my favorite singer of all time saddle tramp is my favorite song. but el paso is the ringtones on my cellphone. love to see reactions i get when it rings. thanks for sharing
Awesome song! My grandpa went out west after WW2 playing in western bands back when everything followed the rodeos. He told alot of stories about Marty and some of the other folks that made it from those days. Marty was actaully quite fond of my grandmother, but she came back east with my grandpa. Of course this was years before he got famous, but pretty cool none the less!
for all who posts marty's songs i thank you. my favorite singer of all time and to me the greatest voice ever created by God especially his western ballads. you live on in your music marty!
I have loved this song since I was a child. Listening to this song is like going to the movies. Everything is so clear. Thank you for posting. I wish my mom would give me the 45 she has.
@ErikaDeeAnne He won a Grammy for it in 1959. I am a child of the 80s, and this song got played so often at our house when I was a kid that I had no idea it was already more than 20 years old. Good music is timeless. This song is a true classic.
something is dreadfully wrong...not. One of the most beautiful cowboy songs ever. I almost will push Rawhide aside for this tonight. Thank you for the post.
"Back in El Paso my life would be worthless Everything's gone in life, nothing is left. It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden, my love is stronger than my fear of death" This song has line after line of perfect imagery. I love it more than words can express.
@jeddyhi It is nice to know that I am not the only one who feels this way. If we could only turn back the hands of time. At least we can step back in time to wonderful music like Marty's El Paso.
Don, Marty, and Bobby were awesome together! They just don't make singers like this anymore. these guys had a special friendship and it showed in their music.
ONE MORE VERSION OF EL PASO, THIS TIME LIVE. As we mentioned yesterday, this awesome Marty Robbins song first appeared on his Gunfighter Ballads album (1959) and the single reached #1 on the pop charts in 1960, quite unusual for a country song. This clip comes from the movie Road To Nashville in 1967 and I believe is the closing song. Some concern has been expressed by my friends that I'm turning country and disowning my punk roots. I'm here to say Have no fear! Your humble scribe will punk out in his next post.
I love all the many versions of this song that Marty sings. Notice how Bobby picks up on Marty's mannerisms and head movements in this one? They've done it together so many times, it's not surprising, but haven't noticed it in any of others.
Okay - there are better versions (sound) - but I love all his gunfighter ballads and his songs about love and death - so much memories for me - thanks!
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl. Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina; Music would play and Felina would whirl. Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina, Wicked and evil while casting a spell. My love was deep for this Mexican maiden; I was in love but in vain, I could tell. One night a wild young cowboy came in, Wild as the West Texas wind. Dashing and daring, A drink he was sharing With wicked Felina, The girl that I loved. So in anger I Challenged his right for the love of this maiden. Down went his hand for the gun that he wore. My challenge was answered in less than a heart-beat; The handsome young stranger lay dead on the floor. Just for a moment I stood there in silence, Shocked by the foul, evil deed I had done. Many thoughts raced through my mind as I stood there; I had but one chance and that was to run. Out through the back door of Rosa's I ran, Out where the horses were tied. I caught a good one. It looked like it could run. Up on it's back And away I did ride, Just as fast as I Could from the West Texas town of El Paso Out to the bad-lands of New Mexico. Back in El Paso my life would be worthless. Everything's gone in life; nothing is left. It's been so long since I've seen the young maiden My love is stronger than my fear of death. I saddled up and away I did go, Riding alone in the dark. Maybe tomorrow A bullet may find me. Tonight nothing's worse than this Pain in my heart. And at last here I Am on the hill overlooking El Paso; I can see Rosa's cantina below. My love is strong and it pushes me onward. Down off the hill to Felina I go. Off to my right I see five mounted cowboys; Off to my left ride a dozen or more. Shouting and shooting I can't let them catch me. I have to make it to Rosa's back door. Something is dreadfully wrong for I feel A deep burning pain in my side. Though I am trying To stay in the saddle, I'm getting weary, Unable to ride. But my love for Felina is strong and I rise where I've fallen, Though I am weary I can't stop to rest. I see the white puff of smoke from the rifle. I feel the bullet go deep in my chest. From out of nowhere Felina has found me, Kissing my cheek as she kneels by my side. Cradled by two loving arms that I'll die for, One little kiss and Felina, good-bye.
@mdhbigdog The guitar work is fabulous. I think it's under-appreciated. Thanks for the name of the guitar artist. Is he also the artist on the recording?
I'm sure that's when the names of the last 8 episodes were released - sometimes it's fun to look at them in advance to predict the events... kudos to James Herbert for connecting the name 'Felina' to this song and predicting the meaning. Only wish he had spelled the name right!
I was basically watching breaking bad and that's how I got to this song. I love it. I just want to ask what is the genre of these types of songs, for example 2pac plays "rap" songs. i want to find songs just as good as this. so if any one would be willing to help me out here please do and tell me the kind of song this is so i can listen to more, or if you can tell me artists that play similar songs to this.
@ammariepaul I know what you mean, growing up I hated Marty Robbins, Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, etc etc, all the stuff my mom listened to. Now they are high ranking on my ipod.

I think this is Marty's best version of this song.
@ErikaDeeAnne He won a Grammy for it in 1959. I am a child of the 80s, and this song got played so often at our house when I was a kid that I had no idea it was already more than 20 years old. Good music is timeless. This song is a true classic.

Viel Spass!
Himmlisch! Stimme und Titel kannte ich, den Namen leider nicht!

I'm sure that's when the names of the last 8 episodes were released - sometimes it's fun to look at them in advance to predict the events... kudos to James Herbert for connecting the name 'Felina' to this song and predicting the meaning. Only wish he had spelled the name right!
Absolutely fantastic! It doesn,t get any better than this. Can you tell me from what show this clip was taken? Great post man, more more more.........

El Paso is the most beautiful country song. Who's the 2 back-up singers. I've seen them in alot of clips.
Bobby Sykes and Don Winters i think. They were with him a while. That trio was killer
What year did this song come out?
@Shadepuppy That's because it is.
"Brilliant"
How did you know a month ago?!
Couldn't you rectify the fact that you have misspelt Marty Robbins?
Walt never used Lithium in his recipe.
@ednamax33 Are you sure it was benny hill? steve martin did one with a chimp once on a specail.
@ammariepaul I know what you mean, growing up I hated Marty Robbins, Kenny Rogers, Merle Haggard, etc etc, all the stuff my mom listened to. Now they are high ranking on my ipod.
