This song is a classic. It features Del tha Funkee Homosapien during the rap verses. He’s Ice Cube’s cousin from Oakland. He gained moderate success in the 90s with his unique style of alternative hip hop but kinda faded into obscurity around the turn of the century due to drug issues. I’d highly recommend giving his catalog a look. He’s very creative with the subject matter of his songs as well as word choices. Deltron 3030 is a collaboration he did Dan the Automator and Kid Koala and it’s absolute fire.
They did a bunch of collabs with rappers... Mos Def, De La Soul, MF Doom, Andre 3000, D12, Danny Brown, Pusha T, Prince Paul, Schoolboy Q, Vince Staples and lots more
If you go back to the movie "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" in the end it was about a bunch of gunslingers looking for gold that had been hidden with only Clint Eastwood being told where to find the "sunshine in a bag". Freaking love the Gorillaz music and music video!
Jamie Hewlett is the Gorillaz animator. He is also the artist behind "Tank Girl comics." Damon Albarn was in Blur before coming up with Gorillaz. He will use local artists to perform in concert.
I don't think the name was too deep, it was purely the fact that the starting theme is similar to that movie. The animator and artist for the characters is Jamie Hewlett, he has such a dope art style
There can be more than one or no guest artist for any of their songs, not just rappers. The guest artists are never any of the four core animated band members. The guy that created gorillaz and the front man is Damon Albarn and he is the voice of 2D the animated singer. Damon, other band members and the guest artists will be live on stage with the animation in the background. Hope that helps 👍 edit: Jamie Hewlett is the guy who animates all the gorillaz artwork and videos.
Yup 100% Gorillaz is 2 people... an actual musician/lead singer and a graphic artist... everyone one else who shows up in their lineup is a guest appearance.. they often use the same musicians for live shows and albums but no one else is actually full time official members.. Mike Smith on keyboard is the only constant in their albums besides lead singer Damon and graphic artist Jamie. Damon is also the lead singer of the 90s EU alternative band Blur. The more you know :D
They will be live on stage but hidden, I saw one live performance and they were behind what it looked like a curtain. You can see their silhouettes only.
You guys should check out a Blur song just to hear how diverse the lead singer for that and this band is. Song #2 (everyone's heard this song whether they know it or not), Girls and Boys, Coffee and TV, There's No Other Way...
Damian is also the lead singer of the band ‘the good, the bad and the Queen’, they’ve only made two albums, both great and a great live band, saw them in 2018 in London.
Fun fact: Del tha Funkee Homosapien is cousin to Ice Cube Still gotta check out Dare, El Manana, and Andromeda Also Damon Albarn(who handles the music while Jamie Hewlett handles character animation) was also in a group during the 90s called Blur. While Blur's most known tune is Song 2(which is ironic considering lyrical content), it's a little overrated and overplayed. So instead I recommend Parklife, Coffee and TV, Girls and Boys or The Universal

You guys did an amazing job, as always but, I wanna thank several of the people in comments for bringing to light many things that I have always been curious about with Gorillaz! So....... Thank you so very much Trash Talkers!💙👊🏼💙
The name of the song came about because of the use of a melodica throughout the song Damon Albarn thought it sounded like the score to a fist full of dollars, that and seeing a Jamaican Reggae artist also called Clint Eastwood during the writing of it sealed the deal. another nod to Clint is made with the sunshine in a bag line which comes from the Good the Bad and the Ugly where Clint describes a saddle bag full of gold as sunshine in a bag (Also a nod the the Jamaican Clint as it probably references a bag of marijuana too.)
