  • The ever evolving city of Dubai could be enhancing its Downtown Dubai area as architecture firm Znera Space have created a new concept called Downtown Circle that shows a giant ring surrounding the Burj Khalifa.
Standing at 550 metres tall with a circumference of 3000 metres, it consists of five pillars which will support five levels containing housing as well as public, commercial and cultural spaces.
The circle itself would be formed by two rings held together by a continuous green belt called the Skypark which would contain waterfalls, tropical vegetation and various floras.
Downtown Circle’s Skypark would also feature areas to harvest rainwater solar power as well as a system that stores carbon and filters out pollutants as part of the urban ecosystem.
The concept was of a vertical city and was created during the pandemic by Znera Space co-founders Nils Remess and Najamus Chowdry.
“We wanted to go down to the basics of how gated communities were established as a very horizontal built environment but you can’t have that here because of the dense urban fabric of Dubai. The best way to explore and practise this concept was in Downtown itself.” said Chowdry speaking to The National.
The Znera Space co-founders had taken social and environmental issues into consideration in the projects design process.
“When Covid-19 hit hard, we thought a lot about suitability and how can we change things, and how we can create better urban planning. We looked at aspects such as garbage disposal, food production, traffic problems, pollution. We put all these things together and came up with the concept.” said Remess speaking to The National.
The inspiration for the design could also have come from the One Ring seen in the Lord of the Rings movies (minus the magical inscription). While it may not possess the power to control the people of Middle Earth, it certainly has the potential to make Dubai a self-sufficient city.
“Usually cities begin with agriculture and then continue with urbanisation. Today, many big cities are faced with the problem of how they can add more agriculture. This is one of the aspects we wanted to add into this concept - a self-sufficient city.”
Znera Space have also implemented a transportation system that would operate in the outer perimeter ring. A tram holding two pods would be able to transport passengers around the Downtown Circle at a speed of 100 kilometres per hour.
The designers hope that this new concept will serve to inspire new ideas for gated communities and skyscraper homes.
The downtown circle is a plan of the Dubai 2040 vision masterplan.
it could be built in 2040.
