Hello~ I've noticed that people are questioning as to why we're calling MNL48 as the first IDOL girl group of the Philippines, and I would like to address that. Yes, I am fully aware that they are not the first GIRL GROUP. However they are indeed the first IDOL girl group, and as I said in a previous comment, there is a big difference especially since when you mention the term girl group/boy group here in the Philippines, certain definitions come to mind. Either (A) certain provocative sing & dance/dance only groups come to mind (Examples would be the Sexbomb Girls, Mocha Girls, or simply the EB Babes/Wowowin Girls on TV shows); (B) The western definition of a girl group/boy group would come to mind where you need powerful vocals (Ex. Little Mix, Fifth Harmony, Backstreet Boys) and sometimes less to no choreography (One Direction) , sometimes some members may be the "face of the group" and the rest as just supporting members (Pussycat Dolls); Lastly, (C) the Philippine's entertainment industry's attempt to define their own boy group/girl group concept which peripherally is closer to the K-pop idol concept but is substantially a Filipino group of pop stars (which is far from the idol concept) comes to mind (Ex. XLR8, Down to Mars, Pop Girls, UGG, etc.). We did our research, and MNL48 is the first and only idol girl group WHO CLAIMED IT (meaning sinasabi talaga nila na idol group sila). Claiming is important here because if you don't say that you're an idol group, then that means you belong to a different girl group/boy group system. There are many things that MNL48 does that are extremely similar to the Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Taiwanese idol group concepts. Aside from (A) being a sing and dance group, (B) their music appeals to the teens. They have (C) an actual organized fanbase that is supported by the management (Hence official lightsticks and official photocards), (D) have fan-meets, fan-signs, and handshake events for their fanbase organized by the management, (E) They live in an actual dorm together, (F) they have an actual "debut." (TV, Radio, Spotify & iTunes/Apple Music). I hope everyone notices the differences, because I personally have followed the girl groups/boy groups of the Philippines in the past and MNL48's the only one who claimed that they were an idol group, and are substantially similar to what a the definition of an idol group truly is. P.S. I'm not a fan [yet hahaha] but I do listen to a lot of music genres and enjoy research from time to time. 😊

@@ami7mina fyi, mnl48 is a concept that originates in Japan like all the other 48 groups there and you should see the concepts of all the 48 groups around Asia. Just because we are in the Philippines, we should be represented by a Morena, we are racially and culturally mixed with other races, tbh. Their concept is giving interactions with the fans and in terms of diversity, what do you mean? If your thinking of race, come on girl. They are all diverse. If their concept doesn't suit your taste, well don't bash, just ignore them. Of course, they're commercialized because they are on the market. Girl, don't just hate MNL48 because you don't like them.

Hello ELites~ Welcome to React Season 2! Wanna know why we chose these 3 music videos? First of all, we did a little research to know what OPM really stands for today, and based on our findings, OPM is much different from what it was back in the day. OPM today is diverse, has no limits in language (Hence various Filipino artists covering English songs and making it “their own” is also considered OPM today), and has various influences. Because of this, we wanted to share 3 music videos which did just that.
First, IV of Spades is undoubtedly the hottest band today in the Philippines, In My Prison is an original song by the band, but its lyrics are in the English language which proves how OPM is not limited by language.
Second, Shanti Dope represents today’s Filipino HipHop scene. Just as how K-pop evolved from pop songs alone to a branch of music comprised of various genres, OPM is doing the same today with HipHop, Funk, Pop, and more! Plus, HipHop is also on the rise in Korea amongst the younger generation so it was interesting to see how Koreans would respond to Filipino HipHop.
Lastly, MNL48’s Aitakatta Gustong Makita is originally a J-pop song by AKB48, MNL48’s official sister group. MNL48’s Filipino rendition of the song was made as their debut single. The concept of an “idol group” is not something foreign to Koreans, and because of this, we found it interesting for them to react to the Philippines’ first. (P.S. an idol group is not the same as your usual girl-group/boy-group)
Hope this rationale helped you guys understand why we chose the songs and their relevance to the series. Cheers to OPM and its bright future!

Likewise! I didn't know how the Koreans would react at first since I knew that they're already exposed to the idol culture, as well as AKB48 slightly through Produce48. We Filipinos are usually openminded, however this is only true to things we are familiar with. Hence some people thought that MNL48 was trying to be a K-pop group. I think what MNL48 (actually their management/the show they were in) should've done was to define what AKB48 is, what idol culture is, and integrate it to Filipino music culture in a way that the audiences would've easily understood and appreciated it. Wishing MNL48 the best! MNL48 aside, I wish the Philippines would have shows like Music Bank, Inkigayo, M-Countdown etc. It'd be great to have a music chart show that showcases various Filipino artists. Not only does it entertain people, but it also gives artists a reason to do and be their best every week! -EL

I admit, I was one of those people who questioned them at first because of how poorly showtime has marketed MNL48 (they should’ve made a separate show instead of having the competition in showtime). However after I saw the debut song and live performances, I was impressed! Very promising group indeed!

Olin Obus you've got a point but there's this toxic culture of ours that if we don't get or achieve what other filipinos do we tend to pull them down. These artists are no exception. Look how they hate on something they don't like. It gets to a point where they bash someone until that particular person or group's reputation is ruined. Just saying if you don't really like it just keep it to yourselves. Supporting our artists really help our industry grow.

