You guys, I just found a sneek peak of some of this beautiful journey that this channels brings. Da Jungleboys channel has a sneek peek of more of this journey!
Hey Kaylee & Jordan, I have been meaning to comment for ages but you know, things just got in the way. I worked in the timber industry in Australia for 20 years so some of this might be useful but if you already know it, my apologies. 1. Timber is hygroscopic. So it it gives off and takes on moisture to reflect its surroundings. It's called EMC (Equilibrium Moisture Content). So you can dry a piece of timber to say 9% in a kiln but once it comes out, if the surrounding moisture content is 13% that is what it will revert to. You can try and reduce the moisture uptake by painting, varnish, less so oils. Remember that timber has 4 sides so people often seal one face and not the other and then wonder why the timber will cup. If you are using any timber externally you have to seal it all the way around. 2. The company I worked for built a solar kiln. We were drying a timber called White Cypress (Callitris columellaris - don't laugh) which all though a soft wood, has amazing durability properties even in ground. The problem we found with the kiln was that the oils in the timber that made it so termite resistant and durable actually coated the walls of the kiln and cut down the heat exchange. This may not happen with your timber but just watch to see if there is any oily build up on the sheeting. 3. Your sawmilling with a chainsaw will produce both 1/4 cut and backsawn boards. 1/4 cut board are where the growth rings are vertical or greater than 45 degrees to the face. These will stay more stable and cup less. If the growth rings drop below 45 degrees to the face you have back sawn board and they will cup more. If you are building a bench top or joining them together and the boards are backsawn the flip every alternate board over so that the stress will pull against the other boards not go with it. 4. Every tree will have sap wood and heart wood. In Some it is easy to pick in others it is not. Try to avoid sap wood which is usally a lighter colour. The heart wood is usally more durable and more stable. Anyway I am so jealous of what you guys are doing. If this has helped great. Give Lola and Roger a bit hug and scritchies from me.
This is so interesting to me thank you! My husband is a word worker and a lot of times mills his own lumber but I feel like there’s still so much to learn about it!
they are not worried (nor is anyone drying wood) about the last 4%. it is the 78% from GREEN to usable wood under 15%. for an expert... you're kinda...
Hello, my name is Kina. I have been following your UA-cam channel for a couple years now. I just want to say thank you and I love watching your journeys. Kaylee! Your bump is here! You look amazing. Also- I can listen to your accents all day. I’m from California so the New York dialect is intriguing. Love you all!
Puppies so cute piled up together. (Please get them fixed. No offense meant.) Loved the puppy growling at its reflection. You think your heart is full with darling pups just wait! The best is yet to come.
As a veteran of 6 years in U.S. Army it's nice to see people doing things to support our soldiers especially the ones in need. I'd never enter it myself but it's good to hear.
First of all, y’all are awesome. Keep it up. Jordan, I think you might have your mill assembled backwards. Those Granberg mills are designed so that the bottom of your bar does the cutting. Flip your mill posts around so that the saw mounts with the power head up and the bottom of the bar facing forward. You’ll notice that where it mounts on the bar by the power head the clamps have little curved metal sleds; those are meant to ride along the side of the log as you go because, when cutting with the bottom of the bar, the chain pulls the power head into the wood. That’s what you want; the saw starts doing your work for you. The way you’ve got it set up, I’ll bet the power head tends to push away from the log, right? Flip it around and it’ll save you all that seesawing and pushing: less strain on your saw and your back. With a good , sharp chain, it should practically pull itself through the wood.
Flip that insulation over & cut with the paper on top & first. Press your knife down to the ground & make your cut to prevent tearing of the paper. In hindsight, you’re probably already done with the project, but never hurts to know for the future. Make sure to change your razor blades often to ensure they’re sharp before making your cuts & your insulation wont be so torn up. Fiberglass does a number on cutting tools & cutting it the way you were (fiberglass up) will always release fiberglass into the air & your skin. Love watching your channel & couldn’t help but provide some advice after many years of installing insulation. All the best your way & congrats on the lil one!!
Try splitting your wood parallel to the rings instead of across the grain. You should find this much easier. I am enjoying watching your content. Very cool.
The husks were a good idea in the absence of anything else but will tend to pack down over time plus they'll absorb the moisture coming out of your boards. Be mindful of mold too. You two are building a great life in a beautiful place!
