I bought an old iPhone 4 off of Ebay 7 months ago, so I can use if only for iMessage and Facetime. I love it. I got rid of everything else on the phone. I use my laptop only for reading news and emails 99%of the time. I'm so over social media! It feels so good to use a tiny phone again. It's just nice and simple. My mind even feels less cluttered.
1 Write a list of all the apps that you want on your phone - WANT not need but also not nice to haves 2 3:40 write down every app you NEED - this is a big one for me, pretty sure I knew this before this video but this is nicely summarised, I think for me its the musts - emergency communication + calling + texting as even my doctor texts me now (although it may just be optional and if I really run into trouble if there's a link or something as long as I can see the texts I will be able to contact them to email me it or such instead, especially since I think I'll be using my laptop for most things such as this and my actual phone phone for personal, on-the-go use) - so yeah for me maybe its not even full featured modern texts and calls and a single colour display might even be able to handle it - but this stuff is the kinda thing you just have to find out, especially by forcing yourself to find workarounds. But wants like note taking, LIGHT web browsing - which is something I just have to keep investigating ways to do while trying to maybe use extentions and the like to block or limit photos and videos, or even recording audio or video sketchy situations or taking photos of notes etc. - and then finally nice to haves, like a full keyboard + qr code scanning but with this stuff again could be fixed with limit testing how I would deal with it out of nessesity - e.g. using a program on my pc to qr code scan. ^ but yeah before you can explore allll the solutions you need to know what you really do actually need, the wants can be added BACK later when you have really truly explored the workarounds - this is why I think I will go to a dumb/feature phone with little or no data on the sim and then a laptop which will handle most of the phone stuff even if I will have to awkwardly point the webcam at a QR code now and then - get freaking creative. 3 4:09 Delete all unnessesary apps - this follows from no. 3 - once you have an idea of you both need and want from your phone you will know what can be offloaded elsewhere or even deleted ENTIRELY - I really really urge you to disregard those niche situations like oh what if someone wants to play games on my phone or I'm stuck at a busstop - worstcase scenario you'll live and best case you'll actually gain some time to think, or if you really really wanna keep something like a language learning app, I think it is duolingo that has a laptop/desktop/browser version you can do if you truly feel the need to use the downtime. ^But again, weigh an app that really doesn't impact your life that much vs the truly life changing benefits ditching the smartphone can do for you. And again with a laptop sidekick the worse case scenario is you have to spend 1-2minutes opening it on bluestacks if it isn't shortcut to desktop/taskbar. but most of the time with taking this into account with sleep settings, a fingerprint sensor on your laptop and frequently used apps from bluestacks shortcutted and most likely bluestacks running in the background (which I think is worth it as you are replacing your whole phone after all + worse case if this kills your battery long term you can buy multiple for the price not owning a smartphone will cost you, or even get a much better laptop if you use midrange or high end phones) 4 4:26 Organise apps in folders - honestly this tip seems meh, maybe I dont get it? others are good though 5 5:13 notifications - fricken updates can fuck off, again this is the thing, hopefully most apps are not on my phone but litterally either on my laptop or on bluestacks or the browser on my laptop and I'd check them a certain 1 or 2 times each day. So the main things I actively WANT to have notifications is my work/uni email, I think also my more proffessional gmail and then once I am certain it will not create bad habits if that is even possible I could add my spam email if and only if I can only get emails from like google security to check noones breaking in but I may need to bite the bullet and just accept all emails from the security address but that may change so this is something I need to check at a scheduled time every few months probably about the same time I also change my passwords. 6 5:59 do not disturb - when my sleep cycle is not pure trash I will do this - maybe someones made something which adapts it to when your alarm is? But at the same time its also like if I just leave it on all the time or even from 23:00-05:00 theres still like scenarios like nights out where I just wont be receiving notifications and will be too drunk to think to check, its difficult - I will have to think and ask around about how to use such functionalities 7 6:16 set downtime - Again, like I think something that could even just turn my phone fully OFF (hopefully automatically, I would ideally after all still use puzzle alarms and such on my phone) during sleep time - at least until I have become unaddicted and can then go and just have it record my sleep/if someone breaks into my room or something or let it backup files to my server or laptop but yeah, the priority now is stopping this thing from harming me and getting rid of bad habits and additctions so the cool, even I'd say niche stuff like that can come later. 8 6:42 - I think a delay before opening apps and make the HABIT of knowing why its being used but atleast having a filter for as many as possible - I never even considered how I feel after using an app, I might need to be more introspective. 9 7:35 - I think this is covered by no. 3 but again I'd add, can it a) be offloaded to your laptop or b) in someway modified to exclude social media websites like youtube so that you'd never just turn them off really quick when your laptops not nearby. 10 8:25 - for me its just reduction - like can I just have this social media on my laptop? Can I use the old.reddit redirect to make it less addictive? can I get rid of the main feed on this particular website (which is the main addictor) can I get rid of certain notifications or pages (e.g. NSFW pages on reddit for me bring me down errr rabbit holes, also political stuff pulls you in, can be fun to PURPOSEFULLY go through, but this is not stuff you want to be fighting to stop yourself engaging in - anything that gets you to comment, get it off the feed. I also moved discord off my taskbar and into my web browser as an attempt to get rid of it - also get rid of chrome notifications - the suggestions are endless. 11 9:00 Greyscale - Heard so many people say this maybe there is something to it > Never tried this but you know what? I'm sure there's someway to set it up on whatever device I use to make it make my phone last longer and I really do not need the colour, so heck, I'll try it. Maybe with the option to turn it on if I do realise I'm missing things on certain websites or on my emails, maybe someones already made something for that maybe I need to make it. otherwise, I just need a shortcut which would be easy to make with just shortcut - change setting and just make it one of those things I check each month or code it to turn off after 5 minutes 12 9:51 have an accountabilitbuddy or someone doing this clense with you - doesnt have to be to the same degree but super important for all types of things like this
I didn’t know I could change the display to grayscale. I just did, and it’s so different. I like it. One reason I chose a relatively small phone (an iPhone “Mini”) is that it’s less of a big, “immersive” display to stare at, more of a small tool that I control.
I definitely needed this, thank you. I’m so addicted to my phone. I finally deleted Facebook but I still can’t get off my phone. Also your little girl is adorable especially when she’s making fart noises lol
I never looked to see my screen time and then yesterday I looked and saw that last week I averaged 4 hours a day....So I deleted everything from my phone except phone, text, calendar, and maps. #9 on your list is KEY!... Now I need to do the same with my laptop.
Great topic, Zach. You hit on several areas to improve on managing phone time, productively and responsibly. However, an iphone 11pro comes from apple- dumb. Maybe try a Galaxy? (I couldnt resist). Great video!
I am using Android phone for decade. I had when 20 a flip phone. Actually never needed it, but you had that pain in your ass, like everyone else in my class is using it! LG, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi, Huawei... I had plenty of these. These drops and immediately screen is bad or something. I bought new one, now it is battery bad... I am not a heavy user. I wrote without a phone these apps: Maps, Music, Camera, Calls, Messages and Contacts. I can do all of them w/ like dumb phone, mp3 player, camera... You save a lot of your time. With Maps you can prepare at home...
There's a really big booger hanging out of your nose! Keeping it simple..starts making lists, try deleting "unnecessary" apps on ANY smartphone!!! Most can't be maybe they can be disabled. The "simplest" way is gat a flip phone and do your "business" on computer.
I’ve kept UA-cam my banking app and a web browsing with a direct link to open chat gpt and my email app I don’t need much else and the greyscale will help

