    In figure skating and ice dancing, a three turn is a basic skating turn that is performed on one foot. The turn is executed by lifting the free foot off the ice and then crossing it in front of the skating foot. The skater then shifts their weight onto the free foot, which causes the skating foot to turn and cross behind the free foot, creating a three-shaped pattern on the ice.
    There are two types of three turns: forward three turns and backward three turns. In a forward three turn, the turn is initiated by skating forward on one foot and then executing the turn to change direction. In a backward three turn, the turn is initiated by skating backward on one foot and then executing the turn to change direction.
    The three turn is a fundamental skating skill that is used in a variety of skating elements, such as spirals, step sequences, and choreographic movements. It is also a key element in the skating test system, where skaters must demonstrate proficiency in executing the turn in various directions and at different speeds. The three turn is often one of the first turns that beginner skaters learn, and it provides a foundation for more advanced skating skills and techniques.

    So true. I did this (or multiple 3turms on the same foot one after the other) and it helped a lot

    Perhaps get those arms working for you and do a good check to help control rotation. That’s the first thing I would teach.

    This week I did this. It's wonderful, and it has made 3-turns easier and less scary by far; and to my surprise, it is fun now.

    make sure to always practice both inside edge (L and R) AND outside edge. (L and R) i forget to practice inside edges most of the time

    Why can't you save these reels to your ice skating playlists? That omission in the UA-cam feature set is a good reason to just publish short videos rather than these reels that you can't save. You also can't play this in slo-mo.

    Translation of this video to English: Having trouble with your three turn? Just practice three turn exercises. If you stick with it long enough, you'll nail it and then wonder why there was ever a problem!

    • @rickr530
      @rickr530 6 місяців тому

      No, it's considerably more interesting and challenging to switch circles left, right, left, right than to just keep practicing what you've been doing. Translation is more like "Try to achieve something more difficult and you'll find that you gain the easier thing for free."

    I just hit my first three turn today. My skill arc is 1: Can't do it at all. 2: Hit my first one. 3: Can do it but it's really lousy. 4: Do 100 of them each practice session and slowly get better. 5: Rock solid (but out of scads of skills I"m practicing, I only have one, count it, one, at this point). Out of that arc, I hate step 1 the most. I keep working and working and not getting anywhere and I feel like I'll never get it. Step 2 is like EPIPHANY!!!!! Step 3 is good: Last week I couldn't do it at all, this week I can. That's a good feeling. Step 4 is not good: Ok, I did 100 hockey stops two days a week for the last 6 weeks, shouldn't I have it down like a pro by now? Maybe this is as good as I can ever get? Maybe my right skate blade is crooked? Maybe my feet are born at a bad angle? Maybe my hip simply won't flex as needed. Maybe I have zero talent and am never going to get it. So today I'm at step 2: i hit my first three turns today. BONUS!!! The key was following the advice of an instructional UA-cam video and practicing the three turn on the wall. At first it was: hold on to the wall tightly, still drop the free foot. Gradually it got much better, after 100 reps I was holding on to the wall lightly and hitting it smoothly. Felt good. Then out to the ice. several tries, and BINGO! By the end of the session I had hit ten, both sides, and feeling great. Now on to step 4!!!!! Plus I can't wait to try this "back to back" tip, and i think I saw the coach doing this, and also this seems similar to the "backwards infinity/figure 8" that is a life goal for me!

      Every time I think it's just me, I find out it's a common experience :) Yes, progress in skating is more of a stairstep function than a linear one. You sit at a plateau of frustration and grind out failures in practice until, one day, you just get it and move up the the next plateau.

      It's a mohawk. Look up videos on that and get it on your practice list. Get some good "toes out/heel-to-heel" stretching in. I was able to pick up the mohawk easily.

      It is not difficult. Try it and this will be a change how you see 3-turn if you finally manage to do it.
