"Britain is the Hood" Damned straight. Britain has a lot of problems that are brushed under the rug. Also: the UK is an island. A lot of the seaside resorts established in the early 1900's are boom and bust economically based on the season. Brighton, Ren's home town, being one of them.
Facts bro, I'm from Hastings which looks nice in pictures and people from London love to come down for the weekend. But it's an absolute shit hole lol😅 don't get me wrong, I do love the place, just the amount of drug addiction and poverty is unreal. Same with every single seaside town I've been too tbh.
This is originally a song done by verve. Which is where the "beat" comes from. A band member of the verve loved rens re-imagined version of their song so much. He sent ren a band played guitar. This is like a british anthem for them. Also "she sells sea shells down by the sea shore" is a double. Because shell oil started off with the founder owning an antique shop. Then made millions on collecting sea shells and decorating them. Selling them for hundreds. He thrn baught oil claims. Thats the story of shell oil
He had to quit for the treatment but said he'll stay off because of the vocal benefits. Glad the wellbutrin worked for him. Did absolutely nothing for me.
The reason this song resonated so much with me is it managee to capture exactly what Britain was like for me growing up in my teens in the 90s. Britain is not the same as whats portrayed in America. Britain is a pretty rough place. I used to witness at least 3 street fights every saturday night when i used to go out clubbing, popping extasy, getting drunk getting into fights or avoiding fights then getting home at 3am and snoking pot till 5am then crawling up the shop as soon as it opened to buy a pack of fags, paasing out till 11am then making a full english breakfast to chase away the demons.
It’s interesting the way you’re hearing Ren get “off beat” or “flooded” When the drums kick in. Had you heard Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve before you heard this song? Only ask because I wonder if being familiar with the track eases that tension you’re hearing.
I was confused by that comment as Ren is very clearly on beat. But I guess its not a typical Hip-Hop beat so I can see why some people may misinterpret it as being off-beat.
@@RebornLevelleragreed. I’ve spent enough hours listening to playback in recordings and a fair few on stage. Ren is definitely not ‘off beat’. I think it sometimes throws US hip hop fans/artists because Ren will rap over anything. It might not be what you’re used to, but it is definitely not off beat.
It's interesting that you thought Ren was off-beat. He's actually perfectly on-beat, so I was trying to work out what you meant. But then I noticed that you were moving to the music completely off-beat, which I think is because you're interpreting the "on" beat as the early snare drum hit, when the part to be on-beat with is the second snare-drum hit. But it's not a typical Hip-Hop beat so I can see how it could be interpreted as off-beat or flooded.
Ren is a real one, he loved reactors ❤ also, he quit smoking before he went into his treatment in Canada I think. Love music part 4 dropping today btw! LFG
I've said this on other reactions to this one... but it's crazy how Ren makes me nostalgic for a place I've never been... this just hits a little different.
The music comes from a 1965 version of a Rolling Stones Song "The Last Time" by the Andrew Oldham Orchestra, but was used by the Verve for Bittersweet Symphony, and now Ren. Both very different, but both great songs.
@@TwistedSisler If you listen to the Andrew Oldham Orchestra instrumental all the way through you'll hear it's nigh on identical musically. What's interesting is how Richard Ashcroft and Ren made it entirely into their own thing.
Wish you understood UK culture better because i really do like your reactions, you just have no idea how we live here😊 you should come visit sometimes and experience it yourself
@@ticklemetrout9625 i didn't mean just this video, it's in every video he does of Ren he judges over British way of life from an American background obviously because he's American, so a visit would help him greatly. The language, the references to English culture Ren makes, the clothes, hairstyle, ways of life, Ren is so British😅 but in this song in particular his "is Britain the hood"🤣
What I like about it is it perfectly captures the experience of walking through any British Town centre. I'm from further up north but this could have been filmed in my city and it wouldn't have changed the atmosphere one bit
This beat isn't Rens and it wasn't made for this, this was all just to pay homage to the Verve. You're hearing someone rap over an undoctored soundtrack of 'Bittersweet Symphony'. Ol dude from the Verve sent him one of his legendary guitars cause he liked this so much. And bro why are you ducking Chinchilla? 😂 React to that Little Girl Gone, I wanna see you try to attempt to not throw shit while thats bumping. 😂
I actually really like how you said “an alone song” and sometimes I do really feel that’s true about a lot of Ren’s music, but they’re also some fun bangers too.
Really thoughtful breakdown while be wildly entertaining. In regards to what space this would be played in, the original Bittersweet Symphony was a massive pop radio hit. I'm not sure Ren really gives who and where it would be played much thought.
As an American that has lived in Brighton (where this video was shot) for the past 14 years. Yes, a good portion of the UK is "hood". People hardly make any money working their jobs while prices go up. It was way different in 2009.
There is a long working class tradition in british society. This song is Ren's ode to that. British working class is like american factory worker , coal miner , "salt of the earth" types with more drinking. You should check out the artist Plan B on a track called "Ill Manors" .
This isn't a released track by the way. All of Ren's "retakes" are just him having a bit of fun paying homage to his favourite tracks and influences. He hasn't, and probably can't, monetise them. They're just for a bit of fun and so he has stuff to drop whilst he's working on his own projects
Clearly he has deep love for it there. In Power, he talks about being on The Dole (welfare) and living in a Council House (the PJs). But he finds his "Power" there.
This is brilliant! Britain the beautiful and the ugly! an honest but loving track. It always amazes me how Americans think they are the only ones that suffer you are so self absorbed.
10:15 Yeah man! It is. And in some places in Europe its even worse. I relate to Ren, as I was also a joung guy trying to find a home in a fudged city. Its almost impossible not to go down the bad roads he mentions. But if you dont, you will become a victim.
I am a former schoolteacher, and I agree with you that Schools currently don't do a very good job of teaching critical thinking. It is getting better, common core mathematics is an example of that where children are taught to attack a problem in various ways. This allows for better critical thinking and application of the concepts. But you are right, cramming information doesn't grow intelligence. In fact, it suppresses it. Love this reaction, really. I also love that you speak your mind, even though I don't always agree with you. 🙏❤️
It's a different hood, but all streets have something to say. Not the same things but they talk the same way. If you know your own you can recognize others.
This society can be traced back at least 2000 years to when we were conquered by the Romans (they loved a good party, drink and eat till they were full then vomit it up so they could carry on). We have also had the Anglo-Saxons and then the Vikings. You know what they did a lot off, drinking and fighting. The we had the Normans who loved nothing more than riding around on horses jousting and drinking. Drinking and partying is cultural. Its in our DNA.
It's ironic that the song Bittersweet Symphony rose to fame when used in the last scene of the movie Cruel Intentions, which was set in a family of great generational wealth. And this song leans heavily to the UK poor.
It’s an interesting commentary to me on the binge drink and drug use cultures in the UK and Ireland. Most nights turn into that early morning stumble through the city being all nostalgic about shit. Now I’m grown out of that phase and reflecting, I know that it’s not necessarily a good way to live your life, and lots of boys get lost along the way. But there’s always a part that fuckin misses that chaos of the session
"Libbies at the Doleys" a Doley is basically a welfare office and the libbies term could be debated, I'm from the south coast where Ren gets most of his slang from and around my way a Libbie is a pretty chick who's a more of a girly girl then a boss bitch.
Really like your personality, your song break-downs, allusions and interconnections your brain produces ... cool stuff ... It would ALSO be cool to see you react to Plan B "Ill Manors" (the dude Ren references in Hi Ren alongside Eminem).
They can drink in the UK, but...Wisconsin USA cant even be included on national drinking studies because we make the while country look guilty of drinking in excess.
