I remember spending an entire Sunday riding the DLR trains in early 1995. I was a French language assistant at a posh private school and was in awe of what city planners, architects and investors had done to turn a derelict industrial wasteland into a vibrant, modern district with luxury condos, high-rise office buildings, an airport and its own light rail system. You Brits are wonderful and never cease to amaze me.
Amazing!
Brits are wonderful, but they sometimes cease to amaze me.
@@billoddy5637 We feel the same about ourselves sometimes
DLR is pretty good. Very efficient.
It was wonderful to hear the child talking, and asking mummy many questions. It made me tear up remembering my mum. Great journey.
Thanks so much for posting this journey. Some of my fondest memories of residing in London for 6 months came jumping out to me while watching this DIY documentary. I took a flat near Crosssharbour and commuted into central London every day despite having ready access to a vehicle. Drinking beer and debating with the locals at The George and getting my groceries at Asda became the norm. As an American I have come to respect Londoners-I rarely felt alone in such a metropolis. I worked 4 10 hour days per week at The US Embassy so I was bestowed with the honor to really get out and explore this fine city. Regretfully 6 months time was not enough. Being a Londoner I felt I developed a real sense of identity with the British people. My only complaint is the fact I can no longer find a decent Cornish Pasty anywhere.
David Huber. Come back anytime, mate, you will always be welcome! Cornish pasty? you almost sound native!
Take a trip next time to Cornwall, not the touristy Cornwall though, for proper pasties and Saffron cake!
@@Mounhas David I think there may be companies here in Cornwall who will do "Pasties by Express post" to anywhere in the world. Usually uncooked and frozen, but you just thaw and then bake and there you are! So, if your cravings get too bad.... :-)
Nothing beats eating real proper pasties on a seat overlooking a Cornish harbour though - so do be sure to visit Cornwall when you next make it back to the UK
i live in japan. i was able to see the landscape of london in this video. station located between the building was very interesting, thank you
If I worked in one of the buildings the tracks cross under, I would be watching the trains all day long and never get any work done.
you mean Heron Quays? There’s a building above the track there!
Your profile picture does have that "watching trains from a window while trying to get work done" kind of vibe :)
Bruh bruh
I love watching these cab videos when I start my day with a cup of coffee, a pen in hand, preparing the day ahead.
Everyday a different city, a different line.
Thanks for the upload! Much appreciated
One of the most legendary cities, the sheer scale and grandeur of turning the Docks and the banks of Thames into what they are today is an example and a feat of its own! Huge respect from Sofia, Bulgaria, London, and thanks for housing a lot of bulgarians within your legendary "walls" as well
Most enjoyable journey. I have finally ridden the famous DLR. I didn't even have to fly 18,000 kms to "get there"; so thank you.
In about 5 years, Singapore will have its very own version of the DLR, called the Jurong Region Line (JRL). Love the uniqueness and eccentricity of the DLR in London from Singapore. Cheers!
Why can't it be Jurong Light Railway (JLR)
The sharpness of some of those turns and the insane gradients have always amazed me with the DLR
I know! Something you can get away with when you have a light railway. You couldn't do this with regular trains, or even London Underground trains.
It's why the DLR feels more like a rollercoaster than a railway! .. it's thrilling going up and then suddenly taking a sharp right turn before plunging down into a tunnel at speed!!
I rode this route recently for the first time and was also suprised by the bends and gradients.
this os why the train is so unsteady on the straight tracks, swaying side to side. The wheels are con-caved in such a way it allows to take sharp bends but it will sway because the wheels cant balance on the tracks
I really enjoyed that! Amazing how the Docklands has grown in the last 25 years.
DLR: Docklands Light Rollercoaster :)
mistahwolfie Docklands light railway u mean
phwooosh!
michaela harris Pretty sure it's Docklands Light Rollercoaster
why cuz the tracks like a rollercoaster track
NAH
The child was very excited. There was a Portuguese lady doing a lot of chatting. A fascinating journey that must cover a lot of history. Presumably the DLR uses some of the old tube lines. Did the train pass through Marc Brunels tunnel, the first in the world built under a river? Limehouse used to be a shady area notorious for Chinese sailors and opium dens. Lots of Peabody like flats around Shadwell ( the first big builder of social housing.
I believe the DLR has been mostly built from scratch, not using old tube lines.
The DLR used abandoned railways on some parts of the line
Most interesting was seeing the odd building that Jerry failed to bomb. The East End folks had a hard time in WW2 and the new buildings and open areas give an idea of the terrible destruction they endured. A lot of land though has been made available by the closure of the docks, which of course was also a prime Luftwaffe target.
Nice video, I enjoyed hearing the kid talking too. People talking doesn't bother me. It also doesn't bother me when kids are moving around. Nice one!
What I like about the DLR is that even though it is automated, it still has much of a "feel" of ordinary rapid transit/light rail. There are no platform doors, the system has many branches, and it runs through many environments, including tunnels and on the ground
If there are no platform doors, how do passengers get on and off the train?
