Thanks for this. The problem I'm having is after I expand it I cannot fill the white space with any colour. It keeps colouring the outer stroke. I understand the concept of Expand. Is there a way to fill in the white space with another colour? Thank you.
Regarding the last bit about finalising the shape by outlining the stroke - there is no need for that, CTRL-K (or CMD-K on mac) gives you the preferences panel, where you can select "Scale stroke", which will preserve the appearance when you scale the object :)

4:45 doesnt work for me... if i press expand nothing happens
The 'teeth' had to be overlapping the outer circle of the cog slightly more than I had, otherwise I was getting lines left over in the final shape
how do you make the artboard full like that ??
