I've been listening to Miles since I was 30, I'm 31 now.
I've been listening to Miles since I was 18. I'm still 18.
@@System.10 I'm now 32, and absolutely enamoured with Miles Davis.
I been listening when I was 28. Now I am 27
@@johannesschmitz6370 I salute you, time traveler from the present..
Im 52 and I've been listening to him and all the greats basically since 1970 when was born ,my late mom was a jazz pianist from Harlem in the 60s and a music teacher
Trying to learn this piece with miles staring at me like "dude u fucking suck" doesn't help at all.
Don't give up keep going ☝️🧐
There’s like 3 notes bro
@@leobird8756 Yeah, famous Cannonball's 3 notes solo LOL
Fabrizio Peretti Really? That's a shame, he told me I was a 'mother fucker'. :)
How'd it go? You ever finish? On what instrument?
In my opinion the mid to late 50’s to the late 60’s had the greatest Jazz in its history.
Agree my favorite jazz period is around the 50s/60s.
West Coast Jazz, Bebop, and Bossa Nova has to be my favorite subgenres out of these decades.
@@huntrrams Love west coast jazz, I liked hard bop over bebop just cause it always leaves you with a melody stuck in your head all day
60's and 70's had the best jazz
Yes I agree with your comment.
Released 60 years ago today, timeless music
HaliniSnow WOW 😮
AND SOUNDS IT WAS MADE A MOMENT AGO AWESOME 👏😎
TRULY! WOW, wouldn't have guessed it's that old
Love those horn riffs
This will sound fresh 200 years from now. Children haven't been born that will be hearing, learning and possibly playing this music hundreds of years from today. Davis will be remembered as the Mozart of jazz.
This is one of the classiest jazz pieces ever... It evokes feelings of Uptown nightlife, shiny motor vehicles, cigar smoke and tall buildings. Beautiful.
Yeah, brother!
0:39 That intro is just godlike
Petter NV It's remarkable. And then he quotes Fascinating Rhythm in the most wonderful way.
But did you hear the Rite of Spring quote at 1:10?! The horn solo from The Augurs of Spring Dances of the Young Girls. I mean COME ON!!!
You can get the intro as a ringtone for iPhones. I have it and each time I get a phone call I just let it ring
Terrific!
Go listen to Fẹlá Kútì's "Shakara"...
I’ve been listening to Miles since I was 15, now 81 and I’m still finding his soul in his sound
God bless you then sir . Milestones _ _ much better than kidney stones _ _ right ?
OK. Am 76 and feel the same.
What an amazing sax solo!
Hey! That's an accomplishment tobe proud of! Swing on man!😎
i've been listening to miles davis since i was 11 and now im 13
i will beat your record
Why would you be here if you didn't appreciate great jazz and musicianship? Thumbs up!
Miles is as smooth as his beautiful skin!!!!
Amen, Angela Moore
I came here from the Wikipedia article on the dorian mode, after reading about Óró Sé Do Bheatha 'Bhaile and Drunken Sailor.
Some people just feel the need to be negative
‘Cause I wanted to find the background music of a jazz related ad
@Guitar Lava that's the kind of positivity i can appreciate! love anti-gatekeeping
Cannonball Adderley, in my humbled opinion, out finesses Coltrane on this track. The off rhythm, the bending/squealing of notes, the twisted timing, then returning to syncopation. Ingenious.
+Iskaldt UK The first
+john maleski Incorrect. Cannonball has the first solo, followed by Miles, ending with Coltrane.
+Iskaldt UK Coltrane has the third solo.
And you can repeat that for Kind of Blue as well. Cannonball just lights it up.
Jep, and during this era it was just another day at the office with nowhere to go but up.
5:07
A clam that you willingly eat.
Miles forever, forever Miles.
+Terry Miller haha didnt even notice it at first
So cool indeed. Recordings used to be so expensive and they needed most of the money for drugs ;), so this one recording was near perfect enough for their taste. I think they were right! :D.
this boosts my self esteem. thank miles!
Terry, I replayed that 3 times, and no doubt, it's a flub, but when you're Miles, there are no flubs, just "accents or flavors" I reckon. Takes a horn player to even notice, I guess he didn't want to ruin the mood for a retake. Brilliant song regardless.
Dude I love how he doesn't give a shit that he messed up, and no one else should either. They guy was a genius, mistakes and all.
00:39 CB alto
01:59 MD trumpet
03:20 JC tenor
Grateful Varmints
You’re welcome!
Thank you =)
Coltrane complimented miles in sooo many ways
Just asked about 00:39 thanks!