Insulating the walls of the kiln will cancel out the benefit of painting the walls black, I would be more worried about insulating the kennel to protect from the pups from the heat of the kiln
The plastic sheeting should have been used to make a second layer on the roof. The fiberglass has little heat retention quality. Like double pane glass, plastic will improve how much heat escapes. .
Agreed also the airflow is important for drying so the spray foam is counter-productive. I would only insulate the side of the shed that gets little or no sunshine and let the heat radiate in through the other walls. The escaping hot air takes away moisture as hot air carries more moisture than cold air. The cold air flowing in to replace the hot air leaving might feel moist but as it heats up it will be able to hold more moisture so you need vents in the floor and at the roof level.
They did say they are insulating for the pups...and that they are out all day anyway. (I was scratching my head a bit about insulating the walls too...maybe it keeps more heat at night then). I'm having a good time watching the different things being done. Each time I have a head scratching movement..."why are they..." the answer comes around and they are getting some help in comments...and often have thought of it but didn't mention it. So glad this is being shared. It's quite enjoyable.
This times a thousand!!! 3 kids, 3 surgeries each for PE tubes (eardrum tube), tonsil and adnoidectomy. One kid had to have his tonsils removed twice. If you can get rice hulls, it will be a better alternative than the coffee husk. Rice hulls do not flame or smolder very easily, they are highly resistant to moisture penetration and fungal decomposition, they do not transfer heat very well, they do not smell or emit gases, and they are not corrosive with respect to aluminum, copper or steel.
The black tin walls will heat up from the sun your insulation will KEEP THE HEAT OUT. You need to rethink what your doing. Venting needed to remove moisture.
Nope - the main heat source will be the solar gain from the transparent roof. Light comes in, gets absorbed by the wood and interior, becomes heat which is then reflected by the transparent roof and retained by the insulation. The black paint on the walls will enhance the insulation's effectiveness. The hotter the outside of the kiln is, the more heat will be retained inside because heat flows from hot to cold, less so from hot to warm.
Light comes in roof only when sun is over head, but black tin will absorb heat and release it inside for more hours per day. Plastic will keep moisture in not what he wants. Coffee husks also may rot in the walls.

I love to see the changes in your lives and the way you have each grown. Kaylie, there is nothing you can't do. I loved the brief sequence of your yoga workout: beautiful. I love all the ambition in you all itchy sweaty and yet you still end with a good attitude. Life isn’t perfect but you find ways to love each other and persevere. Happy for you all.
You guys are doing amazing things down there. Using your land and the natural environment to the fullest. Glad you did a temp check on the pups sleeping quarters. I know many people were concerned. Thank you for the baby bump update, adorable! I know what you are saying about the weight issue. Having a tendency to get too thin doesn't garner any sympathy from those who struggle to keep there weight down, but I've struggled to keep weight on for years so I get it. You look stunning, healthy and happy. Happy mommies make happy babies. May God continue to be with you on this journey, may He Bless and keep you all safe, healthy, living in peace and bless all your efforts. In Jesus name, Amen.
Don't feel bad, we can't find insulation here in the states either. Building supplies are crazy hard to get and 2 to 3 xs the price. Just look at Trent and Allies problems...lol Bless you guys. Looking good Kaylee. You are all aglow.
My husband and I own a construction/excavating company in northern Michigan and we got word from a few of our suppliers late last week that prices were going to start coming down finally. I’m hoping the rest of the country is the same.
I don't think I ever saw insulation in Costa Rica either. Not in 9 years. But I have seen plastic shopping bags stuffed into finished walls and ceilings. The coffee stuff will get bugs in it I think. It makes great compost for your garden

Awesome! You guys took my advice about using the coffee husks! Hope it works out well. Don't pack it too tight the air pockets are what give you the insulation.
Hi, couple! I´m an enthusiast of you work and lifestyle. It gives me courage to wake up and make stuff happens, and even build things at home too! As a brazilian architect, I think you have an enoumous educational porpose when you show how to recicle and assemble materials in a susteinable way. Love and peace from Brasília!
For a few seconds, I was thrilled my coffee chaff would be your insulation!!!! Your projects are so ambitious and I love watching. I don't understand all the dogs tho. Ha!