One thing I absolutely love about this song (apart from the ICONIC song it is) its that at least on the official video, the end of the second rap part, the line "that it's all in your head", have kind of a filter, and it sounds different on a speaker, on headphones and even might not sound at all like on the audio of the video, it's literally all in your head. If I may recommend a song, listen to Saturn Barz from the Humanz album! But really, you can't go wrong with Gorillaz
The line I got sunshine in a bag is about some drug but it’s also referencing the good the bad and the ugly when Clint Eastwood show a saddle bag full of gold and says it’s like sunshine in a bag
Damon Albarn called it Clint Eastwood simply because the main melody that’s played on the melodica and sung at in the intro reminded him of the Ennio Morricone Theme from The Good Thw Bad And The Ugly. It’s not actually from the film... it’s an original melody he wrote, but he realized how much it sounded like that Theme. As far as the lyrics go, they really have nothing to do with Clint Eastwood at all. The only connection his name has to the song is to the melody. But on the lyrics, they just told Del The Funkee Homosapien the basic concept of Russel’s backstory, which partly basically goes that he was outside a 7-11 with a group of his hip hop musician homies, and they were shot up in a drive-by and all his friends died, and subsequently possessed him, which is why his eyes are milky white. His rapper friends which now possess him can come out of him and the rapper “Del The Ghost Rapper” is the one in the video. That’s the basic gist, and Del, just took that concept and went HAM. As far as any deeper meaning, it’s definitely not official or substantiated by anything the band or Del has said, but some think that “sunshine in a bag” is a reference to the infamous Owsley “Orange Sunshine” LSD from the 60s. And IMO, the lyrics definitely fit that theme. But that’s just my opinion. Like I said, it’s not substantiated, but I’m not the only one who thinks it.
The reason it's called Clint Eastwood is because of the sound of the instrument Damon Albarn uses at the beginning, and throughout, because it sounded like the part from The Good, The Bad and the The Ugly! (it's in the BANANAZ Documentary.)
The Gorillaz is an ever changing ensmble with Damon Albarn as 2D best known for his work with the band Blur. Whose biggest hit was Song 2 ( the Whoo hoo song). The other animated characters are Noodle Murdoch and Russel. Who are always performed by various artists
If I remember correctly from a documentary about gorillaz this song is him stripping away the restraints from his previous music career where he felt trapped by the norm of the music industry so starting gorillaz was a way to break free and do his own thing and hes own way
The Zombie monkey crotch grab and react got me immediately thinking. If y'all haven't seen the movie Dead Alive by Peter Jackson ( Meet the Feebles, Lord of the Rings), uncensored version only, you have GOT TO. It will be your new fave zombie movie, GUARANTEED!
Del came after NWA and is actually Ice Cube's cousin. He appeared on 2 tracks from the debut but something stopped him from coming back for the second so they went with guests from then on. Most appeared only once but there are exceptions such as De La Soul who have returned. Del is the only rapper to get a cartoon counterpart in the band (the ghost in Russell the drummer) and he only had this as they did want him to return initially.
The reason the song is called Clint Eastwood, is the main Hook is a sample from The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and throughout the verses, Del randomly drops quotes from Clint Eastwood characters
They very rarely do shows with no animations, it's kinda brilliant actually, because while Damon Albarn and members from his old band Blur played Gorillaz songs with an orchestra in Denmark, the animation show was in Japan lol and they had enough mistakes in the show to reveal that they really don't perform this music like that very often, especially not with an orchestra.
So if you want to do an unconventional deep dive, you should check out some of the other projects of Dan the Automator, who produced the Gorillaz project. His project with Kool Keith was Dr. Octagon, his project with Del was Deltron3030 (Del was finishing this project with Dan when Dan asked him to do some stuff with the artist from Tank Girl). He had a project with Mike Patton called Lovage. He had a project with Prince Paul called Handsome Boy Modeling School. Definitely an interesting deep dive. Thanks guys!
"I got sunshine in a bag" is a line from the end of "the Good the Bad and the Ugly" where "blondie" (the Clint character) mentions that he has a saddlebag full of gold.
The best Clint Eastwood movie is High Plains Drifter. When a town is threatened by some gunslingers released from prison they hire Clint to protect them. He gets everything for free in exchange for teaching them how to defend the town, and makes them do all the work... In addition to literally painting the town red, with a sign that read "Welcome to Hell", haha! I love all his movies, but if I had to pick a favorite - High Plains Drifter.
They are a British band like most brits, we love music from all over world when black musicians come from the USA they are treated with respect rock ,blues, soul you name it we love working together look at most groups here .
