I started a painting company in the Bay Area with a 6 ft. stepladder. I worked alone. No partner, no employee(s)=no headaches. My income was based solely on my performance. I remember once I was feeling bad about working alone and letting anyone else work. I talked to an old retired painter, and he told me “having other people helping you is not necessary, a journeyman can do an entire house alone, you won’t have unknown thefts on your jobs, drinking and drugs, no one asking for advances to do drugs and all types of confusion. Work alone”. I didn’t feel bad no more. That was my hustle, my livelihood. Get your own.
I’m a firm believer that you have to fail in order to succeed. Congratulations on hitting 402k but we all know that you will grow even larger soon. I commented on a video on January 18 that I couldn’t believe that you only had 182k subscribers. After watching this video I want to say you are a great person and a great role model to your son. Thank you for letting us in and treating us as family.
As a business founder and owner, I have to say that I don't understand that idea at all. Yes, you need to be able to pick yourself up IF you fail, but you don't need to fail to have success. I did not fail and the business I started with two others in 2003, now employs over 3000 people world wide, and is a publicly traded company since 2021. Many who fail can't get up, and the sad part is that sometimes they fail for reasons out of their own control. So it is absolutely not a must to fail and you need to avoid it, because it won't always make you better or able to succeed, far from it in fact.
I enjoyed your story, Steve. For some reason, I had imagined that you had probably gotten an engineering degree and built your business without too much financial worry. Man was I wrong. You are definitely the epitome of determination. I’ve always admired your Christian witness. God had plans to prosper you, and it’s really cool to see how things have worked out for you and your family. Proud for you, Steve. Keep up the good work. Thanks for the inspiration. God bless you brother.
I know Mrs. Morris is Camera shy but I’d like to hear her take on supporting Steve like that. To have him just say F-it to business and say you keep it all and then start from scratch all over again. That’s one hell of a support network!!
As a C4,5 and 6 breaker, I identify highly with you all. I also was young and in good shape like Kyle, and healed without surgery. But you are a VERY lucky man to still be walking. Your story is one of extreme perseverance and fortitude and I commend you and your family, and wish you all the best. P.S. I was at Great Lakes and witnessed the epic thrash you went thru, and asked how you still smiled all the time. Now I know... 👍👍👍
Steve has built one hell of a engine program and should be very proud, but you can see he’s done even better at raising Kyle. These guys are genuinely good guys and it’s painfully obvious. Big Fan from Indiana
WoW, thanks for sharing your story,so many people assume that anyone successful had to have it handed to them. I really appreciate how much credit you give your wife. A marriage is the one partnership you stayed in for 25 years. I think it is great that Kyle is following your footsteps and keeping the Morris name alive for years to come in the racing industry
This brought back so many memories of my early years, Steve. George Delorean. wowser. What a unique and cool guy. I am going to admit, I used to do a LOT of Street racing. I remember all the famous cars. The silver Bullet, the silver Mustang 2 Roush built with the 505 wedge, for Ruggirello, among others. We used to trailer our stuff up to 12 mile, and met at the old Clock restaurant, at 12 and Orchard Lake Road, and then race on the not yet complete part of I-696. We called it the Top End Club. I couldn't afford a decent trailer, just a tow bar back then, and George had a shop called Leader Automotive. He built my exhaust for my 502 big block Chevy in my 67 Camaro, which consisted of a right off the header collector 3 and 4 inch pipe, 4 Corvair Turbo mufflers ( 2 per side) , and dumping out just in front of the rear axle. The system was expensive, and was fabricated to fit each car and engine setup, and was expensive ( about 600.00 in 1977 dollars!) All the guys had this exhaust. Was not much power loss, because the engine tune didn't have to change. Last year, George passed. I ended up in the Clinical Engineering field, after my wife passed away, and I ended up a single parent. I truly enjoy all of your videos, but this one was the most honest and special yet.
Partnership issues: There are partner pirates that let you spill your dream, then they take over and run you off. Many times they will stick you with a debt too much to pay off in 45 years. In other words they either want to steal your ideas or they want you to be a slave to them. Engineers: There are born engineers that only need a little mentoring and there are educated engineers that want the title. Problem is finding the born engineers in a world of mega-ego and toxic ego. It took me a few tries to find ways to identify the born engineers. In this case, college education isn't needed, as a college educated person has to get past the toxic ego before they are productive, but the high school grad can be productive much faster. Running a business is tough, but making it big has more to it than just luck. God has a blessing for those that keep looking to Him for answers.