youre on a social media website though?
People don't use youtube like instagram though.@@RadiantCyrus
I've never seen an infant so angry about notifications.
"You are what you constantly think about."
I've never thought of myself more than the moment I shut off the firehose of information flooding my mind.
Good for you, man, to do this so early. I did not. My boys are grown.
All is not lost, though. I'm doing it now. Thank you for your video.
Good video. Really like your relaxed delivery. The music is too loud though and made it hard to hear. Cheers!

Awesome video ! Not a lot of people do this and need this
That wasn't a background music. It was a foreground music.

Great video! I love that your baby was in it! Thank you for making this.
love the instrumental version of kings kaleidoscope in the background!
I like the kings kaleidoscope in the background :)
Cheers mate, i like your chill delivery

You can use an actual calendar for the calendar app so it’s not that useful for me
I gave you a like for the baby 👶 😘 so adorable.
Make more videos dude. Love your channel!

Thank you so much your tips!
Kings K 🤙🏼
She was making fart noises over the "importance" of police lights actually! 😳 What a genius!!

This is nice one 👍
very good advice
Yes the smart phone is a tool. A big tool.
Dillema, if you watch this video in grey scale, you'll probably won't get to the end.
I am on Greyscale since I got a smartphone 🙂

Really?
Salamat Po Pare
Thnx BRO!
