- What to do at INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL AND STATE PARK- 3 Dune Challenge! Indiana's National Park is a beach oasis on Lake Michigan just waiting for you to explore. It's the perfect weekend getaway from Chicago or across the country.
We wanted to show some of the special things you can do while visiting Indiana Dunes and started with the 3 Dune Challenge. The Three Dune Challenge may have one of the best marketing campaigns of any trail! The loop takes you to the top of the 3 highest dunes in the area. You can even buy a t-shirt after you compete it!
We finished the three dune challenge, skipped the t-shirt and went to the beach at the National Park. After some relaxation at West Beach we went to dinner at Big Time Burgers, Albanese Candy Factory then to Popcorn Festival in Valparaiso to round out our day!
Indiana Dunes does encompass the State and National Park. The state park has the 3 dune challenge, camping, and summer swimming. The National Park has swimming all year ( if you dare swim in the winter) hiking, and many preserved areas.

My legs are burning with you. Trying to do that in sand is crazy. I would have drunk all the water and the snacks on the first hill. 😶

Wow I had no idea the trail was all over the place out there. There is zero trail it looks like dang. And sanddddd haha. Nice job y’all gettin it done!!
I was happy we couldn’t see the trail all at once. That made it better!
Stopped by there back in June on our way back from the west coast. There was a tornado warning and flooded roads. So, did not get to see or do anything....
Indiana weather in the summer is tricky and better to be safe then sorry! Next time though!!

I did know they gave out stickers! Hopefully now no one else will skip that!!
How long did it take to climb the dunes in total?
I don’t remember exactly but I think it was under 2 hours. It’s hard work but short climbs and goes pretty fast!