I don't think anything you do is crazy. I think you are resourceful, willing to learn and adapt. Most importantly you are respectful while people criticize. Homesteading is hard, farming has a variety of natural elements and running a business has challenges. You are developing amazing skills for yourselves so thanks for sharing. I hope my kids grow up to handle the world and online world as well as you are!
Great video. With all that heat could you capture water off the roof store in a tank inside and make a hot out door shower. You would probably need a cool tank outside to mix with not to get scalded. Also the water tank would hold the heat through the night inside the kiln. Your a beautiful mom by the way. The two of you are going to be great parents. In a crazy world it's nice to see. Have you guys ever thought of planting bambusa ohldami giant timber bamboo. It has comertial value and you can build huge structures with it. Sustainable building material. There used to be a stand of it when I lived at Allbrook . Amazing stuff. The Forrest is pretty surreal as well. There are videos on how it's made into comertial grade building material and how to preserve it. Costa Rica does a lot. It will even grow in the states. We built a tree house that was 20 x 15 when I lived on Allbrook up in the woods. It lasted for years until the military fired the jungle to scorch the pot people had growing. About 6 years to have a self sustaing grove. You could build some cool things with the stuff. We split some up to weave floors for bonitos. Those thatched hut buildings. They were nice as well. Deluxe with screen material to slow the bugs down. Stayed in several for months. Entertaining times
Gosh one video a week is just not enough, your life work and play is very interesting and I for one would love to see more. Stay safe and enjoy the upcoming weeks of summer.
I use coffee chaffe from a local roaster to add into our hard pack dirt here in Colorado, to add into raised beds and to put in layers into the compost. It works wonders to break up the clay here.
Yall are so beautiful. And you are doing great. Love Kaylee baby bump ❤she is looking beautiful. Jordan, ewe you got to be itchy working with that insulation. And it was great you addressed everyone's concerns about the puppies house getting too hot. Goes to show everyone's concerns about the things yall are doing have already been researched and thought out. Yall are rocking it. All the concerns people are posting about the kiln I'm sure you will research and adjust if necessary. Great sponsor too. ❣
I'm not saying your wrong, but I don't get some of the solar kiln. You paint the outside black to absorb the heat then insulate against it. And you seal up all the gaps, when surely you need the air circulation?
I agree. Why are you insulating against the heat? You need a thermal mass inside to keep it warm, not insulation. It's 150 in there without insulation.
Hi guys, With regard to your solar kiln. How are you going to remove the moisture from the kiln. You will need air flow otherwise the kiln will be full of condensation.
You guys are so creative and resourceful! I just love how this whole journey of yours has been about problem solving with positive attitudes. Funny how so many people in your comments section are all of the sudden solar kiln experts 😂

The puppies are getting big and they are so beautiful.
I am watching you and drinking your coffee that I just got in the mail, it all makes for a perfect Saturday morning. :)
Watching your life is just an amazing thing is a very lucky for what you have . May the universe bless you in love and light.
Love you guys!
Everyday I check UA-cam for your upload!
Luckily today is my day off! It’s nomadic movement day!
Don't feel bad, we can't find insulation here in the states either. Building supplies are crazy hard to get and 2 to 3 xs the price. Just look at Trent and Allies problems...lol
Bless you guys. Looking good Kaylee. You are all aglow.
My husband and I own a construction/excavating company in northern Michigan and we got word from a few of our suppliers late last week that prices were going to start coming down finally. I’m hoping the rest of the country is the same.
Yes follow them too. Shortages all over.
You guys are so resourceful! Using the chaff from the coffee for insulation. Mind blown!? 🤯 Had no idea that you could do that
Kaylee is setting a great example for her future child in regards to hard work and dedication. So inspirational man.
Thanks for letting us know the temp in the dog house. I was kind of worried about that. Very reassuring.
Your baby bump is so adorable
I don't think I ever saw insulation in Costa Rica either. Not in 9 years. But I have seen plastic shopping bags stuffed into finished walls and ceilings. The coffee stuff will get bugs in it I think. It makes great compost for your garden
Absolutely amazing how you take everything the earth gives us and are able to utilize for something functional. Poop, food waste, coffee husks, trees, rain water, our sun... so very uplifting watching your daily exploits. Thank you for sharing.

P.S. Proud to have my name displayed at the end of every video and on the Lola's Farm wooden sign.
