Never thought I'd see the day when these two have a civil conversation
We honestly need more of this. The culture of if you're not with me, you're against me or everyone's an opp really needs to stop. Two people with different outlooks can have a civil conversation.

Doc Story: A few years ago (18-19 season) I was in college covering a Clippers game for my sports journalism class and after the game we got to go to Doc’s postgame press conference. Doc knew our class was there and called us out and asked that the mic be passed down to our row. Somehow, the mic ended up with me. I was nervous as hell but I asked him a question about the teams performance versus outside expectation and he gave me a very thoughtful and detailed response and thanked me for the question. It was a small gesture but it meant a lot to me. You can say a lot about Doc as a coach but I will always think highly of him as a person.
That just tells me he knows how to play the game....which is the criticism that follows him today
@@exitscreaming4637 So him being somewhat nice to a person and giving a detailed answer to a question means he knows basketball? What an odd criteria. The man played in the NBA for several seasons and has coached several teams. Clearly he should know the game. But none of that means he isn't a bad coach. Which he is. He only won with a loaded Celtics team. That team should've won more actually. Doc is terrible when it comes to making adjustments. Fans have watched it for years now and players who've played for Doc have said he makes no adjustments during games.
Doc Rivers has the gift of empathy. He just knows what life feels like from the other guys shoes. Hes a good man.
@@exitscreaming4637how is knowing how to play the game a criticism??

Doc Rivers needs to get back on TV. He's brilliant on tv.
He is now
Embiid has the same problem Tatum has. A) takes too long to make his move when he gets the ball allowing the defense to set against him and B) not recognizing before his move where the helps coming from.
Inversely it’s why Jokic is so dominant. He does both well.
Interesting that they both have the same exact trainer. I agree tho.
Both are horrible decision makers. Something hard to learn if someone just focuses on shooting and dribbling on off season😂😂😂

Joel is a bad passer, and while I think it can be improved with good coaching, what Jokic does is innate, he just have a natural feel for it.

@@lv20213 good point. he speaks openly about players without it coming off as disrespectful.
He's so open because he blew FOUR 3-1 Leads
He has no choice
Dock is definitely baffling
Is also baffling how he doesn’t take any blame for losing because of lack of strategic adjustments
In that Houston game with Joe Smith and Corey Brewer making good shots, the game changer was actually 38 year old Pablo Prigioni. He came in, got a couple of steals off inbound passes, brought in his experience and calm demeanour and had the best +/- of the game. He was so good that Doc brought him to the Clips the following year, following his tradition of "I'll hire the guy that beat me"
Glad to see you guys talking again
It's refreshing to see Doc's honest take on this year's 76ers team without totally going PR on us like he did in those Press Conferences. From what I gathered it looks like Joel needs to have a better relationship with his teammates. Not saying he's a selfish player however he's too lowkey and not outgoing enough in the locker room. This has always been a problem with Embiid it seems which is why guys like Tobias had to take on that role when in reality the BEST player needs to be that leader.
No one is better at passing off blame than Doc Rivers

I would've liked Bill to ask him to grade himself as the 76ers head coach, why did you withdraw your name from the Phoenix job, why don't you believe in the development of young players ? Do you think it's a coaching problem losing 10 straight game 7s? Do you think you have a lack of adjustments issues? Why haven't you been able to get out of the 2nd round in over a decade? Questions of that magnitude since he was being so honest
Great pod did not expect doc to be so transparent

I’ve spent a little time around the Sixers and I can tell you with certainty that the “spend time with your teammates off the court and show them that you love them” was an issue. The team seems so separated from James and Embiid when it comes to events and that’s if Embiid and Harden show up at all.
Unfortunately for Joel, it seems like his body just isn’t built for a full regular season and playoffs. He is such a massive dude who plays pretty physically demanding basketball and it takes a toll. Jokic’s style allows him to be effective in the regular season and then go completely nuclear in the playoffs.
I almost think he should just play more bully ball. Doing all these step backs, crossovers, etc can't be great for his legs. Back guys up in the post and shoot the jump hook!
Phila has surrounded Embiid w/ slop he's got to kill himself at both ends every game..... man has the #5 career scoring Avg in NBA history & Dominates on Defense & contrary to these narratives Embiid's playoff & Reg seasons stats are identical 27 pts 11 reb 3 ast vs 25 pts 11 reb 3 ast (look it up) & his Free Throw attempts are the same too 10.4 vs 9.9 in the playoffs.....

Joel was more concerned with making sure he campaigned for his mvp than he was with winning the title. It was very clear the mvp was the single most important thing to him this year.

Should have persisted with Ben but supplemented his scoring gap with Maxey. I think Simmons, Maxey and Embiid could have worked. Damage was done first by Daryl trying to trade him 2-4 weeks into his job. Harden went to the nets but created doubt with Ben. It was downhill after that.

@@noahcrouse9789 🤡
That's his problem, you listen to the dude on a podcast, and he sounds like a genius both at strategy, analysis, and handling people. But then he coaches a team, and makes mind blowing bad decisions, no adjustments, and then when his team fails, it's clear the stars ain't standing up saying "that's our guy".
It's easy to say and do the right thing when the pressure is not on.
His teams throw out clunkers in big playoff games consistently. As soon as I saw the Sixers were going to game 7 with Doc I knew it was over.
How often does Doc take any responsibility for anything?
Always blaming circumstances, litterally every team every year has tough circumstances to some degree except maybe the 2017 Warriors who only faced adversity for like the first month or 2 of the season getting adjusted playing together. Sometimes Docs team has a legitimate excuse to not win , but often they lose and are relatively healthy compared to everyone else and have the talent to beat whoever they lost to.
Who did he blame? Doc is simply describe his experience from his perspective. He says "we" because that's how leaders talk. He is a top 5 winning coach in NBA history. And here you are blowing a load because he's not beating himself up over Harden and Embiid disappearing in game 7.
@Vincent Salamatino FACTS..... both those guys have MVPs and they somehow need a coach to get them going in a game 7. You watch the Joker close out the Heat, and there wasn't shit Malone did. He ranchis starters out there... Joker just put everyone on his back down the stretch to close the game.

Rivers low key throwing Harden under the bus. This dude's ego is something else
But he didn’t tell a lie …. James Harden’s style of basketball does not equal post season success.
Remarkable how many commenters on here are looking right past the person who is right near (if not at) the top in being responsible for the failures: Doc Rivers. His finger-pointing in all directions without ONCE taking any responsibility himself is very telling. He's coached three teams with near, future, and current hall of famers all over the place and has one title to show for it; three top 50 all time players were on that team and Rondo might sneak in the hall of fame too. I think the average NBA coach does better with what he's been handed than Doc did.
This is one of the best sports podcast episodes I think I’ve seen. Everyone should watch the full episode
Doc talks in circles, takes credit for anything he can and blames his players for not stepping up in losses. What a coach!
This is like the basketball equivalent to 2 rappers who had beef joining on a podcast together years after the fact.
Joel has been coddled and places blame on everyone else when the sixers lose. He only cared for the mvp. He proved that last year and this year.