CB is Mr Cannon Ball (adderley)
I still can't believe how good John Coltrane's tone sounds on this track. So powerful and bright. Aggressive and intense yet controlled
I know right, he plays like how a butterfly flies.
thanks
@@johncoltrane2656 anytime Mr. Coltrane
@@johncoltrane2656 lmao
John Coltrane was a musical genius in his own right. I don't think anyone sounded better playing with Miles Davis than John Coltrane did. What a pair!!!
Cannonball is so lyrical and yet so technical!
I like his playing also very much!
His playing on all the labums of this era including kind of blue is more polished and pleasant than coltranes, but he didn't lean into the modal thing as hard. Coltrane was always at the forefront.
I love his sound.
He was also a music teacher. So voila the technical side!
Fantastic through it all. 🎶🎼🎵🎵🎶🎶🎵🎶🎵🎷
DJ
Adderley quotes Fascinating Rhythm in his solo. This music is so full of material .
Sure is an honor to be named after him!
Indeed...
Who’s Miles Johnson ?
@@martyfeldman3269 he cant change his last name from Johnson to davis lol
I love how Trane "answers" Miles in the beginning of his solo. Trane and Miles complemented each other perfectly, even more so than Bird and Diz
thats why miles was so pissed off when he had to fire coltrane over the Heroin use. He knew coltrane was irreplaceble.
Miles answers Cannonball at beginning of his solo, also.
still growing as a jazz guy, what do you mean he answers Miles?
tonal vocabulary...music does talk...
Very good players often begin their solos by continuing what the last guy was playing and then mixing in their own material as they continue.
Most instrumental music to me is timeless because the listeners’ imagination can take them wherever they want to go.
Well said
Yes! This is my mantra about music! 🙏
THIS IS MY HISTORY MY DAD HAD ME LISTENING TO THIS GOOD JAZZ MUSIC SINCE THE AGE OF 6yr I’m 55 going on 56 years R.I.P MY DAD ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Cannonball has such a joyful, spiritual sound on Alto. It sounds like a sunny breezy day
Real cool Jazz from the late great Miles Davis in the late 1950s.
I've honestly been looking for this song for about 6 hours... first thought it was Charles Mingus and looked through every song then thought it was Duke Ellington.... looked through all his songs........... BUT I'VE FINALLY FOUND IT!!!
Isn't it a great feeling when you finally find it, though?
You honestly thought this Charles Mingus
+La Cappin The Charles Mingus Band has an excellentrendition of it, I highly recommend you give it a listen
Already have
Frankly I've studied almost every jazz musician I am making way over to classical side and I'm only 14
スケールがモードになっても、唄心がまったく変わらないのは凄いと思います。〝マイルストーン〟の疾走感、大好きです。
I think its amazing that the swing feel doesn't change at all when the scale gose into mode.
Milestone`s sense of highway driving. I love it.
It's 2021 and I'm 14 and oh how I love old music and especially jazz. Amazing!
You have good ears.....imagine when you will be 30yrs old.....your on the right track young man.
clearly you are bright kid
that's around the time I started... keep on it young one, there's more and more and more to understand each time you listen. Keep on loving it
good job Ninguang ;)
@@alosyus lmfao
2020 still here loud and clear. (Xtra clean).
Cannon Ball's solo on this tune is impeccable.
Absolutely transcendant, defies time
It sure is! So inventive and yet melodic as can be.
Cannonball Adderley steals the show here.
Here and elsewhere also : )
I can't choose. Cannon's solo is so joyous and exuberant. Trane's is so commanding and bluesy. They both inspire me.
fosbury68 THEY ALL DID THEIR THING
keep dreaming
Absolutely!
Miles Davis isn't just the greatest trumpet player of all time but he is one of the coolest cats in history and is jazz music personaified
Thats a legit argument...miles best jazz musician to graze the planet
The playing is so slick, crisp, and alive...ageless... pure musical professionalism
5:07 The wonderful sound of a teenage voice crack.
Now that you showed me, I’ll never forget...smh😂
For me it is like a trapeze artist nearly missing the grip but ends it in a beautiful move. Such little things make music, at least for me, more exciting.
Cannonball
Is the best part, just like the intro at 0:23. It adds depth to the main theme.
One of my favorite recordings from this group. I love how each solo plays right off the last lick from the previous guys solo. These cats were the best of the best.
Reagan McCann these cats are felonious
Personally I like the live version better for some reason. Seems like they were all loose and enjoyed playing the song more live Than recorded.... or maybe it was the atmosphere... who knows.. lol
I thank my father for introducing me to jazz with this song.
…the background bass and piano is softer but so important -beautiful mixing.
The baseline is so important
Indeed, the way they anticipate and augment. Boss level.
Jazz perfection. What else can one say? The most lyrical musician ever. The way he communicated his emotions and feelings through his trumpet is pure genius.
If I had to pick a sound track that represented my life, "Milestones" would be it hands down!
mizpahboy The one that represents mine is “Flamenco Sketches”...