Thank you guys for sharing your life with us, every week we look forward to seeing your video . Take care of yourself and that bundle of joy you have, can’t wait till we see this baby girl 🥰🥰.
I've said it before but you need to hear it again, I'm very proud of you, and I love you ,just keep being you and the sky is the limit..... when you spread love and kindness great things happen!
Great to see you all busy on Lola's farm😊
Ha!
Dogs for companionship
I’ve noticed this for a while but haven’t commented, the cinematic camera is amazing *chefs kiss.
The puppers are hella snoring....what a blissful life.
Loved the beginning when you took the puppies for a walk and there's roger!
I’m pretty sure Roger moved to Rodrigo’s! He gets more attention there 😉
Loved Kaylee and her update on her "little bump". Going to have to remember that quote.
All your animals make me SO happy 😍
Love the time lapse video! Had to watch it twice! The puppies are so sweet all cuddled up together! ❤️
I am loving watching you get your baby bump. You are going to be such a good mother.
Gosh one video a week is just not enough, your life work and play is very interesting and I for one would love to see more. Stay safe and enjoy the upcoming weeks of summer.
Awhhhh the puppies sleeping together is so sweet.
Sorry they sent you old crappy insulation. Hope the milling gets better. Baby bump and body weight looks great. Thank you for always being a blessing
I use coffee chaffe from a local roaster to add into our hard pack dirt here in Colorado, to add into raised beds and to put in layers into the compost. It works wonders to break up the clay here.
Just got my first delivery of coffee. Tomorrow I start my day with you wonderful smelling coffee!
You should build a Earthen oven or brick oven outside to bake bread and pizza. All my other UA-camrs are making them.
Love the comment "all my other UA-camrs are making them." Sweet. The folks I watch are like a family substitute to me. Smile.
That's a great idea.
Insulation works both ways, they want to keep the heat in once it’s in.
They need to put a dehumidifier in there to get the moisture out.
@@jjano2320 that would defeat the object of drying wood with free energy.
Yes, I thought exactly the same thing and was perplexed when they said it had heated to 150 degrees because of the insulation.
Rub coconut oil on your body to stop stretch marks from forming
Love the growth of your pregnancy, you look beautiful!!! ❣️🌻♥️🌼🕊️
God bless and be with you both.
Kaylee, I love that you're still rocking it. Jordan, I love that you're figuring it out. 😎🚐❤️
Fighting with tools is never fun or productive! Hope things go more smoothly for you. Puppy pit is so sweet!
After watching Kaylee eat and talk about that bomb a$$ sausage, I want some sausage! Headed to the kitchen now.
Hi guys, With regard to your solar kiln. How are you going to remove the moisture from the kiln. You will need air flow otherwise the kiln will be full of condensation.
You've ruined me with La Nina coffee!!! So delicious, my normal coffee tastes like crap now! 😂
So much progress! Your joyful vibes are infectious and I always feel better after enjoying your vlogs. Best to you all!💚🌸💚🌸💚🌸💚🌸💚🌸💚🌸
You guys are so creative and resourceful! I just love how this whole journey of yours has been about problem solving with positive attitudes. Funny how so many people in your comments section are all of the sudden solar kiln experts 😂
I love the ingenuity as much as yourselves!...
What a great insight of how one or two or three or more ought to be!...
Hey you guys! Love watching your days and your ups and downs. You seem to stay pretty up. You handle it all in stride. Love and blessings! Especially to your little girlie coming along! 🥰
I can’t help myself. I have seen so many off grid people toiling at splitting wood, I wonder if they have seen this on UA-cam, “post spring log splitter”. I’ll bet you guys with all your welding skills could make one of these yourself. I really enjoy your videos! I’ll probably be ordering coffee soon.
Sincerely guys, I love your videos! I had lived all your experience as my own in every single video, from the good moments to hard ones, and makes me realize things that I didnt even knew from my home country. The best part is that relating feeling, as Im living abroad and got to experienced so much, BUT really what you guys are doing is amazing in every single level, keep on! Thanks so much!
I love this family sooo much!!! Y’all are sooo awesome!!!! And omg im still much in love with la niña coffee!! Thank you.
My husbands and I are looking to buy some land to play on too. And this solar kiln and little mill is something we are excited to do a well!! So cool!!! 🙌💙