Being a solo artist and a band (especially divas)in the Philippines just suits the taste of the public. Also, when we started debuting idol groups, many people would just compare them to the existing groups in other country (eg. korean/japanese/american/british groups) and sa "mga trying hard", which is really sad.

MNL48 isn't the first girl group, but first idol girl group po! There's a big difference especially since the phrase "girl group" has certain connotations here. Sadly pag sinabing "girl group" certain provocative sing & dance or dance only groups come to mind by the general public here in the Philippines. This is where the importance of the definition of an idol group comes into play and is very much needed. In Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and other Asian countries with Idol groups; Idol groups are supposed to be role models and have dances and music that appeal to the teens. 😊

@iamiasd maybe youre basing your description of idol group on kgroup concept. but you see, mnl48 is base japanese concept of idol group which is very different on kpop group. MNL48 is a rotation group, when someone leaves, someone will replace them. they are just starting, so we havent seen their full potential yet. if it is exactly same as akb48, they will have their own show, and will be promoted to other countries. some of them will have collaboration with other AKB groups. so i hope fans will continue to support them for us to see the second gen. this generation are good, vocals wise and dancing wise.

It just goes to show the power of music~ Music transcends languages and barriers. Thats how we K-pop fans got drawn into K-pop even if we never really understood it at first. Eventually, you'd want to search the meaning of the song on your own, and appreciate it even more than you did the first time you heard it. I think that's what truly makes loving music you can't understand at first different from loving music that you already understand. This is one of the reasons why we never show subtitles even with our previous react series. 💜

OPM artists has strongly influenced the new genre, like rapping, hip-hop, etc. I'm now addicted to watching most of the newer bands which are recently featured on UA-cam. IV of Spades, Shanti Dope, Gluoc9, Budakhel are some of my favorites. The Philippines has lots of very talented artists who are versatile which can level up with the Asian and international scene. I cant deny that I 'was' a hater of MNL48. Bcoz I think They're just copying KPOP concepts, maybe I think that way bcoz Filipinos are not into so called 'IDOLS'. But last April I got interested to 48/46 groups. And then one day I watch their first performance as MNL48 in Showtime 'Talulot ng Sakura'. And then now I'm a proud fan🙌 I realized that MNL48 doesn't deserve any hate from us(Filipinos). They're working hard to represent PH in Jpop so let's appreciate them and continue support them! SPREAD LOVE MNLoves😍💓

  • @VyMauricio
    @VyMauricio 5 років тому +17

Somi sounds so American haha and Selim seems to know more about Filipino culture.
Thank you so much for including MNL48! Overseas sister groups of AKB48 usually only make/release versions of AKB48 songs in their countries' languages that's why they sound more Japanese and are modeled after Japanese idols. That's also why they don't sound as "Filipino" as one would think. It's really nice that you guys get to appreciate them. There are also a few indie idol groups around such as Aidoru Sozai, CH4U, and more. But they're also mostly J-pop influenced.
I like IV of Spades too and I was just as amused when I watched "In My Prison" because it shows that Filipinos can make quality music videos.
Filipino Hip-hop has been here a while but isn't as mainstream as pop music. Gloc9 is a veteran in the scene. Fliptop (which Selim also mentioned) has helped greatly in garnering interest in Filipino hip-hop. Some Fliptop artists even have their own songs, so I hope you check them out.
I'd like to suggest that you guys check out "Cheats" too! They're my favorite local indie band, most of their songs are in English though.

Woah. I didn't expect them to react to MNL48. Lol. As someone who supports MNL48 while being a fan of Keyakizaka46, I really hope Filipinos learn to appreciate J-Pop too. Keyakizaka46 is my pride and actually I've been a fan of the early days of 48 Family so I really understand MNL48's circumstances. Yes, the early generations of AKB48 were chaotic as well. There was a time during their starting point where they only had a handful of fans during performances. Their dancing and singing was so-so but the girls progressed and made their influence this far. We can't deny that the start is always hard for them but once they warm up, they can start conquering the spotlight. The potential of MNL48 girls is really overwhelming. J-Pop idol culture was never really about dancing and singing since it's mainly about entertaining the fans so their level of dancing is acceptable but the groups with great dancing skills are still flocked by a lot of fans. That's also the main reason why I got into Keyakizaka46 since aside from their unusual approach (they're literally so cool, militaristic, and rebellious, rarely cute in their songs) as an "idol" group, their dancing is always so intense. They were composed of members who are willing to take on challenges because they want their group to be better and I can relate MNL48 to them. The girls would strive to get better because of the haters. The pressure on them is really great but this will only push them towards a clear goal. Since the J-Pop culture is still not as known as the K-Pop culture here, it is expected by a lot of people that idols should be a group that could sing and dance. And of course, the girls would probably try to meet those expectations, which will only make them better. I believe in those kids.

I super enjoyed the 1st and this one. So great! Well polished and very informative. Seeing them happy and giving their inputs means they enjoyed the interview. And its really nice to know that they live here in the Philippines 🇵🇭. Hope to see them in person and greet them in Tagalog and Korean. More power! And more interesting videos to come.

    Would like recommend
Don't know what to say by Ric Segreto,
Kaleidoscope World by Francis Magalona, and With a Smile by Eraserheads. True OPM Classics.

Crab mentality really sucks to us Pinoys... Trying to drag down other's, don't appreciate...

Make them react to juan karlos buwan music video. The song is good, the cinematography is good, and also the meaning of the video is so deep.