There's nothing better than being home alone with my cat on a rainy weekend with no appointments, lighting up a joint and pursuing my hobbies while music like this is playing.
ATTENTION MILES FANS: The tune was actually entitled MILES. MILESTONES is the title of the album (Columbia CL-1193). MILESTONES was also a misprint on the first selection of the B-side, which appeared on numerous copies before Columbia Records finally corrected the title of the tune. The tune, MILESTONES, was composed by John Lewis, which was recorded on August 14th, 1947 at Nola Studios in New York City. Yard was on tenor, Miles on trumpet, Lewis on piano, Max on drums and Nelson Boyd on bass. It was Miles' first record date as a leader.
60 years on and this still sounds as good as the first time ... timeless.
This is golden. Never had the time to ENJOY jazz but due to COVID 19, this is my saving grace. Music always makes you feel better. *Beautiful
Amen.
You spelled CON VID wrong.
Dig it!
Miles Davis, simply the best. King of Jazz
It outlives any other "trend". Cause trends come and go, this right here holds the legendary title.
Philly Joe Jones kicks ass here. the "Philly" licks are tasty as hell. so is Cannonball's solo.
All philly is doing is playing a swing beat with a crosstick on beat 4 for the entirety of this song. Im assuming youre talking bout the rest of the album though because yeah he really kills it on some of the other songs
@@aidanschram9652 it's a masterful lesson in understatement and subtle variations. listen to 2:49 Miles first slowing down then at 3:10 firing it up, and he reacts with a few perfectly timed accents, then builds up that energy all the way through the tenor solo. he's thinking in big pictures, like an architect
Funny story Philly pawned Miles drums and only had a ride and snare on this date. Story told by Dennis Chambers
The rhythm at 1:28 ... simply fascinating
Clever.
one might even say he's got it.. wait wrong tune
Lol
I first heard milestones in the summer of 1959 when I was in bed on a Saturday night with my radio plugged in to Radio Luxemburg where we all thought it was all recorded. I had extended my aerial all around the room to try and get the best reception. That evening was almost perfect reception and the introducers were Peter Haig and Bery Reid. All was perfect until the saxophone solo when the reception started to falter as it always did at some time so I missed some of it but I loved it and this was my introduction to Miles Davis and in my view he never did anything as good again.
People who were not around then never knew the excitement of Radio Luxemburg. It was the only pop commercial radio station and everyone was so gentlemanly then. You never even minded the adverts, They were never overlong. A sad cry from what you hear today.
It is without a doubt one of his best
At this point, Miles was the coolest man on the planet....
This is my all time favorite Miles Davis track, what a jam
In 2020 this track just blows me away.
And still does in 2021. Great music is timeless and Milestones is just one such example.
In 2021! And I Am even not a die hard Jazz fan.. but this is marvellous. The rhytmn section, Cannonball..
If you could go back in time and tell Miles that his legacy would live on through UA-cam he’d probably say “What’s UA-cam”.
He'd be disappointed.
I couldn’t help but read that in Miles’ voice in my head and that made it 10 times more hilarious lol
You talking about Miles, his typical reply, for strangers comments were "what's your name? Fuck You!"
@@JK..INFX.D.... He might not even care to ask my name.
Miles was an artist of all time, would embrace and social media and kept it moving... As you've seen his music evolved with the new...
This piece is nearly 70 years old, but it sounds fresh as if it was created yesterday!!
Paul Chambers on that bass line tho. my god.
Thanks for him ; Paul Chambers (4/22/1935 - 1/4/1969) is 22 years old on that one. He plays the bass on so much masterpieces, among them so much Miles finest ones or Coltrane's pearls ; listen to Paul Chambers, for example, on ''Stolen Moments'' -1961- by Oliver Nelson : I'm so impressed by P.C.'s high level of simplicity, natural elegance in his way of playing, in his sound... Paul Chambers' bassline on Coltrane's ''Naima'' alternate take is awesome : the alt.take with no piano solo
The Genius of the Black Man. Trust me.
This music got my feet moving, now my legs, now my hips...whooooaaaa....SMILES....
This is Mile's masterpiece!
His trumpet sound is like no other trumpet player.
Cue Clifford Brown please.
安定感が気持ち良い!ジャズの醍醐味が味わえる!流石にマイルス!当時のジャズとしては珍しくフェイドアウトで終るのも新鮮ですね!
So clean, so precise, a portal to our best possible lives rendered as sound.
I just realized the whole tune is over C Mixo-Lydian?!? and then A minor scale....for the entire song?!?!? Wonderful, amazingly creative solos over a static chord!!
that's how modal jazz is like
Indeed, this is them beginning to experiment with modal sketches as compositions. It’s like the height of jazz to me hehe
The Rolling sounds of Cannonball, are sounds that can only be the inspiration of our great creator ! Motivation of God !
