I like the idea of frame work laptops, but I think taking one dongle that has a bunch of different ports you might need would be easier than carrying a bunch of different expansion cards incase you might need one
Yeah, that's probably true. What I see the value in though is that everyone can choose their interfaces and have the freedom to change them in the future if needed.
The not hiring gthe sticker guy part didn't made sense to me. LIke companies put the stickers on the laptops because it gives them discount per unit from the manufacturer as it sort of advertises the processor or the GPU for which the company gives discount to the system integrator. And I feel the reason why framework can't put a sticker on their laptop is because their interior components can be changed with other parts like intel cpu instead of AMD so it doesn't gives assurance to the manufacturer that their sticker is actually serving purpose and thus Framework is required to pay extra to Intel/AMD/Nvidia.
The screen seems a bit weak and coming from a XPS with that near infinity bezel is hard to stomach. BUT I really like this laptop and this might well be my next laptop since the XPS 13 decided to remove the 'esc' key. AMD is a huge positive selling point!
7:27 "being able to keep this for 5-6 years" I thought people wanted to keep this for 10-15 years 😅 Just being able to replace the storage and battery will double the life of a laptop. Other parts simply don't break that often
This video mentions having the 61Wh battery. Do you have to buy that separately? Because on their website there only seems to be an option to get this laptop with the 55Wh battery, unless you pre-order the version with the new higher resolution 120 Hz display which obviously wasn't around when this video was made.
I like the idea of this, especially the configurable ports, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of savings. I'm able to keep my macbook pros for 8-10 years because I buy them with a lot of RAM and because they are built well enough to last. I've never had a non-mac laptop last more than 4 years before it physically breaks down. It seems unlikely to me that the Framework laptop would last long enough (through enough upgrade cycles) to save enough $ to beat a long lasting macbook. You can get more performance per $ from non-macs but over time the well built macbook becomes the better value.
It is true that Macbooks, when they run well, can last a long time. But repairability is where the Framework has a huge advantage. Unfortunately Apple has set up their ecosystem to where you have to have an Apple professional repair it for an insane amount of money. For me I love the peace of mind that if a part malfunctions or breaks, I can easily get the part and slap it on myself. I just find it an added perk that you can always upgrade little bits of it later as they improve.
If you buy a framework, i dont know why you would want a pre-built model since the whole concept is to to allow you modify and upgrade, and if youre hesitant to do it then this is probably not for you. My next laptop is definitely going to be a framework, unfortunately its going to a while.
Please put some separators on the bezel to protect the screen, otherwise is gonna end up like Linus', with all the keys marked on it. I use little patches of Bicycle Inner Tube with double sided tape to increase the separation when the lid is closed
Most folks wear headphones or are using Bluetooth speakers or something. All laptop speakers are fair too poor. Always have been. I love the DIY aspect and just trying to decided if I go 13 or 16. Its use case is portable work when I am on film set and need another computer besides my Lighting Console (custom 4U Rack Server Ryzen). Or as a tracking back up for lighting. Having the ability to have 2 display ports is huge. Without needing a dock. I am a purple girl but that lavender is blah I agree with you. Thank you for the review ❤
funny, removing the macBooks from the battery comparison :P FYI my daily use M1 Air battery prediction keeps maxing out the 20h @ 50% charge after 3 years
I love my M1air but its soldered in ssd is really going to offend me when it dies and I have to put the whole laptop in the bin so I really hope framework is successful and influences the mega companies to stop making designed to fail products for no other reason than more money. Although laws like the Eu passed on UsbC seem more likely to acheive that.
As a Canadian shopper, I am unfortunately priced out on this. I love the idea, but I paid $1240 for a 7840u/32gb/16" ThinkPad, whereas the 13" framework would be $2200... that's just not workable
Back on the Intel 12th gen revisions I was considering the Framework to a refurb 14 M1 Pro...the M1 won out for a lot of reasons but let me tell you, it was a tough decision. Now with the Ryzen board I'd be an even tougher option. I'm not editing video, just photo's and I have children who *love* to touch my laptop with wet, greasy hands or bang other objects on it. It gives me anxiety because you're not replacing anything on the MacBook. So, I still think about selling the Mac and getting the Framework. I'm just too invested in MacOS at this point.