My guess with the Clint Eastwood reference would be the intro. It has a erie western tone to it. And obviously, the real Clint Eastwood is well known for his old school westerns
Damon Albarn also sings in the group The Good, The Bad and The Queen. He made a live appearence in an MTV show with Snoop Dogg. First they play Pump Pump. Then Snoop introduces Damon Albarn as Kyle and he sings Clint Eastwood. Stoned out of his head with very small and closed eyes 😎
The whole song is built around a motif of the theme tune for the good, the bad and the ugly. That’s why it’s called clint Eastwood, he starred in that movie - there’s no other connection. Listen for the the melodica (keyboard you blow into). It’s playing the same motif as the intro vocal (the same phrase as the good the bad and the ugly theme)
The movie you are thinking of is the good the bad and the ugly it's not exactly the same as it but it sounded so similar they called the song Clint Eastwood

And after "Clint Eastwood" Gorillaz released the song "Dirty Harry". I assume they're just huge fans. And so am I. as far as the meaning of the title and the connection to Clint Eastwood goes there's really no other connection than the use of the title theme of his iconic movie "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly", not only in the beginning of the video but also in the melody the harmonica played. Gorillaz just have a strong interest in films, movies and pop culture in general which you can also see in their videos. This video here contains not only references to "The Good The Bad and the Ugly", but also to Peter Jackson's "Braindead", the music video of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and the "Resident Evil" video game. I recommend to check out the video of "Stylo". It's a mix of animated scenes and reality scenes and Bruce Willis is in it. You'll love it.
From what I've been told, the title and the quick stab from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly at the start, are to create a second line of meaning. The drug reference in the lyrics is pretty obvious, and is one layer of meaning in the lyrics. The other layer references _money,_ which in one of his movies (I think this one), Clint Eastwood called a bag of _gold_ "sunshine in a bag". This links it to the commercialization of music, the protest of which is kind of their overall theme _as a band._ With just the lyrics it'd be harder to make that mental jump, but with the title "Clint Eastwood" and the clue from the intro to point to that movie, people familiar with it would link it to that line, and voila, second line of meaning in a treasure hunt form. ;)
So I know you guys don't really do follow-ups to vids but I was looking forward to you guys analyzing the verses a little more, not just the chorus. Regardless, always excited for more!
Ignoring my lack of ambitions, all I ever really wanted to be sure to do was to shake Clint Eastwood's hand and thank him personally for all he contributed. I'd like to say ive seen them all, not excluding he himself.
i dont think they use different rappers, though i havent heard much from them but two suggestions are mastamind by deltron 3030, thats the dude doing the verses on here and the guy doing the chorus is the singer of blur which should also check out "Song #2"
In The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Clint's character refers to a bag of gold as sunshine in a bag or something... So it's not drugs when taken directly from the movie, but they could have taken that quote and flipped it.
On this track, they originally had some other rapper doing some generic bars, and Del was around one day and they asked him to do something to replace the original raps they had, gave him a summary of the idea of the band, and he just freestyled all that you hear on the song. In the characters' universe, the rappers are ghosts who possess the drummer, who were all his friends that died in a car accident or something. Overall their music is a blend of hip hop, alt rock, electronica, and pop.
Damon (2-D) the lead singer had a substance issue, he always said he was more creative when he was in his 'heroin' phase. He's from the 90s britpop era, most of them were on drugs, all different types, and a serious amount of them too.
Del is Ice Cube's cousin.. he's a dope 90s rapper. He was in the group Hieroglyphics. My favorite Gorillaz featured rapper was Andree 3000 "Do Ya Thing" .. they also have a track with De La Soul.
Del started Hieroglyphics with all his friends… Opio, Casual, Tajai, A-Plus, Phesto D and Pep Love. He never left Hieroglyphics because it’s HIS rap crew. Still together to this day.
"I ate happy, I'm feelin' glad. I got sunshine in a bag. I'm useless but not for long, my future is comin' on" to me always sounded like he was on some good LSD.

Deltron 3030 is a MUST listen. It's better listened to as a whole but there are some individual bangers on there.
