Thank for your video! It’ll will help to replace the thermostat on my 1981 evinrude 15hp. Do you have a link or a part number for the thermostat cover gasket please?
I have a 1984 Johnson 15hp, how do you get the lever out of the way to make enough room for the thermostat cover to come out? Without taking power head off

@@BlackoutBilll21 my motor will run if I have it in forward , as soon as I let off it’ll die. It will attempt to fire in neutral however if it does fire it will immediately die . Is it due to this low speed adjustment needle ? I’ve already cleaned and rebuilt the carb, put in a new fuel pump, impeller kit , and replaced the gas lines .
I need help. Evinrude 9.9 runs great for half an hour then dies hard, it’s very hard to start afterwards but will start eventually. Fixed Carb, fuel pump, all the lines, spark plugs. Could it be the thermostat?
couple of thoughts here. your coil pack might be heating up causing you to lose spark when hot (assuming you run a power pack and not dual coils. i dont know your year). I had a motor that did this... its the red on in my videos. I would check for leaks at the base gasket by spraying carb cleaner at the base of the block. you MIGHT have a lower ehaust gasket leak. Pretty unlikly. Its usually spark or fuel. try running it on a new tank and line setup. dont assume your bulb/tank is ok. also if all that doesnt work, try a different carb just to rule it out
Man I greatly appreciate you reaching out and helping me! I’m going to try the coils because that seems to be the only thing I haven’t tried yet like you said but if I have any luck I’ll let you know and if I have any questions I’ll try to ask them now I know someone smart is willing to lend a hand. Thank you very very much!
if thats the case your coils are probably ok. they rarely fail... the main coil pack is typically a problem with these motors. and its my absolute pleasure to help. I wish I posted more content but i can at least reply to comments @@TreyAdams-jy4dl
Yessir, well if you think the coils aren’t the problem I’m not sure exactly what to do next I feel as if I have replaced everything that I possibly could. It doesn’t make sense, it’ll run really good for 30 minutes to an hour then it dies hard and acts like it’s flooded until I give it time to cool down then it’ll run good again and repeat the process. I’ll just tear it down and look over every single thing possible.
Florida you are probably fine, sometime they can actually run hot without one due to cooling water passing too fast if youre in a body of water thats too warm. plenty of people run no stat you should be fine. @@Outboard1boats

its tricky. you have to take it out of there. it does come out. sorry im not much help here
some people drill a hole through the cowling... i wouldnt recommend
I took my latch off and loosened the 3 shock mounts
I ended up taking the whole engine out, not as hard as it seems. She’s running cool again.
Do some models not have a spring? I have a 77 and just did mine i dont recall seeing a spring and i reallt dont want to take it all apart again
looks like youre in luck!! The parts diagrams I use show they started using a spring in 1981!!
My Johnson 82 isn’t peeing. Could changing this temp gauge help?
possible but id start with the water pump and rubber gromment underneith the power head!
Is the spring required? My 1984 dosent have one so id have to order it
not sure... Should be easy to come by!
@gdamtbnms I'd figure it's easy to come by just don't want to pull power head again just did the water jacket gasket and thermostat
@@sentuardude8647 I would agree! Run it and if you have issues I doubt you will, then dig into it again
Did it not have a gasket retainer ring on top of the thermostat gasket??
it did! I put it in off camera! Nice EYES!!
What year did they change it...
i believe sometime after 84 ish
Where did you get the new thermostat at ? I have a Johnson 79 9.9 2 stroke

Can you run your motor without a thermostat?
you "can" but depending in what region you live in, its better to run with it