I still perfer the screen on my Lenovo Slim 7i Pro X. It floats almost over the edge and is super glossy with almost no border. This Framework has a silver frame around the display for some odd reason which would drive me crazy. I like the rest of it other than that.
Framework makes a good 7840U laptop which shows great efficiency and performance easily, while other OEMs give us trashy AMD laptops with bad bios and high idle power. Why are other OEMs trying to make AMD looked bad?
I need to get a laptop to take on the road, light LR editing and very quick and easy 4k edits in Davinci Resolve 18 Studio (using proxies) (DJI air3 DLOG-M and Canon R5 vids) would this laptop be able to handle that? Looking at the AMD 7840U with 64GB RAM. I have my desktop pc for the heavy lifting with photo/video editing I just need something when away for weeks at a time. I need something ultra portable and reliable to take with me. Mac is not an option and I love the idea of this being upgradable.
@@mattdamarell Good. My first computer was Apple, I was a kid, my father paid it. Since then there is something I don't like about Mac, although they are shiny and performant. I can't tell exactly what.

Yeah, that's probably true. What I see the value in though is that everyone can choose their interfaces and have the freedom to change them in the future if needed.
First thing I do when I get a new laptop is remove those obnoxious stickers on and below the laptop. Second thing I do is install Linux.
Want to know how to spot a Linux user? No need to worry! They'll tell you.
The not hiring gthe sticker guy part didn't made sense to me. LIke companies put the stickers on the laptops because it gives them discount per unit from the manufacturer as it sort of advertises the processor or the GPU for which the company gives discount to the system integrator. And I feel the reason why framework can't put a sticker on their laptop is because their interior components can be changed with other parts like intel cpu instead of AMD so it doesn't gives assurance to the manufacturer that their sticker is actually serving purpose and thus Framework is required to pay extra to Intel/AMD/Nvidia.
the stickers should only be for marketing so I does it really matter that it is the correct processor inside?
The screen seems a bit weak and coming from a XPS with that near infinity bezel is hard to stomach. BUT I really like this laptop and this might well be my next laptop since the XPS 13 decided to remove the 'esc' key. AMD is a huge positive selling point!
My god lavender is the best! I immediately ordered one, and hope it is as quiet as you described.
Let me know how you like it when you get it!
dang, that camera and mic quality. thats a wow for me
Damn that webcam is really good. Mic also sounds good for a laptop mic.
Speakers are one of THE hardest things to tune for laptops. I'm amazed that FW13 speakers sound anywhere near as good as they do, to be honest.
Remember the times when all laptop cpus were socketed and swappable?
7:27 "being able to keep this for 5-6 years"
I thought people wanted to keep this for 10-15 years 😅 Just being able to replace the storage and battery will double the life of a laptop. Other parts simply don't break that often
Power and mechanical issues are also common... SSD and HD from my previous laptop are all that survived!
I've always had a little Intel bias as I've always used them for my laptops. This AMD-based version looking pretty dang strong though!
Same lol
If I had 2 USB-C towards the back expansion bays. Where would you put the HDMI card?
If you buy a framework, i dont know why you would want a pre-built model since the whole concept is to to allow you modify and upgrade, and if youre hesitant to do it then this is probably not for you.
My next laptop is definitely going to be a framework, unfortunately its going to a while.
Glad you covered the AMD framework !
Hope you enjoyed it!
Top review !
why not buy an extension port that makes 1 usb c into an ethernet, hdmi, usb A, etc etc instead of carrying all these extra cards?
Genuine question.
Between Apple's M series chips and AMD's chip Intel has been taking quite a beating lately.
Please put some separators on the bezel to protect the screen, otherwise is gonna end up like Linus', with all the keys marked on it. I use little patches of Bicycle Inner Tube with double sided tape to increase the separation when the lid is closed
Barebone 13'' 7840U in US - 1169 USD -> ~1100 EUR
Barebone 13'' 7840U in EU ~1451 USD -> 1369 EUR
Well...
