Oh that thumbnail is so disturbing. I am familiar with both Hank and Joe’s work and faces, but I’d never noted the resemblance. But now I’m never going to unsee it.
Right? I just noticed they look similar, it's just the chin and front of the hair that kinda gives it up but i wonder what would happen of Joe walked in Hank's house.
I'm gonna take a bold step and say that not only will the winner be a tall male-presenting glasses-wearer, he will also be a blonde science communicator!
Their actual second guest canceled at the last minute, so rather than postpone the shoot, they just had Hank do the whole thing twice from opposite sides and edited them together.
I was just popping over to the comments to express my joy at that phrase! 💗I'm nonbinary, and have never heard that opening greeting before. I absolutely love it!
Same. I was surprised seeing them side by side. It'd be so funny if they dressed alike and then walked around to see if strangers asked them if they were twins. X) (I know they're both too busy for such silliness though.)
Am I the only person who finds it bothersome when scientists describe animal mimicry and behavior like it's consciously? Like, baby birds don't grow in such a way because they know there's a toxic caterpillar in the area and weaving in such a way will mimic that. They aren't thinking "I will act like that bug over there!" It's just a evolutionary quirk that happens. Walking sticks don't consciously grow a stick shaped body to look like a stick any more than I purposely, and consciously grow brown hair or produce skin cells with little melanin. I will concede that the octopus is probably smart enough to be consciously aware of what it's doing in its mimicry.
There is a general failure in media to correctly depict evolutionary action, even by those who understand. In simple terms, random genetic mutations (may or may not) have a (positive or negative) effect (if any) on survival of those possessing the new expressed trait(s). Environmental conditions also change randomly and abruptly, causing positive traits to lose value while enhancing the value of previously less desirable traits. In this case, slightly orange, slightly fuzzy chicks lasted slightly better and evolution drove the appearance and behavior of the chicks to increasingly mimic something very distasteful to eat. The main ingredient for these astounding but rather common transformations is time, plenty of time. Remember, we only just arrived here ourselves.
@@samarnadra It's more likely to be instinct that the spider puts it's legs up to look like antennae than genuine thought to try and look even more like an ant but I do believe that animals which hunt have a larger capacity for thought, even rudimentary thought, than other animals. It's just a pet peeve of mine to hear people describe passive things in an active way. Which is how I really should have worded my original post. To go back to my skin analogy if I get freckles, I'm not active making them, they just appeared on me cause of time spent outside in the sun. It's a mechanism my body is doing on its own, but if I were in a nature documentary you might hear Attenborough speaking saying like - "Her skin is not adapted for her climate this close to the equator. The sun's harmful UV rays are dangerous and can cause harmful, even deadly repercussions, but she has a trick up her sleeve... To protect her skin from the sun she will change the pigments in her skin. She will increase the production of melanin and develop spots upon her skin which will protect her from the sun. It's not a perfect defense, but it's better than nothing."
They have a similar style, but don’t actually look alike. Honestly, I’m getting more of a Kevin Bacon vibe from Joe, even down to his vocal characteristics.
They look different, Joe has a bigger, more defined chin and longer face than Hank. Hank has bigger ears and slightly larger nose than Joe. Joe has different shaped eyes/eyelids compared to Hank (Hank's more rounded, Joe's more hooded). Hank also has bigger incisors, whereas Joe's incisors' sizes are more inline with the rest of his teeth. Their similarities are both wears glasses, both have similar lips, similar complexion and skin colour, similar hair and both are white males of a similar age.
About that jawfish... Although it's documented as opportunistic right now, the jawfish's technique of using the octopus's coloring as cover might turn into some sort of preferential adaptation down the road... particularly if certain jawfish colorations look more like the octopus than others. This might be a good example of how at least one process of evolution by natural selection begins.
