- My Zeiss Compromise
Now I know this headline seems a little like click-bait. But I assure you it’s not. Hear me out.
I have been in the professional or semi-professional gun-game since the early 1990’s. And I have seen a lot of things come and go. But one thing that always seemed like a constant was big-money spent on spotting scopes that ONLY get used on square ranges when…you know…”spotting” from your belly.
Typically these spotters are stored in either a Pelican type case, or Smurf-sized steamer trunk. Only to be cracked open like a scene in The Raider’s of The Lost Ark.
Don’t read ancient Hebrew? Let me translate: Most spotters are inversely proportional in cost vs time used. The more expensive the glass? The less time said glass sees daylight.
Just bugs the hell out of me.
So I split the baby. I bought a high end spotter made by Zeiss. But I decided to give up some magnification and light transfer by instead choosing an optic that was also field usable.
The Zeiss Dialyt 18-45x60 Field Spotter.
So now this spotter lives in the truck full-time, like some of you keep binoculars. But also works as a spotter for shooting, field glass for hunting, and hopefully soon a target camera to record hits on film.
Is it perfect? No. But in this case, it does everything well enough for my uses and ability. So instead of a gold brick in a padded box. We have field glass that is always in a range bag or behind the passenger seat of the truck.
This thing is getting used seriously 3-5 times a week right now.
Like I said, My Zeiss Compromise.
Sincerely,
Marky

Cool tube!
I am still very happy with it. Much more useful in my use case than a dedicated spotting scope. -Marky
After some wrangling, we finally got a spotter in. If you are wondering why we don't generally show video hits on steel? It's because the existing optics made it all look like it was filmed with a potato.
This SHOULD help that.

"I can see". Seeing is usually helpful. HAHAHA. I saw an adapter that puts a "box" on the scope which sends the view to a phone or other screen. I don't remember who made it. Just an idea for you. Good luck finding one that you like and works for you. Have fun.😎
@@GRT1865 We need something. I'll look into it. I think I know the device you are referring to. They indicted spotters were generally too big for that system.

I have never felt good about having a ton of money tied up in a spotter that gets used sparingly. Which is why…I probably never bought a spotting scope until now. -Marky
Great device!
It is. We use it weekly.

Look like your scoping out a bank job 😂
You might have seen my autobiographical movie, “Point Break”.
Endless summer, Man!!!!!

@@John1911 😂 loved those films, honoured to meet you sir!!!
@@John1911 I just bought one of these of eBay. Looked through it, saw a bird of prey.
Complete random luck!
Enjoying pretending to be a 🦜 pirate 😂
Glad you know the movie. The older I get, the more obscure my references seem.
I think this Zeiss product is a perfect cross over from a spotting scope (which sits unused most of the day) to a hand-held observation device.

60or65??
Hmmm...I’ll have to check it again. I might have that incorrect.
