I just used this step by step, had to figure out a few things that weren't options for me but maybe it was just my MAC laptop. Either way I think I still did it...can't thank you enough! Trying to get old childhood DVD's that were made off original VHS type tapes onto this DVD saved electronically somewhere. Thanks so much for such a thorough tutorial.
So grateful for this!!! Back in the day you didn't need this intermediary software to decrypts DVDs. My decade old iPod died and with it all my golden era Simpsons episodes that were ripped from DVDs via Handbrake over 15 years ago. Until I found this video I was baffled why the new MP4s were coming out all scrambled. Mystery solved!
Great and informative. Concerning the below reply about “no… /usr/local/lib” file location on Mac’s with M1, I have a 2017 MacBook Air w/ Intel and I had the same issue, couldn’t find that path anywhere. I did have /usr/local and it had a lot of “lib” type files. I just created a “lib” file pathed after local and it worked.
I had the same problem. Couldn't find the file mentioned. I took your advice and just went and created a "lib" file. Worked perfectly after. Thank you so much :)
So a Mac with an M1 chip and handbrake installed will decrypt DVDs without any additional software? I just got a new-in-box 2022 MacBook Air with the M1 chip.
Great video! Thanks for making it so easy! It was so intimidating from the websites I found, just text instructions, that didn't make sense to a non-techie!
Thanks dude :) you’re a life saver!! I didn’t have a usr/local/lib thing, so I put the dicrypter in a lib folder I made in the local file. It worked 👍👍.
thats my current hang up. do you mind explaining more about where you put it? I'm not a computer person, just feeling my way through this with youtube videos
I can’t get passed the download decrypter/file location.. I clicked the download link on my Mac and then waited a minute and then checked the file with usr and it wouldn’t come up when I typed in the /usr/local/lib. Any help?
Great Video! but it isn't working for me. I have a MacBook Pro Max M1 and am somewhat new to the Mac world, so I had to create the lib folder and copied the file there. I never got the prompt I saw in the video after the first prompt about scanning. Will it not work if I had Handbrake installed first then downloaded the file and placed it in the newly created lib folder?
You don't explain, did YOU create this "/usr/local/lib" folder? And how are that software and Handbrake working together? I don't see anything about installing the Decrypter into the Handbrake app!
Hi Kaptain Tech, thank you for your video tutorial! I am copying a video that is not encrypted so I skipped the lib part. I am assuming that is okay. I got to the last step where the save as file has a m4v extension however. Do you know where I might have gone wrong? Thank you
***APPLE SILICON USERS*** To install the decryptor: 1. Navigate to /usr/local/ using "Go to Folder" in finder 2. Right-click and create a new folder and call it "lib" (without quotations) 3. Copy and paste the decryptor into this "lib" folder
I have an old game on a CD-ROM, one windows and one mac version. Will that work with that too???? I really wanna continue to play the game but I haven't been able to for year because computers are now too modern... I have a M1 mac laptop 😕
Hello. I do not have a folder as you described. I did however have success ripping and saving a dvd, Young Frankenstein, last night before I downloaded the Decrypter . Using Handbrake
Thanks for making this video. I got the DVD drive and tried doing the steps that you suggested. The audio playback on my Mac is choppy and when I plug the external drive into my android-based projector, the file isn’t there. Are you available for hire? I called several IT companies offering personal support to no avail.
Thank you for the simple, clear explanation! Does the same process work for Blu-Ray as long as you have a DVD player that will read it, or do you need another decryptor?
I have 5 DVDs I’m trying to rip. 2 worked using this method, the other three don’t. They are either stuck on the menu screen, or the picture quality looks choppy like a damaged VHS (when it looks fine in the regular video player app)
So easy to follow!! Question: I have some homeDVDs that I need to add to iMovie and this is a great help. BUT--I don't need to save entire homedvds, I only need short chunks to save and then add to iMovie. Is there a way to save only parts of the dvds when HandBrake is working its magic?
Still can't get it to work. I'm using Apple silicon (Mac mini with M1 chip). There was already a usr/local/lib file which I guess is weird since it doesn't exist for most with Apple silicon? Anyway, I installed the decryptor there in the lib file. Already had Handbrake installed. No warning popup about the decryptor from Mac. Tried a bunch of DVDs and they're all still blurry or have sound removed etc. Help please?
This is a very well done instructional video, but I haven't succeeded in copying my DVD because I couldn't get past the "cannot be opened because it is from an unidentified developer" message. I see you address this in your reply to Oc Face Paint, but the additional instructions didn't help me. Can you please detail how to do step 3 "copy and paste"? Meantime, I'm wondering if it's possible that a DVD simply cannot be copied. The DVD is a video someone did of an eight minute presentation of mine and I can only watch it once. To watch it again, I have to eject and reload. FYI, I'm on a MacBook Air OS Monterey 12.3.1 and the DVD files are "VIDEO_TS.BUP VIDEO_TS.IFO VTS_01_0.IFO VTS_01_1.VOB VIDEO_TS.VOB VTS_01_0.VOB Thanks in advance for any guidance you can share.
@@calmensonkidsbooks ahh I see. My iMac is an older version and can’t be updated to the latest so it’s not able to work with handbrake unfortunately. 😔 thanks
I appreciate all the effort but it never did work for me. Using am M1 Mac and yes I followed the additional info for where to paste the file. I never was able to see my disk in Handbreak after that or before any modifications.
@@KaptainTech thanks, yeah I even tried installing libdvdcss-1.4.2.pkg and showed a successful install but it still doesn't allow me to make my dvd's into digital format
I too had same problem and I watched entire video 2x - he only addresses this with handbrake - I tried the same "technique" but it didn't work - I'd imagine because this isn't an "application "
When I open Handbrake, with my DVD in and DVD drive plugged in, the DVD drive doesn't come up on the left hand. I tried it with an external harddrive plugged in and that didn't show up either. My mac doesn't even seem to recognise the DVD drive at all. Can anyone help?
Have you tried opening finder. Then clicking the top left on the word finder. Click settings. And make sure the “external disks” option has a blue check mark. I couldn’t find my ssd for the life of me until I was just messing around with settings. And make sure the option for “cds, dvd’s, and iOS devices” has a check mark next to it?
December 5th, 2023: still one of the best tutorials out there on a common problem. Many thanks.
My movie came out very laggy
what did you do????? the decrypter won't work for me- says it won't open because its from an unidentified developer

Process doesn't work starting at the 3:28 mark. The process needs to be updated after that part because nothing unlocked.

do we need home-brew to do this? The folder /usr/local/lib isn't showing up.
or is /usr/lib the same thing? I can find that folder but would have to use terminal to move files to it
