the old hermit, while he seems nice he prefers to keep to himself and they continue on their own. They find PT Boomer is following them in his diesel and they try to lose him but wind up going into the tunnel and finding it's a dead end, Lily reads the last bit of the journal and notices the old whistle has a little trickle of sparkly dust coming out of it, she blows the whistle and suddenly she and Patch are sucked unto a rainbow colored portal that forms in the tunnel wall before Boomer's diesel closes in. They are then transported to the island of Sodor and Lily now realizes her dad had been coming here and the stories and drawings he made in the journal were real. They encounter Edward and he takes them to Sir Topham Hat II, shortly after they head off, Boomer and his diesel suddenly come through the portal, Boomer discovers his diesel now has a face and speaks with a personality not unlike his own.
Lily and Patch meet Topham Hat II and he tells them the whistle belonged to Mr Conductor, a trusted friend of his father and of Thomas. We then see flashbacks showing Thomas and Sodor in its heyday, but then one night Thomas and Mr. Conductor vanished and with them both the magic of Sodor too seemed to start fading. Meanwhile, Boomer and his Diesel meet the other diesels and they seem to have a lot in common, ambitious but in need of someone with vision to help them lay claim to Sodor once and for all. So Boomer makes a deal with them that if they help him catch Lily and Patch (knowing they have the whistle that opened the portal) he and his diesel will help them take over Sodor.
We get hijinks and a chase sequence as Lily and Patch use Edward to flee from Boomer's Diesel and the other engines work together to outfox the other diesels. Lily and Patch hide in a coal wagon while Boomer's Diesel chases after Edward but get bumped and roll down hill, out of control they find themselves barreling towards the bumpers they came from and Lily uses the last of the Whistle's magic to reopen the portal and the coal wagon emerges into the real world on the old tracks and they continue to roll though the old mountain line.
When it looks like they're going to hit a tight bend along a cliffs edge, the old hermit appears again and throws the switch so they run into a siding covered in loose sand and the coal wagon slides to the stop. They follow the Hermit to another old tunnel and finally we discover that this old hermit is none other than Ringo Starr (yes I know it's unlikely they'd get him to come back and do it but hey this is my fantasy) Mr. Conductor himself, further more in the tunnel they find an old dusty blue tank engine. He tells them that years ago he and Thomas became trapped here when his fire went out and so the magic (golden dust) ran out and they couldn't get back.
Stacy and Billy, who went looking for Lily and Patch, soon arrive and everyone's brought up to speed. Boomer is running rampant in Sodor and when he's done with that he'll be back to do the same to Shining Time. Mr Conductor reminds them that They can't go back to Sodor without Thomas and they can't get his fire going. Lily and Patch remember that they came in a coal wagon from Sodor meaning there's coal from there and maybe that will work.
Lily, Patch, and Mr. Conductor work to light Thomas' fire while Stacy and Billy return to the Station and with Schemer's help, stall Boomers contractor before they can start tearing up the tracks (they're on the land he plans to develop and would cut off Shining Time). Thomas' fire manages to light, and the old engine steams back to life. Lily, Patch, and Mr. Conductor take Thomas into the old tunnel, with golden dust billowing from Thomas, Mr. Conductor blows his whistle and they travel through the portal back to Sodor. Thomas is restored and regains his face and voice, almost immediately the golden dust begins to effect the land around them, the overgrown tracks, the dilapidated buildings, everything seem to become restored like new. Everywhere Thomas goes the other engines manage to get the upper hand over the diesels, ultimate one by one the diesels end up in Knapford Harbor and in a spectacular crash all get piled up onto a barge on its way out to sea, leaving only Boomer and his Diesel.
We then get the chase sequence and diesel goes off a bridge while Boomer survives and Mr. Conductor uses his magic to send him out of Sodor. We cut back to Shining Time and before Boomer can figure out what the heck just happened, he gets busted as the investors and employees he's swindled and stiffed have caught up with him and the project to develop the land falls through. While the day is saved, there is the question of how the town could recover and suddenly Thomas pulls into the Station with Lily, Patch, and Mr Conductor, the arrival of the little Blue engine seems to brighten things up. Mr Conductor then reveals Thomas is covered in gold dust the town can use to rebuild and recover, we then see the town thriving again with not only regular train traffic at the station but special excursion trains into the mountains, all seemed to be pulled by a different engine every week bring a boom in tourism (the sodor engines start coming to Shining Time) with Patch driving them and plenty of coal from the Sodor wagon to keep them running so none of them will get stuck again.
We then jump ahead to Lily now an adult and the Station Master, she and Patch (who's and engineer) are married and have two children. It's the end of the day and she's closing up the station so they've come to pick her up, as the two kids wait, Mr. Conductor appears to them and so we come full circle as he mentions a story about Thomas and when they ask about it, he looks to see Lily and Patch smile and nod with approval in the back and he blows his whistle, cut to end credits showing Sodor footage with all the engines and everything looking amazing..
God this took me forever to write but I wanted to share what I think would have made for a better movie than what we got. Thomas was a major part of my childhood and even now as an adult I think he deserved better for a big screen debut. Would love to hear some feedback on this concept.
Did you just write out a whole new script
It was Allcroft's creative control that got this movie into the sorry state it's in in the first place. There had already been tension in her company's relationship with the Reverend Awdry, since the show had been playing faster and looser with how railways are run in season 3, and he was dead by the time she started this filmic venture, so there was no longer the one voice that could veto an idea like this. Thus, the whole world goes off the rails, so to speak. Suddenly there's magic, and dimension-hopping steam engines, and vehicles can move by themselves and do rail work for nobody in sight, and a warship diesel with a not-even-close-to-regulation crane.

