NYC MAFIA CEMETERY St John | Middle Village Queens

- My NYC Mafia history tour today is at the St. John cemetery in Middle Village, Queens, where many famous people are buried. Due to security reasons I was not able to film too much inside of the cemetery, but I filmed from the outside so that I could tell you all this story.
It is understandable as to why permits are required to film inside of this cemetery, as I am sure they get a lot of visitors who are interested in the history of the famous people residing here.
My goal had been just to film the landscape of the cemetery anyway, just so that you could all appreciate just how big the graveyard is, but I understand that I wasn't allowed much further than the gate. Either way, I hope that you all enjoy the story anyway.
St. John Cemetery is an official Roman Catholic burial ground located in Middle Village in Queens, a borough of New York City. Although it is mainly located in Middle Village, the southern edge of the cemetery runs along Cooper Avenue in Glendale. It is one of nine official Roman Catholic burial grounds in the New York Metropolitan Area. St. John, along with St. Charles/Resurrection Cemeteries in Farmingdale, Long Island, is among the largest cemeteries in New York State. Since its opening, St. John has been the resting place of various famous and infamous people in New York City society, such as Mario Cuomo (1932-2015), Governor of the state of New York from 1983-1995, John F. Hylan (1868-1936), mayor of the city of New York from 1918-1925, Geraldine Ferraro (1935-2011), the first female Vice Presidential candidate representing a major American political party, Lucky Luciano (1897-1962), considered the father of modern organized crime in the United States, and John J. Gotti (1940-2002), the head of the New York City based Gambino crime family from 1985-2002.
Also buried here are fitness guru Charles Atlas (1893-1972), slain NYPD police officer Rafael Ramos (1974-2014), and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989).