Amazing! I had no idea about the motorcycle crash and all the trials and tribulations you went through! You definitely deserve all you have today. Such a good example of staying positive, Steve Morris is the guy you want to use as an example for your children, and the kind of guy everyone wants to hang out with. We are fortunate to have this channel. Edit: 400k!! Woohoo!!!
Amen. Keep the faith. Don’t see many Christian people in your type rolls. God has definitely blessed you in your business. Always enjoy watching your videos. Can tell when someone is a Christian!
I love your story! I grew up in Central Michigan Vestaburg. Same chilhood you describe. I grew up at the short tracks in Michigan Crystal, I96 speedway etc. Ended up going to UTI in Chicago to be an auto mechanic ASE certified in 1990. Things in Kuwait started and I couldnt get a job. I ended up serving in the US Navy for 8 years as a diesel mechanic. I just ordered my Steve Morris hoodie and I will wear it with pride.
Thanks Steve, Your A Bad Bad Man when it comes to HP. You created a legacy for your son/family & a way for your generations to come to excell and support themselves for another 100 Years. That's sweet, That's what a real man does for his family. 👍🏻
Steve very cool indeed. It was great that you would shared all of the true trials and tribulations of business. And even the humility of saying how important your wife was to your success. Then by expressing the reality and the sacrifices that we as independent owners suffer through to hopefully one day be a success story. What also is amazing to me is how you and your son both nearly died from the same type of accident and both are here to tell us about it. What a testimonial. Great statement, Treat others the way you expect to be treated and if you do you may survive anything in life!
DOG GONE! I CANNOT BELIEVE IT Steve! I watched that show where they interviewed you! I had forgotten all about it! I remember thinking you were so cool... but kinda "stuck up"! Butt, you were so good... you could afford to be, cause you were that good!!! Thanx for jogging my memory... & being you! J

Steve Morris. I am a 59 y/o Toolmaker and CNC programmer. This is the advice that I give to all apprentices (I've had a few). Every day I learn something new even after I've been doing this for over 35 years. Sometimes you learn what to do from someone with a different perspective. (even first year apprentices) Sometimes you learn what NOT to do, for the same reason. NEVER think you know it all. Keep open mind and be humble. I've seen this from you.
Steve, we are alot alike. Went into a partnership with a guy in 2008, worst mistake of my life. I walked away from everything in early 2010 flat broke. Rented one bay out of shop and started a new auto repair business. Found a niche market in Diesel repair and run a successful business since then. Took me surrounding myself with the right people. Love hearing these type stories. I think the struggle makes you a better person with a better business mindset because you know what not to do. Good job.

This man just loves doing what he loves and nobody can stop him !
I have been following you ever since you were doing high boost pump gas stuff back in the day.
Cleet got you to the 400k!!! Way to go for both of you! You deserve it.
I know Mrs. Morris is Camera shy but I’d like to hear her take on supporting Steve like that.
To have him just say F-it to business and say you keep it all and then start from scratch all over again. That’s one hell of a support network!!
Reminds me of my dad and I. I'm so thankful and you remind me to be. Thank you for staying humble.
Congratulations on the 400k Thanks for the hard work and dedication!!!
Steve has built one hell of a engine program and should be very proud, but you can see he’s done even better at raising Kyle. These guys are genuinely good guys and it’s painfully obvious. Big Fan from Indiana
Congrats, Mr. Morris on building your brand through adversity and gaining your 400,000th + subscribers!!!!!
Brilliant 👏
I always appreciate your honesty Steve. It is most often lost on social media and you continue to always be yourself. Great interview guys.
A good woman behind every successful man
Partnership issues: There are partner pirates that let you spill your dream, then they take over and run you off.
Such a legendary man, and so humble throughout his journey. I have utmost respect for Steve Morris and his son Kyle. Awesome people
I remember watching that inside drag racing with my dad. So cool
Thanks Steve for the content. My evening is fulfilled. Enjoy all the content.
“My mom was perturbed when she found out I was no longer in band… Until I put an SMX into her station wagon
Thanks Steve, Your A Bad Bad Man when it comes to HP. You created a legacy for your son/family & a way for your generations to come to excell and support themselves for another 100 Years. That's sweet, That's what a real man does for his family. 👍🏻
I could listen to you tell stories forever man! That’s so awesome!
Steves ability too touch soo many come from his humble beginnings. People with handouts cannot communicate like this.
Been in a motorcycle accident myself but was way worse than Steve and Kyle’s accidents. And you guys gave some great words of wisdom and advice to everyone. Thanks
I hope you come to America one day when 45 is rightfully re installed and freedom returns to we the people from every country on earth. If I make it there , I’ll be coming to meet you. I am an Aussie patriot that loves freedom and good old fashioned values.
