      I wonder what codec they were done with as that has a huge bearing on the size? I have terrabytes of music but as FLAC or DSD / SACD etc, with a single album being 1GB or more in size at times.

      @@EgoShredder My music library is about 79 GB and it's all high bitrate mp3. 8 GB is fairly small I'd say, but understandable for such a device. 79 GB is about 8500 songs. If you just listen to a few bands or just download whatever you like without collecting the entire discography then you should be fine with the roughly 800 songs 8 GB will allow you to have. That's a generous 10mb per song. That's good for an mp3 file.

    • @EgoShredder
      @EgoShredder 3 роки тому +2

      @@EremittV I have to disclose my dislike for audio compression for serious listening, but for casual stuff and podcasts then it is acceptable. However if you preference for music is in electronic genres and general popular music, then MP3 will suffice just fine. Anything that features mostly acoustic instruments and anything with a complex harmonic structure, will sound REALLY awful with compression even at the highest and best settings. Not sure how many albums I have in my collection, but it was around 2000 a few years ago last time I checked. I upgraded my NAS in 2014 and got 12TB storage to put inside it. I'm going to need to increase that fairly soon, or delete stuff whichever.

    • @EremittV
      @EremittV 3 роки тому +2

      @@EgoShredder I fully understand, but for most people high bitrate mp3's will suffice. Quality of sound also depends on the headphones, amps, etc. you're using and most people simply don't have the equipment to get the most out of FLAC. I have subscribed to Deezer for FLAC listening and my personal library is mainly for my iPod. If i want to listen to flac, I want to listen to it at my desk anyway. That's where my best equipment is. My library has files starting from 2006, so I chose consistency (all MP3) over lossless.

      I've got a very similar setup for my early morning crack of dawn writing sessions, and such a machine is PERFECT for productive writing. You're not going to do six ways of research at the same time, but for putting the maximum amount of words on screen quickly and efficiently...it's the way to go.
      No slipping over into a quick gaming session (that turns into a couple hours) when the writing momentum wanes. And good writing machines like this are always cheap!
      I run Mint on mine with the XFCE4 desktop...minimum CPU requirements, maximum efficiency.

    I picked up a ul20a just before Christmas for £48 and have had a lot of fun playing with it. The physical design is very similar to this machine but it has an SU7300 dualcore processor and runs both Windows 10 and Linux Mint nicely. The SU7300 has Intel 4500 MHD graphics which are capable of running Minecraft and a number of XBox-era PC titles like Splinter Cell at reasonable frame rates. One of the big advantages over the Atom machines is being able to run 8GB dual-channel RAM and I’ve also convinced it to boot from a 4TB SSD just to see what’s possible. The wi-fi is mini-PCIE so upgradeable to modern 802.11ac cards. All in all these Asus machines are nicely built and with SSD and modern wi-fi feel a lot more responsive than they did back in the day.

The only thing speaking for these devices was the fact that they were small, cheaper than normal laptops and OK-ish for basic tasks. I don't think the times of low-powered, tiny laptops are really over. You still can get them if you look for them... for instance, I saw another video for a $129 laptop which would be pretty much today's equivalent of the one you're reviewing here. I bought one 2 years ago for € 199 at the local Penny Markt... it has a quadcore Atom processor at 1.44 GHz, 32 GB of SSD, (I think) 4 GB of RAM and a 12" 1920x1048 display and runs Windows 10. It's fine if you just want to type up document or maintain databases on it, and it even runs UA-cam smootly... just don't expect it to do really well at streaming over UA-cam or at high performance games. It's actually so low powered that the power adapter is only 5V 2.4 A which means an average power bank can be a full substitute for it. And it only weighs a bit over 2 lbs, so it's very light to take along with you. And it's totally silent since it has no fans... it does have a speaker though, and even 2 built-in microphones to record in stereo!

    Linux Mint for sure runs faster than w7/8/10 on similar hardware but there are still some lower spec distros out there :) Puppy linux should working even better on that hw.

    It had a bad battery, but I replaced that and all is good now.

    This was my first student laptop :D At the time, it was a very decent performance for such a small device. But I had two RAM modules - 2x2GB.
    I played CoD Modern Warfare in lectures :P

    One question, is it 64bit win 7? I bought a new laptop for $200 on black Friday and it only came with 2 gigs of ram, max of 4, and 64bit win 7. It was slower than hell! I changed to 32bit Win 7 and it sped up considerably even without extra ram.

    I have three of these ION netbooks and they are awesome but the best one has been the HP Mini 311 as its the only one that has full XP driver support. Windows XP + an SSD results in a mini power house thst dominates any old game.

      I think it's because they promised so much freedom. With a lightweight Linux you can pretty much accomplish that. I do mobile writing on a similar device because it's definitely distraction-free. Can't play a single one of my favorite games on it! :D

      @@k.b.tidwell yeah true! The marketing was really solid haha! Absolutely. Lightweight distros are killer on older devices like that. I still want to get an 11 inch MacBook Air and get puppy Linux or MATE Mint running on it.

    Ahh I had one of those. Neatest thing around the time it came out. Parents had gotten me one for school. Yeah that Intel atom was pathetic, and speakers were like birthday card speakers but it was the battery life and portability that was so great. Jump to 2014 when I was ticked off at Windows 8 and got a MacBook Air. That thing had decent specs and battery life!

    I probably would stick with windows 7 and then install super low requirment internet browser like palemoon, basilisk or something similar. Given that this is Nvidia brand gpu using linux is limiting this machine. If you use proper drivers and ssd drive this could handle 1080p/30 frames which is enough for movies playback altough given that youtube removed support for 30 frames and is currently forcing 60 frames its probably cant play youtube well.
    Good job on restoring it!