Wow! Beautiful place ❤🎉 come to say hi and support 🙏♥️ thank you for sharing 👍 watching from Thailand 🇹🇭♥️👍
Fabulous cemetery amazing structures beautiful snowy scenery lovely weather the sky so blue thanks for taking as along have a pleasant week👍❤🤝🔔
Thank you! You too!
What a fabulous azure sky!! I always notice the sky 1st! Such a huge cemetery- do New Yorkers utilise crematoria? Would save on space. I get the feeling that Italians prefer burials just from other films etc. Over here we are desperately short of space for conventional cemeteries - 2 new crematoria have opened near here to cope.
You know what, I don't really know the answer to that to be honest. It probably isn't as big as it is in the UK, I mean both of my parents and both of my brothers were cremated, and I probably will be as well. In the near future I will visit the largest cemetery in America in terms of interments, over 3 million in one cemetery alone. Obviously I will only visit one part of it (the oldest part) but I believe that is also a Roman Catholic cemetery.
When I was a kid on the Lower East Side I used to get my fireworks from a Mafia dealer on Sullivan St. These were firecrackers, cherry bombs etc, and they were still illegal. Had to meet him on the street, at a certain doorway, mention what you were interested in and how much you were gonna spend. Quietly pass him the money, after some minutes, he'd return with your goods. For a kid in the early 1960s, these were nerve-wracking minutes. But it was great to have lived through those moments, as Mafia-connection as they may have been, Mick
Because I live in Maspeth, with the surrounding areas of Ridgewood, Bushwick and Glendale, even to this day I think that you have to mind your P's and Q's. It isn't like it was even 30 years ago, but you know that it is still there under the surface. I live just down the road to Big Joe Massino's club, which remains shuttered even to this day. In Glendale especially, that is like the Italian's Italian neighborhood, hand gestures and everything, lol 😁
Looks so grand the entrance of cemetery!!! The weather is very beautiful and sunny looks better every thing!!!
The winter scenery is wonderful 😍
Nice the story, leastening with interesting!!! There are many dead people there... Like 107
I subscribed to your channel 😀🔔
Happy New Year and all the best in 2022🌟 and your dreams come true 😀
Thank you for stopping by and showing an interest. As you could see, they wouldn't actually let me into the cemetery, but at least it looked nice from the outside.
Thanks a lot friend for some information the great people, politicians and top celebraties buried in the cemetery ❤️🔔❤️
Thanks for watching 🙏
Hello, dear Richard! First of all I still see how much snow is left ... Really a big snowfall in recent days!
And today a wonderful sunny day!
Always nice the effect of whiteness with white snow!
Well, it must be said that a lot of people are really buried here and not only belonging to organized crime, but also politicians and celebrities.
I'm interested in that Mae West story… I'm curious!
As always, your videos are interesting and I learn something new every time. I am waiting for the new video from Williamsburg!
Have a great day, my friend! Cheers and greetings from Italy. Renata
Renata, the Mae West story is one that could be quite complicated. She grew up in Bushwick but her family moved constantly, so while she was the next door neighbor of the Mayor at one time, I also know of two other addresses where she lived in Bushwick. Because she was such a presence in Bushwick it almost seems romantic that people throw her name into every story, whether the story is true or not. If you ever read a story about Mae West that states "Rumor has it", then almost certainly it is not true ;) The day was gorgeous and I made three films on the day, I will probably put the really ling walk up on Sunday. The combination of the blue sky and white snow made for a perfect video.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Yes, I know the Mas West's story.
I love American movies. And history the cinema. I'm a HUGE fan of it.
Waiting for your new upload, Richard!
Enjoy your weekend and see you soon! Renata
Hi Richard ! Enjoyed your talk and the bit of shooting, followed by your graceful about turn, tactical withdrawal when challenged 😊. Good stuff 👍
Hey Don, I was already prepared, I kind of knew that I wasn't going to get very far so I did a walk around beforehand to see what I could film. My script was about ten minutes long so I just needed enough footage for ten minutes ;) It might have been better if I found five more minutes, that way I wouldn't have had to cram the pictures in and double them up when doing so, but overall I am happy with the result.
wow...sturdy and cool, the beautiful scenery there, there is snow too guys, success always and greetings support.nice...👌🌹🤗🙋.from Indonesia🇮🇩
Thank you very much!
Wow ! A new video on the Mafia ! 😁
Thanks for the historical visit and for all these explanations !
Merci ! 😊
There are many Mafia stories in my neighborhood so I will never be short of telling a mafia story ;)
Politicians and the mafia in one place in life and after death.
Dare we suggest that there is very little difference between the two to begin with? 😂
@@richardarthur-nycstories In my country they are the same:) no difference at all.
I like your all tours thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks as always for watching my friend.
Done watching and listening your beautiful story,,keep safe always my friend..
Thanks so much
That's why the smaller the camera the better for some places, you get to film it without being noticed. Cameras like GoPro and Osmo Pocket are popular options
I'm a bit old school though, I'm not splashing out on a new camera when I already have a perfectly good working one, lol 😁 I was expecting them to stop me though, apparently it happens quite a lot in this cemetery.
The entrance to the cemetery looks so grand. Interesting quote, "There are more dead people in Queens..."
Yep, 5 million dead bodies in Queens alone, it will take a long time before the living catch up with them. Let's hope that The Walking Dead doesn't become a reality :)
@@richardarthur-nycstories haha 😃
If that happens that would make Queens 'The Ghost Town".
Hello Richard l. That is beautiful area of Queens. The winter scenery and so much sunny ☀️ weather makes this place very special. I was listening this story with my pleasure. I love when you upload talking videos because you are doing this very well. I wish to hear this story about an actress in some of your future video. Very interesting story about cemetery and mafia 🙂 have a great day Richard 😊greetings
The story of Mae West is quite a complicated one. While she grew up in my neighborhood, her family was always moving around. So many places claim that Mae West lived there at one time or another, it is a matter of finding out what it true and what isn't. Mae herself was known to embellish a story or two as well 😂 Eventually I will do more talking videos, but for now I have hardly anyone watching my videos so I will save most of the narrated ones for later. They take an awful long time to make, so when I get the "Nice video, big like" comments on these types of videos it annoys me to no end 😂
So interesting video! Amazing vlog!
Thank you so much!!
cảm ơn bạn chia sẻ cảnh đẹp lắm những ngôi nhà rất đẹp👍👍👍🔔🔔
Many many thanks
mafia cemetery.. wow.. so unique.. now listening to your story
Thanks for stopping by!!
My grandparents and some uncles and aunts are buried here, as well as a childhood friend and her family. Its pretty much filled up. I lived in walking distance of this cemetary for 10 yrs.
In the section on the other side of Metropolitan Ave, I have filmed the cemetery for almost an hour in past videos. As you probably know though, this section of the cemetery is guarded quite well against people taking photographs and videos.
@@richardarthur-nycstories my family is buried on the 80th street side, across from St. Margarets's Church. They are just inside the gate, not far from the road. They have the graves since the 1940s when my great uncle was first buried there. He came here from Italy in 1895 and became a real estate and insurance salesman. That's how he was able to afford the plot for he and his wife. My grandmother "borrowed" a grave from him when my grandfather died in 1956 because she didn't have a grave. They wouldn't let her put a marker on the grave because she didn't own it, so there is just a blank stone cross to mark my grandfather. I also heard that my grandmother's family didn't like her husband, so that could have been why too.
@@JTRocks4Ever In a video that I did just a few weeks ago I actually took a walk along 80th, starting at the church and heading down to the flower shop. I was on the cemetery side of the street.
Filming the graves for family members that live far away from where their relatives are buried is a great and very kind idea, Richard. The entrance of the main cemetary already looks impressive. It more looks like an entrance to a little compound or village than to a cemetary. A pity that you were not able to walk along all these interesting graveyards. Looking forward to your next video (probably about BTS?), my dear friend. 👏👍
Filming graves for families was really rewarding, but unfortunately it was also frustrating. I filmed dozens of graves and took pictures for everyone, but only like one in ten people would even acknowledge your effort. Many times I filled a request for someone and I never heard back from them. It's a pity really because if they responded to my picture upload they would also find out that I filmed the gravesite as well :) The image that I shared of the K-Pop band is of BIGBANG. They recorded the music video to their song "Bad boy" in Williamsburg. It won't be the next video, I still need to film it, narrate it and then edit it, so the video will take me a couple of weeks to put together :)
@@richardarthur-nycstories It is really frustrating to hear about the people not giving you any feedback. And I guess I just confused BIGBANG with BTS. They all look the same.😅 See U soon, my friend.
Very good video my friend
Thank you very much
Thanks a very interesting Graveyard tour, so many famous people were buried there.
I enjoy visiting graveyards. There is one in Queens that has over 3 million people buried in it, I hope to go there one day soon.
Very nice your shared video i was really amazed congratulations keep sharing your beautiful videos. Thanks for sharing please stay connected .,❤ ,,❤,, 💖💗..❤