Video and microphone sound ok, Matthew (not horrible, not great).
Ya the webcam is ok and the mic is not the greatest
Another reviewer mentioned that the screen wobble got worse in 6 months. Sure there is way to tighten it somehow, or replacement hinges.
Just wish their was room for a slightly wider keyboard with dedicated home, end, pgup, pgdown keys
I safely assume the speaker is replaceable, am I correct?
i love it when a reviewer says that "the speakers are awful" and here I am listening to this on an ancient X220 😂
Can anyone tell me how hot the SSD is going to get? Does it throdel?😅
funny, removing the macBooks from the battery comparison :P
FYI my daily use M1 Air battery prediction keeps maxing out the 20h @ 50% charge after 3 years
I love my M1air but its soldered in ssd is really going to offend me when it dies and I have to put the whole laptop in the bin so I really hope framework is successful and influences the mega companies to stop making designed to fail products for no other reason than more money. Although laws like the Eu passed on UsbC seem more likely to acheive that.
I’d buy one in a heartbeat if its screen was nicer. Other than that it seems perfect.
Why does the display only get to 300? They advertise it as 500 nits?
Great video!
Thank you !
Repairability.. Should mention it as well. Every component can be ordered seperatly
Anyone know if the Linux kernel supports the framework motherboard and extensions?
I am so down for a sticker free deck!
once theres an option for 1920x1200 120hz or higher screen option, framework is my next daily driver
they have the 16in gaming version. 165hz 2k display. Im on preorder waitlist
@@wabberjockybrah3983 i do feel 2560x1600 is bit too much for 13.5 inch but def perfect for 16 inch
Yes. That is for the 16in.
Hoping one day the company would have a new display panel 120hz for the 13in.
Between this and an X1 Carbon, which do you prefer?
As a Canadian shopper, I am unfortunately priced out on this. I love the idea, but I paid $1240 for a 7840u/32gb/16" ThinkPad, whereas the 13" framework would be $2200... that's just not workable
Where was that from, if you don't mind me asking
@@bunyrabbit directly from Lenovo Canada. I had a webpage price detect monitor running and they had a $600 discount last Saturday evening.
Hey! What website is that for price detect? TIA!
Corp ITs reach a consensual to adopt desktop reuse and upgrade eco framework and a common infrastructure??
The specs for this machine say it has >400 nits of brightness on the display, does your unit not match that claim?
Maybe a power saving mode...
Can you put the motherboard into the 16in case?
I still perfer the screen on my Lenovo Slim 7i Pro X. It floats almost over the edge and is super glossy with almost no border. This Framework has a silver frame around the display for some odd reason which would drive me crazy. I like the rest of it other than that.
Weird. On the website it says the screen is rated at 400 + nits.
Framework makes a good 7840U laptop which shows great efficiency and performance easily, while other OEMs give us trashy AMD laptops with bad bios and high idle power.
Why are other OEMs trying to make AMD looked bad?
i am curious if i can improve the speakers with measurement and some dsp.
Why no Mac? games? I'm a Windows user, but I'm asking myself this question regularly...
I have no interest in gaming but I also have no interest in mac. Just my preference.
@@mattdamarell Good. My first computer was Apple, I was a kid, my father paid it. Since then there is something I don't like about Mac, although they are shiny and performant. I can't tell exactly what.
I think they have doby seriffed speakers now but I’m not too sure
if it can achieve 4W idle / web browsing power consumption, I may get it. But it won't beat the M2 chip in that regards ....
Can it be used without a battery in clamshell mode on AC?
Why would you do that?
So you CAN update the cpu on this ????
I like this, but the low screen brightness and crappy speakers, are killers for me. Like I have a T480 and the speakers are the worse thing ever sompared to my other laptops, best ones are the ones in my M1 16inch, but I would rather daily a linux laptop
The cost of the laptop on their webpage is 880$, and cost of upgrading the motherboard module (with decent specs) is between ~500$ to over 1k$, u might as well buy a new laptop in 2 years instead as updating anything on top of the motherboard will likely cost u more than the laptop itself, like the upgradeable memory though
Yeah they started out quite cheap but quickly got VERY expensive