I was 6 yrs. old. they were kickin' ass. I didn't know it yet !!, still are!!
I've been listening to Miles since I was -425 years old. I'm 31,891 years old now and I still love his sound
Cannonball rules! He quotes Stravinsky's Rite of Spring (1:10)
and Gershwin's Fascinating Rhythm (1:28) in his solo
Good artists borrow, great artists steal
@@Manu-pc9bk "You can't steal a gift. Bird gave the world his music, and if you can hear it you can have it" - Dizzy Gillespie
Darn tootin’! Good ear!
The fascinating rhythm quote hits SO HARD
I'm also ashamed of myself that I never realised it was the rite of spring
SALUTE TO ALL THESE GREAT 👍🏽 MUSICIANS 🎼🎵🎶
Vintage jazz music is highly enjoyable.
My favorite 5 minutes of jazz, moreso than anything on Kind Of Blue...
miles Davis rules
The great Sextet: 1958, (Kind of Blue came out 1959)
Miles Davis - Trumpet
Cannonball Adderley - AS
John Coltrane - TS
Red Garland-Piano
Paul Chambers - Bass
Philly Joe Jones- Drums
Yo, the real question is though. Is it Mile Stones, or Mile's Tones?
Were not ready for that
Wow - how deep man. (Sarcasm)
Miles mode
Miles' Stones!
Yo real answer here:
Ive just gotten 'Miles Stoned' and I dont know where I am.
Lo escucho desde los 6 años mi padre siempre lo ponía los domingos, me crié con grandes del Jazz , Davis , Coltrane, Getz, ...hoy con 60 los sigo disfrutando y transmito esta bella música a mis hijos...
my favourite song of miles davis discography
Anybody listening to this in 2019?🔥🌹
Mee!!
No Every ones Dead except you
Hello, Vajiko!
This song is a jazz standard it is timeless
Oh, HELL yes.
when I was 19 yrs old Miles was the coolest man on the planet - never mind the music he wore great clothes and was so cool on stage
Cannonball scorches this first solo!
nice "facinating rhythm" ...how could one not smile along with this classic modal monster...wow
When I listen to music, I like things that evoke visuals regardless of genre, such as classical and jazz. Miles is worth it. He doesn’t necessarily explain difficult things. He may be doing difficult things, but he does his job in a catchy and cool way
IF HISTORY COULD ONLY REPEAT ITSELF; I WITNESSED THIS GREAT ARTIST, TALENTED AND CREATIVE. PHILADELPHIA SHOWBOAT IN 1959. MILES, CANNONBALL, COLTRAIN, GARLAND, AND PHILLY JOE JONES...THE RHYTHM SECTION.

One of his absolute bests.
It's a music that calms us ... It stays in time. Beautiful music.
Can we share a moment for Mr Adderly’s lyricism? Pick any song by this quartet, and it’s there to behold.
love this song playing it at school too

There is no future. there is no past. there is only the present.

Jhon Jennings yo we played that last year too word!
HEAVENLY!
This is so pretty, Mr. Davis. Nice lil' sleek, classy groove. I absolutely love what's going on underneath the trumpet.
Gershwin's Fascinating Rhythm at 1:28!
Miles one of the great bandleaders of all time without whom a large share of the greatest 20th century music would’ve never happened.
Miles' first great quintet. I remember listening to this tune on Symphony Sid's radio show when I was 16 years old and in high school...
This is the ONLY TEMPO that anyone else playing it should use to respect the original.
Cannonball's solo is amazing!!
Coltrane showing you what he knows ...
Cannonball giving you hints of depth and class ...
Miles is so not in a hurry to let you cool down and realize he is the Boss ❤.
Thanks for sharing .
Not forgetting the bassist , pianist and drummer .
Thank you UA-cam for helping to preserve things via the media
I remember buying that album in 1975 right after being discharged from the Air Force. I was going to L.A. City College and there was record store across the street that sold jazz albums for two bucks apiece. Listen to Red Garlands' Billy Boy. It's rare when a band leader gives a solo spot to a sideman on a album.
1:28 Deep Purple - Burn
This song is the mood I'd like to have on Monday mornings while running to work..
In a dream world.
Coltrane's second solos are always stunning
Miles Davis, el mejor del mundo.
Every time I listen to Miles, my mind opens up.
Great song to be driving on the freeway or similar.Miles music is timeless...
Fun fact: Miles isn’t playing the trumpet on this track. He’s playing the flugelhorn.
When I was in junior high school, I learned about Miles Davis on the local radio program "Midnight Jazz Report."
I also learned the word personel at that time.
Man this guy knows how to Jazz like a king. Great song!