Wow Richard! what a wonderful walk Richard! That was a great idea of the pictures on screen.... Stay warm my friend.... Happy heart's day!
I got the idea from a fellow UA-camr :) This was harder because all of the images were different sizes. When I do the music video tour it will be much easier to insert images.
@@richardarthur-nycstories Hey, that’s a great start... we’re getting better as time goes by... we’ll be surprised of our capabilities later😄
Hello frnd. Good afternoon. I was listening this story with my pleasure and so interesting. Awesome and good stuff. St john cemetery the entrance of the main cemetery already looks impressive and interesting graveyards. Vice President of the United States Geraldine Ferraro. (1935.2011). I am going to looking forward to your next vlog video. I fully enjoyed like always....I want to say thank you so much to sharing us. Have a nice Sunday.
Many thanks my friend. I enjoy visiting cemeteries but I couldn't get into this one :) In the next few weeks I will pay a visit to the largest cemetery in America in terms of how many people are buried there. 3 million in total!! Obviously I can only visit one section of it when I go.

My great grandfather Joseph Johnson and Mary Colligan Johnson, my grandmother Grace Johnson Radlein and grandfather Ernest Radlein are all buried in St. John's Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens Richard. It is a most beautiful and picturesque Catholic cemetery.
Great grandmother Mary Johnson.
Yeah unfortunately they caught me with the camera so I didn't get a chance to film inside, though I did two long videos in the adjoining section across the street nearer to Atlas Mall.

Can you help me find my great-grandfather Lorenzo Ruisi? B:Dec 24, 1871, D:Jun 20, 1931. Supposedly hes buried at St. Johns.
I would recommend emailing the cemetery itself, they are likely to have those details.

Great experience Richard, thanks for the tour.. i know one name.. Vito Scaletta..
I had to Google the name 😂 I was not aware of that Gangster ;)
Love the tour and history! This sounds like the IT place for famous burials. More dead than live? 5 million!! Very interesting.
There are two main areas with the biggest concentration of cemeteries. The cemetery belt between Queens and Brooklyn, and then Calvary cemetery which has 3 million burials, the largest number in the United States.

Hi there Thank you for this wonderful share ~ such a beautiful view ,Great video shared. Keep it up and stay safe ,my friend.
Thank you very much for the comment!
That is some amazing history...Hmmm, not sure how I feel about Queens now...lol...I think I might feel as though someone was watching me in that area...
It isn't as bad now, but even back 20 years or so ago I would watch my tongue. It still exists, and hits still get put out, but you don't read about the turf wars in the papers anymore. It is more underground nowadays.
My grand parents and my aunt and husband are buried there… but they are not famous. Still I’ve spent much time at their grave sites in the late 40’s and 50s
The next time I go I will enter with my camera in my bag :) I understand why they stopped me, but I would have liked to have gone a bit further.
Looks like a cemetery dedicated to celebrities or as you said "go to cemetery" for members organised crime!
Yeah, it was a pity that they didn't let me sneak past the gate ;) I kind of expected it though to be fair.
Hello. The cemetery buried many famous people so it was difficult to get into the filming. But okay, this video is still great. The sky was clear, and the houses and tombs lay underneath the white snow. This cemetery is big and it differs from other cemeteries in that there is a lot of traffic here. Thank you for sharing. Have a nice weekend!
I was expecting them to stop me from filming, so I had already done a walk around the cemetery to see what I could film if that happened. All I needed was 10 minutes of footage because I knew that was how long my script was going to be. 😀
Very nice video 👌👌
Thanks a lot
Good job my freand
Thanks for the visit
Hey Richard, my family has a plot in that cementary, non-mafia of course!
I only wish I was able to go inside and film, but I understand why they don't want that. I still captured enough footage to tell the story.
I can get you in riding in the car. My family's plot is literally 100 meters from Zaccaro (Geraldine Ferraro's husband's family) plot! LOL! There is one JUGE mausoleum on (what I like to call "millionaire's row) that is devoted to someone named Vascimini whom was a private that died in World War One. As hard as I try, I come up with snake eyes, no matter where or how I research!@@richardarthur-nycstories

