That's a Darwin Award right there. All he had to do was not go towards the lion.
I was just going to say that. I mean really, you can't identify three predators right in front of you?
Not if you're a juvenile heron that had presumably grown up in a city heronry, stuck in water deep enough to keep lions from reaching the viewers. They often visit pelican/penguin enclosures at zoos hoping for scraps, would guess it ended up in the wrong one, panicked and got sogging wet ie couldn't fly away.

Classic
The heron had a lot to process. It was hunting, unaware of the stealthy and quiet cats surrounding it. The bird has likely never seen such creatures, ever. And once it realized it might be in trouble it panicked. To take flight it had to move away from the wall which was sadly the wrong direction. The best bet would have been to wade right back where it came from, but we all make mistakes in fear.
"Noella & Scott" Apparently there are no herons like that in Africa. The zoo is poorly run to not have had preventative measures so that a heron unknowingly finds its way into the lion's cage.

Crazy how I literally just passed that video and went straight to this one😂😂😂
They never lose that hunting instinct.
It's nice to see someone spell lose correctly. Too many think it has two o's. Makes me wonder how they think loose is spelled.
They don't but they eventually lose hunting behaviour in a coordinated effort. Every house cat can catch a bird, but only a pride of lions manages to coordinate so swiftly to isolate a zebra out of a herd and then take it down tactically with a minimal risk of getting hurt.
And they may have lost that behaviour
You can take the lion out of the wild, but you can’t take the wild out of the lion! 😂

Soo I've rightfully so seen quite some comments about how small this cage is. This cage was build in 1928, revolutionary for its time, but waaay too small and very outdated. That's why soon they will be building a new enclosure 10 times the size of this one. It should be finished in 2023. It's no freedom, but still a bit of a brighter future for these lions. Thought maybe some of you'd like to know.
I wonder if it's finished now.

Okay how long has she been in captivity? I’ve been watching multiple videos of her hunting and she has a much higher prey drive than the rest of the lions. Very intelligent and enjoys the hunt. I also love how she doesn’t like to share her spoils 🤣 She is wild at heart! I feel confident she would successfully hunt small prey in the wild - which is highly unlikely for animals raised in captivity!
If there was a human she would it him, too, I am sure! Just for fun!
Most domestic cats hunt in exactly the same way.
ua-cam.com/video/4G6e4TaJxkI/v-deo.html .
What do you mean? The male took the bird away from her
Typically, the females do the hunting actually in the prides at least. They take the young male and females and teach them how to do it. So the males can take care of themselves when they are kicked out of the pride until they establish their own pride.
This is like those stealth games where you crouch and the enemy goes "must have been the wind"
i just dont understand why the heron went towards the lion
Probably because large predators have disappeared from Western Europe for hundreds of years except maybe wolves, and them latter on, so that large birds have no experience with avoiding bears.

It's cool to see that the lioness's predatory instincts and skills are still intact. Also, it's interesting to see how the male then takes the kill from the lioness.
Like it should be....
The females do the hunting in a pride! While the male patrols the land protecting the pride! If the male is present he will eat first always then the females then the cubs! In that order always
@@jedsteelwell2354 Not true. The females don't eat before the cubs, in fact, the cubs are allowed by the male to eat with him, you can find multiple examples here on youtube.
@@reinsaxony4623 This only happened with very tolerant males, and not if the Male is hungry. Seeing a few examples of exceptions on UA-cam doesnt make it so.
@@eddiem12eddiem12 Not true. What evidence do you have for such a thing being an exception?
Hell, the most aggressive lions ever, the Mapogos, are recorded to allow one of their sub-adult sons to eat with another of their prides and protected him just like in this video here.
The main goal of a male lion is to pass his genes, surely you accept at least this fact? It makes perfect sense why they would allow their cubs to eat first, so they can grow strong and perpetuate their bloodline.
Of course that depending on the circumstance, the male(s) will eat first alone, but that's again for their cubs' sake, because if there's only enough food for them to recover their strength, they have to eat, otherwise they won't be able to protect the cubs from another coalition of lions.
Amazing that the bird could ignore SEVERAL DEADLY LIONS.

@@Sky-zk4el it can't be that big of enclosure tho
@@Sky-zk4el it's still wayyyy to small for lions. No way they can properly exercise in that space.
Your right about that
I agree.
I’ve seen my cat do this so many times, it often makes me wonder what levels of self awareness lions truly have. Especially after learning some pride in Africa has developed an alliance with the baboons of the area. These lionesses know to sit there and pretend to not notice until the bird gets close enough but it’s all in their body language that their posed to strike. Even in the Savannah, they coordinate hunts. One lioness usually charges in and the others run up from different places. But the main lioness ensures that the prey runs in that direction. They coexist in family sectors with a hierarchy and have assigned roles within it…We don’t give lions nearly enough credit when it comes to their intelligence.
Lions deadass became friends with a bunch of baboons lmao
Their hunting success rate is only 20%!
If you are wondering whether any animal is self aware then you are part of the paradigm you are complaining about. I don't think it's correct to assume animals think like computers and make exceptions for elephants or dolphins or ravens or lions or whatever is the flavor of the month for some journal that makes the news.
All animals consciously interact with their environment and make decisions we would call free will if we made them, but most people just assume they are on auto-drive due to anthropomorphic bias.

It's good to see that apart from the hunting skills, the male lion also haven't forgotten that he needs to be dominant and bully his ladies. If he didn't it would be a worrying factor, not that lionesses must lose food, but because that would mean the zoo has had a negative impact on the lion. Why....? Simple. Lions need to be lions.
The lioness crouched down and made herself very small from the Heron's perspective. I think the heron thusly was curious and underestimated the lioness until it got closer and realized "Maybe, I'm not safe here"
