First time I have ever seen a scarlet tanager sing and that just cements the song and bird into my brain so thank you for that! Enjoyed coming along on your walk in the woods.
Quite the perfect little oasis you found there in the "hills" of CT. Thanks for the video....quite relaxing to watch. Congrats on the Bobcat experience!!
great day in the woods, Todd. Have you ever considered wearing a mesh camo suit? Lets the breeze through and might keep some of the bugs out while giving you a bit of a camo concealment, too. You can adapt it to whatever you want to wear underneath it.
Thanks for watching! I do use those quite a bit, but usually only when I know I am in a spot where there will not be many other hikers or if I am setting up to sit somewhere. I don't like being the guy in full camp in the woods when other people are around, I find it makes them nervous! They are a great too though and I actually just got a ghillie version for my birthday which has even more concealment!
Ive never been so tense as i was watching that salamander.. Hoping that you got the shot of him with his tong at full extension on an ant! LOVE the shots on the cat.. I have a cougar in my area that i deer hunt at.. hoping she comes out during the time im in the stand..
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately I didn't but that was the first time I was Abel to capture one eating anything in all the times I have seen them. That would be an amazing sight to see the cougar!
I'm impressed you were able to keep cool after seeing that bobcat and get some great images! Well done! Scarlet tanagers can be a skittish so to get footage of it singing was awesome.
Thank you it was a great experience! I was surprised at the luck I had with the scarlet tanagers as well they usually stay so high up in the trees. This one was nice enough o come low enough! Thanks for watching!
Wow that must have been a one heck of an adrenaline rush! You captured some really awesome photos of that Bobcat! I probably would not have been able to hold still enough for the shots.
Congrats on your new Z400TC (looks like I missed noticing that new tool during your last video). How are you finding the reach vs your 600? I noticed you are using the 1.4x with it alot. What made you choose the 400 over the 600? What an amazing day you had. Keep he videos coming!
So far I love it! I find that it is two lenses in one with the built in TC. Gets me the 400 2.8 for low light and the 560 F4. I tend to use the TC for the small birds, but I expected that and have found that adding an external 1.4 doesn't decrease image quality at all either. Really the main reason for the switch was to be able to capture more habitat in my shots. Many of the clients I work for are looking for more habitat included in the shots because that is what they are trying to show, and this lens allows me to do that very well. I am planning on making a video all about this in the near future! Thanks for watching!
Hey there! Great video, I’m a Connecticut local and I’m getting into wildlife photography. How do you find these spots to take your pictures? I just moved out here and I don’t really know any good spots do you have any go to favorites or anything like that?
Thanks for watching! There are a few resources online you can use to find locations. One of which being eBird, it is a free app and there is also a desktop version that allows you to search your area and find birding hotspots where birds have been reported in your area. This is a really useful tool in finding locations to try. Also just go out exploring your local parks and see what is out there. What area of CT are you in? If you are looking for more detailed information I also offer guided sessions where we can go out to different locations and talk all thinks wildlife photography and wildlife behavior. More information can be found on my website with the link here: www.todddewaldphotography.com/private-guiding-instruction
Hi, I have your same setup, so it seems adding the extra TC doesn't effect the image quality , I was thinking of buying the Z800, but now after seeing the image quality from your setup, I be better off adding the extra TC, Is the Auto focus still pretty fast ? Thanks :-)
Thanks for watching! I was really impressed with the quality when adding the external TC. I have found the focusing to still be very fast, and not very noticeable. I even had a chance to test out a 2x tc on it this past weekend and was amazed at how well that worked on this lens as well.

The bobcat was probably looking for a fawn.
It's very possible! Thanks for watching!