Victor L'Episcopo Anfuso is a relative of mine, his son victor jr married kathy shea, daughter of william a shea, vic and kath would wind up owning the new york mets until citi bank pressured them to sell.
It is always nice to tell a story that reaches someone on a personal level. Unfortunately I couldn't film inside of the cemetery due to the amount of people who, like me, try to film there. It must be a bit of a nuisance for them if I am honest. Maybe one day I will go back in without my equipment, carrying only my cell phone.

Oh, it's a cemetery that needs permission to shoot inside. The size of the St.John cemetery seen from the outside looks very big. It's an interesting cemetery with many celebrities buried in it as well as 'Carmine Galante' from the previous video.
I look forward to the next video that will feature the K-pop band's music video.😀
The cemetery is super big, I only scratched the surface. Even if I had made it inside I would have had to walk a really long distance to get to the main section. You are correct, Carmine Galante is buried here!! As is John Gotti who was buried along with his son, Frankie. His son was accidently killed is a car accident, and the man who was driving the car disappeared and was never heard from again!! The K-Pop video will be a couple of weeks away yet. Even though I hope to film it this week it always takes a while to do the narration and editing.

St. John's is a Catholic cemetery. That's part of the reason why so many mobsters were buried there.
Decades ago Christians were far more aware of denominations. Protestants had their own cemetery. So there actually fewer options for Catholics.
Thanks for the video.
That would make sense!! I guess so far my experience has been multidenominational cemeteries, other than the obvious Jewish ones. They are always fun to walk around for a heavily tattooed man, guaranteed that someone will call the cemetery manager on me every visit :) I wonder if Catholics still have to use a Catholic cemetery or whether they can used a mixed one now? I will have to look into that.
@@richardarthur-nycstories We are Catholic but my grandparents are buried in "Lutheran Cemetery" on Metropolitan in Middle Village. I think it's now "All Faiths Cemetery". By the time my grandfather died in 1979 Christian denomination was not an issue. But decades before when the first mobsters needed a cemetery plot it was. My childhood friend Cecelia lived in the caretakers house of the Jewish cemetery on Metropolitan at Flushing Ave because her parents were the caretakers. That house was creepy.
@@keithbarbaro7590 Yeah, I have actually filmed a story in the All Faiths cemetery. I did a feature on the General Slocum disaster and filmed the memorial that is located in All Faiths while narrating the story. The Jewish cemetery I have only filmed the exterior. Is the caretaker house the one by the gate? If so I tried to film the date on the house but I didn't really catch it. On that day I had just finished filming in the cemetery directly behind the Jewish one, the Linden Hill cemetery.
Yeah ...what a mess! 🤪

My family is there as well
I can understand why they didn't let me in with the camera :)
Just wondered all these mobs celebrity were buried at St. John cemetery ? Did thier family not aware about St. John ? Subject apostle found to be of good moral character , not killer as what these mobs doing during thier prime years in Mafia. To me it is an insult to injury St. John mixed with notable , gangster . Their family should look for better place to bury thier loved one.
There are some churches here in New York that refuse to conduct funeral services for these guys, but for the most part these are family plots bought many years ago. Gangsters have been buried here for over 100 years now, from all different families, so I think that it is more that a family knows that they can buried their loved one here because the cemetery has always done it.
❤❤👍👍👍👌
👍
And where are the feared Amberg brothers gang?
Those guys are buried in Springfield Gardens which is quite a distance from me. Jewish cemeteries can be difficult to film in, I filmed Arnold Rothstein's grave in a previous video and some woman called the cemetery management on me.

Isn't it something else , these mafia guys were murderers and criminals of all sorts , they die or get murdered and have a nice place for their remains, I never did anything like they did, busted my ass working, got old ,sick and broke, it looks like I'm gonna end up in a potter's field where nobody will ever know my name , damn ! looks like I was in the wrong business when I was younger. 🤷♂️
Sorry my friend, for some reason this comment ended up in my UA-cam spam folder, no idea why they would flag it as spam? I'm right there with you, I'm going to end up on Hart Island, there's literally nobody left to claim me, lol. What I have always found unique about St. John is that the gangsters aren't buried by affiliation, and in fact some of the gangsters are buried close to the gangsters who killed them. Quite a bizarre cemetery.
