I was at this concert at Festival Hall - an all-Australian artists affair to raise money for the Cancer Council. O'Keefe performed a dynamic set and tore the place apart. Del Juliana was on the same bill. O'Keefe always gave 110 percent every time he went on stage whether it was performing for a huge auditorium or a tent show - and he did the lot. He was a truly visceral performer and audiences could always sense how genuine and committed he was to rock'n'roll, and responded accordingly.

Sallie, to say that J.O.K. was a "popular Aussie msinger 60's" is like saying that the Pacific ocean is a bit of a pond. John WAS the benchmark Australian entertainer of the 50's, 60's & 70"s until his death. His stage show was an absolute experience for those times and towards the end of his life he still headlined at Sunbury. John is THE Aussie pop/rock LEGEND. In this case you showed your skill in understatement.

He was the greatest entertainer of that era. I was fortunate enough to see him twice live on stage and on both occasions people were literally dancing on top of the tables. The energy in the room was electrifying.

Billy Thorpe might have been at this concert, I remember him saying in an interview, when someone asked him which overseas act he was influenced by and he said none, my idol was JOK when I saw him in concert, I said, that is what I want to do, what he is doing, holding that audience in the palm of his hands...two originals JOK and Thorpey

JOK never really got the recognition he deserved. When he was at his best - and it was truly world class - too many Australian audiences chose to believe that the only real rock and rollers were American.

I gas the pleasure of seeing JOK twice in West Australia when I was a young bloke - he was absolutely dynamite on stage. His support of upcoming Australian artists made many careers.

This was recorded at Brisbane Festival Hall in early1962. It was a concert of all Australian artists out of The Johnny O'Keefe Show and was to raise money for cancer research. He took the place apart that night and appeared on the Channel Nine telethon the following day. The show was broadcast as a special edition of the J.O'K. Show on tv a little later.

The Great J.O.K. who kick-started the Australian Rock Music Industry.
I was one of the kids who grew up with his music. Later, while working in Radio and Television, I got to know him and recall spending quite some time trying to talk him into letting me write his Biography. The typical JOK response was, "Nah Muz you only write a biography about someone who's dead." Sadly it was only a couple of years after that conversation that he died. So I didn't get to write his biography and he didn't need it anyway because we'll all remember him as the Trail Blazer of the Australian Music Industry.

Isley Brothers had the origional and JOK was like I one of their fans. He knew how to work an audience from his days at The Police Boys Clubs to The Sydney Stadium and Sunbury Muaic Festival. There was only one John Michael O'Keefe ONE OF A KIND> never to be replaced. I really miss him even though he got me into many tight corners.

I searched for this one after listening to For My Woman by Easybeats ; I like the Easybeats number but not so much this one . In my mind they're a similar genre. The views at the time was that this was kinda tribal and uncouth . That was typical of the opinions I heard from adults in the day. He might be trying for the jazzy relaxed style of Frank Sinatra here and he's not doing too badly at it.