He means the platform edge doors - these form a safety barrier to reduce the risk of passengers (specially children) from falling into the rails, the train will aline its door sets with the ones in the barrier and will simultaneously open & close both doors, these barriers are made of toughened safety glass with metal frames - these are slowly being introduced at some international train stations, because of how safe they are - in comparison to the old [Victorian - when the railway was invented] traditional open platform, which are extremely dangerous
I was in london for a month and I used to board from Greenwich and get down at Canary wharf. It brought back so many memories 😍
Same here. I was there for a month too. Used to travel from Canary Wharf to Lewisham on Sundays :)
Loved the running commentary from the kid - priceless!
IKR? Little kids who loudly narrate whatever is going on around them crack me up.
Please NO ! Could the child's voice not have been muted ? it was so annoying !
not at all commentary its just an arse of a kid pointing out places where the track turns and saying mummy so loud it drowns out the rest of the audio
Ted thesailor yeah alright we know you love kids calm down
@@akmedia8206 Who's "we", and how do you know this...?
Thanks for this. During the majority of this pandemic, I've been watching these kind of videos - it kind of soothes me seeing people going about their day (even though it was 8 years ago)
I remember the first time I rode the DLR, I was 8 years old. The train really got some speed on the way into London and I thought it was like a rollercoaster. I'm not really that impressed any more, but it's still a very nice railway!
I love watching these cab view vids. Sad or what, lol.
+underwaterbubbles I love them too. I pulled up Google maps just to see WHERE in London the stops were....THAT'S sad....;-)....lol
Its only sad to those that dont understand. Variety is what life is all about.
The DLR doesn't have a driver
+underwaterbubbles I went on a special mission from Bognor Regis to ride the DLR yesterday just to make sure Mudchute actually exists.
Now that's SAD.
+outaspaceman I like cardboard boxes, that's sad!
I have worked on the DLR for 19 years but up until now, the Lewisham to Mudchute line was operated by a different company so I had very little reason to work on that leg. Now we have taken it over, I have been watching videos of this section of track to get a better understanding of track assets and locations.
OMG, Heron Quays, Canary Wharf & West India Quay stations are so near, in fact it's equivalent to singapore's Outram Park to Chinatown to Clark Quay Stations
Yeah.
Should do the route into Bank at night. It looks quite spectacular as the train travels around the tall buildings before decending into the depths that is Bank station.
And you could see the London Eye but now you can’t see it anymore because an apartment blocked the view… 😢
Dude! Now I know why your subway is called 'the tube', those tunnels are awesome! I like your subways. Theyre much better than the ones we have here in NYC
+Lry This isn't the tube. This is the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) it has fully automated trains. This is seperate to the London Underground (Tube)
+Sion Lewis oh sorry!
I could see why you thought it was the tube though
People don't do disruption, though. They expect someone to wave a magic wand and it all be done immediately. Round where I live they're raising a road bridge so they can electrify the line and people were bitching about the works. Not like there was another bridge literally 300 yards further along.
afxinfinitee I couldn't that any better
you know it´s gonna be a bad ride when 8:33
IKR, just keep the headphones on and pray they don't sit next to you and/or get off quickly
@@theaccountant1295 if the situation keeps getting worse, you may need to buy some noise cancelling headphones lmao😂
yeah
This is why I always have my noise-cancelling headphones (Galaxy Buds) on playing my bass boosted music on maximum volume every time I travel anywhere. And if I can still hear them, I just get off the train and get the next one.
In just 9 years so much has changed in south Quay. It feels weird seeing it in this video without Madison, Wardian and Landmark Pinnacle. It is like a completely different place.
Heron Quays is such a cool station
In Toronto our current transit train system is way to small for its population. There is currently construction building a new 19km light rail system line (we currently have no light rail systems) and 10km of it will run underground like a subway. There is another section of the city that was due to build a 7km, 7 stations light rail line above ground but travelling on a separate track from the road . However people complain that Light Rail systems don't work well mainly because our city has the 6th biggest old Trolly/Streetcar whatever you want call it, system in the world that mostly runs on the street sharing with car traffic and they have yet to see the finished light rail line that is still under construction. So instead people seem to not trust light rail thinking it is not much different then a streetcar and want a 3km, 2 stations Subway expansion that cost double the amount proposed for the Light Rail system. If only they saw DLR in London they would realize it works great and is nothing like our old streetcars that are more like a bus then a train.
The most impressive thing here is the complete lack of any graffiti throughout the journey. It is apparent that any graffiti appearing has been painted over. To my mind, such a policy in the end makes the vandals mostly give up, and this should be done on railways nationally.
I love the sharp descent to Bank!
