Nice explanation. The upper water tube grommet is often to blame for cooling issues on these OMC 9.9-15s. The salt builds up around the outside of the upper grommet and crushes it, restricting water flow into the exhaust manifold...
@@MitzvosGolem1 For sure, I remember the first 1980 9.9 I discovered the issue on so many years ago! Again, I understand what the engineers were trying to accomplish, but the solution created a much bigger problem. The 74-78 models had a different type of grommet that had no issues, don't replace those with the new/superceded problem grommet!
That was a great explanation man, will really help me figure out why i have no water in tell tale even with new impeller. Like for ex didnt know there was a thermostat.
Thank you for earnestly sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it. You greatly helped me to understand how cooling water flows through my 1956 Johnson AD-10M. I have spent many days poking a wire through ports and channels of individual parts in trying to understand the coolant flow path. I tried to do this without the head gasket and I failed. Thanks for pointing out how coolant moves from the cylinder block to the cylinder head. Thanks again. (I am now poking a wire through the lubrication passages.)
You are the best. You show and explain everything we need to know I thank you. Have watched most of the other guys on UTube they know their shit ,but your the best.
Good video..Always good content..A lot of people are getting the older motors without thru hub exhaust Up and running.Same princeple applies but the exit of the water. If you ever get hold of the older style or even use a grease board to do an explanation of how water exits leg would be Interesting.
This is very imteresting. What the lower motor cover nipple for? Lools like the pee hole most engines have. Anyway, I don't know how much water comes out the lower discharge port's on my '77 15hp Evinrude, but when i had it o the lake it sprayed a lot out the exhaust the whole time
Friend how much did you end up putting into the rebuild of the 15 hp Johnson 🤔 ?? I have a 1969 6hp Johnson I'm thinking about rebuilding just trying to weigh the cost!! Your channel I enjoy tremendously and your work is very accurate Keep up the great work and I will be pushing your channel every chance I get!!
Where does the copper tube under the powerhead go. Does it go in one of the holeds next to the exhaust? Does it go into the hole in the middle in front of the exhaust? Looks like the tube from the water pump goes up there. 1984 johnson 9.9
What the point of having a thermostat in an outboard motor you what to keep cool. What if you just remove the thermostat and run it. It still circulates the water as expected?
With a hose I pumped water from the top of the head by post thermostat and it pours out AROUND the copper pipe, I dont see it going through exhaust? Evinrude 78 15hp.
Hello, I watched a lot of your videos, and they have helped me out a lot. Some helped me fix my out board motors. But now I have a problem showing up on more outboardmotors and I hope you can help me out. I have a mercury blueband 4.5hp wich wont cool down. It doesnt have a tell tale. When I ref up it has a very very weak tale. I changed the impellor, cleaned out all water pipes and streaming lines but it didnt help the problem. I tested the waterpump by putting a drill on it and a transparent hose. When I turn the drill, the water pump has trouble getting the water to a certain hight/level. I think the problem might be somewhere here, but I dont know where to look anymore. Can you help me out? Thank.
I would check the lower unit for a blockage. If the drill would not pump water the problem is a blockage or the case is bad around the water pump and not getting a good seal.
Thaks for information The pump rubber, can i put it in which way i want? Or must the wings on the rubber sit in the right direction? Sincerely Micke from 🇸🇪🇸🇪
You are right the copper compounds increase the rate of autoxidation if rubber mixtures. I never thought about it that why. Thanks for the information.

Eu economizaria meu dinheiro.
Is it possible for that side manifold gasket to be bad and water gets in a cylinder through the exhaust port? My bottom cylinder has a little water on the plug when I remove it. Head gasket is not leaking. The motor seems to idle better when there is no water as such when running it in a barrel and the water falls below the pickup.
How hot should a 15hp powerhead run? I'm assuming the thermo opens at 140ish so it should run just a bit hotter? I have great waterflow out the back but I'm worried its still getting to hot.
When checking the temperature with Thermomelt Sticks they use a 125 degree and a 163 degree F, If the 125 does not melt the motor is running to cold, and if the 163 degree melts the motor is over heating. Where do you think yours is at?
@@OmFishing to be honest I'm not really sure. I can hold my hand on the power head for a few seconds after running wot. I'm ganna have to get me some of those sticks never heard of them. I really appreciate the reply and have a safe and happy 4th

Is it possible any of those holes get clogged with impeller particles, and let only small amounts of water through great channel Sir I'm subbed 👍🏻
Yes it is very possible. Then after they are clogged the motor run hot.
How can I test to be sure that the water is flowing through to the thermostat
