Not even mentioning how Kanye 100% out performed him. Disappointing
Idk I didn’t expect much from an album called “certified lover boy”. To be fair, the more I listen the more I like the album but there certainly are songs in here I had to delete from my library
Alot of Drake's audience doesn't pay attention that deeply to his music. They don't care about the beef, or the context which makes so many of these songs seem like a rehash of prior material, I wouldn't be surprised if 2 or 3 of these records turn into hits.
Isn't the fact that Drake has sounded the exact same on every project since IYRTITL his main appeal for his current audience? They want low effort comfort food to put on repeast shuffle in the background day in and day out without being distracted by the music.
It's an outstanding album to have playing in the background when you're hosting a group of people you're really not interested in. The sound is so shallow, the conversation is almost guaranteed not to delve into anything authentic and personal. You won't have to worry about any heartfelt sentiments being shared to this tune!
I think it's because drake hasn't really evolved as a person. Like J.Cole, Kanye, Jay-Z grow every album because they're in a different mental space every album. Drake is still trying to find a "good" stripper who wants to settle down and then complains about them wanting his money. Like just grow up and pick better women. There's more to life.
J Cole has kinda been stagnant since 4 Your Eyez Only. Ngl I never liked KOD and his new album is alright. It’s not really that good and I’ve listened to everything J Cole has released

I saw a more realistic interpretation of the cover that looks great! I thought the cover was a joke for the day before and the real one would surface for the drop. Boy was I wrong.
I heard this quote that was said to Tyler, The Creator by Pharrell Williams: "There's a difference between getting old and getting older. Getting older is getting wiser, while some people get old, they just stay in the same lane doing the same thing for too long." In reference to this, I definitely think Drake is getting very old at this point. P.S - That car battery line was amazing. It had me in tears 😂
This is what I’m trying to say about someone like Eminem vs JayZ. Eminem is still on the horrorcore, obscene eminem-esque corny lines while Jay Z is now rapping about growth and his life and relationships. Don’t get me wrong, a nice well written Eminem or jayz song that pulls from their own decades long formula is good, but by this point, I’m tired of hearing Eminem (or drake to this point) rap about the same things over and over again.
@@Dooms_Day_King as a hardcore Eminem stan, I agree with you And it's not even the dark subject matter but his new music doesn't sound too good. His beat choices are bad now and that side b was just so unnecessary. Kamikaze was his last strong project. He can still make amazing music and he proved that with Darkness. I just don't understand why he doest make an entire album with songs like Darkness and Castle/Arose
@@Dooms_Day_King valid, but at least Eminem is still lyrically/technically very fucking insane, and at least sounds motivated on most songs, his content may be hit or miss, but at least he has aspects that can/do save it. Drake doesn't, all Drake has ever really had is sound, and now he doesn't even have THAT anymore what with how lazy and unmotivated he sounds, plus the oversaturation of auto-tune for a majority of the tracks. Plus lyrically/technically Drake has always been pretty bad, I'm not tryna dick ride Eminem or anything, but while Em's music is flawed, there's still saving graces and skill put into the craft, none of this is true for Drake as of right now.
@@joshwilliams6517 Drake has plenty of sales achievements, yes. But not nearly as many accolades in terms of critical acclaim/awards. If we’re purely going off of numbers, then Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber must be some of the most brilliant artists of all time then huh?

I couldn't bring myself to pay that much attention to a whole album to critique it in such detail. Props to you for torturing yourself for our entertainment and information :D
This album is exactly what Kendrick was talking about from TPAB. A “talent show” where some artists just turn out garbage music, cut the checks and bounce.
I remember a scene from Kendrick’s music video for “These Walls” where terry crews and Kendrick act out a scene for a talent show. Technically it wasn’t in the song, but that scene really resonated with me
After scorpion and now this I'm pretty convinced that drake might as well just stick with releasing catchy singles rather than a whole album. Like clb and scorpion have so many tracks I give 0 shits about.
I was hoping for NWTS cohesiveness. All the songs fit with each other , that album is so good it sounds like a strange dream . Your right ,,CLB is just another playlist
@AJ thank you 😂 he already did the “story telling” on so far gone and take care and nothing was the same. People just can’t sit and enjoy music. Ridiculous
He has a lot of fans that all want different things . Singing, rapping , dance hall , Spanish , UK drill ? Every one wants different stuff and he’s trying to sell records not speak about any topic
I feel like Kanye always takes mad risks and makes bold choices on his albums, where Drake always plays it safe. I always appreciate it when artists show confidence and boldness.
I’d literally rather have a completely awful album where he at least _tried_ to do something different rather than yet another middle of the road hour long boring nap
Drake was taking risks early on by singing (because not many rappers were singing back then) but now every rapper is singing. He did take mild risks embracing tropical dancehall and afrobeat sounds, that risk paid off but apart from that I can’t say he takes many risks. KANYE? 😅he jumps out the window on every release, he’s so unpredictable. LATE REG to GRAD to 808s to MBDTF to YEEZUS? That a run of albums that sound nothing alike. It’s like he builds a house of sound. blows the house up. burns the ashes. and builds it again. He’s a madman!!! Drake just sticks to his tried and true formulas (which is fine as along as him and his fanbase are happy with it).
If Drake made an entire album that sounded like 7AM on Brittle Path and You Only Live Twice he would excel so much. He keeps making these shit ass mediocre R&B and Pop songs that do not hit at all.
Well that’s on you and I love both of those songs but a Song like get you better with ty dolla sign is the R&b drake I LOVE, I can make a album worth of those types of records from across his discography
@@exotic_blitz7747 Deadass. I wouldn’t even hate the album so much if it were like 16 songs or something but mans said fuck it and added so much garbage filler.
As a self proclaimed Drizzy super fan, this album was so bad it fucked my day up. Mans is really getting too lazy. The features he did before this (Betrayal, Seeing Green) tricked me into thinking he would be spitting something interesting. But at this point I’m just disappointed.
The album wasn’t for the hardcore rap fans. It’s called “certified lover boy” for a reason. Idk if you have noticed but he switches off between a rap album and a soft album every year. We’re on the soft album this year.
That really speaks alot of him if he cannot tell anything interesting despite being able to do virtually anything he wants, at this point im waiting for him to just go full depression on the next récord, he just looks tired on everything he does, he doesnt seem very genuine with himself, Kanye may be crazy but he has no fear of being himself even if it get him on bad shit
@@mv03dl100 yeah it doesn’t sound like a drake song…where are the melodies? Where’s the song structure? drake is better at songcraft than future so this song just feels unfinished to me.
“Said you a lesbian, girl me too” is the ultimate Drake line when you think about it. It’s him trying way too hard to be relatable to the point of ridicule, like when he takes on those fake accents and tries to act tough. He’s a panderer with a serious identity crisis. Drake spent so much time building up that “Free Smoke” persona, which was shattered by Pusha T, that I’m not even sure he knows who he is.