David Mitten wanted The Star Tugs, Zed Stacks, and possibly Izzy Gomez from TUGS were ment to appear in Thomas and the Magic Railroad, but Britt Alcroft still didn't like TUGS, so David Mitten's plan was canceled. Some props were shipped to Canada for filming, and smany were destroyed during transport, including Big Mickey.

I feel as though the movie needs a remaster, but not in the style thomas and friends is in now. Hopefully one day the old models with be repaired and we can get some old but new characters to voice act and play as those characters from 20 years ago

S6 and 7 are classic if Britt, David, Mike and Jr are still around - check, the episodes are 4 and a half minutes long - check, Terence, Duck, Donald, Douglas, Bill, Ben, Oliver, Toad, Stepney and the narrow gauge engines are still around - check, the stories are mostly realistic - check, no learning segments - check, doesn’t do the 3 strike formula - check. Angelis has lots of energy (in S6) - check and has the original theme song - check. All boxes ticked. Unless he didn’t grow up with S6 and 7.

I was 18 in 2000, but nostalgia value got better of me for this.... if Wilbert Awdry was not a fan of Henry’s forest, i dread to think what he would have thought about this. Being from the U.K. I knew of the USA version of the series, but never really saw it.... if I had been more clued up on that then maybe I would have enjoyed this slightly more, but just felt like sacrilegious to me
His head would probably have exploded had he lived to see this movie. This was a guy who had two illustrators dismissed and constantly disparaged a third because none of them felt like trying to meet the standards Awdry was holding them to.

There was a UA-cam channel named "Rainbow Sun Productions" who got a copy of the original script for the movie and they preformed it not with model trains but they acted it out, it was then deleted off their UA-cam channel
Because Thomas isn't in the movie as much because I call this a SHINING TIME STATION movie instead of Thomas and Friends movie.
I only just realized junior is the real hero of this story...
In the early drafts, he would have murdered Boomer and D10 in cold blood. Like, no remorse or dilemma, he just mercs them, I am dead serious.

@@wasupman1074 Yeah. Turned 'em into sludge. There's some fanart of that alternate scenario playing out depicting D10 and Boomer graphically melting into sludge, but it's more likely he'd just sprinkle gold dust and they'd explode or fade-cut to sludge.

also the fact they used US test audiences instead of UK ones sealed its fate...

And I will admit the replacement voices for Diesel 10, Thomas, Tobey, Henry, And Gordon were a little better than their original voices. But for Percy and James, they really should’ve stuck with Michael Angelis.

The "final" draft of the script does sound like a much better film than what was released in cinemas.
Still, I feel a cinematic, high-budget reshoot of many of the early stories would have been great, especially with a passionate writer to turn them into a continuous 90 minute narrative.

People need to stop hating Britt and uploading the cut illegally and going against her wishes. This film isn't bad, but it isn't good. At least it's not as bad as Calling All Engines or Misty Island Resuce. Also, Percy and James were supposed to be in the final scene with the recovered gold dust, but was cut, as well as Percy taking Junoir to the viaduct to help make Boomer and Diesel 10 vanish into boiler sludge.

26:11 I will forever stand being the original Sonic design being changed being a bad thing. We also never got a good look at the ORIGINAL original design, as the one featured in the first trailer was already a revision. Both old designs were better than making a mockery of the game's modern Sonic design for the final movie. L3aks can b3 g00d, like us getting beta versions of video games, but in this case it wasn't. Remember: just because the majority believes something, doesn't mean it is correct!
I’ve seen the work print of the original script, asides from being an unfinished form of the film, it wasn’t too bad. I felt the human interactions were a lot more genuine and the weaker sounding conductor duo was just better acting overall. I like the redubbed voices for the engines though in the released form of the film. PT Boomer is straight up an old era Disney short antagonist though and that is great.