See you in the future.
That’s awesome, I draw a lot of parallels between your and kyles relationship and my own with my father, as a 22 year old myself and my dad being the one who started the family business. I think often times I want progress to happen instantly but your story is just another reminder that progress takes time mixed with persistence. Thanks for sharing Steve
Two miracle's walking around building engine's. Very blessed to be alive. Love the show. And yaw seem to be able to get along good for a father son team.
Congrats on 400k subs Steve and crew :)
God bless you and your family.
So happy you made this video, I’ve definitely been one of those people so interested in the origin story!!!! Thank you steve
I am still picking my jaw off the floor at the explanation of the mx crash..... You're here for a reason 🙏
Thanks for sharing this information and congrats on 400k subscribers let’s get this channel to 1 million subscribers as its one of the best channels on UA-cam.
Thanks for sharing! What a great story and something to be proud of!!! 👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
That was legit. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. It explains a lot i’ve been a fan of you and Tom since Drag week and you and the wagon and your channel since sick week love y’all
Couldn`t agree more on the partnership statement, & also "behind every great man there has to be a great woman" theory. The wise men of this planet admit that there wife/partner was there rock, the unwise ones dont. Great back story Steve, thank you for posting it. Regards from the UK.
Man, I’m getting chills, remembering this inside drag racing stuff and what have you.. I’m so glad you included these clips!!!! Friggin cool as heck!!!!
I got a c1/c2 fuse, and compressed t7/t6…these injuries don’t go away, but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one walking around with those injuries, Superman broke his same bones when I was in recovery, and we know how he ended up sadly
What a cool video! From learning how you got started and the truck ya'll did for your uncle. The video on Inside Drag Racing (which brings back SOOOO many memories btw) to how you and Bailey got together, to today... And being interviewed by your son... Pretty dam cool!
Thanks again!
A good wife makes life a beautiful story. Bravo sir you are a good man.
Congrats on hitting 400k subs and for being honest about life. So often today we don’t get to hear about people’s life stories the good, bad, ugly and successes. It’s refreshing to watch someone to be honest and open about their life. Hopefully your story inspires more people to keep on chasing their dreams. Keep up the good work and we all are looking forward to more great content.
I grew up in Lowell, small world. Knew Showboat Automative very well. Great guys. Now I live in the Florida Keys.
Gosh dang, I've been following you for a few years. I remember when you had less than 50k subs. The growth that Cleetus has brought is so great! Also, glad to see you guys rep'ing Centroid. I'm a dealer for them, not the 5 axis machines, but everything else. God bless you guys!
Great story best wishes
This is really cool. I’ve always wanted a video like this from you ❤Congratulations on 400k Subs🎉
Good job.
I would KILL to sit down for hours and listen to all of your cool stories Steve!
I could listen to these stories for hours.
"Sugar Momma will definitely help!" Cracked me up. Loved this entire story. Thanks for this and...for giving "Mamma" credit. And the final reference to the Golden Rule tops it all off.
I grew in a rich in love but poor in money family that im so thankful for now 🙏. Thanks for sharing your story with us . Hope you and yours have a blessed day
Congrats Steve it's great hearing stories like these I've done some HVAC work for a well known builder in Phoenix AZ and seem almost impossible to do what you guys have done but you guys and your families have pushed through bad economy's, good economy's, family struggles but your still here by the grace of God and your willingness to keep getting up when your knocked down. 👍
32 years and you hit 400k finally! Cleets motor is paid off!!!! KEEP DOING GREAT THINGS STEVE
And never missed a day of work. Congrats on sticking with it.
Thanks for sharing your story.
SME and McFarland have gone over and beyond for us, so let's get Steve to 500k!
Got your 400k congrats. 💯🔧🚗🏁®
Congrats on 400,000!!!
The timing on this post is impeccable with the doubling of the subscriber base in the past 3 days lmao
I might fall from a tall building,
I might roll a brand new car.
'Cause I'm the unknown stuntman that made Redford such a star.
Love the fall guy!!!!!
Hard work and a strong women for support can make anything happen. The American Dream . you deserve everything that is coming to you.
Damn, guys! I'm sure you know how lucky you are, but I broke C5, C6, and T7 in a car accident 14 years ago and never walked again. You two must have an angel watching over you!
Thank you, I guess I can’t deny that. All the best to you!
We want to be able to buy the old SME fish logo stickers. Bring those back for us. One huge thing that draws a lot of us I'm sure is how you handle yourself at every event. Just seem like a 100% genuine guy. Only know 1 person that had an engine from you but it was amazing.
