Finnish collared axe restoration

- Done the traditional finnish way with boiling the handle in water and using a finnish style wedge - snake head wedge. Open the full video description for more information.

Boiling the axe handle for 30-60 minutes makes the wood soft - the axe head can go down a bit longer on the wood handle, the snakehead wedge can a lot easier split the wood and expand the wood above the axe head like a big "mushroom" making it impossible for the axe head to fly off doing use. If done right will the axe head be a perfect tight fit on the handle after a few days of slow drying. This kind of wedge have a hook and it will not be able to jump up doing use.

Most asked questions:
1. What wood do you use?
Elm - but I prefer ash. The Finnish tradition is birch for the axe handle and pine for the wedge.
2. What oil did you use?
Tung oil.
3. What do you use to clamp the wood?
Shaving horse and bowl horse.
4. What axe?
I handle a Finnish axe made by Kellokoski model number 18. It is not mass produced any more. Use a russian axe made by Zik to shape the hande, not mass produced any more.

You have the same respect for the tool and the wood you work with that I saw in my dad; he was a finish carpenter. It's a special relationship that real craftsmen or women have for the craft.
Thank you for this lovely video Rune.
Donna
Cheers from Finland! Your videos are pure relaxation!
I just got one of those axes with a cracked and loose handle, so I'll be doing the same. Thank you very much for pointing out the wedge strategy and the boiling of the handle!
Every time i come onto youtube i find more stuff from your channel that is new to me! Its amazing! Its almost like you're teaching us everything we need to know to thrive if society collapses!
The second part was a joke of course, i love your channel.
This is so interesting for me. Especially recently I have just longed to live more simply and in the midst of nature. Your videos are a wonderful insight to that. That's a beautiful axe you made, I'm from Finland so the title caught my attention.
Primitive technology meets every single other bushcraft/restoration video I enjoy.
Great content, look forward to more.
I'm glad to see that you didn't mirror polish the entire head like so many "restorations" do now. I've never seen a cool collared axe; fantastic work.
Greetings from ...USA ... North West Georgia ............ Love your videos ..... You have such a gift !!!! I look forward to all your videos ...... You make things look so effortless ........... VERY IMPRESSED ...... THANK YOU FOR SHARING A LITTLE OF YOUR WORLD
gorgeous work, as always! i love that Finnish snake head wedge design, i'll be using that from now on!
That is one beautiful axe Rune. Is really like the shape of those Finnish axes. I am beginning to repeat myself but another excellent video and the extra information is helpful too. ATB Marc - Belgium

Man I love your jumpers so much... And just the whole channel overall... ❤️
Your color grading is without a doubt my favorite out of any I have seen
True craftsmanship and art form combined. Greatly enjoyed watching
Man this grindingwheel is so cool. Great video. Pure realaxing. Cool to see this old technic. I have never seen something else. Would be a pity if so old techniques would die out.
I AGREE FULLY, THAT ANTIQUE TECHNIQUES CAN NOT END, BEYOND THE TOOL STAND WITH INCREDIBLE AND BEAUTIFUL FINISH.
Why should you work harder then you have too?
Theorcman2008 and that is the problem why we are loosing all the old technics. Dont get me wrong. I am not against modern technic. I also try out every new stuff. But it is good to know the old stuff.

Preserving the culture and tradition, yes?
Good thing I’m a 25yo who’s decided to live their life like this to master crafting the Olde way. Reliance on EM energy to run all your equipment is a huge fatal flaw our society has. How do you get stronger? By doing. Cut the weakness out, build yourself up.
I had never seen the multi-directional split arrangement you used with the wooden wedge to retain the axe head on the handle. Looked to be very effective in locking the end of the handle to the upper end of the head, without requiring a metal wedge. Clearly an improvement over the more common single split with wedge. Greg
Absolutely love these videos!!! Your woodworking skills are incredible!!! 👍👍👍

Hello, I like Finnish Axes and have refinished a few Billnas Axes, 12.3, 12.2 1133, 7. I have used Birch to make shaft. On one of my axes I used the 'Snake Wedge' like you demonstrated here. The Finnish People now a lot about woodsmanship and you can see that in their design of axe and skills in the forest. I find the Billnas and Kellokoski axes need a different technique in processing wood, different to English and American Axes. I enjoyed this video, thank you WS.
It is because they are not poll balanced like English or American axes but they are blade heavy. For me it gives a little bit more power to the cut. and that socket and downwards swooping blade gives lot of control when you are choking on the axe head when carving.
You mean Billnäs i actually live very close tho the place its wery small village in raseborg
Hei. Greetings from Finland. I really like your videos even tho i really dont understand them but you make them interesting:) keep up the good work!
Rose :3 uwu
You’ve been inspiring me for a long time now Bertram
Hello! It really is a work of art!!! It is a pity that in our lives this is not found...
Great clip man! Also such a beautiful look axe.
That's great. I didn't know about boiling the handle and driving in a long wooden wedge.
Currently I have a handle of ash tree in preparation. It's for an axe head I bought on a flee market. I'll fix the handle the way you showed here. ;)
WOW fantastic job!!
This is your 3rd video I am watching today and I forgot to click the subscribe button on the first and now I did it because you deserve it. Wonderful.
Hyvin on opiskeltu Suomi kirveen historiaa kun käärmekiilan teit näppärästi! Hienoa työtä! 🎅🏻👍🏻🪓🇫🇮
Excellent work 👍
That is so cool. Good job man!
Excelente trabajo gringo!, a la vieja escuela!, saludos desde Argentina
Hey!
Great video! Very atmospheric. feel the life of another nation.(life style)
Fed video Rune !
You made a cracking job of that mate..................Nice one
Your subscribers are from Europe and Sout Pacific Asia and with that thank you for good beautiful video bless you
I like the wedge method, and I like the side profile of the head shape. Those handles look like they transfer a lot of shock to the hands due to the thickness. Looking at my old American axes the handles are very thin to give them flex. Thanks for posting this video, if and when I pick up a Billnas or similar head I'll hang it using the method you demonstrated with birch.
Cheers!
Beautiful! You are an artist. 👍
Excellent Adventure friend, greetings from Colombia- America
Great job!
Good video too.
