    So essentially Hydra in an 'in-between' checkpoint renderer. If the scene works in Hydra it will port to other softwares and can be refined from there. It isn't intended for final output, it is a tool for porting to other engines. At least that is the general idea I'm getting from it.

    • @MetalGearMk3
      @MetalGearMk3 Рік тому +6

      You can hook up production renderer through Hydra too, so it can be used for final output. Storm is just a preview renderer afaik.

    • @Snowfly1
      @Snowfly1 Рік тому +7

      Hydra isnt actually a renderer, Hydra by itself doesn't do anything. Its an architecture for delivering scene data between your DCC and chosen renderer.
      So for example your renderer (ie. Storm, Moonray or VRay) will have a Render Delegate (the bridge). Your DCC (ie. Blender, Maya, Houdini) will have a scene and send that scene data to your renderer using the delegate and your renderer will send the appropriate image data back to Hydra which will display it inside your Hydra Viewport. This is called interactive rendering you see your scene being rendered as you interact with it in the viewport.
      Final output or Batch Rendering is a different system which doesn't interact with Hydra.
      *Edit
      Looked into it a bit and Hydra is capable of dispatching final image renders. HdStorm does not though.

    This really separates the Blender community into two clear cuts: those who understand how absolutely powerful Hydra + USD is, and how amazing it is to have this integration; and those who don't understand that. People outside the industry really don't seem to understand what USD is and why it is useful. I started working on getting USD converted to Python 3 over 5 years ago so it could work with Blender. Since then, Pixar added Python 3 support, and Blender Foundation started integrating USD into Blender, but not at all in a production capacity. USD needs to be integrated from the ground up, and this is a step towards that.
    tl;dr:
    Blender artists: "it needs must be pretty to be useful."
    Pixar/industry: "it needs must be useful to be useful."

    • @gcharb2d

      The BI started the integration of FBX in Blender over 13 years ago, and there are still over a hundred FBX functionalities missing in Blender as of today, so I would not hold my breath if I were you, a decent USD integration, let alone Hydra and MaterialX, will probably never happen!

    As you said, is a good tool to 'check' if your stuff is done properly in the HYDRA frame work USD, so if you are sending things to let's say karma in Houdini' you can check how things are coming. I don't know if USD will REALLY become the standard, everyone seems to love it, but still there is a lot of stuff in between to account for, is not like magic format that understands everything, but is pretty good.

    • @fulanxi6434
      @fulanxi6434 Рік тому +1

      USD is the standart actually for mid and big studio. USd contains shaders, you can kick it from Maya or Houdini. Then Go to Katana to render your scene with an incredible speed. Big studio on LINUX only, then it means that you need TD's to kick USD from maya. Maya itself do not kick it properly, need script. That is all. If you can kick it from Maya correctly, it contains shad then everything is easy out of maya for rendering.

  • @PingerSurprise
    @PingerSurprise Рік тому +7

    Outside of the USD utility, Hydra is indeed not a "render" engine, but rather a "preview" engine. This is more of a compromise between Workbench and EEVEE, where you can view animations with textured models, but with the performance of Workbench. VERY useful to work faster while reducing the electricity bill.

    • @gcharb2d
      @gcharb2d 11 місяців тому +2

      Hydra is not a render engine at all, it is a protocol that allows Hydra capable render engines like Redshift, VRay, RMan etc, to render the same scene from inside a single setup, just look at Solaris in Houdini for an example.

    I think the industry wants it so they can outsource stuff to smaller groups who can work in blender for free, and you're basically just paying them for some time. You dont even expect them to render it at movie levels, being able to work on stuff like even a mid level laptop if needed. Graphics seem to be taking a step back in movies, and they need to get more people working on projects as cheaply as possible. I hope it pulls off, it could be a great side hustle for many 3d graphic artists. Popping home to work on a more exciting project in blender without all the licence headaches or needing a super computer to render.

    So, if I understand correctly,
    Hydra Storm is the new render engine added to Blender.
    This engine uses the USD file format,
    something which is getting use in the industry.
    Speculation allows for the possibility
    that this is an effort to standardize 3D within the industry,
    so that all compatible 3D programs (including Blender)
    are options within the production pipeline.
    Is that the idea?

    • @3dbob891

    Hydra needs a great USD support and Blender simply isn't ready for USD pipelines. The render engine is just showing that there'll be improvements on USD platform. Also USD support alone isn't enough to put Blender into a greater pipelines. All other software kits are already in the front. Blender is a bit late.

    Blender is already fully capable of being an "Industry Standard", on par with Max, Maya, etc. It already can produce results on par with anything from commercial software. It's even more extendable through scripting. What keeps it from being deemed as such is that people need to justify spending thousands of dollars per license on their software of choice. And developers of said software need to be able to justify charging those thousands of dollars.
    Just like everyone says "Adobe products are the industry standard", meanwhile there's options out there just as capable - and even moreso - at a fraction of the cost.

    Industry don´t use generalists. Professionals on the movie industry use a pipeline and that pipeline is divided by the best program for each department. People on the industry don´t use a single program for multiple functions, and thats what Blender does. Blender its a good intro for 3d world and small companies. That´s it. In 10 years the discussion will be exatcly the same: Why blender 10 is not the industry standard... blender like someone says is build for masses. It´s like NASA. People that love space, has spacial apps in their homes. Then if they start working in NASA, they will have more professional and even inaccessible programs. 2 different markets: home market and pro market.

    As a 10-year Blender user, I feel that Blender has become a bloated bunch of “must-have plug-ins” with an increasing number of OS dependencies. If they could have put even 10% of their now very ample resources into fixing the BGE, they would already be the industry standard for everything, and also be the go-to engine of choice for game devs and physics demos. Also, AI is rapidly making years of hard-begotten Blender skills completely obsolete now. If you wanna make Pixar movies using paid AI plug-ins, great. But if you just want have fun and make games (most people that actually download Blender), and actually feel like you CREATED something, it's just no fun anymore in my opinion.

      Probably the way is structured, is very old, is relatively fast for modelling, or used to be.. but for complex VFX, Max is pain... worst than Maya.. for simple tasks is Ok, Max is a very good application when combined with CAD visualization too, at least until recent times is pretty solid and have lots of resources on the Architectural area, has a strong foot on that .

      Well... you can do VFX with it but why put yourself to this torture? Max is a very very old piece of code in its core, which they try to teach a new tricks without rewriting the whole software, as a result we have some really ugly and strange construction which barely holds together. Working with it after you've tried some decent modern software is a real pain, I'm saying it as 20+ years Max user.

Also this industry is changing, nobody in my generation of producers really cares about what Disney and universal are using.