Drake's career is seriously heading towards DJ Khaled territory at this point. Painfully boring, unambitious music, collaborators outshine him, tone deaf. I feel like he peaked in 2015/16 and just never quite hit this level again.
DJ Khaled has the ability to at least put together really good artists and producers and make music that's objectively good. Drake just... Doesn't even do any of that.
@@DanielMartinez-xz8nj The difference is that Scorpion had bangers (God's Plan, Mob Ties, Nonstop, In My Feelings). CLB has literally 0 bangers or very good songs.

Little Simz will be getting the first "Very Good". A review where Melon won't put much effort into reviewing it as it's obvious as to why that record is a 10/10
Drake, while being a catchy pop rapper, has barely left his comfort zone since Views. If Donda is a messy lobster dinner, Certified Lover Boy is slightly burnt toast
@@ianjudge5572 Well the thing is Kanye carried the feature in a way to with his production like off the grid wouldnt work if it wasnt that amazing production
@@ianjudge5572 Does Donda have a lot of features and does Kanye sometimes take a back seat to let those features shine? Sure. But take "Off The Grid" where he comes on and keeps up with both younger rappers and delivers a verse with the same effort put into as the people he's bringing on. That's the difference between letting features carry your project and simply having a lot of great features. The same can absolutely not be said of CLB, just like Fantano points out in this review, the features on this album feel like they're giving so much more of a shit than Drake who sounds like he's sleepwalking through the entire tracklist. Acting like the two are the same because they both have features is such a surface level criticism.

Drake likes to throw rocks and hide his hand. He antagonized Ye for 3 years and plays victim when challenged back. Aubrey sucks at acting like he’s unbothered .
As much as I hate Drake, Kanye fucked with Drake for years simply because he felt threatened by him. He said so himself. Drake didn’t really publicly retaliate until Push which made him seem even more petty, since Kanye was doing it behind the scenes
I think what really sunk this album is the somewhat lack of thoughtful introspection from Drake. I know that he's moved on from replicating the sound of Take Care and Nothing Was The Same because he wanted to shift from the perception that he's a sensitive guy, but his life has significantly changed since those albums and this would've been a good time to reflect on his successes and failures. In fact, I think CLB could've worked as a concept album the way the Weeknd did with After Hours. Perception has always been a thing with Drake, (e.g. Sensitive Drake, Jamaican Drake, Actor Drake, etc.) so why not embrace that perception and work to completely dismantle it through the music, like developing a character arc and such? Maybe I'm thinking too hard about it since we already have the final product, so it probably doesn't matter in the end. It's just that Drake's latest catalogue of music is making me lose respect for him as an artist. CLB doesn't give me the impression that he's working on maturing his sound or even himself.
there are some lyrical bangers on this album. what makes clb great is it's variety. there's something for every situation on it. i guess that's why months later, everyone is still listening to it & the hate has died down significantly. it is actually a great album and im surprised how much im going back to it considering my favourite drake era was from 2009-2015. maybe he knows what he's doing and the haters are slowly catching up. man just sold another 63k in his 9th week.
I really don’t understand why some artists seem so complacent in making the same music. I understand the business aspect and such, but drakes at a point where he can create any kind of album he wishes and it’ll get plays either way. He may get a huge pay day with this album. And may find gratitude in just making music for certain people and norms etc. However, he’ll never be seen as a “GOAT” to me, because there’s not much versatility or anything challenging about his music; or at-least not anymore.
It's more confusing because his most distinctive LPs tend to be his most critically acclaimed. I know this type of music does the best numbers but surely something more interesting would still go diamond AND get a much better critical response?
@@oliverbrain4790 he’s settled n not willing to challenge himself. Image n persona are too satisfying. That’s why I rock with the k dots and Yes more. Drakes genius is less artistic n more formulaic at this point. Used to love him early on tho

@@Dooms_Day_King as a hardcore Eminem stan, I agree with you
And it's not even the dark subject matter but his new music doesn't sound too good.

Drake was taking risks early on by singing (because not many rappers were singing back then) but now every rapper is singing. He did take mild risks embracing tropical dancehall and afrobeat sounds, that risk paid off but apart from that I can’t say he takes many risks. Honestly. He a whole weirdo sometimes
