This is my opinion on these units. If I didn't answer something let me know in the comments. If I don't know it I can send you to someone who can.
Camera I use to film with.

Please fix your description/review of the diopter. You’re incorrect and putting out bad information. The diopter isn’t the objective lense or frontal adjustment. That’s at the rear of both units. The DTNVS has adjustable for different vision, the 31s are fixed. Both objectives (front ones) will focus to read a watch, camera ITAK etc etc. you can also order specific diopters for the 31’s from L3 for your specific eye sight if needed.
The DTNVS has auto gain and uses PVS-14 tubes and optics. PVS-31s have manual gain and use proprietary tubes and optics. Replacement parts are cheaper and more readily available for the DTNVS as opposed to the PVS-31s. If you have to send in your nods for any kind of service or repairs, turnaround time for the DTNVS would likely be faster considering government contracts take priority for the 31s.
I'm probably one of few people in this comment section who actually have a lot of hours behind both. I'm taking 31s all day and its not even close for a few reasons.
1. Weight. 31s are noticeably lighter, not just in the hand, but also when on the helmet. This means that 31s don't require as much counterweight as well so not only do you save on the natural weight of the device, but you also save on the weight needed to balance them.
2. Native battery pack support for 31s. Both require some sort of weight on the rear of the helmet to balance, with 31s that's a useful battery pack that serves a purpose. With DTNVSs its lead weight. if you want to add battery pack support to DTNVSs it costs hundreds of dollars
3. the dovetail on 31s is further forward. This gives you more room for adjustment when setting distance from your eyes. I always had my DTNVss maxed out to the closest point possible and i would have used 1-2 more notches if i could have
4. 31 glass is absolutely unmatched. I went from 37 SNR to 38 SNR 2700 FOM to 2750 so the difference in specs is entirely negligible yet the additional clarity of 31s is extremely noticeable.
5. Manual gain for 31s is a useless feature for 99% of people but if people care, they have it
6. IPD stops are pretty overrated in general, but they are a nice option to have. Theyre native to 31s, not DTNVSs
People always say the DTNVSs are cheaper, but they're really not. My DTNVSs were 11 from custom night vision brand new. My 31s were 12.3 brand new. By the time I buy a battery pack, cable, IPD stops, and battery pack adapter I'm easily in to DTNVSs for 13k+ for a device that's heavier, has worse glass, and less adjustment options. I will also give DTNVSs one bonus for not having the battery pod on the housing hang below the bridge. This design with 31s and other housings can cause some issues with field of view obstruction when using optics, particularly those mounted lower to the rail.
The ONLY reason to choose DTNVSs is if you don't have correctable or natural 20/20 or better vision and need the adjustable ocular diopter. the only other feature they have that 31s don't is a built in IR illuminator but frankly if you have the money to be looking at L3 DTNVSs or 31a's and debating the purchase then you have the money to buy a surefire vampire and put it on an S&S mount like everyone else. Its a much better system anyways.
I greatly appreciate your detailed input brother! I have about 20 hours on the 31s and around 30 for the dtnvs. I appreciate guys like you in the industry who gives knowledge and not bashes people’s opinion. Really good input man! I got rid of the dtnvs and only have the 31s now. Mostly because how crisp the 31s are and higher fom
@@NickIsenhourhey bro. Just curious as to what specs you went with on your pvs31
You can adjust the objective lenses on the PVS31 to focus on near and far objects. The only lenses you can’t adjust are the ocular (diopter).
You also get IPD stops with the 31's as opposed to them being 4-500 bucks after market for the DTNVS.
Just ordered my PVS-31A’s. Thanks for the review. Can’t wait to get them. Should work great with the NGAL.
Yes sir!
Thank you for the review. Before I came across your video, I couldn’t decide which set to get so I got the DTNV. I really like my DTNV, I feel that I see everything pretty clear, but I don’t know if I should have bought the PVS31’s instead. I wish I could have tried both sets before I made my choice.
the 31s battery pack has an IR Flash that can aid in illumination if you don't have an IR light
I love the dtnvs but if it was manual gain and came with the iPd stops not as an additional price. They would be perfect.

Can you do a review on the RPNVG SG?
Please more on the DD NEW SUB here fantastic vid3o.
Is it just me or are the optics way better on the 31A than the Carson on the DTNVS? Can you post your specs on each?
Where did you purchase the pvs31a? Thanks !
Costa Defense
@@NickIsenhour thanks !
I really need a companion to the new eotech
Wait I'm confused, what tubes are in the dtnvs?
They are the same tubes. They just don't put the pigtail on the tubes for the dtnvs since they are auto gain. The glass is proprietary on the pvs31a. The dtnvs uses carson pvs14 glass
Both l3. There is a lot of different tubes people use but both my dtnvs and 31s are l3
What are your thoughts on 1531s vs dtnvs ?
I like the DTNVS. Best bang for your buck
DTNVS is better imo
Why do you need two of them?
Why do you need two guns? Do you ever heard of "Hobbys"?
Dtnvs all the way! Love mine.
Wear them in snowy conditions with the moon light shining down. Good luck being able to see since they don’t have manual gain which is very important for that very reason
@@Abolish_The_ATF I live in South Carolina, no snow here!
@@joeyss98 what if you have too when it becomes Red Dawn and we gotta use our capabilities in the mountains
You're right. The DTNVS from a design perspective, look way cooler.
GoonInGear as a seller? Thoughts?
31s are always a good tactical flex. #jakehunter88
