I did this unconsciously in high school then I went to college and saw everyone reading and highlighting so I decided to do the same and my performance was the worst. It’s now that I realise what went wrong.

Wow this is revolutionary for me! I dunno how I went through post grad medschool and training not knowing sound study techniques back in the early 2010s.
Surprisingly, I believe categorizing has always been my style. I want to see the whole picture first and start from there. If I can connect everything in 1 whole sheet that would be best.
Recently knowing other techniques such as active recall/self testing, spaced repetition, etc kindof made the whole studying picture more doable and almost complete.
Will surely try the others out and excited for it!

1 active recall (testing yourself enough
2 spacing out study sessions just to forget what u have learnt only to remember it in a better ways
3 categorising everything before hand. Build a tree of knowledge abt whatever u study.
4 interleaving - learning should be mentally taxing . As soon you start finding something easy, you are not studying well enough.

How am I going to test myself every time I revise without reading the texts?

    • @KoiAcademy
      @KoiAcademy 4 роки тому +2

I think I can answer this question. Sorry if it is coming 3 months late. But in order for you to revise/review you have to read the text first and understand the concepts. Once you understand the concepts, I would recommend (and I'm sure Dr. Ali would as well) making flashcards with questions of what you read from the text. And on the other side of the flashcard put answers. This way, when you are revising/reviewing, you don't have to reread the text, because you already made the flashcards with questions! Hope that helps a some!
if you're interested in more study strategies, we made a video too! and we plan to make more, take care

testing-active recall, flashcards, testing yourself before, during, and after studying
spacing-"deliberate non-practicing", space out study sessions to forget some information
categorizing-if you want learn the information, create a category-based system such as a "tree of knowledge" or "mind map" with branches that hold specific information about that general subject
interleaving-if you're finding learning hard, then you're learning correctly. the brain is like a muscle; work it out.

Girl, I'm 3yrs out of Med school and I still had a freak-out session with my friend 3 days ago that I'm going to suck as a doctor because I've forgotten everything 😄
You'll be fine... I wish I knew all these when I was in med school.

    1:39 Testing: basically active recall
    3:50 Spacing: spaced repetition
6:49 Categorising: buliding a tree of knowledge to categorise every new information under an abstrakt or a type
10:07 Interleaving: don't do 20 maths problems in 4 hours straight, rather do 5 in an hour for 4 days

I think that is NOT what he meant with #4 - Interleaving. #4 is more about 'mixing' your set of problems to make them mentally challenging. Such that you will learn to stick the solution with problem type. But further utilizing this technique with #2 spaced repetition, then you are kind of right. Here we 'mix' the information (#4) but also 'space it out' over lets say 4 days (#2). Doing so, you have both the techniques in motion.

Your topic today is so important for studying. I discovered your channel a few days ago. My exams will begin in two weeks. But I didn’t learn enough because of my not-knowing-how-to-learn. Do you have any idea how to realize the STIC-technique for the last days till exams?
Thanks a lot for answering ;-)

    Hi Ali.
First I want to congratulate you on maintining such a high quality channel, you are really making a difference.
When I watch your videos it all makes perfect sense and seems like the perfect way to aquire new knowledge. As a software engineering student at Aalborg University we do a lot of group work, which keeps us at the university for at least 8 hours a day and that means we have to use the "cramming" technique when one have to study for a topic in order to not let our fellow students down when doing group exercises.
I would like to hear your two cents on how to apply the spaced study sessions in this environment since I find it difficult to plan and study for 5 lectures every week whilst applying spaced repetition.
    Best regards.
