My Mum told me that when I was around 18 months old (late 63 - 64) Johnny O’Keefes TV show came on and I just stood transfixed and watched. I still love rock n roll music!
Saw him at St. George Leagues Club, Kogarah, Sydney - 2-week show. Also Penshurst Odeon - live show. And when I was very young Rushcutters Bay ( back up to USA Artists then0, who were looked on as saviors for Australia WW2.
I have followed JOK'S music for over 60 years have Cassettes, Records CDS DVDS and books of his life. Had She Wears My Ring played at our Wedding when signing the register. Thanks JOK ♥️
One of JOK's best-ever songs. Great lyrics (listen closely) !! Great to see this original footage of him performing in the TV studio. Sallie6 : you deserve a medal !! Thanks. JOK was the real pioneer of Oz rock 'n' roll music, our first-ever genuine 'rock-star' .. and boy could he get a crowd going when he performed live (often with the Delltones backing-up). JOK opened a lot of doors for many later Oz artists to come. He killed 'em at Sunbury in 1972, when no-one thought he could.
One of the beauties of 'You-Tube', you can time travel all over the world and hear all the great groups from all over the world during the greatest Rock & Roll period, the 50's & 60's!
I remember seeing JOK when he was at his lowest at the Newcastle Show singing in a tent. It cost me $2 entry and I still consider it the best $2 I have ever spent.
Great stuff, never heard of him but we never even hear the good old music from this period in the states, not even on the oldies stations, let alone music from this period from other countries, Indo-rock etc. It's a shame, this is top notch rock and roll! It is cool though, now with youtube it's suddenly available to everyone and being discovered anew by all generations, garnering a whole new appreciation for what might have been forgotten entirely. Thanks for posting this!
I had an old newspaper clipping that we found when pulling up old lino in the kitchen. There was an ad in it for a show at the Newcastle Civic Theatre (I think off hand about 1954) The main act was Judy Robertson, who was the first person to sing RnR in Australia and JO'K was her supporting act. not much has been written about Judy, a little women with a big voice. It's a pity that pioneers like here haven't received the acculades that they deserve.
Don't hear much of his music on the radio...in fact, bugger all.... well, that's going to change over here on Blue fm 100.3. New Zealand....along with Cole Joy and Billy Thorpe....
What a talent taken too soon after all these years to see this footage of John a consummate showman and performer i dont know what you call it but he had it in spades. From Peter at Auburn age 66.
thanks to UA-cam the great JOK WILL LIVE FOREVER as will many other great Rock n Roll singers who have long gone but they left there music here for us to treasure as i for one never had the money to buy there singles as a 14 year old. i had the great pleasure to see JOK Preform at the Croxton Park Hotel in Preston and got on stage with him held his hand up high and declared him Australia's King of Rock n Roll.never will forget it.
kylieslpe, your 22 years old, you have almost NO music these days[i played in bands for years, and all the venues are now "pokie" joints! you have NO live music shows and there is not the real talent around that there once was. JOK was a great entertainer who worked extremly hard to "make it" I saw him live in '73 at festival hall, he backed up Bill Hailey they were great, but he was better! After that i got in to music, he was "Special"! Thanks for music, Mr JOK.
Johnny O'Keefe was compared to "Elvis" in Australia in the day... While no-one compares to "The King" (Elvis).. Johnny O'Keefe WAS Australia's equivalent... at the time. He had that same "appeal" that Elvis had.
JOK a great entertainer. Always wondered about the line "When your best friend steals your clothes from you" "Come tomorrow you will find a love that's true" Surely it should have been, "When your best friend steals your GIRL from you" Anyone know why?
Oh, well since you put it that way, I apologise. I misunderstood what you meant by what you said. JO'K became great friends with Buddy Holly and the Crickets when they toured here in 1958, and in fact, J.I Allison, Buddy's drummer, recorded a version of Johnny's song 'Wild One' with Buddy singing back up.
This song never fails to lift the spirit.
Johnny O'Keeffe was one of my dads best friends.
I remember him fondly.😊❤
A passing Aussie

Australia first rock star....loved by my dad..who was a bit of a rocker1928/2018..
This song reflects sadly his own emotional struggles. A great artist and one who died too early.
Thank you for the Music and Memories Johnny. "45 years" 🙏
Top showman. Did heaps for the industry. Good to have as my friend
Awweesome - at school they'd play this over the radio before we started our singing and lessons
I have followed JOK'S music for over 60 years have Cassettes, Records CDS DVDS and books of his life. Had She Wears My Ring played at our Wedding when signing the register. Thanks JOK ♥️
Best Australia ha love him. His daughter Vicky plays a great tribute with keep the candle burning. Fantastic memories.
Well I can't do nothin' with the blues I got, but sing, sing, sing on Johnny O'Keefe's birthday today (19 January 1935 ~ 1978) ♪♫
Show some respect please. This is our King of Rock'n'Roll. He is a legend here in Australia!!!

I can't believe it's been nearly 32 years since his passing. He is the KING of Aussie Rock.
What a talent and Australia treated him badly! Shame on this @#$% country!
Love this song for 60 years Michael 1:37
Such talent...such hard work for Australian talent..my friend
He was a great entertaina loved his shows
Happy birthday to you Johnny... 85 years young.
He could not sing but he was a great singer all the same and Australia is all the richer for his efforts .Long live JOK .
He can sing... And using commas would help with your contradiction... Yes Long live JOK.
Such an irritating statement at the beginning of your comment.
JOK one of Australia's best. Thanks for posting this
One of the beauties of 'You-Tube', you can time travel all over the world and hear all the great groups from all over the world during the greatest Rock & Roll period, the 50's & 60's!
all the lengends die to soon .long live rock and roll
Is that why we're both still alive?
he was our King of Rock and Roll. no need to say anymore. Rip Johnny
J.O.K. Still the KING!!!!!
I remember seeing JOK when he was at his lowest at the Newcastle Show singing in a tent. It cost me $2 entry and I still consider it the best $2 I have ever spent.
This is one of JOK's best. JOK's music still gets played a lot on Magic 1278 radio in Melbourne, Australia.
Johnny O'Keefe your a legend
When I feel like the world is on my head.. nothing like a bit of jok
Sorely missed from my generation, still remembered by me in my youth.

I was born after JO'K time, but my parents always played his music... I love it!
The girls were really pretty in those days it’s hard too think that’s how my mum dressed when she was a teenager now she’s 73
Don't hear much of his music on the radio...in fact, bugger all.... well, that's going to change over here on Blue fm 100.3. New Zealand....along with Cole Joy and Billy Thorpe....
Remembering (JOK) John Michael O'Keefe (19 January 1935 - 6 October 1978) We lost him 40 years ago today.
His my family for real
RIP, bonzer bloke. You gave so much to all of us....
Andrew O'Keefe : 2/10. Big Mouth. Full of himself. Mighty Limited talent.

Still one of my favourites together with Johnny Farnham

I agree completely, Johnny O’Keefe was amazing, I’m 14 and from the USA and I just found him and I love his music
I’ve always wondered how a young lad like me would know Johnny O’keefe was
I’m young to, I know exactly why some young people know Johnny o’keefe and who he was. It’s because he is such a great singer!
Wild One had lotsa fun

Surely it should have been,

True, but his real inspirations to pursue music was Bill Haley and Johnnie Ray.
