@@suesally2103 I live in Texas where we are overwhelmed with hundreds of thousands coming over our borders and taking over our state. Governor Abbott has been transferring them to sanctuary cities that think we should leave our borders open.... I wonder what the people on Martha's Vineyard would think if they had bus loads of illegal aliens dropped off on their streets?? You know since it is no big deal for border states such as Texas to take them in and support them with food stamps, housing, an education for the children, plus their medical needs. I think the sanctuary cities might change they minds and the way they vote if it was their problem as well as the border states.

My husband and I honeymooned here in the early '90's! I checked to see if the Bayberry bed and breakfast was still open, but it appears not. We always wanted to return. My father was from mainland Massachusetts and we vacationed there almost every year, but never Martha's Vineyard. When my husband said he wanted to go for our honeymoon, I thought it was a great idea. We went right before the tourist summer season. Everyone couldn't believe we'd traveled so far (we were married in the midwest), but really appreciated how much we enjoyed the Island. This video brought back lots of memories! How nice that the town governments are making the preservation of character so important It is to bad they haven't made affordable housing a priority for those who have grown up on the island. Nice to have shops and pretty buildings to enhance the character but it's the people who truly make up the character of a place. Sadly, so many in govt are concerned with businesses to attract tourist rather than the people who grew up there.

Normal people that rent have to move their whole families 2 times a year out of their "winter rental" so the landlord can rent the spot for bank in the summer and back again. All because the nimbyism of ppl who own palatial estates they don't even live in year round and others. they refuse to build apartment blocks even though they are desperately needed. Problem Would be soooo easy to solve. But instead they would rather have children having their lives uprooted twice a year to keep things "quaint" for all these so called compassionate liberals who want their lawns manacured and houses cleaned for cheap bur dont give af about the people doing it having a steady affordable roof over their heads.. It is not right at all.

I love the Cape. If you don’t live on Cape Cod then you don’t know what’s going on and shouldn’t make negative comments. FYI, the Cape has been building affordable homes and apartments for the locals. There are 4 new ones on Route 28 that passes near my home in the historic district. The council recognises that renters and vacation houses are pricing locals out so they have programs that are dedicated to building affordable homes for them, and not just in the touristy towns, but in residential areas when homes are in the millions. Everything built on the Cape must abide by the scenery of the Cape. It must “look” like it belongs on the Cape, no matter how large it is. There are no southwestern or southern plantation styles. All styles must follow certain visual standards and nautical colors stand out. Still, there’s such a variety that keep neighbourhoods looking unique. To that end, just recently, millions of dollars have been dedicated to building complexes of affordable housing apartments. These are not thrown up, badly built places. Care and attention to design. sustainability, and price is very much under consideration. Most complex have a variation of people with different incomes. Some are 30% of the median income, up to 60%. Some are full price. Lotteries are held for these apartments so people have a chance to get in. It is my understanding that many more are to be built over the coming years. These will be non-vacation rentable homes so they will not be used for summer tourist season, only for locals, and they are either beach front or near it. The towns own the beachfront so one can walk the beach for miles. Houses are built on back from beachfront, but they cannot keep people from walking on the beach in front. However, as I mentioned, there are so many miles of beach that there is no parade of people in front of private homes. There are low costs to park at beaches and the money goes to keeping the beaches clean and pristine, and lifeguards. Locals get a very low discount on major beaches, but then locals know where to go to find hidden gems. Cape Cod is the richest area in the US. With 650 miles of pristine beaches, plus lakes and rivers, tourist season can see millions on the mainland, but there is never a sense of overcrowding.Roads to the Cape are kept to a certain number of lanes, which causes backup. But it’s done deliberately as it keeps people from dangerously speeding. After tourist season, it’s quiet and the locals go out to enjoy even an quieter Cape. It has been more tourists than usual within the last two years because vacation home owners came to live in their homes instead of renting them because of COVID, but that seems to be winding down. Locals do not resent tourists. Touristy is the lifeblood of the Cape. People , especially students, come for the season and with the demand for help is so high as is the pay and tips, they can make enough to pay towards college cost.
There is no need to be critical of the vacationers in the Cape. They serve the purpose of making the Cape and islands some of the most beautiful scenery in America.

Thank you so much for this comment. I absolutely love living here, both during tourist season and the off season. I'm so glad we can appreciate the work that goes into making it such a beautiful community.

I’m coming in 2024 from England. Can’t wait. Inspired by the film Jaws, however, I can’t wait to explore some of the other breathtaking features on the island. Some of the scenery looks very similar to parts of England. Devon and Cornwall in particular.

They certainly did. Most of them are now US citizens and voters. All but a few are living and working in MA along with the states other 1.6 million migrants. Racists cracked up thinking we had never seen them before but it was immigrant fishermen families from Portugal and Africa who settled both Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket

If you actually cared about your fellow man you’d know that most of those “illegals” became actual legal residents and many of those will become citizens and will have voting rights just like you. Now, little boy, go back to your mommy’s basement.

The Del Rio area had more than 49,500 migrant encounters in July alone - more than the population of the city itself, which has a population of just over 34,500 people. By contrast, the year-round population of Martha’s Vineyard is 17,000 people and the island welcomed just 50 migrants when the “humanitarian crisis” was triggered.