However this train was moving relatively slow- I've been on trains that have flied down the tunnel to Bank!
i was on a DLR going through the tunnel
HOLY SHIT
the train was rocking from side to side
also did you know in that tunnel there is a tiny pathway on the right side of the tunnel
bro the tunnel at woolwich arsenal the train goes fucking beast mode
Good memories while I was watching this video. Loved it
That last portion to Bank really scared me as the descent was still ongoing at high speed.
I thought that 'The Kid" was quite well behaved actually.
Part of the attraction to the DLR for kids is that they can sit at the front and pretend they are the driver. My little grandson loves it.
We do Shadwell to Bank and back again. So if you are on the same train as us please don't moan ;)
i heard a really annoying kid on a DLR
was probably yours
but it wasnt that bad
No worries, us grown-ups like to pretend as well...
Luke Loves MC! // LLM innocent kid. Probably 3 years old just amazed at the ride!
he was well behaved and so interested in the ride.
Oh please on my dlr train from my school in lewisham to cutty sark I deal with spazmoids teenage girl shit bags
8:48 Mummy, sit down!
I know their statistically safer but I have this unreasonable distrust of autonomous vehicles. I never had to take the DLR but I definitely think I'd have been a little on edge while doing it to be honest.
Such a cool little train, I rode it once when I was 10.
I can’t wait to do cutty sark to bank when I go for the formula e at the excel next month. Organised some food at zizzis in Greenwich and I have to alight at cutty sark
The first train in London to drive by itself
True
Nope, the Victoria line has been driving its self since it was first opened in the late 60s and it predates the DLR by 20 years
From 25:22 I feel like I'm entering that weird space dimension that the G-Man puts people into at the endings of Half Life 1/2/Op For.
Done that journey a few 100 times, seems like only yesterday it terminated at Island Gardens
last time I went to London, the DLR only ran between Bank and Island Gardens... I've not been to London in a very long time
Yes, the current Island Gardens station is not the original one (which was above ground and had two platforms, not an Island platform like now).
In order to cross the river into Deptford and Greenwich they opted for a tunnel rather than a bridge. So it meant having to have a new station at Island Gardens.
Imagine getting on the DLR at Canary Wharf and getting off and West India Quays
this takes me back, to when i used to ride the DLR from Lewisham to Bank.
The kid so cute
The DLR is awesome!
Nice train trip- Im an Englishman here in Dallas watching this nice clip.
People need to learn that they were kids aswell, "the kid" was just interested in the DLR, i reckon you were interested when you saw trains or whatever.
So please grow up
He made the jounery more Interesting imangine a train which dont have a real driver?
And not a green field in sight :( what a depressing place.
Why would there be green fields in centre of London? That would be some incredibly expensive real estate.
@@MusicGroupy There are green fields in the centre of London, specifically Hyde Park, Green Park, Richmond Park etc. and building on them would realise millions if not billions, but there would be riots if anyone tried to do that. Where the DLR runs an industrial wasteland has been developed into a business area, with only a few green patches.
@@mikeyaureliush9017, they are not "fields", they are royal parkland.
@@MusicGroupy Well whatever you call them they can still be regarded as incredibly expensive real estate.
very nice video,greetings from Greece
Wish I lived in London :( my boyfriend and his family hail from Hackney and my mum in her late teens lived in Ruislip
Hackney since LONDON olimpics have developed alot.
Try watching at 2x speed, then it feels like a roller coaster :)
Just simply wonderful!
The last time I got on the DLR ..you had to walk through the tunnel to get to the Cutty Sark !
Did he get on the train????? 1:27
+Christopher Scott I think so, you can see it in the monitors on the left ;)
8:50 at Island Gardens
best bit is getting on at the start of a line and getting that prime front seat and pretending your driving the train
Portuguese people speaking towards the end of the video. hehe
Good video :)
Excellent video
ah this is the journey I took every week day for the past year to get to college (lewisham to Canary wharf or Poplar... then change a couple times to get to East india) but now it's over I doubt I'll need to take this route again for a long time... I don't know why I feel kinda sad about it cause rush hour commuting every day is totally soul draining haha, but it became a routine I guess I'll miss a bit...
took this from city airport to the tube station, london has the best trains for getting around

Great footage, I'm planning on doing something like this myself, how do you film it without getting the glare from the window?
I like this line very much hope one day can get on this train.
I love the DLR. My favourite transport.
12:13 RIP Red Front Train Now Its Black.

The next train at platform 5 and 6 is for bank.
The next stop is Stratford where we terminate please take all your belonging's when leaving the train.
Good clear images. Which make and model of camera did you use for this?
You're one of the driver's right? ... Oh, wait...
You know what folks I don't know if you notice there's no single lights on London subway line
There are no drivers to see them!
Great acceleration!
Interesting varies view.
And I'll be looking forward to the VR version of this thing. Except for the tunnels. I hate tunnels. Did ya ever work underground? Let me tell ya how much I hate tunnels.

4:24 Are they going over the River Thames?
No they went under it between Cutty Sark and Island Gardens. The water you see is at Canary Wharf (I think) where it is going over Docklands.
