@@MarkLord-ft7mg Apparently I can't post a link here to the video on @RenMakesMusic. Just Google "Ren Got gifted a guitar by the bass player of The Verve! Legend"
The Verve were huge in UK, Europe and elsewhere. More than a one hit wonder, I guess they didn’t make inroads in the States. Richard Ashcroft is a genius song writer 👌 Only a couple of years ago did he get back the rights to the song that put them on the map because of that sample that the stones ripped off themselves. And by the way Ren sums up the UK beautifully in this, he smashed it out the park.
You noticed the drunks falling, and the mother with the baby matching his lyrics but you missed where he said " here in the city we glow" as he steps out of the shade amd into the sun. The whole video is impeccable, but this part had me mesmerised
It's such an iconic track that I wouldn't ever have thought anyone could rap over, yet he did! The way he stops at the drain cover for the "funeral" too is just perfect. He is so good at using urban spaces in his storytelling.
Yep, i think this is one of his cleverest one takes, its full of perfect timing, My Favorite is when he says "in the city we glow" as he walks into the sunshine, that perfect shot would only be possible for a small time window each day, so dedicated to his craft...
@@ian9033 I love that shot! It is all so well timed. Not sure if it counts as a oner though because of the cuts when he is stepping in and out of the pavement cracks. Was filmed when the light was different and they flip between the two. But that takes nothing at all away from how difficult the timing must have been for all the complicated continuous shots. Each moving part is a place it could have gone wrong! I love that videos like this one were part of the foundations for what he ultimately did with MG3. Practice, playing with ideas, learning by doing.
Thanks. Just a great song. And I love you guys. ❤ The bassplayer of The Verve gifted Ren a Guitar because he liked his cover so much.🎸 And another small detail from the background: If you look closely at the beginning, you can see that he is lighting up his cigarette in front of the Cancer Research UK store. 😀
You know by now that Ren never leaves anything to chance. Everything is maticularly planned out. Every step, every move of the camera, every extra in the video.- I love this piece because his Welsh/British accent makes it so real. Thanks guys.
I follow a lot of Welsh content creators (Kaiff, Sam, and the rest of the SR bunch) so when Ren hits a particularly Welsh sound for emphasis it tickles my ears.
Fun fact I grew up in the same house as richard ashcroft the lead singer of the verve as when he moved out after the music started to take of my parents bought the house
Great reaction 😂. Ren is dropping his acoustic version of Troubles tomorrow. I suggest that for your next one. (Ren quit smoking when he got to Canada but still struggles when he visits the UK).
As usual it was a great pleasure watching you guys react to Ren. Ren's version is not just a "retake" of the song, it is also a "retake" of the Verve's video that went with it. Double bubble! and well worth a watch.
Wednesday is not complete without a Ren reaction from you guys! I love how this song rolls along, my favourite line is “Bare with me” as in baring our souls here, instead of the usual “bear with me”. Such a clever little twist.
Guys, I can't believe you are just getting to this. And you know what? I totally love it. Gives me an excuse to revisit/relisten to a reaction. A few items to note. He stops and bows his head with the lyrics "His mother's in a black suit, crying at a funeral". If you look at the pavement where he stops the pavement looks like a grave. He twice uses "As above, so below" in the lyrics. The phrase is not random. It has it's own Wikipedia page which states among other things "Among historians of philosophy and science, the verse is often understood as a reference to the supposed effects of celestial mechanics upon terrestrial events. This would include the effects of the Sun upon the change of seasons, or those of the Moon upon the tides, but also more elaborate astrological effects." It's interesting to note that the first time he uses the phrase as he literally steps into the rising morning sunlight (celestial mechanics) and says "here in the city we glow" (terrestrial event).
fun fact rens apartment is right above that KFC but like adjacent. the roof is featured in murderer bongo bongo, and loosing it the place he fast raps beast mode. The inside of his apartment shows up in a number of videos. I think they were all roommates. illist of our time was shot across the street. most other sites are within five miles
And a literal five minute walk from where the outdoor busking sets were filmed. Brighton may be a city, but all those spots are all within a very short area. It's fun watching the videos and trying to see exactly where each one was filmed. From the Laines, to the sea front, to the waste ground by the Marina, to the shots in Churchill Square - It's such a visual city.

Loved this 😁 couple of British explanations: "Juxtaposition to those out on the lash" - lash means a heavy night out on the beers etc. "feel the factor 10 tremor" - we moan about the shite weather (rain, cold, wind) but the moment it gets to 25c (77 f) we get the suncream out - aka the factor 10 suncream This modern take on Bittersweet Symphony is epic, and accurate 😍
What I really love about this is that it's only a cover in the sense that it takes the background music and the trope of walking along the street in the video as the two standout elements of the original Verve track. Everything else is new. But even the walking along the street thing is different, because in the original, Richard Ashcroft bumps into people deliberately in a sort of slightly aggressive way, and the people he bumps into act as if they're genuinely pissed off. Whereas here, Ren has a much more uplifting stroll where he's observing and celebrating life while still recognising the challenges we face. It's as if Ren has completely reinvented the concept of the original music with a totally different vibe.
Excuse me ....but .....cubicle has in British English a totally different meaning = in England it´s a toilet box and not an office box...the whole line is therefore not a "9to5 job reference" - but - a reference about "a junky in a toilet box" using his spoon in order to heat up his heroin (or cocain or a mixture of both or what ever) for a shot
When Ren said that being in the cubicle that old spoon is usable, hes talking about a junkie doing heroin drugs and that junkies mother standing at funereal after losing her son to drug addiction
Ren things 😊 Glad to see you back in the rabbit hole. You might say you’re deep down it, but there’s still sooooo much to check out. And who knows when he releases another album 😂 Ren might have been a chain smoker before he had to quit for treatment in Canada but he is even more addicted to music 😅
Urban Hymns one of the great 90s albums. Certainly not a one hit wonder. They got permission from Decca Records but Allan Klein the famously hard manager of the Stones, sued them. They had to hand over all royalties. Then in 2019, after Klein had been dead 10 yeyars, the Stones signed the rights back to The Verve. The Ren retake mimics the classic original video.
I just love how Ren sees beauty in everything! Y’all are killing me pointing out all the fast food places 😂 Did you see Ren is dropping the acoustic version of Troubles tomorrow??! (5/30/24)
On the food places. The number one chain in the UK is Greggs, as far as number of locations (he passes one early in the vid). Then it's Subway and then McDonald's... We do have Popeyes too, TacoBell, Shake Shack etc but they're in much smaller numbers. You obviously won't know of Greggs but it's a bakery but they sell everything from sandwiches to pies and pastries, and sweet and savoury. So a steak bake is a puff pastry slice filled with steak and gravy... The most popular item is a sausage roll.
As always couldn’t click fast enough! You guys are one of my favourite REN reactors always on the money with your observations. You should do 1990’s official lyric video next.

But as he probably will release at least 3 new albums this year I think you’ll stay behind. Don’t shy away from the old ones. Almost all of them are just as good as the recent ones. This looks a lot like a one take, but notice the light and shadows change, vehicles suddenly appear and disappear. I dont know if it was a couple of takes one morning or subsequent days trying to catch the same sunrise angles, but its definitely more than one take. The comments about the fast food joints made me laugh. Traveled from Texas to Dubai for work several years ago for work and was told to go to mall for local food. Cab dropped me off in from of Texas Roadhouse. Sigh.
