In this video I'll show you an amazing (and inexpensive) alternative to table top rivet setters. This is one of my favorite tools in my sewing studio and I'm willing to bet you'll be considering adding one to your space before this video is complete!
I'm not the first person to film an arbor press tutorial. In fact, I learned a ton by watching Geordie Leather on UA-cam. However, I do have a few different methods I think may be helpful and thought it would be worthwhile to film a tutorial of my own to share with you.

I was shopping a rivet press when I encountered this video. I realized I'd bought an arbor press years ago for purposes of quickly softening/conditioning polymer clay. But it had been sitting unused until this fabulous tutorial gave it new life. I've got the rivet and grommet hand tools, so all I need now is the magnet, and it's already inbound! Thank you so very much for saving me money, and allowing me to repurpose a rather monstrous tool :).

Wondering if HF has any idea why so many petite ladies are grabbing all of their 1/2 ton presses? 😂
Well they have now stopped selling them! We sold them out!
I have those hollow hole punches. They work for the most part, but I make leather crafts, so they eventually separate, the weld breaks, and then when you're cutting a circle, it cuts 99% but leaves a gap, and then you have to cut with a knife. Better to spend the money on higher quality hole punches when you can afford them. That's my problem, I got most of my initial tools on Amazon.
FYI, you need to get a metal plate to put under your plastic piece under the arbor press. That will stop the plastic from bowing, and make it easier to cut holes. I'm sure you've figured all this out, now going on two years. And I also use the rectangular magnets on the arbor press to hold the plastic cutting board down so it doesn't move much.
EXCELLENT!!! Thank you, this has been very useful. I'm getting ready to purchase a press, but found it daunting the cost of the dyes and the machine (and the screwing the top every time you wanted to change). Sure the instructor recommend having two, but this is so much more convenient and I don't have to think too much on the type of rivets, snaps to use.

Just ran into this video today. This appears to be less restrictive than what the overall bag makers are using. Theirs have a small throat clearance, which they all struggle with, whereas, this has far more clearance space. I was getting ready to order a kampress with minimal dies until I saw this video….so this was really handy. I would have liked to have seen purse magnets used…..

I think that’s great! Just a little heads up maybe putting something directly in the middle so when the press comes down your your white plate doesn’t flex three stacks of pallet. Wood works very well. You could even make a gig for the outside in the middle!! For leather clickerdye

I So appreciate this demonstration and different options for hardware installation! It's definitely a great idea for those of us who have invested in hand tools and would like to use what we have and not waste the money invested in them by switching to a Kam press. I bought the Arbor Press a few weeks and haven’t used it because I was a little afraid of it 😂. I’ve never set a rivet in my life. So today I made myself try it and it worked perfectly!! Thank you so much for making this video. It’s the only video I’ve found on the Arbor Press that doesn’t make it sound like you have to make a major adaptation to use it for this purpose. Hi! For the key fobs I use the pliers. The press is much stronger than you think it is and it can damage the key fob if you aren’t careful. Also, it can be awkward to keep the fob in place.

This was a fun tutorial. It reminded me why I bought the arbor press instead of the hand-press. The ability to quick-change tools is really invaluable.
I've not seen the press used with just a magnet before - I've drilled a hole in one of the ends, shoved a magnet inside, then slot the tool into the hole. That provides more space to work and a little more stability. But not everyone has a drill press, so the larger magnet is a great alternative!
If I may offer a suggestion based on personal experience working with the paper dies... put a piece of wood over the die (I have a leftover 1 x 4 cut into a square). That will even-out the pressure to ensure a good impression without worrying about the die sticking to the ram.

Thank you for this! I bought an arbor press a few weeks ago and have been experimenting with different things. Rivets are no problem, but I can’t get the hole cutters or grommets to work. I am applying all the pressure I can and it just isn’t working. Your video looks like you’re just pressing a little. I wonder if I’m doing something wrong?

I'd be afraid of magnet exploding, they usually have a more ceramic like consistency....
Definitely something to consider when using it for heavy-duty projects. So far I’ve not had an issue and I’ve at times out all my oomph into that handle!
Extremely low volume, raised the speakers volume , raised the computer volume all the way, still can barely hear👎👎
I apologize for that. I was still learning how to make videos. If you’re using earbuds or headphones you may need to override the safety volume. For some reason many people can adjust their volume and others cannot. The closed captioning may help.

