  • It's time for my long-term review of one of the best grain mills available to homebrewers and smaller pro brewers alike. Manufactured by Blichmann Engineering, I share my opinion after having had this mill for around 3 years.

    I've had mine for about three years, and it is so worth it, but I have the smaller hopper/stand as I only brew 15 gallons at a time. Small hopper is perfect size for me, and when full will pretty much fill up a five gallon bucket. I use the casters that Blichmann provided and they work just fine as I move it around in my home brewery when milling.
    Finally, I heard John Blichmann just watched this video a couple weeks ago. I think he said something like "Oh my God...I can't handle it if PortlyGentleman isn't using the safety bar...I am just gonna retire!" And that, my friends, is the rest of the story.

    I want! I have a hate hate relationship with my mill. Every 2 or 3 pounds of grain I have to readjust it. If I tighten it down to where I don't have too, one of the rollers stops working and it won't crush anymore.

      I definitely know the feeling that is the worst. Something so simple should be easy and consistent. 🍻

    Great long term review! Now if only they had it in 240V for us in Europe :)

      That is too bad with some clever wiring. I bet you could run it off of one leg..

    Nice mill, Great video!
    The base board I Polyurethaned. Seemed to seal it well.

    Nice vid! 2 questions ... Overseas so need 220v / 50hz, does that exist? Can you see the gap adjust in mm?

    I bought this one, though I got the small stand and small hopper. I also brew big beers on the B80 and tend to have grain bills around 35-40lbs. I'd considered the larger hopper and stand but decided I didn't want to lift and dump the whole grain bill all at once anyway, so I just grind it in batches into a 5 gallon ale pail which fits under the small stand perfectly. We're supposed to dough in slowly anyway, right? :D
    Bradley, I'd be curious if you get the Spike new grain mill to test if it's half as good as the Blichman or better, as it's half the price. If it gets a similar quality crush just slower, and if it's built reliably enough at Spike's typical high quality, that'd be pretty compelling for lots of home-brew folks. The Blichman is just stupidly fast and way more mill than I need, but I do love the quality of the crush that it provides and the no-hassle repeatability of it.

      I personally think the best setup is the large hopper and the small stand. I'm super curious to try and get my hands on one as well. I would definitely compare them If they compare.

    My Barley Crusher is now dead to me after one too many "I give up" starts to the brew day (grain not crushing, it falling over and flinging grain everywhere, etc.). For someone doing 5 gallon batches mainly except for holidays, would you "buy once cry once" and get this one, or get something like a Monster Mill instead? Thanks!

    • @PortlyGentleman
      @PortlyGentleman  10 місяців тому

      This is a good option. I wouldn't touch a monster personally not worth the money. There's another one I have at the moment. I'm testing. It's also pretty good.

      @@PortlyGentleman appreciate the feedback on the Monster! Honestly would probably end up pissing me off too lol. Thanks dude I’ll keep an eye on your channel for the other mill. Honestly the only “downside” on this one seems to be price, but a grand isn’t too bad for something that’ll last years and years and years

    Sorry off topic. Just watch your Komos kegerator video. Are you still using it. Any issues. Would you recommend me buying it. I am replacing my old kegerator after 14 yrs. I forget the brand.

      I think they're an awesome product I would absolutely buy one. Unfortunately, mine did not survive the move to Northern California. Which was absolutely my faul.