Third for Deltron 3030, the song 3030 from that album is a disasterpiece of society that is proving to be quite prophetic given its context
Del also was a part of a group known as Heiroglyphics, their tune called Oakland blackouts is also 🔥

This whole album is out of this world.
Gorillaz Heeellz yeah!
Brings me back to high school
it's just the harmonica part that sounded like a Clint Eastwood spaghetti western song so they named it that
From what I've been told, the title and the quick stab from The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly at the start, are to create a second line of meaning.
The drug reference in the lyrics is pretty obvious, and is one layer of meaning in the lyrics.
The other layer references _money,_ which in one of his movies (I think this one), Clint Eastwood called a bag of _gold_ "sunshine in a bag". This links it to the commercialization of music, the protest of which is kind of their overall theme _as a band._
With just the lyrics it'd be harder to make that mental jump, but with the title "Clint Eastwood" and the clue from the intro to point to that movie, people familiar with it would link it to that line, and voila, second line of meaning in a treasure hunt form. ;)
Don't forget about Dangerous Danny Davis!
The ecstasy of gold is what you're looking for, from A Fistful Of Dollars, starring Clint Eastwood.
You guys really have to check out DELTRON 3030, so 🔥🔥
The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Greatest film of all time.
Loved this reaction, hugs from Sweden. Wooooaaawawa
There was a wrestler in the 80's with a referee turned wrester as well, "Dangerous" Danny Davis.
Hi guys! The movie was called “Fair Game” with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. Loved your reaction. 🙌🏼
So I know you guys don't really do follow-ups to vids but I was looking forward to you guys analyzing the verses a little more, not just the chorus. Regardless, always excited for more!
yeah especially the second verse which definitely has a meaning behind it. I feel like ive heard about the meaning but not 100% sure.
Ignoring my lack of ambitions, all I ever really wanted to be sure to do was to shake Clint Eastwood's hand and thank him personally for all he contributed. I'd like to say ive seen them all, not excluding he himself.
Pale Rider is my fav Clint Eastwood flick
Michal Douglas is 103. Love the reaction. Great job as usual guys.
i dont think they use different rappers, though i havent heard much from them but two suggestions are mastamind by deltron 3030, thats the dude doing the verses on here and the guy doing the chorus is the singer of blur which should also check out "Song #2"
Song 2 is a little overrated and overdone. I don't see anyone reacting to Girls and Boys, Parklife, Coffee and TV, The Universal...
In The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly Clint's character refers to a bag of gold as sunshine in a bag or something... So it's not drugs when taken directly from the movie, but they could have taken that quote and flipped it.
Such a vibe tune.
Just found your channel guys ,you two guys and your reactions are fabulous seriously fabulous.👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💎💎💎
I remember buying the original Gorillaz album the day it released. I've been a fan ever since.
An old favorite. thank you
Clint is in his 90's and he was always in shape. I seriously doubt he ever had a drug problem. Cmon boys.
Thats DEL!!! The greatest rapper you've slept on!
Del the Funky Homosapien is a MASTER of the art!!!
I think he’s the greatest of all time.
Great reaction guys, Gorillaz got some awesome shit for the time
Damon (2-D) the lead singer had a substance issue, he always said he was more creative when he was in his 'heroin' phase. He's from the 90s britpop era, most of them were on drugs, all different types, and a serious amount of them too.
One of my favorite Gorillaz songs that hardly anyone has head is Hong Kong. Give that one a listen
You guys forgot about Betty White. Lol. She's up there
Del is great. I highly recommend the albums “Attractive Sin”, and “Both Sides of the Brain”.
Hieroglyphics 3rd Eye Vision as well.
"I ate happy, I'm feelin' glad. I got sunshine in a bag. I'm useless but not for long, my future is comin' on" to me always sounded like he was on some good LSD.
They collaborate with Mike Patton (of Faith No More) for a band called Loveage. Pretty awesome
Next song I'd recommend is either "Melenchoky Hill" or "Saturn Barz". Both are LIT!
I feel like I’m back in high school watching music videos on FUZE before catching the bus. 🎶💕🦋
(Clint Eastwood says to the bounty hunter in outlaw) “dyin ain’t much of a livin boy”🤣😄