Yay!!!! If they don’t have one at your store you can also get the half ton version at Amazon. Fingers crossed you find one! They also have a nicer finish on them now than when I bought mine.
I like the uses but you are using that rod 100 percent wrong. Needs to be extended to where it's going towards you when pressing down and also adjusted to where it is going at a slight down angle
I like where I have it because it balances nicely and defaults to an up position instead of falling down. They make it adjustable so everyone switch it up to their preference.
If arbor press is secured, you can pull the handle completely to one side and get a lot more leverage

Absolutely! I know of several people who have done it. Just use a really good degreaser first since there can be a protective layer on it. The ram and lever come out easily and it will be a quick process.
What about #4 or 1/2" self piercing grommets?
Any hardware you set with a hammer/hand press will work!
I have rheumatoid, so the Kam table press and hand held presses were difficult to use. I love the way you have converted the arbor press. I sew garments, and use snaps and rivets alot. I don't know if you have seen them, but there is a seller on etsy selling an adapter for the ram that will hold the dies for Kam, gold star dies and then she has a press plate that can handle all the different die sizes. I think they will make things easier for me to do garments as the alignment is all taken care of. I am just thrilled to have found your videos and that seller with the adapters. I was having to press way to hard with the Kam table press. Also, my top dies were getting frozen into the press. I had to use vise grips last time to get them out and it was almost impossible. I was looking for a better option.
It means so very much to me that this video might help you create beautiful things with less pain and more accessibility. If you need to, you can also add a length of pipe to the handle for even more leverage - or perhaps even a pipe with a bend for using your forearm to press down on days when your hands hurt more than others.
That is a great idea. I also believe I can use the press to make covered buttons easier. I can easily get the die for those and not have to have a separate press. I have even seen die for hooks and eyes for trousers.@@CharmingCheek

And I love how this can do so many things that you have so kindly demonstrated. Your barely auditable you should speak louder or put the Microphone closer
Hi! I am sorry you’re not able to hear it well. Since recording this I’ve worked to improve the audio. What I learned is that some folks can hear it and others cannot (based on their speaker settings together with the sound volume on my end). If you’re using headphones you may need to bypass the volume safety settings to increase the volume output. If that doesn’t work, the closed captioning can help. Unfortunately there’s no other fix now that the video is already uploaded.

Hi! This UA-cam creating stuff is tough! The audio is definitely something I struggle to perfect. Are you listening with headphones? Something I’ve learned is that you may need to turn the safety setting off so the volume can be more loud. I think I’ve got the audio figured out in my later videos (fingers crossed).

This video inspired me. My "tool guy" husband has an extensive workshop. He doesn't have an arbor press but he does have a drill press. It works in a similar way to the arbor press....so much better than using a hammer and I didn't have to buy a diffent tool. I just have to dust the drill press before setting rivets. :)

Hi there! This is one of the issues I’ve tried to improve on my newer videos. Unfortunately I can’t fix the audio on this video. Were you using headphones by any chance? I’ve discovered that if you have a safety limit on them you have to turn it off for this video so that the volume will go up high enough.

The Harbor Freight stores near me are out of this, but it's on my shopping list. The tools are all in full view, not special dies to purchase. Excellent. I hesitate to do snaps (plastic and the spring snap) because there is so much out of view and no way to see when things are out of alignment....wasting snaps, grommets, rivets, etc. And punching holes is always a nightmare of noise and fiddling spending inordinate amounts of time on just one hole.

There are some good options on Amazon - I’ve heard the 1/2 ton work well. And I do have a way to apply the plastic snaps with this - there’s a video in the tools playlist!

You may need to rerecord this video and turn up your volume on your recording device or speak louder. :( I have my volume on my computer turned all the way up, my volume on my headset control, and the volume here on UA-cam, and can barely hear you
Thank you for sharing your experience! Audio is my biggest nemesis. It’s odd because some people can hear it fine (I’ve tested it from various locations and devices) and other people can’t hear it at all.
I just took a class last week and have some new equipment coming. I hope to get this nailed down once and for all so everyone has the same experience - and it’s pleasant for all.
In the meanwhile, closed captions may help. I’m so sorry I don’t have a better fix.
Well you just solved months & months of questions I’ve had about other machines. Most were too expensive by the time I would have to buy die after die, specialized parts & rivets, etc! Or others that wouldn’t do everything I needed it to do. I’ve researched & watched videos til I’m exhausted from it. Then your video came up! WHAT A BLESSING! Hard to hear even with my volume high
I’m so sorry about that! I did this video when I was still learning about volume levels. If you’re using headphones you may want to remove any sound level limits so you can override them and turn the volume higher. I’ve also added closed captioning to help. Unfortunately I’m unable to adjust volume for an existing video.
Hi. Thanks for this great tutorial. I'll be going get one from Harbor Freight soon. i do have a question. I've seen that KAMsnaps has a flat die set for setting keyfob hardware. What would you suggest for setting the keyfob hardware. I've tried looking but have come up blank. Thanks!

