    Canon is well known for it's wide variety of very high quality glass that is reliable, well-built and holds its value. The EF-S 15-mm f/2.8 is no exception to that. It is far and beyond the highest quality piece of glass in the EF-S line and it stands up very closely to the iconic EF L series glass that we all know and love.
    This review takes you through the features of the lens, our experience with it and some samples of both photo and video to show you what this lens is capable of.

    Would you recommend this as a replacement for the kit lens that comes with the rebel7?

    will this work on a canon r10? Concerned about being stuck at 4k when recording or crop. Those are just some of the stuff ive seen.

    I currently have a canon 700d and I think it might be worth the investment. I already have a sigma 18-250mm but it’s a pretty dark lens at f3.5-6.3 and the images you get are almost always soft unless you use it at the lower focal lengths. The constant fast aperture is quite attractive considering the poor low light performance on my camera. If I ever decide to upgrade to something like the m50 mkii I can always just use it with an adapter so I don’t have to invest in more lenses. I can find 17-55mm used for under $300 but my main concern is that the stabilisation system might be a bit janky, as the OS failing overtime seems to be a well known issue.

      @harrison00xXx Рік тому

      I used a 17-55 for nearly 10 years without any issue, sold it as i upgraded to full frame.
      But since i got back to APS-C not long ago, i bought a 17-55 again and well i think this optic is even sharper than the one i had before.
      The real issue with this lens is not the stabilizer breaking... its more the overall build quality leading to the most dusty lens i ever owned and a very very plasticy and cheap feeling to it (as expected by EF-S lenses). The biggest pros of this lens are the pretty good glass, nearly L-quality, a proper ring USM and somewhat very good stabilization (especially on a R-body with IBIS!)

    Hey kyle!
    Does the 17-55 lose light in f stops as it zooms into 55mm?

    isn't the EF-S line made specifically for aps-c cameras, so there is no crop factor to apply when you put this lens on an aps-c camera such as the canon sl2 for example?

    • @KH_the_filmmaker
      @KH_the_filmmaker  Рік тому +5

      Yes the ef-s line is made for aps-c cameras but that doesn’t mean you don’t still apply the crop factor. The focal range of the lens doesn’t change based on whether it’s made for aps-c or full frame. It is a constant value based on the field of view the lens provides regardless of if it’s attached to a camera or not. It’s the sensor that alters that field of view, which is why it still has a crop factor applied 👍 Hope that helps!

    Would be cool if you guys mentioned things like manual focus in terms of the throw (degree of turn). Looking to pick one up to supplement my Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 but can't seem to find detailed info on how it manual focuses. I personally don't use AF unless I'm taking selfie shots/vlogging type of shots.
    In 2022 it doesn't make sense to buy brand new though, considering there are many modern f/2.8 zooms for mirrorless at that price. Definitely recommend people to check out ebay or something.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Рік тому

      DONT buy this lens if you own a Sigma 18-35, unless you really NEED the 35-55mm range at F2.8.
      I would rather use the Sigma at F1.8 and crop in post to make it look like the 17-55 2.8.

    Some cons:
    1. Too costly
    2. Filter size of 77mm means cannot use the camera built-in flash anymore
    3. NOT even graded a L(luxury) lens by Canon
    4. Only has 7 blades diaphragm so round bokeh will appear heptagonal?

      Im not sure... but isnt there a EF-M speedbooster/Adapter for EF lenses?
      I would rather pick a proper 16-35 2.8 USM lens and make it also 16-35 with a speedbooster. You will miss stabilizer in the lens, but you would also miss the stabilizer if it breaks which is a common problem on these old "pro" grade APS-C lenses. With the speedbooster you get even effective F2 light gathering from a F2.8 full frame lens!
      I had a 16-35 2.8 full frame (on full frame) and also already 2 17-55 2.8 APS-C lenses. I enjoy the 17-55 on APS-C again, but if i would still have the FF camera i would not even think about the 17-55... as universal its usable, its too problematic (dust, stabilizer reliability, build quality,....) and you better get a very good, cheap deal otherwise you risk a lot of money for "garbage".
      I must say... my first 17-55 i had for nearly 10 years, i was SUPER HAPPY with it, the 2nd one now i have just since some weeks - i will pray it last forever or just dies within a year since i have 1 year warranty from the shop. I mean im anyways looking for a Sigma 18-35 1.8 since i dont really trust an old lens that much anymore, still it can be a good purchase since there is not really anything else for APS-C in this focal range.

    Will this lens work with the R7

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx Рік тому +2

      even very good. IBIS and OIS of the lens work pretty nice together. Not so nice for vlogging while walking at 17mm (wobbly sh*t), but super useful for anything else.
      Just keep in mind its very front heavy, its zoom is creeping easily (especially if it was used more already, stiff at new ones, very easy to use as smooth push/pull zoom later)
      I had a 17-55 for nearly 10 years on a 400D and later on a 550D, then i had full frame for a while, now im back at APS-C with the R7 and so i needed to buy this lens again.
      Just something to keep in mind.... try to use always/"only" the center of the frame for your subjects at F2.8, otherwise you end up with very annoying CA in the corners at wide setting up to about 25-30mm and probably even at the subject (close to the corner) you want to be sharp.
      The 32MP of the R7 are somewhat overwhelming for this old optics, but center is tack sharp wide open and at F4 or 5.6 its even competing with super sharp primes (in the corners)
      You can very easily feel the priorities of this lens..... good zoom range, F2.8 and somewhat "good" IQ for its capabilities and size, meanwhile canon gave a total sh*t about haptics, dust protection and build quality/reliability in overall as many EF-S users will know.

    Canon17-55 very pricey....Sigma 17-50 f2.8 better VFM undoubtedly.......Imagae quality and overall performance sigma18-35 wins hands down....

      100% agree, my issue with sigma lenses on Canon’s is that the auto focus performance tends to be quite poor. I love sigma lenses, especially on Sony’s because the auto focus works flawlessly. You really can’t beat sigma when it comes to price and image quality, their lenses are incredible!

      18-35 has such a small range that I would rather just use my primes. For me the point of a zoom is a lens that eliminates carrying a second lens. Also 18mm is just not wide enough. 17 mm is borderline and I honestly love 15mm on the wide end.

      @@anasramadan953 For photos it doesn't matter. All are good. I prefer Sigma because many Canon DSLRs have very poor dynamic range so the extra light helps. Also gives better bokeh.
      For video Sigma 18-35 is almost industry standard entry lens with good autofocus on Canon bodies and good manual focus capability due to the somewhat decent focus throw. Using a follow focus, I can remap the throw to almost 360 degrees. Though the 17-55 has extra range but f/2.8 may not always be enough light. Different trade-offs.