First time viewer and definitely a subscriber now.. I already had the same exact arbor press from harbor freight.. I was actually just looking at different rivet press videos and found your video.. I was a bit discouraged with all the different dies that I would have to purchase just to do the different rivets, grommets, etc.. This made life a lot easier and a heck of a lot cheaper. One way to secure the press is with a piece of plywood a little bit wider than the press but about 2x longer. Bolt it onto the plywood for a more stable surface. I did this with my heavy metal button presses, and a large overhead metal press. The result is that they’re now very stable but can still be moved.
Now that’s a great idea! Give it a wider base to prevent tipping! Thanks for sharing!

did you get the sizzix pads from the link you posted doesn't look as thick as yours when I look it up
Hi! For some reason my comment never posted and I apologize it took so long to get back to you.
I used a tiny little chopping mat thinner than my Sizzix and it worked well, too. But, I had bought it at TJ Maxx and I couldn’t find a similar option to recommend online. From the description on Sizzix, it appears these are the same thickness (the machine won’t work properly if they aren’t). But even if it is thinner it will still work well.
Great video! I’m also envious of your Husky work bench. I have looked at them long and hard for my studio.
Harbor Freight has a similar item but when I went to purchase they were out of stock. They were more reasonably priced than the Husky but this is definitely a forever purchase.

@Charming Cheek - can the Arborpress be used for snaps for regular garments made of normal (not heavy duty) fabrics also? Or is it best for vinyl and leather?
Hi! It works just as well on quilt cotton and cotton Lycra. I’ve used it to install grommets in cotton woven material and shirt snaps (when I was experimenting) into scraps of cotton.

Hi - Love the video and potential with the press. I am practicing with 9mm X 8mm double capped rivets from Emmaline Bag. These have a longer post. I have put the rivets in a 6-layer piece of vinyl. The vinyl is fairly thin. But, I have not had a successful straight installation. It slips sideways every time. I haven’t tried smaller rivets yet because I don’t have any right now. I will try them though. Can you help me to figure out what is wrong? I am using the Dritz 750 anvil and post. Thank you!
I have had this trouble when the post was too long for my fabric. Ideally, you want the post to just peek from the depth of your fabric.
What about trying to snip the end of the post? Push it through the hole, use a marking pen on the post level with the fabric.
Then cut just above your line (toward the tip) to make it a tad longer.
May be better to sacrifice one rivet with this experiment than a few more trying to get them to go in straight?
Another experiment is to flip it over so your anvil is opposite of your current technique. If you’re usually putting the post setter over the cap end, try putting it over the post end.

I’m sorry! The audio issue is definitely my biggest hurdle in learning how to do this.
It’s strange because on my televisions and computer it gets too loud - but some people have the opposite experience.
One option (until I can get it worked out) is to turn on closed captioning.

I also been using hand tools and bought a large Anvil at Harbor Freight after purchasing the plier sets at Joanns with severe carpal tunnel and pinched nerves in both hands I'm not strong enough to use grrr ya my hubby was not a fan of me setting rivets etc and swearing lol

Wow … thank you. Didn’t know there was an alternative. I have a sewing box full of rivet and snap sets (some inherited from my mum) with setting tools that I’ve long forgotten how to use. But the older me thinks something like this is a great way to use pretty well any sets whereas the bench top press I have needs specific screw in die sets that aren’t cheap. Now just have to work out the least expensive way to get it shipped to me. Thank you from Australia.
I’m so happy you will be able to use items from your mum! Are there industrial stores or suppliers with inventory on hand in Australia? Perhaps inquire with a metal machine shop to see where they get their tools??? I cannot believe the cost of shipping to your corner of the globe.

Thank you so much for sharing. We have been looking into buying a snap press. We have just started making some purses and billfolds. With the coast of investing in the leather, vinyl, and hardware we hated to spend more money’s a press right now. Then you would need the attachments. We will be heading to harbor freight to pick one of these up this week.

How much clearance do u need to use the hole punch etc the one I am looking at 1/4 ton and has 4.5 inch clearance is that large enough??
Hmmmmmm I’m not sure if that would be enough. But - if you bolt this in place and then have the ram slide down through the gaps in the metal plate, you’d be able to get enough clearance.
Mine has 5.5” clearance and at times I’ve needed 5”.

Do you remember how you cleaned it when you first got it and it was covered with grease? I’m reading recommendations to use kerosene or we-40 but I don’t want my craft room to smell like that. I’m so excited to start using it! Thank you so much for this video.
I think I actually used a damp rag with Dawn dish soap and then kept wiping it down with a rag with fresh water. Dried it well before putting it into use

@@Statch011 I’m a klutz and would get burned! I really just gave it a good once over and it’s been fine. I’d say if you’re spending more than 10 minutes it’s overkill.
